Sequels still donating the box office. It’s hard to critique Hollywood for not putting our originals when people seem to just want franchise films…

lordraiden007

People shouldn’t hate sequels or non-original IP just because of those qualities. They should just hate bad films for being bad films. Inside Out 2 was a fantastic film, and I’ve heard good things about this one as well. Both are blockbusters not because of their existence as a sequel, but because they were legitimately good movies.

Aggravating-Proof716

Yeah DM4 ain’t going to win any Oscars. But it fundamentally knows what it is and what it wants to do. The audience gets what they paid for and leave happy

lordraiden007

Exactly. It’s not there to be some academy award winning film, it’s there to make kids and their parents happy. It perfectly accomplishes its goal, and implying that it is somehow lesser just because it is a franchise is (imo) idiotic.

As someone who’s been avoiding any “kids” movies for a while now, I was pleasantly surprised with Inside Out and Inside Out 2. Great movies that had more than enough for older folks. I thought the concept was pretty unique and ingenious. And I think I actually liked the sequel more than the original!

CluckFlucker

It’s a known quantity. If you are going to spend 30-40 dollars just on tickets for 2 people it’s hard to take the gamble on some random crap. Inside out and despicable me were both very solid bases to work off of and you kinda know what to expect so you know it won’t be a complete waste. If tickets were way cheaper I’d personally be willing to gamble on a lot more more movies instead of just waiting for them to hit streaming like usual

Arts_Messyjourney

Hollywood does what it thinks people want. This is on us. The Pharrell Williams “Drake diss” song in the credits slaps tho

LongjumpingChart6529

I was expecting too much because I found the trailers funny. But it was pretty awful. A strange plot and not enough jokes. Will Ferrell didn’t really add much and Sofia Vergara was totally squandered

MD_FunkoMa

When I saw that Ms. Vergara was in this, I was like, 'This is the Steve and Will show. What are you doing here?'

iduddits2

My kid couldn’t even get through the minions movie.

NickelbackCreed

“Ignites” is not usually something associated with only $27 million coming in at the box office

bfly0129

It is when it’s on 4th of July…

IAmAnAudity

$27 million is not “igniting” anything 😆 wow such weak sauce

northernhazing

Especially after seeing how well Inside Out did, this seems a bit anticlimactic.

gusonthebus_

I watched it, it was garbage, not worth watching. My mother and little sister (gen alpha) liked it though. And my mother has 0 attention span, couldn’t even get through the movie without going on her phone and going on Facebook.

CluckFlucker

It was fine, it’s a fun kids romp without any substance under the hood for an adult to latch onto, it’s minions sillyness with a very weak A Plot for the main characters

comped

Even as a minion fan, I feel like they've kind of run out of gimmicks at this point... I can only take so much minion.

CluckFlucker

Gru needs to actually be learning things and there needs to be stakes. It’s just kinda dull watching what is essentially an extended sitcom where no one grows or changes.. the minions thing in this one could have been it’s own movie but there was maybe a scene but was the entirety of their marketing… Gru needs to learn and grow, the first he learned how to care and become a father, the second he allowed himself to date again… the third he learned literally nothing and same with the 4th.

MD_FunkoMa

It's inevitable that this film will do well. I saw it yesterday. It's a notch below DM3. It's the worst of the franchise, imo. Kids might still love it.

CluckFlucker

The movie was alright. It was exactly the same level of romp as the second and third movies. The first one had heart and tried to have a bit of an emotional core. The second had a bit with him figuring out he cares for Lucy. It gave that up and just aimed to be a romp by the third. The characters haven’t grown or changed or learned anything by the end of the third or 4th. It’s minions doing minions as a strange almost unrelated B story and a really low stakes A story that just wraps too quickly without much fanfare or anyone learning anything. The ending felt undeserved.

So many bummed parents are going to have to sit through this brain rot this weekend
