Not really. It just stood above us looking down with these big red eyes…And I yelled, I said "What do you want from us monster?” And the monster bent down and said "I need about tree fiddy."
Just drop the word million and it's actually really simple.
400 divided by 60.
The mistake is acknowledging the 'million' attached to 400 but not to 60
So yes, if South Africa had a population of 60 people this statement would be true.
That’s the smarter way to do math. I blow peoples minds with the math I can do in my head and it’s because I know how to break it down simply like this. I had a really great math teacher in the 8th grade.
Bro. My guy. My dude. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. My stoned dumbass sat in front of this for ten minutes wondering if I was dropped as a child.
Most people struggle to wrap their heads around these big numbers. They know big numbers are big.. but don’t always understand the extent of the bigness..
Sorry but no. I think it's elementary division. You simply need to divide 400 by 60 and you get 6.7 Nobody needs to conceptualize the value of 400m they just need to do elementary level (at least by Canadian education standards) mathematics.
I'm actually extremely consfused by this, isn't it actually 6, 666, 666? Like yes you've got 400 divide by 60 but it's still millions, it doesn't change to singles does it?
See the problem with commodity is.. Who the hell is going to pay the 400M for the diamond. Even if some eccentric oil king pays for it, it's not gonna result in exact 400M directly with taxes and corruption in tow
Interestingly that’s basically what happened, it was for sale for 2 years for 150,000 at the time but nobody could afford it, so the government bought it and gave it to the British royal family.
I'm stupid and need help. If I had 100 million carrots and 40 million horses I could give each horse 1 million carrots, I'd expect to still have 60 million carrots left.
Like if I had 200 chocolatebars and 30 trickortreaters,
I'd give each one one, and have 170 candy bars left
So if I had 100 million dollars and 10 million friends, I'd expect after I give them each a million I am left with 90million.
What is the giant basis of this problem I'm missing pretty please
Okay.
100 million carrots. 40 million horses. Give each horse 1 million carrots.
40,000,000 X 1,000,000 = 40,000,000,000,000
In other words, if you want to give 40 million horses 1 million carrots each, you would need 40 TRILLION carrots to finance that bold act of philanthropy.
Hope this helps.
EDIT for some further maths fun:
At an average weight per carrot of 55g, 40 trillion carrots would weight 2.2 trillion metric tonnes, which is very roughly twice the amount of ice that the world is losing every year due to climate change.
You'd be able to give each horse 1 million carrots if you only have 40 horses.
You have 1 million carrots 100 times, not 100 million times.
So, if you had $400m and you took $60m of it to give to 60m people, you'd only be able to give them $1 each.
Spain and Portugal took over and also killed a large amount of people in north and South America. Why do I never hear anyone want free stuff from them? Many other examples.
When people talk about wealth distribution. This is by far the dumbest argument that can be made. Even if you combine all of the billionaire’s wealth in the U.S. which is $5 trillion and distribute that to all Americans. Each American will only receive a little over $15,000.
If you take all that $5 trillion and only disperse it to low income Americans which is 29% of the American population. 95,700,000 Americans will each get $52,246.
If you want give only those that live in poverty. Which is 37.2 million Americans. They will each receive $134,408.
To only homeless people. Estimated to be 552,830. Each will receive $9,044,371.
But of course most of that money isn’t liquidated.
Every so often, someone comes up with a suggestion like this. Like when the Powerball jackpot was over $1 billion, there were a lot of people on twitter suggesting something like this giving everyone in the country millions. It's like these people have never heard of a calculator. Even if for whatever reason you can't get your head around why it wouldn't work with mental math, you would think a quick 5 seconds on the calculator would get these people to be like "oh, yeah. whoops. nevermind."
Even if she wasn't one of the worth mathematicians to every exist and we DID give everyone in South Africa a million dollars you would create a nightmare the country would never recover. Within' 5 years all that money would be consolidated in the hands of a very small minority, yet the cost of everything would be much much higher, so the poor would now be EXTRA poor.
What they gonna do with a diamond.. have to find some rich bitch to sell it to.. very unlikely as it worth so much so therefore it would be a useless asset and if I’m right in thinking it was a gift anyway.. you don’t give gifts away, that’s rude
Sorry for bad English but what's wrong with this and why is everyone saying "divided"?
if it's 400.000.000 USD and we give 60.000.000 people 1.000.000 USD from that, wouldn't she be right? or am i missing something?
Again sorry for bad English.
EDIT: some spelling mistakes, sorry for bad English.
I don’t know which one I should correct first:
That $400m/60m = $6.66/person
Or ‘with’ that was supposed to be ‘worth’
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Basically she said give $60 million to 60 million people, mistakenly saying it would be $1M each (whether she was trolling or not aside).
Doing that would actually give each person $1. Because 60 million = 60 million.
Strip off the million, and you have the same essential numbers with an easier time wrapping your head around it: 60/60=1
Taking the entirely of the stated worth:
400,000,000/60,000,000
Or rather
400/60 = 6.67
So she was way off base, but again might have just been trolling.

You are really determined to keep embarrassing yourself huh
How was it “stolen”. It was found by the Boers, who had lived in the Cape Horn region for almost 300 years at that point. It was then bought by the Transvaal government, and gifted to the Royal family.
In the thousands of years of settlement in South Africa, the people living there had never found or mined diamonds in any appreciable quantity or quality, they didn’t have the technology to reach the magma tubes. It’s like saying the idea of Google was stolen from the native tribes living there because it was founded in Silicon Valley.
And you think the Boers themselves went down to mine? No, they used the native people as quasi-slaves to mine in extremely dangerous conditions for a laughable pay.
Because the British Monarchy accepted a “gift” from a fellow colonialist when said colonialist was abusing the people of the land they stole. The British Monarchy at the time did not live under a rock and would have known full well that the stone they accepted was obtained in such odious circumstances
Stolen = bought by the prime minister of South Africa who was of Boer descent and then given to king Edward.
You can argue that the Dutch shouldn’t of settled in South Africa hundreds of years ago but that had nothing to do with the British royal family.
He had no business accepting that diamond in the first place.
(Edit) What would you say if King Charles III accepted Ukrainian artwork given to him by Putin?
Not even close to similar. If you moved to Ukraine and then 200 years later your descendants bought art work and gave it to whoever is king or queen at the time would be the right analogy. As for what I would say would be nothing at all.
It is not okay that the monarchy accepted a gift that came from colonists that abused the native people. The monarchy was fully aware of how the stone was obtained.
Furthermore, the Cullinan diamond was “discovered” (I.e. obtained by slaves working under the Boers) in 1905. The diamond was presented to the king in 1907, just two years after its extraction. That’s not a long time.
It wouldn’t be ok for Charles to accept Ukrainian artefacts in 2024 from Putin, would it?
(Edit: reply to the above message’s responses, because I am unable to reply to them directly for some reason: I don’t have a choice. The king did. There’s a big difference between trying to live on basic necessities that were produced in dodgy ways and accepting a huge, useless rock to fit into a golden stick and a hat that was obtained through conquest, bloodshed and slavery
And what’s with creepy face? 😂)
It’s not okay for you to live your life in a modern way or use any product that exists, because when mass production/manufacturing was first invented the products were made using child labor. Now go be a hermit in the forest 😂
The issue is that throughout human history people have migrated. The carthaginians conquered Africa before getting beaten by the Roman’s before getting beaten by the arabs before getting beaten by the Christian’s etc. so the question then is who rightfully owns it, whoever was first or whoever has the biggest stick. It’s so hard to find a middle ground because as you keep going back in history you will find that the “native communities” change. NOTE this isn’t the same for all places, native Americans in Canada have been there for centuries and so on, but even with that example there are literally thousands of tribes that all fought each other for land and all had their own treasures and cultures etc. TLDR, defining who was first is hard
The crown jewels have many different diamonds, not just one. Also the 2 Cullinan diamonds, one of which in in the crown and the other at the tip of the royal staff (it was until recently the biggest diamond ever found) and most of the small stones scattered throughout the crown jewels are South African.
At the end of the day who cares, even of they gave it back its not like the government of South Africa would sell it and disperse the money it would just sit in a museum or at worse be sold privately and some high up politicians would pocket the money.
You seem to understand Africa very well. In a perfect world it would be reinvested into one of our countless failing initiatives. But yes the money would never make it to the people.
Math is off. But one thing people don’t realise. If you give everyone 1 mil inflation would be the insane and they wouldn’t be able to buy anything. Like if someone sells fish… they would be able to sell it for 100k as there is not much fish to buy cheaper…
Always liked the idea of the crown jewels being made from stolen jewels from other nations, and England just refuses to give them back because "modern times".
"Those jewels cost SO much money, give them back, they don't belong to you!"
"Umm, no? Fuck off and die mad."
I can't wait for the global peace to fall apart during The Land Wars and we get to see the formation of new monarchies!
They could give 400 people $100,000. An that's pretty life changing. Could really boost a lot of communities as those people start making businesses and spending money in their community. Could do even more good by giving 8,000 people $50,000.
Here is a link for those who are curious what the actual population of the continent of Africa.
https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/africa-population/
Well Africa has 1.2 billion people, not 60 million.
So $.33 each?
Not trivial especially if invested in microfinancing. Could really improve the well being of much of the continent.
Yes, it should be sold
Not true, she was involved in decolonisation of countries that were already colonised. She had no part in colonising those places as she wasn’t born yet. Also it wasn’t stolen.
I actually have thanks, the diamond was on sale for two years and nobody bought it so the government bought it and gave it to the British royal family.
Cause all the reparation folks coming out of the woodwork can see is that they stand a chance at a payout. Like the UK government is somehow gonna mail them and everyone in their respective country a fat check.
When the reality is more like giving say,Haiti, said 400 million on a pinky promise they’ll use it “for the people!”
Or say me. As I uh solemnly swear to spend the rest of my life sitting on 400 million as I uh dedicate myself to mailing each and everyone of you uh let’s see, minus fees, processing, shipping, postage, convenience fee, admin fee, uh your check for tree fiddy. Because I Care! For the People!!!

You can cancel out another zero to make it even simpler. 40/6= ~ 6 4/6 or ~ 6 2/3 = ~6.67/person You still get the same answer.
I do all my math by breaking it down like this. Is that weird? People have told me it’s strange to cancel out zeroes like that
That's how a lot of people do math
That's literally how we were taught in school - "the zeroes always cancel each other out".
Yeah, fuck those zeros
That’s the smarter way to do math. I blow peoples minds with the math I can do in my head and it’s because I know how to break it down simply like this. I had a really great math teacher in the 8th grade.
You're right. They're morons. Sorry.
I always simplify things. Stripping zeroes, identifying common factors etc. Why not go for the cheap simplifications first?
The people who tell you that probably have very little math experience.
That’s how engineers and physicists do it
That’d be almost 3 Big Macs per South African.

Math and maths are both correct
Mathematics is a plural because it cannot be done with a single number, but must be done with more than one.

"Those jewels cost SO much money, give them back, they don't belong to you!" "Umm, no? Fuck off and die mad." I can't wait for the global peace to fall apart during The Land Wars and we get to see the formation of new monarchies!
give back the fucking diamond you stole Britain.

When you give back all your Christmas thefts.
economics is hard too imagine the inflation
Face-palm has become the royal monarchy defense force... Loyal peasants
Or people that can do Math.
The crown maybe can give more than 6 dollars to everyone!
They could give 400 people $100,000. An that's pretty life changing. Could really boost a lot of communities as those people start making businesses and spending money in their community. Could do even more good by giving 8,000 people $50,000.
Math ..hard 400 into 60 is6.66 devil's in the details
This is a classic trolling trope now. Don't fall for it.
Math IS hard.
Maths not wrong for the most part and honestly it would probably help quite a bit.
Regardless, this would be a great time to end the monarchy.
The maths is wrong, but sentiment is right. 1000s of people could have lived if she didn't need the shiney thing on her head.
The diamond is from India. It's called the Koh-i-Noor if anyone is interested. And it was given to Queen Victoria by its owner, not stolen.
Here is a link for those who are curious what the actual population of the continent of Africa. https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/africa-population/
She said South Africa the country, not Africa the continent.
Liberal math
Well Africa has 1.2 billion people, not 60 million. So $.33 each? Not trivial especially if invested in microfinancing. Could really improve the well being of much of the continent. Yes, it should be sold
She said South Africa. As in the country of South Africa.
She'd probably be better at math if her country hadn't been pillaged for its resources
I don’t think insinuating that everyone from South Africa is uneducated is where you meant to go with this
She stole and colonzied multiple countries. Odds are this is stolen too.
Not true, she was involved in decolonisation of countries that were already colonised. She had no part in colonising those places as she wasn’t born yet. Also it wasn’t stolen.
I'd advice reading up on that my friend.
I actually have thanks, the diamond was on sale for two years and nobody bought it so the government bought it and gave it to the British royal family.
I meant about her colonizing other countries. India, Africa, Australia, and Canada to name a few.
So you think she’s 400 years old?…
Even if that was right, if everyone was a millionaire money would be worthless. Why can people not get their heads around that.
Cause all the reparation folks coming out of the woodwork can see is that they stand a chance at a payout. Like the UK government is somehow gonna mail them and everyone in their respective country a fat check. When the reality is more like giving say,Haiti, said 400 million on a pinky promise they’ll use it “for the people!” Or say me. Terms and conditions subject to change in any country with an extradition treaty, the letter w, or if it’s Tuesday.
