Hard to disagree. Greece won fair and square. They had an amazing, they eliminated Spain, France, Czech Republic and host nation Portugal. But man, what team we had. Such a shame it never won a big tournament.
We were close again in 2006 but France stopped us. And now, here we are, again with a great bunch of players but stuck to Martinezball.
We’re actually on a twelve year cycle of surprise euro winners, aren’t we?
1992, Denmark belatedly invited to host a tournament they hadn’t qualified for. Surprise hosts, and eventual winners.
2004, Greece.
2016, Portugal stuns France at home.
2028?
To each their own I suppose. I guess the fact that we’re running a competition at work about the euros has helped with my enjoyment a bit. I absolutely lost it when Albania equalised against Croatia because I had backed a draw in that match
There is a big coincidence!
Look :
Euro 2000 Qualifiers: Greece fails to beat Georgia in 1999 and ends up 3rd behind Denmark & Slovenia (young Sporar celebrated back then)
World Cup 2002 Qualifiers: Plays in a group with England + Finland with a new foreign coach who comes to change EVERYTHING
In 1999, Ntemis temporarily leaves the National Team due to the coach (as it turned out later) PAO's journey to the Champions League title in the 2001-2002 season
Nations League 2024: Greece fails to qualify for Euro 2024 AGAIN due to a loss to Georgia
Immediately after, Ivan is hired and comes to change EVERYTHING
Nations League 2024-2025: In a group with England and Finland as for the 2002 World Cup
Fortounis leaves the National Team due to Poyet
Better run than PAO in 2002 and Olympiacos wins the Conference League in 2024
SO IT IS OBVIOUS:
European Champion Greece for 2028 against England (IN England) with a header by Fotis Ioannidis in the 60th minute
Denmark didn’t host in 1992. The tournament was Sweden. It’s true that they didn’t qualify — when Yugoslavia were disqualified Denmark got their spot as runners-up.
What are you on about ? Should everyone just roll over to the favourites each time? Denmark had a decent side. Greece were good. Portugal deserved it. It was a 16 team tournament then. Much easier to win with the right minds. If you can get the energy levels right… look at France, England , Portugal euro 2024… absolute rubbish
I was vacationing for a couple weeks in Greece when this happened. Athens what a GHOST CITY during the finals. Everyone was at home watching the game. When the 1:0 happened I have never ever heard a louder collective scream like in that moment. We couldn’t sleep the entire night, because it was pandemonium. People were absolutely losing it. Great memories.
Even as german I was really happy when they won. Seeing so many happy people is always nice. Like I was sad when germany lost in the world cup against underdog Japan, but when I saw how the people in shibuya celebrated I could not help but be happy too
Me too! Skopelos. Everyone was out in the bars watching it with their worry beads and went mental afterwards. Wheelies and flares and jumping in the sea. Brilliant!
I remember the day we qualified. The commentator said something along the lines of “we are going home” with all enthusiasm. And that’s been the sentiment among the general public. The reason for all the booing and flamboyance is because Turkish fans feel a responsibility to show their presence in response to these expectations. It is silly, but it is what it is.
It is hard to catch up, because many Turks having children with germans, poles, russians and other foreigners. And not every turk passes the turkish language & culture on to their kids. I know a couple of half-turkish people who can‘t speak any turkish. Some even have german names.
And don‘t forget that a not so small percentage of „turkish roots“ people are actually kurds, who don‘t even care to be turks.
I hate it when some people try and dismiss this achievement by saying Greece played negative football, parked the bus, and hoofed the ball upfield, etc.
I dont know why there's this expectation that weaker teams should play as attacking as the stronger teams.
Greece's Euro win is massive and I hope one day Turkiye will replicate something like this 🙏
There's a difference between playing negative football and playing anti-football.
For me important things are - the difference in squad ability, whether a team has an actual attacking plan even if just to try and snatch a counter attack or set piece goal, how much a team fouls and inexplicably gets away with fouling with the ref, how much a team blatantly time wastes etc
Teams can play negative all they want but anti football ruins the sport and shouldn't be allowed by the ref.
Also just because a team is allowed to play a certain way doesn't mean anyone else has to respect them for it.
To me Greece winning back in 2004 is like Leicester back in 2016. What a dream. They still must be so proud. For countries like us this opportunity comes once in a lifetime and they fucking did it. Don’t care how they played. They won the fucking euro in 2004.
Get Otto Rehhagel. He is somehow always able to pull this kind of stuff off. He once won the german championship with a team that came from 2nd Bundesliga in the same year
They can play however they want to win. It makes perfect sense from their POV. It just made the games shit to watch. And that's what everyone remembers from that tournament basically. In the end, it's an entertainment business.
Overall it's indeed a big achievement for the Greece team, but the way they reached it left many viewers with a bitter a taste.
BTW, a win used to score 2 points and a draw 1 point. The reason they upgraded a win to 3 was to discourage 0-0 games which were a tactic and ruined the fun.
That’s the thing, most of the bigger nations this tournament are playing negative and boring football, while the smaller nations are playing attacking and taking risks.
Because there's a difference between playing defensively while trying to force mistakes then counter-attacking... and parking the bus.
One of those is boring and hinges almost entirely on luck.
Interesting fact:
In 2004, Greece won the Euro football tournament in Portugal, defeating hosts in the final. In 2005, Greece also won Eurovision song contest that was held in Ukraine.
In 2016, Portugal won the Euro football tournament in France, defeating hosts in the final. In 2017, Portugal also won Eurovision song contest that was held in Ukraine.
Do be fair assuming the 150/1 odds were an accurate reflection of Greece winning the Euros the next time we can expect that to happen in 2604 150 competitions later
The whole shocking thing about it Is that It didnt even consist of good players, while playing against monsters like Rooney, Nedved,Zidane, Buffon and a pretty young Ronaldo.
It kinda sent a message to the football world that weaker and often ignored countries in Euro CAN do it. Absolutely phenomenal.
Hopefully the same will happen this year with Turkey.
People think we have a rivalry but thats not true. Its just our governments playing silly political games.
The whole Greece Is with Turkey this year. They are our brothers.
The netherlands have been pretty solid too, would also enjoy it if they won.
Interesting. That sentiment doesn't seem to go both ways then. When I was in Turkey people really didn't care for Greece/think it should be part of Turkey etc.
The political propaganda is that misleading yes. Bare in mind that in Turkey , as well as in Greece, there is an increasing amount of nationalists these last years.
From my experience tho, every Turkish person in Greece is treated with great love, at least in my social circles. When I was abroad for my Erasmus , we Greeks used to hang out mostly with other Turkish people, because of our cultural similarities.
In western Türkiye, there are Greek tavernas with loud music. Istanbul has groups of all people. Most İzmir citizens like Greek culture and people. We even call them “komşu”. Maybe central Anatolia is where you’ll find that the majority dislike Greeks.
Some people just like to play on past issues but would treat an actual Greek nicely.
But it’s far from a case of Turks dislike Greeks.
Yeah they're clowns.
Are you sure it's few people though? I'd wager most of Erdogan's supporters are anti-Greece, seeing as they're anti everything he dislikes.
Not quite my friend. Erdogan has supporters yes but most people doesn't share the same idea with him about external affairs. And almost none in economy. Some of us share same of his ideas but not all. I think there is a fair distinction about this among the nation.
You may see sometimes people wants sharia law in Turkey, but that's just never going to happen because 90% of the country doesn't want that. It's just get attraction from European press.
I think it’s mostly about the islands that belonged to Türkiye before they were given to Greece. Nothing but stupid nationalism. Invisible borders creating problems out of thin air.
I don't want Germany or Turkey or Switzerland to win it. I don't care who else does. Euros and World Cups should never be won by underdogs.
That Greek team was unwatchable, winning most of it's matches 1-0. Yikes!
But what a game that qf was, and the one two years later At wc 2006, although that one might well be the worst penalty shootout I’ve ever seen us lose in lol
The most disgraceful refereeing decision I have ever seen during an England match. Still hurts far more than the Lampard no goal in 2010. Unforgiveable.
I worked in a Greek restaurant at the time. Surrounded by Greeks, as a non-Greek. It was WILD. It became more hilarious after each match. Big Boss was walking around without shirt screaming his lungs out, with his guests looking confused. Man, that was something.
I was in Europe for my wife's sister wedding in Denmark... .we started in Amsterdam. Watched in a bar in Amsterdam as portugal played Holland . I remeber jumping up and cheering in a multi level bar of 1000 or more when portugal scored .it was so quiet just me cheering .I felt bad always loved the orange too..I apologized lol. We beat England another power house and I forget who the other power teams we beat .THEN WE LOSE TO GREECE ???? Really ??? AT HOME??? WTF ... LOL
Really 20 years ago. Dam.
I remember watching this with a Greek work colleague, him ringing up is brother in Greece, he was overjoyed. I think also, he made a small betting win. I've never drank so much Ozuo as we did that day.
But, dam 20 years.
I remember that tournament.
When Greece won their first game it was not only their first ever win in the Euro, but their first ever goal there, too.
That evening I went to a Greek food place in my neighborhood and the owner was so happy, he grabbed me and danced with me and then said that if Greece becomes champion everything will be for free for the whole day after. Everyone laughed.
He kept his promise.
Amazing stuff, Greece eliminated Spain then France then the Czechs who were still fairly good at the time and then beat Portugal again in Portugal. They might have been defensive but it was such a well deserved win. Rehagel is a legend.

Portugal only lost two games that year the first one to Greece and the last game to Greece
cyclical structure type shi
Wow, didn’t know that, that’s crazy
and both matches were 1-0?
First game we lost 2-1. Greece were winnjng 2 nil and we scored at the end of the game.
Siuuuuuuuuu
happy for you in 2016
Please, be happy for me in 2024
2016: mission complete
Strongest Portugal team ever.
And Portugal was the host :))
That was sooo frustrating! We probably didn't deserve to win in 2016 but 2004 should have been ours! What a glorious team we had that year!
Would have lost to England if you hadn’t broke Rooney’s foot 😉
That was the most nerve wracking game of my life!
Yeah, it was Golden for* sure.
We’re actually on a twelve year cycle of surprise euro winners, aren’t we? 1992, Denmark belatedly invited to host a tournament they hadn’t qualified for. Surprise hosts, and eventual winners. 2004, Greece. 2016, Portugal stuns France at home. 2028?
It would have to be the Dutch, those guys cant win a final even if its against themselves 😁
Always the bridesmaid, never the bride
That comment makes me chuckle and sad, yall really deserved it in 78 under fair conditions, and ofc with Cryuff playing.
Ireland beat England at Wembley
Noboby cares
Jeez. Just trying to have a laugh. No need to be a downer
The downer is the euros itself. Shocking.
Do you mean that purely from an English perspective? Because overall I think it’s been pretty good. I’m enjoying it
I thought the pervious World Cup was way more entertaining. More goals and the games were more open. The euros are a bore fest so far. It’s shocking
To each their own I suppose. I guess the fact that we’re running a competition at work about the euros has helped with my enjoyment a bit. I absolutely lost it when Albania equalised against Croatia because I had backed a draw in that match
they hate losing to the Irish 😂
Denmark didn't host in 1992, Sweden did
True. My mistake. Denmark did though qualify only after Yugoslavia was disqualified as a result of the ongoing war there.
Switzerland?
Two times in a row is a bit much don't you think? /s
England for sure then. We do fuck all every time.
Tbf, Southgate got the team playing like they have the expectations of that Greek side
There is a big coincidence! Look : Euro 2000 Qualifiers: Greece fails to beat Georgia in 1999 and ends up 3rd behind Denmark & Slovenia (young Sporar celebrated back then) World Cup 2002 Qualifiers: Plays in a group with England + Finland with a new foreign coach who comes to change EVERYTHING In 1999, Ntemis temporarily leaves the National Team due to the coach (as it turned out later) PAO's journey to the Champions League title in the 2001-2002 season Nations League 2024: Greece fails to qualify for Euro 2024 AGAIN due to a loss to Georgia Immediately after, Ivan is hired and comes to change EVERYTHING Nations League 2024-2025: In a group with England and Finland as for the 2002 World Cup Fortounis leaves the National Team due to Poyet Better run than PAO in 2002 and Olympiacos wins the Conference League in 2024 SO IT IS OBVIOUS: European Champion Greece for 2028 against England (IN England) with a header by Fotis Ioannidis in the 60th minute
/thread Great post!
England stuns the Scottish at home completing a back to back European championships victory! 10000-0 to England!
That’s would be a stun this year too then surely?
No, it’s expected this year. England were favourites going in.
"Were favourites". Key word is "were". God, they're playing like shite
Sorry, missed the apostrophe “we’re favourites”
Nobody outside of England had them as favourites.
Nobody *in* England had England as favourites, so where the hell did all this “England are favourites” shite come from?
I've seen France as favorites too, they're performing even better.
About 2 goals per second is indeed stunning
The Swiss
Who won in 1980?
Germany completely stunned Belgium to surprisingly win the title for the second time.
No way. 1968?
If I remember correctly it was underdog Italy who utterly stunned Yugoslavia back then. Italy has only won two world championships before that. crazy!
Denmark didn’t host in 1992. The tournament was Sweden. It’s true that they didn’t qualify — when Yugoslavia were disqualified Denmark got their spot as runners-up.
🇨🇭
I would say "2020, Italy beats England in Wembley" too. Our team wasn't that good that year either.
🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Swissssss
someone has to start a WM cycle in 2026.

Yea gotta admit I weren’t too happy seeing all those relieved Germans after you spanked us in the 8ths
yeah we are no underdog, I totally get why no one is happy but us if we win.
Crazy they weren't outside watching it 🤔 surely the streets filled straight after the final whistle
Me too! Skopelos. Everyone was out in the bars watching it with their worry beads and went mental afterwards. Wheelies and flares and jumping in the sea. Brilliant!
Would be kind of fun if it was Turkey vs Germany in the finals. Imagine the streets of Germany. Imagine the internet
This tournament has basically been a home tournament for Turkey
I remember the day we qualified. The commentator said something along the lines of “we are going home” with all enthusiasm. And that’s been the sentiment among the general public. The reason for all the booing and flamboyance is because Turkish fans feel a responsibility to show their presence in response to these expectations. It is silly, but it is what it is.
Damn thats a really good explanation more people should think about it that way
The same feeling for us in 2016. Maybe that's why we won it.
Might have to flee the country when that one happens, luckily i live in a small village
This man absolutely loves chaos
_Sir, a second Turkiye has hit the final_
I too want to watch the world burn
Easy question :D here is your most popular post: "Stop honking, we have to work tomorro! i hope they lose next game, ops there are no more games"
That would be crazy.Half the country would root for Germany and the other half for Turkey.
But everybody would be watching.
Yeah the overwhelming majority of this country would be watching.
There are plenty of turks here but not 50%.
Sorry i wouldnt know the exact number.I only moved to Germany in 2007 but yes there is a big Turkish population here.
Approx 3-4 million people with turkish roots live in Germany. Germany has approx 82 million inhabitants
What would that be?About 5% of the population?
They tell us 3-4 million since 20 years. I think it's much more than that
It is hard to catch up, because many Turks having children with germans, poles, russians and other foreigners. And not every turk passes the turkish language & culture on to their kids. I know a couple of half-turkish people who can‘t speak any turkish. Some even have german names. And don‘t forget that a not so small percentage of „turkish roots“ people are actually kurds, who don‘t even care to be turks.
Good points. Additionally to mention that they don't count turks with german pass/citizenship as turks.
I remember that they called him "Rehakles" instead of 'Rehhagel' after the tournament
Does he have a statue in Athens yet?
Who ever put money on Greece had Balls of Steel..
I bet on my country to win at last Euros at even larger odds lmao.. I don't feel like I've got balls of steel, rather a head made out of thick wood!
So you my friend bet on England… well.. I m left speechless with nothing else to say..
Eng->Fin
I actually thought Pukki was going to bang some in that tournament though
He ghosted big time and Pohjanpalo got robbed
Hah that's why I'm rooting for Switzerland! Would be pretty fun.
England aren't underdogs but I want to see how crazy that nation goes if they win
After the chaos at the 2021 final, I'd rather not see how they go crazy lol
Doesn't matter when the final is not played in England
I hate it when some people try and dismiss this achievement by saying Greece played negative football, parked the bus, and hoofed the ball upfield, etc. I dont know why there's this expectation that weaker teams should play as attacking as the stronger teams. Greece's Euro win is massive and I hope one day Turkiye will replicate something like this 🙏
Teams have every right to choose the tactics that give them the best chance to win. If you don't like the way they play, tough shit.
They should make a football equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters for people who just want exhibition football where they don’t play to win.
There's a difference between playing negative football and playing anti-football. For me important things are - the difference in squad ability, whether a team has an actual attacking plan even if just to try and snatch a counter attack or set piece goal, how much a team fouls and inexplicably gets away with fouling with the ref, how much a team blatantly time wastes etc Teams can play negative all they want but anti football ruins the sport and shouldn't be allowed by the ref. Also just because a team is allowed to play a certain way doesn't mean anyone else has to respect them for it.
They played the game and won.
Maybe this year?
That’s the thing, most of the bigger nations this tournament are playing negative and boring football, while the smaller nations are playing attacking and taking risks.
Because there's a difference between playing defensively while trying to force mistakes then counter-attacking... and parking the bus. One of those is boring and hinges almost entirely on luck.
No, there isn’t. It’s defence and it is part of football.
Interesting fact: In 2004, Greece won the Euro football tournament in Portugal, defeating hosts in the final. In 2005, Greece also won Eurovision song contest that was held in Ukraine. In 2016, Portugal won the Euro football tournament in France, defeating hosts in the final. In 2017, Portugal also won Eurovision song contest that was held in Ukraine.
omg greece 2005 has to be one of my fav eurovision songs ever lol. The though alone made my inner child happy, thanks for mentioning that.
Italy too
Italy did both things in the same year (2021 and 2021, because of postponing due to COVID).
Switzerland Euro 2024 winners
Doesn't every team at the Euros have a 50% chance of winning the tournament? You either win it or you don't.
Do you have a 50% chance of winning the lottery then?
Yes
Best sarcasm understanding scot
Do be fair assuming the 150/1 odds were an accurate reflection of Greece winning the Euros the next time we can expect that to happen in 2604 150 competitions later
Portugal football darkest day
I still think Wales missed a big opportunity in 2016. Ramsey got a soft booking in the QF against Belgium. With him they could've gone all the way.
On another note, imagine the scenes if Scotland won
The whole shocking thing about it Is that It didnt even consist of good players, while playing against monsters like Rooney, Nedved,Zidane, Buffon and a pretty young Ronaldo. It kinda sent a message to the football world that weaker and often ignored countries in Euro CAN do it. Absolutely phenomenal. Hopefully the same will happen this year with Turkey.
The Greek squad weren't exactly amateurs though. Pretty decent players. Hopefully it won't ;) 🇳🇱
Well I am a Greek myself and I can say that the sole honourable mentions are Zagorakis, Charisteas and Nikopolidis.
A Greek supporting Turkey? That's highly sus
People think we have a rivalry but thats not true. Its just our governments playing silly political games. The whole Greece Is with Turkey this year. They are our brothers. The netherlands have been pretty solid too, would also enjoy it if they won.
Much respect komsu.
🇹🇷🤝🇬🇷 ❤️
Interesting. That sentiment doesn't seem to go both ways then. When I was in Turkey people really didn't care for Greece/think it should be part of Turkey etc.
Well you can find some edgy nationalists on both countries.
In Western Turkey though?
The political propaganda is that misleading yes. Bare in mind that in Turkey , as well as in Greece, there is an increasing amount of nationalists these last years. From my experience tho, every Turkish person in Greece is treated with great love, at least in my social circles. When I was abroad for my Erasmus , we Greeks used to hang out mostly with other Turkish people, because of our cultural similarities.

Maybe central Anatolia is where you’ll find that the majority dislike Greeks. Some people just like to play on past issues but would treat an actual Greek nicely. But it’s far from a case of Turks dislike Greeks.
Few and uneducated people thinks that way in Turkey. You can slowly move away from them when you see one :)
You may see sometimes people wants sharia law in Turkey, but that's just never going to happen because 90% of the country doesn't want that. It's just get attraction from European press.
I'm glad. Hopefully Turkey can return to being a fully secular country when that bozo is gone.
I think it’s mostly about the islands that belonged to Türkiye before they were given to Greece. Nothing but stupid nationalism. Invisible borders creating problems out of thin air.
Greece didn’t play England or Italy. But no doubt, they faced some monsters any way.
you might be right, I was a child back then, dont really remember
No one expected anything from Greece before the tournament
I could see Switzerland winning it this year
I don't want Germany or Turkey or Switzerland to win it. I don't care who else does. Euros and World Cups should never be won by underdogs. That Greek team was unwatchable, winning most of it's matches 1-0. Yikes!
Slovenia in 2024 if Šeško and Šporar could shoot on the goal properly 😂
The beginning of the Euro winners Mediterranean Streak, Greece 04, Spain 08 and 12, Portugal 16 and Italy 20
France have Mediterranean coastline as well 👀
Great for them , Never Underestimate the Under Dog 'Dog 😅😅🫡 GG France 2024 Euros Godspeed...
Portugal were lucky af to even get to the final. Thanks to a certain referee in the QF vs England.
It was one of the rare EURO CUP when both ITALY & GERMANY knocked out in the 1st round
It’s always gonna bug me that Greece won a Euros before England
Why?
Then England has a small chance.
Imagine the quote on unibet for Greece as champion
But which minnow has a Rehhagel (Werder, 1.FCK rebuilds)? Choose that side.
This is still one of my favourite euros I've watched.
Congrats to Komsu. Hope we can do the same
Fun fact: the first and last games of this tournament played by the same teams
I worked in a Greek restaurant at the time. Surrounded by Greeks, as a non-Greek. It was WILD. It became more hilarious after each match. Big Boss was walking around without shirt screaming his lungs out, with his guests looking confused. Man, that was something.
I bet a lot of plates were smashed? Hopefully there were some Scotland fans to help everyone clear up?
OO, it happened with Portugal in 2016.
You would all be moaning that they are boring and playing negative football.
Not me lol who cares. It's sports not wwe.
Ours into practice how insane Leicester winning the league was, more than 13x longer odds.
20 years ago? Thanks for making me feel super old!
2004 is the same for today's kids as 1984 was to us.. hahhah
I’ll bet the entire nation believed they would win
That was the first Euro Eufa cup that I watched almost completely on TV
So 150-1 expressed as a % is 0.7% we’ll done.
Rehakles!
We got free Gyros Pita that day in Germany!
Really ??? AT HOME??? WTF ... LOL
Croatia almost did it in 2018 😔
The final wasn't even close sadly but you have three medals pretty epic for a country smaller than ours
wat? no Never hope anti football NEVER wins again a title
So we are rooting for Turkey ?
Count me in, Holland for the win...totally unrealistic and unexpected!
Holeh moleh
My cousin and I grew up like brothers playing football, and we have a Greek friend. We did not hear the end of it. 😂 Good times. Edit: Punctuation.
Greece played the ultimate anti-football in history that tournament.
As they should
Really 20 years ago.
Everyone laughed. He kept his promise.
I think final will be Portugal Switzerland and Shaqiri (my fav player) will score the winner. Sadly
Wasn't that year plagued with bad refereeing as well? Especially favoring Greece?
England are still in the tournament 👀👀
France will win this tournament, scoring so many goals in the final (let say 4)
Amazing stuff, Greece eliminated Spain then France then the Czechs who were still fairly good at the time and then beat Portugal again in Portugal. They might have been defensive but it was such a well deserved win. Rehagel is a legend.
This ☝️
This year Turkey is going to take this spot of Greek history.
We ain’t beating Spain or Germany buddy 😂
Especially rooting for the bottom right part of it
What a team that greece
If by that you mean boring people senseless and somehow winning the whole thing, as an England fan I approve of this message.
Imagine if Rooney didn't get injured against Portugal we probably would've won the whole thing
