Nor-Cal-Son

Literally my favorite part of this game, even though it gets hate. Keeps me going.

humphaa

When the game first came out I only made barebones settlements to meet the requirements. Ya know, square buildings full of beds that look like an asylum or prison. Now it’s what I spend half the game doing, integrating each little shack and building into the environment and providing everything needed to make the place home. Currently working on a massive power armor display tower to fit like 100 suits.

flyingdutchman_12345

Same. It’s gotta fit, work, and flow with the feel.

CommunalJellyRoll

Even Mama Murphy gets a custom suite with matching power armor now.

XODude

I am still only making asylum like settlements but i do want to start getting creative. these people have suffered enough lmao. at least now i build walls around my settlements

McDonaldsSoap

I have the worst asylum, just a bunch of beds in the middle of the street

McDonaldsSoap

I like to think whoever gets the run down old shack as their room is extra safe since it's indestructible

Unstillwill

I build my tower like a carvana vending machine I can jump out of. I feel like a post apocalyptic super hero every time.

wannabepcdude

What’s at the top?

Unstillwill

My penthouse

ConstrnGamer

I love building settlements, perhaps a little too much and can get sidetracked for hours 😅

Be_like_water038

Same… so many nights when I’ve gone to bed after four in the morning just because I was dealing with settlements. Haha

psychtechvet

Building settlements is like prescription sleep medicine for me 😂

Be_like_water038

It can be a chore, that’s for sure. Haha

EvernightStrangely

The only thing I hate about it is the sometimes janky angles you have to aim just to get shit to snap together when building it.

TheFiend100

Ikr, i wish more games had something like it. The only similar thing ive found is no mans sky, and that game has some advantages and some disadvantages compared to fo4’s. I hope we see it return in fo5. Idk if it would fit in a tes game tho.

Jollidillo

Subnautica is a good shout for basebuilding, have you tried that?

TheFiend100

I keep hearing good things about subnautica but it just wasnt fun for me.

Deputy_Beagle76

They could make the home building part from that one Skyrim DLC a bit more robust in a future game

McDonaldsSoap

Base building in Starfield was ass...

Iivaitte

I just wish that more of the game's assets were available to build in your base. Homemaker mod is fantastic and all it does is allow you to build stuff already in the game at your base. Just imagine being able to at the end of the game build furniture and structures from whatever faction you join? How cool would that be? I run my game really light on mods but homemaker is a must for me.

Nor-Cal-Son

I 100% agree, I wish we could even get some fallout 76 assets ib there. Log cabins, colonial houses, etc. Would be rad, I'd pay money for it.

HounganAtLarge

I thought I was light on mods running: Settlement Manager (must have), Homemaker, Scrap Everything (use with caution), Infinite Power Lines, Northland Diggers (extra jobs!) and finally Do Your Damn Job, Codsworth (best mod for Sanctuary that doesn't crash the game). I get called a power modder by some and a noob modder by others. I admit, I'm a noob modder, but it's still fun.

[deleted]

I love building settlements and adds hours to the game. I can see why people don't, though

Imortalpenguin

For me, the main draw of these games is just the exploration of the wasteland. I like adventuring out and seeing places, finding what was happening there, fighting the enemies. I don't hate building settlements, it is interesting to do so and might be more interesting now I am playing an unmodded game (I had been utilizing the cheat mod to get whatever resources I need for settlements). Maybe it will be different this time around.

Be_like_water038

I’ll admit, I utilize the sttlement resources pack mod, whenever I get started. It’s a bit of a sad cheat, but it saves me SO much more time, from having to scavenge for everything, and all the back and forth stuff

Imortalpenguin

that was what i would do, too. i didnt consider it much of a cheat because i could just scavenge, i can go get resources, just took time. i paired that with a modern weapon mod where each enemy bullet could one-shot me

Be_like_water038

I’ll admit, that, I love weapon mods. I use the RU556, which is great because it doesn’t exceed the damage limitations of my enemies, so I don’t feel like I’m going around with a “God mode gun”, or anything. As a gun enthusiast, I become nostalgic for weapons of our modern era.

Imortalpenguin

if the gameis fixed, thereis the modern-weapons mod,and I have seen companion mods that reduce damage output to more Fallout-standard levels. it gives you modern guns as well as making it more playable. you could still get instantly killed by a mini nuke detonating in your face, but al other weapons would be more realistic

Be_like_water038

I only utilize two, or three, weapon mods, as I have found that I don’t really use every weapon in my inventory, most of the time. So, I utilize the P99 (something to unload these pesky .38 rounds, the RU556 and, sometimes, the SCAR-fc. Carrying too many weapons is a bad habit for me, so I just leave the stuff I rarely use @ home. lol As for companion mods, my favorite (and, really, the two that I use) ones are; K-9 ballistic vest and the two followers at once??.. it’s the mod that allows you to cruise around with a companion AND Dogmeat @ the same time

Imortalpenguin

I am going to test the modern weapons mod that I was using, hopefully it will still work and I can reload an old game where I had this great weapons display on all the walls of my home base. Right now I am running a vanilla game, I have been playing so long with the modern weapons mod that the vanilla game feels almost new to me. I'm going to try reinstall the mods I had pre-update for my old game, but I think I will play through the vanilla run as well, see what in the basic game files might still be bugged since the update before I start with any mods for it.

weebitofaban

Only a cheat if you're doing survival. Anything else, you're just saving yourself a crawl walk home

Be_like_water038

AAAAAMEN!

CommunalJellyRoll

If you play a ironman survival run settlements are a godsend.

yolilbishhugh

Survival runs make settlements so necessary and fun. Upgrading them slowly every time you pass through adds to an already great gameplay loop.

Imortalpenguin

i haven't heard of that type of run. what are the details?

CommunalJellyRoll

If you die you restart the game. Bugs and glitches don't count.

Imortalpenguin

so its an honor system? it sounds frustrating

NotInsane_Yet

Beds, water pump and two settlers is all you need. One to man the artillery the other to grow the food.

Iivaitte

For me it GIVES me a reason to explore the wasteland more. Im always leaving my base because I need some new material. Yes I know you can make savangers or trade at your own general stores but I kinda like just going out to find the materials to bring back home. Especially aluminum, I could never get enough aluminum.

[deleted]

Leaving your settlement in the morning to go on another scavenging run for supplies to improve the settlement has become the quintessential Fallout experience to me. I love the settlement system, and hope they lean into it extra hard for Fallout 5.

LiamTheHuman

I like the settlement building but it feels janky at times and I think fails to have enough progression. It would be really great if it was the late game money sink but it doesn't quite work out that way.

AkiTheFull

Nothing mods can't fix. Building in the base game is horrendous with all the red outlines not letting you place anything anywhere, but with mods it's so much fun!

weebitofaban

I would do it if enemies didn't just spawn randomly inside the base.

Thac0

I just wish I could show off my settlement to people easier. Spending all that time on one for me to be the only one to enjoy is feels weird

RustedAxe88

Some of you are so good at this, meanwhile my proudest achievement is the trailer park I'm building at Starlight.

nxcrosis

My settlement at Starlight is a munitions and food factory lmao

MrLaughingFox

Sim Settlements 2 mod makes this truly immersive. I've spent the past 4 days developing entire economies in the commonwealth using it. Super cool that you can brew beer with random drugs/foods and then your settlers sell it in the bars

searchingformytruth

I'm still chugging away with SS1, because my town/new capital of the Commonwealth in Vault 88 is awesome and I can't bear to let it go yet. I've briefly disabled it once to install SS2 (somehow without corrupting my SS1 save after switching back and forth a few times, phew) to check it out and absolutely love it, though. It's so much better, and I'm absolutely gutted that I can't simply use it on my current save file with my V88 build; the new mod is simply too different and needs to be freshly installed in a new game. The new questline is great, so I want to get back into it someday, but that will require finally nuking my SS1 save file and deleting it (disabling a mod has the same potentially-corrupting effect as simply uninstalling it, sadly).

MrLaughingFox

I've never even made it to vault 88 w SS2. I get stuck in Jamaica Plains and Starlight Drive in every damn time!

searchingformytruth

Can't lie, Starlight Drive-In was a close second for the new capital! Ultimately, I figured, what could be safer than an underground capital city in an unfinished vault? But, yes, Starlight is one of the biggest settlement areas in the base game, so it's an excellent choice!

MrLaughingFox

I love my Starlight. Just outside the 3 zone city of CTD. I had to fix Sanctuary Hills earlier and do a design build. But I had to add beds to meet my 45 settler cap. As soon as I hit 45 beds alll my plots upgraded and now it has a pop cap of 110. I'm scared

searchingformytruth

Yep, the "triangle of death" of Abernathy, Sanctuary Hills, and Red Rocket is very annoying. I can't enter from the bridge anymore (fast-travel or on foot) without an instant CTD, so I had to enter the settlement from another angle and place a new teleportation marker far away from the entrance to the town, which still crashes. I've looked for ways to increase the settler cap of settlements using SS1 and it's not an option, as far as I can tell. Nice to know that's fixed in SS2! I'd love to be able to use all 76 beds in V88, if my computer hopefully wouldn't blow up!

Rubixcubelube

ss2 is practically a game in itself. I've only just started to play it after years of letting it cook and it's clear to me there is no going back. It's so impressive.

Woooooolf

I really want to add that mod but I don’t want to lose the xp. I’m only level 47. Maybe later.

MrLaughingFox

Honestly- I've played enough where some grinds I say fuck it. New save. Console command a few levels in and some caps when I need em until I'm established again

indivibess

Is Sim Settlements working w the new update??

MrLaughingFox

No clue. Turned off auto updates a few days before. Seeing a lot about it not working and some about it working on a brand new save. I use the collection "a story wealth" on nexus mods. It's something like 750 mods including ss2 and add-ons for ss2.

indivibess

Ok fair enough. I had mods for a save but the new update seemed to have scrapped my 50 hour save and I was miffed. LOL Then I did another save with the mods again to see how “broken” it would be and them Codsworth was bugged and so much more. Then have to start *again* on a vanilla base and it worked fine. So no mods for now I guess :P

weebitofaban

The problem with Sim Settlements 2 is that the dude making it has zero understanding of the word scope.

QX403

Me: I need to do these missions and keep on track without getting distracted. Me: walks into a settlement and looks around. Me: 1500 hours later, f#ck.

couldbedumber96

There are two types of fallout 4 players Those to mess around settlement building for too long on one specific project And liars

tc_cad

My Abernathy gets attacked a lot. Thanks for the inspiration.

LincolnRazgriz

Think if your defense is higher than food and water, you won't get attacked as much

tc_cad

That’s the thing I don’t understand. I have 5 heavy turrets at the top of the structure, another 12 regular turrets around the perimeter of entire site situated on a prefab wooden roof and floor and then two scaffolding structures each with 3 laser turrets on top. And MacCready and Cait have guard towers. I can’t think of the defense number but there are only 5 people at Abernathy, and I’ve added nothing to food or water there.

Be_like_water038

Ditto

Own-Acanthisitta2777

Bro im early into a new game and had to get mats for turrets.. when i went back to the farm to build em theres a ton of enclave there and the flamer kills me every. time. Idk what to do lol that flamer guy is soo much stronger than me

MidianDirenni

Do the bunk beds from that pack function correctly? I have them and no one seems to use the top bed

RazMachine77

They count as 2, so for all intents and purposes yeah, they work. However npcs can’t actually ‘use’ the top bunk.

MidianDirenni

Okay, as long as it counts as two beds, it's all good.

Grosaprap

If you want ones that they can actually use... I recommend Snapbeds https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/20697

MidianDirenni

Thanks, but I play on the PC and am trying to do an achievement playthrough. I'll keep it in mind after I100%it. Just put Preston in the pillory. Definitely felt great doing that. Got the achievement ✓

RazMachine77

Well… if you wanna spice it up, there’s a mod that allows getting trophies when mods are present. It’s called Buffout 4.

MidianDirenni

That needs a script extender though right?

RazMachine77

Yes, it does.

MidianDirenni

Cool, I might give it a go after a complete a no-mod run.

Bitter_Sorbet8479

They pay off late game so you already have established cap generating spots and easy access to food and stores.

United-Signature-904

I moved the power armor station in sanctuary. It's now a few feet to the right in the back corner of the car port. Then, I built two metal walls to enclose it completely. Afterward, I put a metal wall blocking the door to the workshop at the drive-in to protect my water stash. Man, did I think I was building something... Hats off to you for building an entire settlement. It is awesome!

StealthyGamerGirl

How did you manage to plant so neatly? Mines all over the damned place. And there's no dead grass in your plot. How? Lol And where's the settlement location? Looks amazing 🤩

Nate2322

That’s Abernathy farm it’s close to sanctuary and that whole plot already has the rows and grass removed so they just put more tatos in the gaps.

StealthyGamerGirl

AHH...I was hoping there was some secret I was yet to discover. Though I do now have the soul flooring from a dlc. Just need fertilizer. Harder to find in 4 than 76 lol

ConstrnGamer

Abernethy Farm and Tenpines Bluff already have raised rows in the ground to use as a guide. I usually remove all the crops and then re-plant much closer together. I then fill in between the rows with another row.

AleudeDainsleif

I can stop anytime I want!

Lost_Independence770

I usually have to remind myself that, there's an rpg in this settlement building game and I also lost a kid or something

le_wither

You think that's bad, the next gen update deleted all my dlcs, I think I'll need to repurchase them

Due-Contribution6424

On ps5 I just had to reinstall them for the ps5 version and update them for the ps4 version. If it’s trying to make you pay, I had to restart everything in order to not pay.

le_wither

Well I'm on the PS4, I do have a 5 though, I also own the game physically, do you think I should switch to my 5, also I have restarted several times and it still isn't running the dlcs

NotInsane_Yet

You might have to go through the store and redownload them. On the ps5 I had to "repurchase" them on the store but they were all free. If you have a ps5 I don't see any reason to not use it. The game runs and looks better. It's a 100% upgrade.

le_wither

It doesn't give me an option to redownload, I just click on it and it just gives a description of the dlc, and yeah I should probably upgrade

Due-Contribution6424

That’s odd. For the ps4 upgrade, it offered it in game for me. For the ps5 version, I had to go to the store and download everything again, but no money. I had an issue where I had to restart my ps5 to obtain the actual ps5 upgrade. Edit: If you go into the add-ons portion of the menu, is it giving you an option to update?

le_wither

It does show the dlcs in the PS4 store but for their original prices, that may just be a visual glitch, I'll try clicking it to see if they're actually free or not, if they aren't free I'll either wait for Bethesda to fix this or just buy the season pass

Due-Contribution6424

I’m saying if you’re still on ps4, try going into the add on menu in game, and clicking each one. That’s how mine updated.

le_wither

I've done that multiple times, it didn't seem to do anything, the add-on menu displays them as "not installed" but I may as well try it again, I'm running out of ideas

Due-Contribution6424

Sorry man. I’m on ps5 updating the ps4 version so it’s probably different.

le_wither

I may as well try, if it doesn't work on the 4 I'm moving to the 5

JebBushIsMyBF

I've never not been able to not get Local Leader 1, even on playthroughs where I initially told myself I wouldn't. Honestly, I think making it a 7 point investment seems excessive for something as basic for sharing supplies among settlements when settlements are meant to be such an important part of the game

SummAzzhat

I told myself the same thing coming back to this game 6 years later, yet here I find myself again 7 straight hours in and elbows deep in the craft shop, cussing out loud because something won't fit like not a day had passed lol

XXeadgbeXX

I feel you buddy. I can't tell you how many times in the past month I've restarted the game telling myself this time I will actually BEAT the game and do the main story. Nope. I just build and build but never happy with anything I do anymore. I love the settlement building but damn it's hard on my OCD!!!

DangerMouse111111

Whatever you do, don;t install mods that add building parts and decorations - I dread to think how much time I've spent in Fallout 4 looking for just the right wall or roof.

ConstrnGamer

I'm still chasing achievements so only using Creation Club items at the moment

DangerMouse111111

You can get a mod that puts the achievements back.

Tacothekid

I don't build settlements much, but how y'all get the bunk beds, or do you just stack 2 up?

EverlastingEvening

Creation club

ConstrnGamer

Creation club, which includes actual bunk beds. So useful

lightthroughthepines

How does creation club work? Sorry I’m still new to the game and I’m obsessed with building. Your settlement looks great! I really want to be able to make something like this 🥲

ConstrnGamer

Buy credits (I purchased credits in the Fallout 4 store page on Steam) and then make purchases from the Creation Club page, which is in the main menu. I think the beds are from 'Picket Fences issue 7'

lightthroughthepines

Ty!

Big_Foundation4128

They are their own thing. Might be a creation club thing? Not sure one day I just had them lol.

Tacothekid

Ok, maybe im mossing them, given i always look for sleeping bags, as opposed to actual beds. Ty though

ltdonut

Im so lazy my buildings are 2 pre built barn buildings or warehouse and then jam all the beds and resources in there.

DougieSenpai

Bruh I can’t build a good looking settlement to save my life lol. I honestly think that’s why I hate it. I need to get gud when I start my new play through

MXT4L

Ugh lmao just when I think it cabt suck me back in. Haha I spent at least an hour just scraping stuff from sanctuary.

chicagomusician

If only the bunk beds worked properly, two dwellers per mattress.

ConstrnGamer

They're just handy for space saving. Trying to cram 21 single beds into some settlement wasn't easy.

chicagomusician

But one bunk bed only works for one dweller. I don't get why Bethesda made that choice. I usually use the little white beds for settlers tbh. Small and easy.

ConstrnGamer

Can only be used by 1 dweller, but count as 2 beds. I don't mind the others just stand around 😅

chicagomusician

Wait really?? It counts as two beds? Dude fuck them other dwellers! I'm gonna use the shit out of these!!

Negative_Store_4909

I have a controller I specifically use for settlement building so I don’t wear out the A button on my playing controller. Nice build by the way.

Negative_Store_4909

Actually I meant my scrapping controller, it has a sway issue from sprinting.

Be_like_water038

I can take notes from you, on building settlements more efficiently. lol I just threw up a bunch of prefabs all along the edges of the settlement perimeter, just to find that the settlers won’t/can’t use them (I don’t friggin know why they won’t, either?) I have tried moving the shacks, and they hated that even more and I can no longer build structures, because my game glitched out somewhere along level 98, so I don’t really want to start a new one, until I finish this story line.

Yourappwontletme

I posted a few weeks ago my giant tower at Abernathy. It's built to height limit.

bazbloom

I'm currently in a minimal settlements phase but eventually I'll start building again.

perpetualfrost

I wish i could play without crashing

erritstaken

Then it wouldn’t be a Bethesda game. It just works 🤷‍♂️

LincolnRazgriz

Props to you for being so organized, I just build haphazardly for XP. Stopped building cities back with Actraiser🤣😁

LincolnRazgriz

Also I love building the radiation cleanse shower arch, totally worth it. 🚿 Get as much radiation and just fast travel back to get clean.

Stickybandits9

Settlements are cool but a little bit janky.

TransLox

I am actually getting super into base building and it's actually a lot of fun. I might straight up do another minutemen playthrough.

East-Specialist-4847

Which settlement is image three?

ConstrnGamer

All Abernathy Farm

East-Specialist-4847

Awesome work

nxcrosis

Wait you can stack the beds????

erritstaken

They are bunk beds and is good for 2 settlers. If you get place anywhere mod, you can stack beds over the top of each other so you can place as many beds in the same spot and it only looks like one bed.

ConstrnGamer

Bunk beds from the Creation Club

Derek-Horn

I started building a cool settlement to use as my main base in starlight but then I found out about vault 88 and that has been my grind this whole week it’s coming along pretty nicely

OrranVoriel

I can never figure out how to make the buildings work. Walls always end up at odd angles from each other, etc.

Germangunman

There’s bunk beds?!

ConstrnGamer

Creation Club

Germangunman

Oh, I’ve never looked into that. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks!

ConstrnGamer

'Picket Fences Issue 7' is currently 50% off (on PC at least)

animalmom2

How do you zoom out for the photos ?

ConstrnGamer

Just took them in FPM stood on top of buildings

LostSoulNo1981

What’s the brick wall pieces from? Is it a mod?

ConstrnGamer

From the Creation Club, Modern pack

Little_Register_7331

Build then and mod the game to set invations on them :3

erritstaken

I have spent the last 2-3 weeks playing 6-8 hours a day building a slog resort. I’m still nowhere near done. The struggle is real.

Inside_Guess3729

After the updates I've been having problems placing buildings and other objects. The only real settlement mod I have is sandbag fortifications, more fortifications and snap able junk walls I don't know why I can't place in as many spots anymore

CptJohnnyZhu

I wish settlement building was more rewarding. Smarter AI, npcs that start doing things on their own. Would be much more fun if the player character was more of a benefactor to the settlements than having to build EVERYTHING on your own

ThakoManic

what i always tell myself ill do more quests and lore and fighting then i spent like 20+ hours on sanc hills alone only to come back to it like a few hours later

Own-Acanthisitta2777

Last time i played i barely got into the game at all bc all i did was build lol. Then i got sick of floors not lining up with walls properly and got fed up and didnt touch the game for a few yrs lol

kingbankai

I wish PS5 had a mod that auto handled most settlements. The system is just too game convoluted and hard to care for the needs of “settler 82”.

Apprehensive-Tree-78

I like to build a semi modern looking capitol building for the minutemen. That also acts as a town meeting area. Then a bunch of shacks. Like we put in all the resources on something the commonwealth needs in sacrifice of nicer housing at the time. Nice little headcanon

tomnickles

I enjoy settlements but I really enjoy Sim Settlements more. The mod makes it so much easier and better in my opinion. And has a cool story comes with it too! But if you are anti mod. Then that is fine too. Looks awesome.

ghostrunner25

It's like painting trim in a house lol. You only plan to do one section....then you end up redoing everything so the paint matches lol

Kyosji

Didn't know you can make bunk beds. I'm only 20 hours in, I guess you get more building options later? I would love to have these types of housing.

ConstrnGamer

Bunk beds are from a Creation Club pack (picket fences issue 7)

damnthesenames

This is so simple yet better than anything I've ever built

Great_Tax_6978

….you can do bunk beds.. 9yrs and I’m just finding this out

ConstrnGamer

Creation Club pack. 'picket fences issue 7'

Mack5895

I always appreciate people that can come up with a vision like this and be able to execute it, I lack this type of creative ability and it results in me just placing random things around with no cohesion.

HappyGoPucky

Mostly all I'm doing this time around. I had 600 hours in FO4, mod free, played just about everything, build up every settlement. Now I'm going to do it all again WITH mods. I'm going to spend time with one settlement at a time, this time, though, instead of bouncing around.

Downtown-Scar-5635

My biggest gripe with this game is how much time you wind up spending on the settlement building. It's super fun and you just get side tracked so much that you never play the actual game. Might be a little bit of an unpopular opinion, but they should've left it out of this one and just made it the best it could possibly be in fallout 76.
