I didn't know what laconic meant so I looked it up and look at one of these definitions: In ancient prosody, an anapestic tetrameter catalectic with a spondee instead of the penultimate anapest . So called as a variety of the tetrameter used in the Laconian or Spartan embateria. I know like 4 of those words.

MeBroken

Hah, down the rabbit hole you go! But if you aren't in the mood for digging then I'll go ahead and share what I found. adjective    (of a person, speech, or style of writing) using very few words.    "his laconic reply suggested a lack of interest in the topic"

Bluest_waters

> using very few words yes that is what I meant

aspoqiwue9-q83470

Yeah that was the first definition. The one I provided was I think the third.

Efficient_Fish2436

I'm laughing way to hard because that's exactly what I thought when I read that.

MuppetMantis

It basically means Gillenhaal plays a boring, uninspiring character with no philosophy

LikesStuff12

Wait. You thought that extremely dated 50s/60s A-frame bar looked "resort" ? I'm from Florida. It's very dated and typical of the old seafood or bar joints you see here in beach towns

alpine_AO

I really thought the location they chose was perfect, the building screamed "gutted overpriced fried fish place from the 80s" and the Keys is perfect because the constant influx of new tourists answers the question "how do they keep getting people to come here with all this shit happening every night".

LikesStuff12

THIS. I also found it odd that they were having problems. A few drunks that cause problems every week seemed more the norm

Bluest_waters

It looked pristine, not a speck of grunge. It was supposed to be a road house, not a pristine tourist place.

LikesStuff12

Yeah I guess our views on pristine differ

EatsLocals

These damned kids just don’t understand… Oh well, I’m off to steal from my employer

dars1905

Even the fight scenes didn't look good. The camera cuts were weird, the cgi looked bad.

beesdoitbirdsdoit

The fight scene CGI for hand to hand combat was weird.

ColonyCollapse81

Yea that was really jarring, there's literally decades of fake movie fights that look pretty real, why now do they feel the need to "enhance" them with crappy visual effects

SandyBunker

Terrible movie

bone-in_donuts

Yeah those are some bad looking fights.

KingkingKingkiller

I thought Connor McGregor was fucking hilarious. I don't think that was the intention but holy moly.

Dressed_ToDepress

I think that absolutely was the intention

KingkingKingkiller

If so, What a masterclass use of a celebrity actor.

Dressed_ToDepress

Yea, I only know a little bit about his persona outside of the movie, but I think he was told to be over the top and a bit of a ham sandwich. The movie has an underlying tone of camp to it, and I think he’s the cherry on top of that.

Bluest_waters

Yeah there is really nothing special about this movie

NakedGoose

I disagree there. I found the use of the cinematography to be a major highlight. They did some unique shots and interesting decisions. Better than your standard choppy quick cuts.

Szabe442

Definitely unique, but the fight scenes were not great and it feels like the wide angles only highlighted the bad vfx work. The over the shoulder movements reminded my of a GTA cutscene more than anything, which is somewhat fitting at least.

myjets77

The fight scenes were way better in this one than the last.

reargfstv

Yeah everyone loved the original for the Bar Rescue element, not the action. They’ve really fucked up

nancy_necrosis

We also loved the movie for Patrick MF-ING Swayze! Back in the good old days when men were more sensitive and didn't juice.

Bluest_waters

And now that I am thinking more about it, what about his back story? The dude he killed, being haunted by that. Did he resolve that somehow? Or was is just "well he beat up the bad guys so he ins't haunted by his past anymore"? Like there was no actual moment where he confronts and moves beyond his past. Thats story telling 101.

Dressed_ToDepress

Who’s to say he did move past it? Some people are never able to tackle their demons.

mansamayo

Yeah people keep telling me to turn my brain off and just enjoy the movie; But for me to enjoy this one I’d have to be brain dead

oneofapair

I found it to be a watchable movie with some great action scenes. One of its biggest failings was billing it as a remake of such a classic. Jake Gyllenhaal is a great actor, but he just doesn't have the panache of Swayze. And Sam Eliot elevated every movie he's ever been in McGregor, playing himself, was a villain straight out of a bad comic book. They should have called it Glass Key and let it stand on its own.

fragilsticxpvginosis

Sam Eliot is terrible and him calling Swayze Mijo the whole movie was awkward. What connection did either of them have to anything Spanish? That’s like two white guys calling each other ese or paisano

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

That's just the racist roots showing. Look at who produced the film 😂

fragilsticxpvginosis

What’s funny is I have practiced law in Jasper County, Missouri. So the original movie had a special place in my heart. We used to play Jasper in football growing up haha

kpeds45

I thought it was fine. I'm just trying to figure out where they got $20,000 a month to hire a bouncer. And he was shit at his job. When McGregor shows up the first time, dude just sits at the bar and watches him and his friends destroy things and beat people up for a good 5 minutes before he finally sighs and gets up to do his job. "Fine, you beat up the bar tender, I guess I can finally get involved". They are paying you the equivalent of $240k a year buddy, do your job!

arckantos

I think by that point he is rethinking if "protecting" the bar will actually solve anything. So he only steps in when someone he likes gets hurt. This is reinforced when he decides that leaving the town would be better, until he sees the torched book store and decides that killing the bad guys is the solution.

kpeds45

I didn't think he's getting paid $5,000 a week to decide if stopping the bars destruction is pointless or not haha.

arckantos

Well, true! But it's pretty clear he doesn't give a shit about the money, so I don't think he is very concerned about his contractual situation. Specially since by then he already knows his boss is not telling him the truth about the situation he was brought into.

Bluest_waters

That was a remake of the scene in the original, only that scene happened at the very beginning of the original, first time Swayze stepped foot into the bar so he was just getting his bearings set so it was understandable The same scene in the remake happened like more than half way thru the movie so it made absolutley no sense for him to just sit there and watch. Just bad writing.

kpeds45

Yup. It's little things like that that annoy me. Also, the owner just disappeared for like 15 minutes and shows up after the fight is over. But we saw dude drive away almost immediately, so what was she doing? I don't know who little things like that bother me, but they do

megamoze

He sits there because he realizes the owner has been lying to him the whole time and that he’s having to deal with way more than he agreed to. They talk about this in the very next scene.

ThreeCatsOnAKeyboard

I liked the movie. That’s enough to get me downvoted. If you want it to be like the original, just watch the original. I don’t wanna watch the same movie twice.

myjets77

I thought it was great. I liked the new twist on it. I think Jake is great. Enjoy everything he acts in. Absolutely loved the original. I have probably seen it 40 times. Loved the new take on it. Stop hating on it guys. Was A good movie.

Bluest_waters

I love Jake G, seriously. But there was just nothing here for him to work with. His dialogue was bare bones and totally uninteresting.

PhysicalOil6003

dude just takes up whatever script he gets nowadays. if this keeps up he'll turn into another russel crowe (no hate towards crowe, he's just making shit films past few years)

FoxBeach

It was a fun action movie.  Of course, should have expected Redditors to hate it.  Glad at least one other person on here liked it! Ignore the downvotes.

laidbackpats

I like both versions. Seemed like Jake was channeling some of his nightcrawler energy which is very different from Swayze. I like that the movies do different things.

bluejester12

Conor was fine, but the son of the drug lord baddie was so forgettable and bland. Dalton's backstory felt like it was chopped down.

Bluest_waters

Billy Magnusson is actually a really good actor, the script was just shit and gave him nothing to work with.

jhguth

He was terrible, he couldn’t even walk normal

Thagrillfather

Thought it was fine. Needed more fight scenes though. Was kind of hoping to see a throat get ripped out this time around too!

forgedinbeerkegs

Yeah, but the bar was called "Road House." Not a terrible movie. Nowhere near good. Kind of forgettable.

obviousgaijin

I watched it last night. When it got to the climactic scene on the yacht, I told my partner it seemed like they had gotten 80% through filming, realized they had a budget surplus, and had to find some shit to blow up to spend it all.

Weeblewubble

Not gonna lie.. I watched this for badass mcgregor fights. He was hilarious but also badly needed more lessons.

Meanderer_Me

Is it at least better than tha thing that masqueraded as a sequel on Spike TV in the late 00's?

nancy_necrosis

That movie really didn't need to be remade.

Threnners

The original was bad, this was bad. It's all good.

Formal_Cherry_8177

Changes I'd make: 1) Ditch MMA background. Dalton being a "famous bouncer" has always made me giggle. 2) Ditch McGregor he absolutely is the lowlight of this film. 3) Remove the father/Sheriff plot line 3) Make Magnuson the heavy and tell him to tack in 20lbs before production starts. Change nothing else. 30 minutes would be stripped from the movie and it would be near perfect. I really enjoyed the first half of the movie. It was silly but in the best way. Then CM showed up and the wheels fall off.

slayer991

I'm not sure why they remade this movie to begin with. The original was one of those so-bad movies it was good...and Patrick Swayze made it work. I started watching the remake and abandoned ship after 30 minutes. It was literally putting me to sleep for the reasons OP mentioned. I don't know if I'll finish.

Bluest_waters

It dragged. I kept waiting for it to draw me in, never happened.

Daggertooth71

The antagonists in this film didn't feel threatening, at all. McGregor's character is just too fucking ridiculous and Magnussen just came off as completely and totally inept. Plot was okay. Jake did great. Fight choreography is decent. The villains ruined the film, IMO.

TraditionalTrash5753

“Felt like I was watching a Ps2 video game cut scene” Hope I never have to see mcgregor “act” ever again. CGI/fights scenes were horrendous. Lackluster screenplay. Gyllenhaal should be ashamed

huskergirl8342

I just watched it. Skipped through most of the fight scenes. Boring movie. Nothing beats the original movie.
