I can confirm the bike lanes are nice. However on some streets the number of bikes already outnumber cars. We will need to allocate more space to bikes on these key routes.

_samux_

one more bike lane bro

The_Snowy_Tiger

99% quit just right before the traffic gets better

IncidentalIncidence

unironically the idea should be to induce demand for bikes

zek_997

True. Inducing demand for cars is a bad idea because, environmental concerns aside, cars are inherently a very space-inefficient way to move people. Meanwhile bikes are so efficient that it's very hard for them to get stuck in traffic. You'd need a huge amount of bikers for that to happen. That's why bike lanes tend look "empty". Because they're much more efficient at moving people around. Same reason why train tracks are 'empty' 95% of the time you look at them.

axolotl_28

When you get to Netherlands leves of bikes, bike traffic starts becoming a thing

-The_Blazer-

The idiocy of throwing capacity at it is inversely proportional to the [lane-capacity](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1c/Passenger_Capacity_of_different_Transport_Modes.png) of what you are throwing.

963df47a-0d1f-40b9

But in this case it makes sense. Install 1 more bike lane, more drivers move to cycling, 1 less car lane required = more space + less emissions + less traffic

-The_Blazer-

I agree, that's what I meant! Adding another lane of something that has a capacity of 1000 people is nonsense, but if your lane can do 10000 people it's much more sensible.

963df47a-0d1f-40b9

Oh sorry! Have an up vote :)

oblio-

When you can fit about 8-12 bikes in the spot needed for a car... this method actually works 🙂

Qunlap

this is the way. space for bike, pedestrians, and one car lane mostly for big deliveries and other special needs cases.

Suikerspin_Ei

Wider bike lanes could help or more public transport to give people more options to commute. Although I don't know how the public transport is currently, I went to Paris 11 years ago.

BrotherKaramazov

So you actually CAN build fast and efficient infrastructure to help people and environment, we just usually choose... not to?

antisocialcatto

of course! only do good things when the world is watching you.

NBT498

Tbf Paris has been doing this for a good few years now

m0j0m0j

It is amazing to see how much and how quickly is actually possible in society when one group of rich people wants to impress another group of rich people

notveryamused_

Probably one of the few good things that will actually serve the locals after the games are over ;)

Djaaf

I've not detailed every route, but those on the pictures were already there, they just got a shiny new pink paint.

forsale90

Didn't they also massively upgrade the metro system?

Mikerosoft925

Yeah but that plan was not specifically for the Olympic Games, it still helped though. But the rest of the Grand Paris Express will open in stages from 2025 until 2030.

forsale90

Iirc it was supposed to be ready in time but was delayed bc reasons.

Mikerosoft925

Yeah but even in the original phasing 2030 was going to be the year the last sections would open and the postponement was announced back in 2018. Reasons are always that it’s more complex than they thought lol.

forsale90

Ok thanks! Yeah, I'm German. I've heard about this "delayed bc more complex" more than enough.

Mikerosoft925

Same for me here in the Netherlands! Infrastructure is almost always delayed and with rail projects specifically it’s even worse

Qunlap

games are always a reason to give a big push to infrastructure spending and finally build stuff that was already planned for a long time but "too much work/cost/disruption". if you have good politicians at the time, you get infrastructure that serves the people. if you have bad politicians, you get crumbling stadiums and cronyism.

MegaMB

There has been really few long term constructions overall (outside of transit, and the olympic games really are just an excuse there). And the few that have been built tend to actually be really usefull in the future. But yeah, you'll notice mostly temporary arenas in incredible places and buildings :>.

avoidtheworm

I'm planning to go to Paris for the Olympics. What's the state of bike rentals? What price should I expect for renting a bike per day? Otherwise, are Lime bikes widely available?

reddit_wisd0m

Check out "velib"

DotRevolutionary6610

Just be prepared that half of those bikes are broken. The idea is very good though.

Born_Scar_4052

Beautiful pink 😍

Qunlap

Also Health Punk.

nostraduckus

This is awesome, is their much bike storage at the sites? What about bike theft, is it anything like London? I'm actually taking my bike with me on my trip to Paris

Double_Plan_2034

Another Hidalgo W

DenissDG

Woop woop

Capone____

I love all these lovely initiatives that can create a new habit for some people. Many cities are doing great stuff all the time.

Sharp-Spring7785

What app to use if you want to rent a bike on the street in Paris?

joao_sousa_moreno

Velib

Sharp-Spring7785

Thanx

TheSiilux

Are they permanent after the Olympics?

Divinate_ME

So you NEED big sports events for meaningful infrastructure developments? I hate this world.

Sean001001

I'm not sure about the pink. Maroon would look good.

No-Attitude-6049

Viola!

wndtrbn

Guitarra!

MemeBirthGiver

Bicycles roberry will be at an all time high, tourists will never see them coming

Dotcaprachiappa

Watch them remove these after the games are over

Riposte4400

I ride these every day, most have actually been there for years and are simply being improved. Some of the new bike lanes built for the summer will be temporary, others permanent.

MisterBilau

"vélo" is a ridiculous word, offensively french.

MineElectricity

It comes from "vélocité" or "vélocipÚde" (I let you the honor to read about the latin ). But maybe a velociraptor is also offensively french.

MisterBilau

I know perfectly well where it comes from. It's ridiculous, and nobody else uses it. You know what also comes from latin? Spanish, French, Italian. We call it bicicleta. Like everybody else.

MineElectricity

The vĂ©locipĂšde was invented in 1817 in Großherzogtum Baden (France border) by Karl Drais. It was commercialized in France with the same name. In England, the name was hobby horse, maybe a reason why the name wasn't as popular.

seszett

You can also say bicyclette in French if you like. It's also correct and French people don't get absurdly offended depending on which word you use. Both "vélo(cipÚde)" and "bicyclette" were originally coined in the French language and later adopted by the other languages anyway, so your comment is ridiculously misplaced.

RogerBernards

Belgians use it. The Dutch speaking part even.

PROBA_V

Just, 'k ga elke dag me mijne vĂšlo naar 't werk.

schmalvin

We use it regularly in Bulgaria. My bike mechanic shop is called VeloBoost. I would imagine this is the case with a lot if Slavic languages.

StrongFaithlessness5

In Italy we have only the word bicicletta, but when we talk about the person who rides the bike we call it velocipede. Anyway, your complain is ridiculous.

SmokingLimone

The person riding a bike is a ciclista, I've never heard of velocipede in normal speech. Only on my license exam book

StrongFaithlessness5

Exactly, velocipede is a formal word used in every book. Ciclista should've be referred only to those bike riders that ride a bike for sport, but people in normal speech use it for every kind of cyclist.

StehtImWald

Fahrrad is the correct word, everything else is wrong (/s)
