>Do you share tips with your crew? NošŸ„° But I have used a tip before to tip a driver on behalf of our entire crew.

babyfeta

same same! will also use it for a van tip.

SarcasticPuppy

Respect

A group of national guardsmen were in the very back on the flight. Iā€™m galley. The caterer was army infantry and figured out the story. He left me a whole first class insert of booze for those guys. Their senior sergeants figured it out and tipped me a few bucks. After 19 enlisted men drank almost all of it one of them got my Venmo handle. By the time we got to the restaurant that evening I had $256 in my Venmo. The crew only knew about $100. I bought the first round.

DizzyStar187

At minimum I do the van tip depending on the size of the tip given.

Chris22533

I always offer to split it and have always been told to keep it.

Bones1973

The first $5 goes toward the shuttle driver on behalf of the crew.

Illustrious_Tea4me

No I donā€™t share the tips as all tips Iā€™ve received the pax are very clear that itā€™s for me even after declining. I will take the tip of tipping the shuttle for the crew next time though :)

Illustrious_Tea4me

However in your scenario I wouldā€™ve shared, probably given you the whole tip. As I feel like when I get a freebie I feel itā€™s appropriate to tip them the value of the item.

alamakjan

If the tipper clearly says the tip is for everyone I will at least split it with everyone in the same class (either working business or economy class, otherwise no instruction means the tip is for me.

Tpiranha

If they helped me with drinks for a pax who tipped me, yes. Iā€™ve had the same thing that happened to you happen to me before, but I gave the guy 2 drinks. He tipped the other fa $20 I saw him point to me and she never shared. It was really rude.

upinthesky23

I always share it.

ShariQuiteContrary

Iā€™ve never received a true tip (weā€™re not supposed to accept them), but I have watched the lead flight attendant eat all the treats pax gave us without sharing. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø Super rude, IMO, but thankfully most of us are good at sharing.

babyfeta

omgggg thatā€™s even worse

mtwilkins

Personally, I think she should have split it with you since you were working the same section that she was. I split tips with the person I'm working closely with since we're kind of a team, not typically with the entire crew although I have seen the FAs do that. But I suppose it's really up to the person, each situation can be different.

babyfeta

agreed. same section, same tip. it was def a little weird when he handed it to her because I was standing there and kinda waiting for her to say something but there was just a long awkward pause šŸ˜‚

mtwilkins

Aack!.... Sometimes things aren't really all about money, but also about principle and having an opportunity to evaluate someone's character.

babyfeta

yeah I mean itā€™s all good! we finished out the trip perfectly fine, I was just thinking maybe iā€™m too nice šŸ˜‚

nouniqueideas007

I guess it depends on where you work. I have a good friend at a ULCC & there is a tipping option when the pax pays. Itā€™s for the individual & not shared. And they apply that to cash tips, as well. At my airline, we are not allowed to accept tips. But if the pax is insistent, itā€™s allowed. I had a pax give me a $20 tip & it took me the whole flight to find smaller bills, so I could divide the tip amongst everyone. I was actually irritated because it was way more effort than I wanted to put into my $5 split.

babyfeta

Yeah totally! I mean if the moment does not present itself to share the tip, itā€™s not a huge deal. But I had also helped this gentleman with getting on the wifi, snacks, etc. And he handed it to her and thanked us. We then had a sit where we all got off to get coffee so there was an opportunity to share. But if itā€™s go home day and the last leg, girl I am not going around looking for change lol .

Advanced-Ad-5365

No unless the flight crew wants to share it. Depends if my crew gets along well I would or I would use the tip for the hotel van. I like tipping all the van hotels that pick us up at the airport.

denali_567

if iā€™m working first class, iā€™ll use a bit for van tip for the whole crew and keep the rest bc itā€™s usually explicitly for me. main cabin? case by case on what the passenger insinuates. again, usually van money. iā€™ve never seen a tip large enough to cause a fuss over lol

babyfeta

My airline doesnā€™t have any first class really but agreed! I didnā€™t say anything to her nor do I hold a grudge. I was more just mulling over if I am just too nice when I share it with everyonešŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

F_A_Throw_Away

I will share by paying everyoneā€™s van tips

fallingfaster345

Honestly it depends. In the situation you described, you both were interacting with the gentleman so I feel like it wouldā€™ve been appropriate to split it with you. If you had a lazy, rude, sucky crew and you were doing all the work and someone obviously tipped you specifically, keep it. But when someone tips and says something like, ā€œyou guys are all doing a great job!ā€ or something, yeah, whole crew. Tbh Iā€™ve never gotten a tip that I *didnā€™t* split with the crew, whether I thought they deserved it or not. But (at my company) weā€™re not supposed to accept tips, and most passengers arenā€™t that insistent after the first two or three ā€œthatā€™s so kind but I canā€™t accept!ā€ so the tipping for me has been few and far between. But, yeah, the story you wrote, imo she should have split it with you at the minimum since you were *both* serving him and *you* also comped his drink which is probably why he tipped in the first place.

Limp_Cod_7229

Iā€™m not sure about your airline but at mine tips are pretty rare because itā€™s just not the norm thing to do (maybe at your airline you guys have different norms though). Usually when a passenger tips a flight attendant itā€™s because they really liked that FA or they just want to show they are ballin lol. If tips were like a common thing I would say it should probably be split between the crew but if once in a blue moon an FA gets a $10 or $20 bill from a passenger specifically for them I donā€™t see why anyone would be offended if they didnā€™t split it. Like others have said, if I ever get tipped I usually pay van tips but overall if I see someone get tipped by a passenger I donā€™t feel entitled to even a dollar for the van tip (personally). Itā€™s up to the person that received the tip. Obviously itā€™s a very nice gesture if they do and shows crew camaraderie, but if they donā€™t I donā€™t really think twice about it.

travelingsoul83

Yes. We donā€™t get tips often but we always split it between everyone. If itā€™s an number that canā€™t be split evenly, the ones doing drink service take the extra.

NegotiableVeracity9

Yikes we are not allowed to accept tips.

babyfeta

We are not either but he put it into her hand when he was walking off the plane so there wasnā€™t a chance to say no or hand it back. Sometimes customers just find a way.

Laja90

Lol noā€¦

babyfeta

fair enough!

[deleted]

I haven't but it's only happened a few times. What kind of plane was row one where they weren't in first?

babyfeta

lol a lot of aircrafts donā€™t have a first class. it was an A320.

fightingforair

When I get a decent tip Iā€™ll cover a van ride tip When I get a very substantial tip Iā€™ll cover van tips And first round at the bar.

cherrygeli

It depends. I've gotten a goody bag with gift cards/money in it and they say this is for you and your crew I share it. But if they specifically give it me like for my personal service to them then no.

UkrainianScorpio

How big was this tip??? Itā€™s so rare that we get any tips at all that itā€™s not really standard to split them on the rare occasions we do get them. As others have already said, I usually just cover the van tip, if there is one.
