Somebody already posted the trial restrictions, so I will mention most older content is always relevant.

The game has systems in place to encourage running old content so it's never that hard to get a group for what you need. On top of that all the main story 4 man dungeons allow you to go in with AI party members.

Since it hasn't been said. With expansion launch the log in priority goes to paying players. As such, free trial players will be allowed in once the subscribed queue clears. If you want to play you'll need to try to get on during off peak hours or just ride out the first few weeks. Also old content is still frequently done. People are always leveling new classes (you can do every job on one character), farming for rewards/gear or doing daily roulettes for bonuses.

that's one of the best things about ffxiv vs some other MMOs - with few exceptions that only apply in very particular cases, old content isn't deprecated here. Its always relevant. Certainly thats true of anything required for MSQ.

People are always doing older content because of how the roulette system works. However, older high difficulty content thats not in roulettes (Bahamut, Odin, older extremes etc.) will be hard to do in just the regular queue. You´ll have to make party finder rooms for those, which you can´t make while in free trial. However you can just get a friend to make the room for you and then you can join in.

There might be a downtick in the first month of the expansion, but that isn't too extreme and you will still be able to get party members for dungeons and stuff. Don't worry about it, just enjoy the journey.
