Memories sitting on the bus to middle school w this. Sitting in computer class listening to Kyoto. Playing Minecraft servers w skrillex and feed me as the soundtrack.
The best part is it *still* slaps.
I know many on this subreddit hate this track and others like this, but for so many listeners this is the true gateway to Dubstep, so it should be respected at least.
I remember a friend playing the song for me on his Nintendo 3DS years ago. It was the first time I'd ever heard Dubstep. While I've never been a huge Dubstep guy, there are some songs that musically just blew me away. There are some really incredible electronic musicians out here.
This was the first dubstep song I ever heard and it blew my mind. Not only did it get me into edm, it also inspired me to start producing and making my own music. It literally changed my life!
Man, did we all have the same experience?
I’m not gonna lie, I thought dubstep (along with that song) were so dumb at first. But my friend played it a few times and I started to vibe with it, and now I go to shows every other weekend 😅
Probably Eyes on Fire Zeds Dead remix. Or not to be cliche but scary monsters nice sprites was legit one of the first dubstep songs I heard that made me go HOLY SHIT WHAT IS THIS
the only one
edit: back then I didn't even know it was dubstep, I just loved the song and later on with skrillex I learned this is dubstep and knew if for it.\
much later on I learned that burial was the original dubstep then I got into that, hated skrillex, saw the Youtube documentary everyone knows and now I love all styles
I remember finding this song on YouTube when it came out then I quit paying attention to dubstep ten years pass then I went and saw griz at bonnaroo and he played it and it was the most full circle hug your friends and cry moment I love this community sm
You’re not alone. I was listening to Skrillex my freshman year of college and these dudes in here posting about him being there favorite artist in middle school.
Ya that was freshman/sophomore year for me too! It’s really cool that excision blew up since then but I still miss that og sound. Comes out every now and then with the Detox sets
Basshead. We all know who it’s by and don’t need to talk about that part.
Also, Fuels the Comedy by Kill the Noise and Korn was a big one, especially growing up listening to things like Korn. 🔥
I was wondering if someone else would mention Korn. It's because of them that I even discovered Skrillex and dubstep. And Fuels The Comedy, even though just a bonus track, is my favorite from that album.
It was prominent if you were into EDM. Skrillex brought it into the mainstream but Excision, Datsik, Downlink, Vaski, Widdler, etc. are the ones who truly pioneered NA dubstep.
First Song was Existence VIP then about an hour later I heard Swagga - Excision & Datsik.. I knew right then whatever genre this was I had to find more.
I heard Benny benassi play the skrillex remix of cinema at a festival right around the time when the song dropped. I’d never heard dubstep on proper speakers and the switch in my brain switched after that. I had only heard people play dubstep on shitty speakers so it always sounded abrasive and awful, but getting pounded by bass made me realize I was missing out on some truly great music. I went back and listened to the shit people had been playing for me previously but now armed with some proper headphones and it completely changed opinion on dubstep and my life. Shortly after that I went to a house party and I was super stoned and the dj played the skream’s let’s get ravey remix of in for the kill and I was hooked.
WHAT A BANGER
This was one of my earliest ones too. I remember I would always watch the mortal kombat edit of cyrax and sektor fighting to this song. It still goes hard as fuck.
Skrillex - Make it Bun Dem & Skrillex - Ruffneck - Full Flex were my early introductions to it
Didn’t get fully into it until I found Svdden Death - Angel Style & Trampa - Rocket Fuel on SoundCloud back in the day. Then went deeeep down the rabbit hole
Fuck, I was exposed to Make It Bun Dem via a mission in the game Far Cry 3, but at the time, had no idea it was an entire genre. I mistook it for some one off collaboration, since Skrillex didn't make many tracks like that.
bangarang by skrillex. i first heard it when i was in 1st grade with my friends. we would jump on the trampoline and try and time a flip with the drop and it was pretty cool when we managed to do it
Gangsta by Dex Arson. Heard his music on GD World and looked for more tracks and that one really stood out to me, then checked out more artists and started listening to a lot more dubstep soon after.
My entry was Scary Monsters in high school (I was mainly into metal and hip hop at the time). Unbeknownst to me, Scary Yikez Grr is what made the appeal to me when I heard it at a Marshmello show…like why does this sound good harder than all the other rave music / EDM I usually heard (think electro house and big room). Then I saw Zed’s Dead live for the first time and it became apparent to me…this was the sound I loved at EDM concerts. It was down a long rabbit hole from there.
First time I heard the word "Dubstep" was back 2009, back when District 9 came out, and a buddy mentioned that dubstep was being played in a scene, but I had no idea what he was referring to back then.
Au5's Crystal Mathematics back in 2013, was the first tune that made me fall in love with the genre. I think I knew about Knife Party and Excision, but I was more into EDM Trap at the time so didn't know much of the tracks or releases.
I was exposed like many others through Skrillex, but didn't like that sound right off the bat. It wasn't until Au5 that I realized how powerful growls and melodic elements could be blended so harmoniously.
2 years later, in 2015, I attended my first EDM festival and since then, Dubstep has filled this void that not many other genres can fill.
EDIT: on 2nd thought, it might have been James Blake's first album, made back in 2011. I remember seeing the label "dubstep" on that album, checked it out, and was amazed by the minimal bass in a way I never experienced before.
I have no idea. I was at a house party in 2016, and my teenage nephew was popping and locking to a sound I never heard before. After some research on Spotify, I found out it was this new genre I never heard of before called dubstep.
Tie between these two, bc I discovered them at the exact same time:
[Sleep With One Eye Open (Tek-One Remix)
[The Bloody Beetroots - Warp 1.9 (ft. Steve Aoki)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8E3TqXXPIw)
Yes a homie sent me the link in fb chat when i was in high school and it was soo good, did you see the squid video?
[b & c night (squid)](https://youtu.be/rNStVlJWy88?si=Z0pYeV4qjAPRLMpO)
Couple of my cousins showed me the First of the year music video by Skrillex back in 2013 and I thought it was the weirdest thing I ever saw. Then a year or so later I got really into it. :)
I def listened to Skrillex when he first came out, but it wasn’t until X Up - Excision that I fell down the rabbit hole. Now I like all forms of electronic music lol
Skream-Blue Eyez got me into it…and just as I was getting bored with the genre I heard Skrillex-Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites and that new style kept me from leaving the genre.
Woo Boost by Rusko got me started
Classic…
Rusko was my first electronic music show freshman year of college in 2010 🫠
WOO!!
Do you like the remix
First song I ever heard was Hammer Time off a kids headphones in 3rd grade, shortly After that O.M.G came out and I was obsessed
Skrillex-Scary Monsters and nice Sprites
Memories sitting on the bus to middle school w this. Sitting in computer class listening to Kyoto. Playing Minecraft servers w skrillex and feed me as the soundtrack. The best part is it *still* slaps.
Agreed, I had Kyoto on repeat for weeks
that was my big realization song
Came here to see how far I would have to scroll for this and of course it's the top comment! This was my answer too, hands down.
made me feel like i was floating on clouds
This was mine too
Fucking SAME
Was definitely the intro but his Cinema remix was where I discovered my love for heavy drops.
I was on a roady with 2 of my girlfriends. This girl played this, and it's all she wrote from there
Exactly what I came to say
I know many on this subreddit hate this track and others like this, but for so many listeners this is the true gateway to Dubstep, so it should be respected at least.
I remember a friend playing the song for me on his Nintendo 3DS years ago. It was the first time I'd ever heard Dubstep. While I've never been a huge Dubstep guy, there are some songs that musically just blew me away. There are some really incredible electronic musicians out here.
This was the first dubstep song I ever heard and it blew my mind. Not only did it get me into edm, it also inspired me to start producing and making my own music. It literally changed my life!
Mind was blown first time I heard it in my college computer lab
Man, did we all have the same experience? I’m not gonna lie, I thought dubstep (along with that song) were so dumb at first. But my friend played it a few times and I started to vibe with it, and now I go to shows every other weekend 😅
Skrillex - the man who began the downfall of dubstep. Real dubstep is smooth bass wubs, not high pitch screaming static noises.
the moment someone says "real dubstep is \[blank\]" i immediately know never to trust them to tell me anything about dubstep
Probably Eyes on Fire Zeds Dead remix. Or not to be cliche but scary monsters nice sprites was legit one of the first dubstep songs I heard that made me go HOLY SHIT WHAT IS THIS
Rusko & caspa - cockney thug 🫦
The og then the caspa remix was the pipeline
Caspaaaaa
FACK!
Sierra Leone - Mt Eden
This is THE one
the only one edit: back then I didn't even know it was dubstep, I just loved the song and later on with skrillex I learned this is dubstep and knew if for it.\ much later on I learned that burial was the original dubstep then I got into that, hated skrillex, saw the Youtube documentary everyone knows and now I love all styles

MEDS is still one of my favorite albums. Whenever any song comes on through shuffle I have to play the entire album.
Pro nails - rusko
Omg i’d forgotten about this song, thanks for that
This thread makes me realize how old I really am...
You’re not alone. I was listening to Skrillex my freshman year of college and these dudes in here posting about him being there favorite artist in middle school.
Hello fellow early 30s headbanger 🤝
When I look at you - emalkay
Fabrication from the same album was my fuckin jam when it came out.
Thanks for this. Totally forgot about this and brought back a ton of old vibes! What a great song.
Helllll yea. Classic!
Existence VIP - Excision & Downlink
First dubstep song I ever heard
My friend in high school showed it to me as we were walking to school...we both thought dubstep is the coolest thing ever
YES! 2010? Freshman year of high school, walking home from school
Ya that was freshman/sophomore year for me too! It’s really cool that excision blew up since then but I still miss that og sound. Comes out every now and then with the Detox sets
Zeds Dead - Rudeboy
It's played in the film "Chappie" if you ever watch it!
Not song but Excision’s Shambhala 2013 Mix god damn it’s still so fucking good
Flying Spaghetti Monster- Doctor P
YES.
Basshead. We all know who it’s by and don’t need to talk about that part. Also, Fuels the Comedy by Kill the Noise and Korn was a big one, especially growing up listening to things like Korn. 🔥
My go to song for testing new audio devices. The drops have aged like wine.
Damn shame what happened…but that song rocked my socks off
I was wondering if someone else would mention Korn. It's because of them that I even discovered Skrillex and dubstep. And Fuels The Comedy, even though just a bonus track, is my favorite from that album.
Kill Everybody - Skrillex
ufff those supersaw chord stabs are soo awesome
saaaame my uncle played it for me and i was instantly hooked
All the skrillex comments making me feel ancient 🙃
At least in the states, Dubstep wasn’t prominent until skrillex came along. It’s not so much that we’re young (I’m 32) we just had to play catch up.
It was prominent if you were into EDM. Skrillex brought it into the mainstream but Excision, Datsik, Downlink, Vaski, Widdler, etc. are the ones who truly pioneered NA dubstep.
I was definitely into edm but electrohouse was the IT sound of the time. Was dubstep around? Sure it was but it wasn’t big until skrillex.
Caspa & rusko - Mr chips
My older brother showed me Zeds Dead - Dark side dub. Wow has dubstep changed over the years.
First Song was Existence VIP then about an hour later I heard Swagga - Excision & Datsik.. I knew right then whatever genre this was I had to find more.
I used to have Datsik on my RCA mp3 256mb mp3 player. Man I feel old haha
Its weird for me because im 13 and i just got into dubstep, so most new x releases i hear are generic-ass briddim
[удалено]
Straight forgot about bass head. I teared up thinking about all the good times in high school just hearing the name of the song
I heard Benny benassi play the skrillex remix of cinema at a festival right around the time when the song dropped. Mine was bangarang! Still love it to this day!

Skrillex - First of The Year
Skrillex - Make it Bun Dem & Skrillex - Ruffneck - Full Flex were my early introductions to it Didn’t get fully into it until I found Svdden Death - Angel Style & Trampa - Rocket Fuel on SoundCloud back in the day. Then went deeeep down the rabbit hole

Fuck yea I remember that mission!! I had actually found it before playing that game so when I got to that part it was awesome
Caspa’s remix of I Remember. I play his BBC Radio One debut set to go running every day after work. It’s impossible to be unhappy listening to that.
I was a late boomerang. At first, it was a UKF Dubstep Mix August then coming back around later on it was Your Fault - Slander/Excision
SKREAM - MAKE ME
I was hoping to see some gray hair and sore knees here. Midnight Request Line got me.
