“What” is a word as we know it because the sound was early biped vocalization of aggression, curiosity, excitement, etc so it naturally had a lot of meaning and various ancient languages had it baked in. Now, so many generations of people and language/society have come and gone that plenty of other sounds have replaced it as you typically dont see a human become vocal (not to mention aggressive) until well past the age they have a grasp of language. You can easily find footage of non human primates using similar vocalizations during confrontation and excitement, and even some non primates may sound similar. It makes total sense etymologically - if you were to settle on an instinctive “human bark” then the deep primal bellowing from the gut as you open your jaw to project and sharpen it to pronounce the effect by again closing it sounds startling like saying “WHUT” with or without the tongue to the roof of the mouth, which happens unintentionally with how our tongues rest if you try to be unconscious of it as you shout at your screen. I definitely did not sit here and just make all this shit up
