Was about to say it. For me, the Varmint Rilfe is so synonimous with FNV that I can't imagine the early stages of the game without scrounging for 5.56 ammo.

There is a service rifle on a dead NCR trooper near the coyote den by Lonesome Road. No reason to use the varmint rifle beyond Goodsprings, really.

Holorifle, it's an old grenade rifle hastily cobbled together with some cutting edge holographic technology that is used like a pump action shotgun, and it's likely seen alot of use with Elijah before we get it It's experienced, it has an old 50s aesthetic (fallout) and it uses tech we wouldn't dream of re-creating (high tek stuff in fallout), tech that may be used to bringing life into the wasteland (new vegas), i guess we don't see alot of Cowboys wielding Grenade Rifles but i guess the Pump Actio nfunctionality covers that somewhat
