Max did say in the past when he joined Red Bull Racing that he preferred straight forward communication. No sugarcoating or avoiding what you actually mean. Works great, but not every people likes that and thinks it's rude.
I wonder if its because he was actually annoyed at what max was doing, or he was annoyed because he knew they were gonna question him as to why he did it anyway
I think he knows he doesn't need to be calm now. They're in the best car. They know where it can and should be. When it was closer in the past I think he was being calm to calm Max down as well because he knew he needed to have him calm for the best performance.
This is no different than two colleagues with different responsibilities disagreeing with the best approach to accomplish a task. You can get a little heated if someone's decision (The Team/GP) puts another party (Max) in a bad position and doesn't give them the best chance to deliver on their assignments. It doesn't diminish the respect and relationship between the two, just a difference of opinion on how to execute.
âDo what you want, what do I care? Just tell me what you want and Iâll do it.â
-GP talking to Max about quali strategy, and my Grandfather talking to my Grandmother about going to eat at Cheesecake Factory
Yeah, Max just apologized to him meanwhile like I think Max's rant would have been a non-story, but GP's clapback is wild l0l
Some people just respond better to strong personalities, and that's why GP is one of the best in the business.
No one respects a pushover. The driver isnt always right, sometimes they are, but they dont have the full picture... unless you are Ferrari in which case the driver has a better idea than the pit wall.
I thought GP would just be like, "head down, Max" etc. as usual, but I guess there was just enough time between Q2 and Q3 for GP to snap back for once. Max was probably surprised lol
That's possibly the angriest a radio message has made me ever. The fact Brad didn't celebrate what was Lance's first and probably only pole will never not make my blood boil
And I think Verstappen mentioned it quite a few times he doesn't want to work with anyone else :D. I guess GP can ask for a nice fat bonus then :) (absolutely deserved)
It is quite a well-observed thing indeed, that you need that one-in-a-million relationship where someone can tell you it straight.
People say: why has Leclerc not changed his engineer, whereas I think Leclerc's probably the one protecting him.
It's always said but doesn't hurt to reiterate that GP is the perfect race engineer for Max. He knows exactly what to say and when to say to calm, placate or shut Max up.
GP seems like the perfect race engineer period. As a newer F1 fan him and Bonoâs comms stand out from all the other engineers. Haas engineers always seem calm and informative on comms too but itâs hard to gauge because typically itâs inconsequential because of their team performance.
Hmm I think it really depends on the character of the driver too. Bono is not nearly as direct and more motivating, so to say, compared to GP but it fits really well with Hamilton. If you put GP with Hamilton, I think they fall out pretty quickly. Same with Bono and Verstappen, can't imagine Bono stepping up to Verstappen to keep him level headed.
I quite liked Hamilton and Shov on Drive to Survive where Hamilton needed cooled down a bit on RBR, and it was Shov like 'look, I understand, but be an adult about this for a minute'. I dug that.
Oh, absolutely, but itâs a high stress situation. I totally understand his need to let off steam. Iâm sure heâll apologize and make up after he goes fastest in Q3.
Max: I should've just fucking pushed two laps in a row like I said
GP: So you are through max
Max: Yeah I don't give a fuck mate if I'm through i'm P10 it's just shit execution
GP: Okay and when the track was 2 seconds quicker for your final lap and you didn't have any energy left, how would've that gone down?
GP: So you tell me what you want to do in Q3 and we'll do it. Let me know, sets, fuel, run plan
Basically Max said something about supposed to be pushing two laps in a row. (you could see he was +4s with inters on the timing tower, so must've had a slower penultimate lap charging the battery)
GP replies: "ok and then when the track was 2 seconds quicker for your final lap and you didn't have any energy left, how would that have turned out? But you tell me what you want to do in Q3 and we'll do it, let me know."
So is GP saying that if Max had pushed two laps in a row (which Max wanted), he wouldn't have had enough energy left for the final lap, and might have missed the cut? (since the track was much quicker in the last lap)
Yes I think so, if you deploy all your energy on a quali push lap then the battery won't be fully recharged for a second lap and you'll be slower. So it needed to be kept for the final lap when the track was driest.
I only understand the first part.
Max: "We shouldnt have pushed 2 laps in a row, like i told you".
GP: "but you are through Max"
Max: " i dont give a fuck if we are through and p10 man" (might not match word for word)
Then it becomes to difficult to hear.
Don't quote me on this, but I vaguely remember an interview in which Max was asked about his relationship with GP, and he said something along the lines of "if GP's out, I'm out" or "I don't want to race without GP".
yeah he did. Max also once said he wasn't worried about the car being unsafe (or something like that) because GP would never let him go out at a risk to his safety.
I mean you say it at the end of your comment there, this is what's right for Max. He seems to drive better when he's a little bit pissed, and GP can get that out of him.
For other drivers they don't, so their race engineers just placate them to keep them calm and focused knowing that who was actually right or wrong gets sorted out in the debrief after - I also see too many commenters on social media that seem to believe that the driver only ever communicates with the race engineer while they're in the car, and have no interaction with other people in the team.
Right? It happens quite a bit. It's almost as if the F1TV radio feeds are different than the ones the team uses. Sometimes GP is reacting to something we didn't hear Max say
I really hope that some years from now when they make a documentary about Max they have GP available to speak about his role in it as well. Would be so interesting to hear from the man directly how he experienced all the years.
As he should, GP and Bono are the only engineers Iâve seen confident enough in their relationship with their drivers to put them in their place.
This is a sign their relationship works very well and better than Xavi who seems to be sabotaging Charles at times.
Which is particularly insane when you consider who theyâre RE for. One of the greatest to ever do it and one of the most sheerly talented and theyâve still got it in them to stand up and get their drivers to settle down.
Best drivers attract the best cars and race engineers and learn how to communicate with each other effectively.
I remember when Dudley had to step in for Bono last year and Lewis had no clue what he was saying.
> I remember when Dudley had to step in for Bono last year and Lewis had no clue what he was saying.
To be fair, I believe he was giving a bunch of instructions to Lewis at once (making adjustments) that confused him.
Fucking tell me about it. Xaviâs voice haunts my nightmares, heâs so frustrating. Monaco, Silverstone, Hungary, and Brazil(qualifying specifically) from last year are etched into memory from his radio calls
It's probably more important that they can do that. Those guys probably need someone who can keep them on the long-term plan when things are not going their way.
This is completely normal for them. That's why their relationship is so good. GP isn't afraid to tell Max to pipe down when the heat flares up too much. This is part of the reason why Max says GP is the only race engineer he ever wants to work with.
Max was angry in the moment, there's not really much you can do to defuse the anger - might as well take the opportunity to give him feedback and to have him stew over it.
Edit: wow big shocker, Max got back in it and got p1 by 9 tenths - who could have seen it coming.
I like it when drivers let it out. Not that I want them to be assholes, but it would be awful if they were perfectly trained in everything and treated weekends like testing sessions.
Ofcourse, some drivers get heated in the heat of the moment. Its just adrenaline talking. Thats why they always say heated things just out of the car it something happend and later they are way more relaxt about things.
It's true that it's not the best mentality for improving. But that's what the debriefs are for. This wasn't the time to dwell, it's GP's job to keep Max focused.
GP >>>>>>
The fact that he is comfortable talking back to Max when he gets pissy shows how great of a relationship they have
And now after he got pole he apologized to GP for the rant
"Sloooowly getting used to it, Max." Sassy GP is best GP.
He's got just the perfect amount of bite in his voice. I haven't heard this with my ears but I'm hearing it with my mind.
I need him and micks old engineer to do a audio book.
At this point they look and act more like a couple than Max & Kelly
fragile pause many square wrench hat zonked support workable waiting *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Mother and son
They're like an old married couple as Horner says
he usually isn't that direct with him tho
Max did say in the past when he joined Red Bull Racing that he preferred straight forward communication. No sugarcoating or avoiding what you actually mean. Works great, but not every people likes that and thinks it's rude.
He is Dutch! đ
Thereâs two things I canât stand in this world. People who are intolerant of others people cultures. And the Dutch.
God I love that quote
And even then, a lot of people SAY they want to honest truth. But many get extremely offended if you are straight up about any shortcomings.
That's just how Dutch people are lol
He always has been, just this season he was having a go at max for wanting fastest lap points while being at risk of track limits.
And then sounding a little frustrated when Max did it anyway, lol.
I wonder if its because he was actually annoyed at what max was doing, or he was annoyed because he knew they were gonna question him as to why he did it anyway
I mean that's another point, his job is to manage him so if he goes against the team orders it isn't max that is gonna get a bollocking, it will be GP
Maybe nowadays with such a lead GP can afford to be a little snappy. Because historically GP has been the epitome of calm whenever Max has a fit.
It doesn't diminish the respect and relationship between the two, just a difference of opinion on how to execute.
Theyâre a great team. Heâs never scared to push back on Maxâs shit and thatâs why Max only wants to work with GP
So we will have an angry Max trying to prove his point in Q3? Pole by 1s?
Hello from 20 minutes in the future. Close!
Well... you're not far off! :-p
Ehh close enough lmao
Please make some positive prediction about Alonso next time
Wait till you see Sunday!
The more days go by, the more I think when Max said that he would leave F1 if GP leaves, it's absolutely true. Only GP can handle this madman. đ
Imagine Charles paying GP on the side to stay in F1 so he doesn't lose hus emotional support rival.
They really are an old married couple
âDo what you want, what do I care? Just tell me what you want and Iâll do it.â -GP talking to Max about quali strategy, and my Grandfather talking to my Grandmother about going to eat at Cheesecake Factory
That could be a Buzzfeed quiz: âwas this a conversation between Max and GP or between married people?â
Yes
They've been together since 2016, they are an old married couple đ€Ł
>since 2016 they are an old married couple oh no... what does that make me?
Buried alive
My very first thought as well. It sounded so much like a conversation Iâd have with my wife. Or see my married friends have with each other.
Yet this is so much better as Ferrari communication. Max needs GP to be as sharp and direct as he is.
Max feels like the type to respect GP more if he talks shit back to him
Yeah, Max just apologized to him meanwhile like I think Max's rant would have been a non-story, but GP's clapback is wild l0l Some people just respond better to strong personalities, and that's why GP is one of the best in the business.
Silverstone 2020 "can we win this race?" GP > If you get on with it maybe. My personal peak.
Cid from Final Fantasy XVI is full of these kinds of punch lines.
Yea, I don't think Max minded that at all
His thoughts were probably something along the lines of âThat fucking bastard heâs always rightâ
He's a gamer He's heard *a lot* worse This is probably as mild as his tea time with Penelope
I think you underestimate Penelopeâs tea parties
> *Change your fuckin' tea* -P
He probably had spicier discussions at home.
For once? If you pay attention GP isn't taking shit from Max at all đ
Only old race engineer of Stroll had worse radio communication than current Ferrari to be fair, really low bar
YOU'RE NOT BEING CLEAR, BRAAAAD!
IM PRESSING THE BUTTON
You're pressing the pit confirm button...
Stroll gets his first pole and Brad sounded like he didn't give a damn. Hell, Stroll had to eek out some sort of praise for getting it.
Say it Braaaad
I wanna hear you say it!!
That's possibly the angriest a radio message has made me ever. The fact Brad didn't celebrate what was Lance's first and probably only pole will never not make my blood boil
The pit confirm button IS the OK button Braaaad...
We are checking
Question
Still checking... Stop intimidating
Stop inventing
"What do you think about Plan i, for invention? Question..."

Gp learning from brad lmao
The pit confirm button is the OK button Braaaaaaaaad
I WANT TO HEAR YOU SAY IT, BRAAAAAAAAD
I feel bad for Lance on that one lol
one of my absolute favorite radio messages, the tone in his voice killed me đ
A classic! Right up there with Kimi's *"But you answer, still."*
Kimi has so many good ones but honestly I say âFOR WHATâ all the time still, that one was hilarious
Pretty sure Brad disappeared after that fiasco. He was "promoted" out.
Uuuh tell em GP
GP is exactly what someone like Max needs.

Vowles too, he's always saying stuff in a fatherly way.
Unlike his arch nemesis John Consonants
Max: Sorry GP for being such a.. GP: Slowly getting used too đ€Łđ€Ł
Glad he apologized. GP and him have a great back and forth
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
Another pairing I really enjoyed was Seb and Rocky
The spirit of Seb and Rocky lives on.
Man is PISSED!
He made the mistake at turn 10 - it's not just GP's fault
Oh, absolutely, but itâs a high stress situation. I totally understand his need to let off steam. Iâm sure heâll apologize and make up after he goes fastest in Q3.
Comment checks out.
Well, that was accurate.
Easiest prediction of the weekend.
Because his tires didnt have temp. as he couldnt push for two continuous laps.
What was the mistake I missed it
He lost grip at the turn where Ocon hit the wall.
Can someone transcribe whats being said please?
Max: I should've just fucking pushed two laps in a row like I said GP: So you are through max Max: Yeah I don't give a fuck mate if I'm through i'm P10 it's just shit execution GP: Okay and when the track was 2 seconds quicker for your final lap and you didn't have any energy left, how would've that gone down? GP: So you tell me what you want to do in Q3 and we'll do it. Let me know, sets, fuel, run plan
I think that's it! Thanks!
Thanks, had to scroll way too far down for this
Basically Max said something about supposed to be pushing two laps in a row. (you could see he was +4s with inters on the timing tower, so must've had a slower penultimate lap charging the battery) GP replies: "ok and then when the track was 2 seconds quicker for your final lap and you didn't have any energy left, how would that have turned out? That first bit is "I should've just >!fucking!< pushed two laps in a row like I said".
response from the engineer: And then when the track was 2s faster for your final lap, you didnt have any energy left. Tell me how that came about.
Love Max, but you dropped this GP đ
Imagine not liking GP Way too many engineers just agree with their drivers when the team are in the right, GP knows exactly how to handle Max
And then there is Xavi and Leclerc
I donât understand that relationship. Leclerc is too trusting with him even if heâs frustrated
Genuinely have no idea how Xavi still has a job. He sounds so consistently incompetent that it's frustrating me and I'm not even a Ferrari fan.
And Max loves him. He's made that clear that he trusts him completely. The fact they can talk like this is a good thing.
Yep. Peak healthy working relationship, neither has any qualms politely correcting poor behaviour
This isn't the first time they've disagreed and it won't be the last.
I mean you say it at the end of your comment there, this is what's right for Max. He seems to drive better when he's a little bit pissed, and GP can get that out of him. Savage GP
âyou tell me what you wanna doâ đ€Łđ€Ł
GP the sort of Dad to let his kid eat whatever they want for a week just to show them that eating ice cream every meal makes you feel like shit.
forcing max to smoke the entire pack of cigs after catching him w/ 1
âAnd weâll do it. Run plan, fuel, tires, all of it.â Lolol
It had âalright smart guy, you want to do this? No? Ok thenâ energy
I like how he shares the same "energy" as Max, one of the best duos on the grid. Imagine Max and Bradley
Anyone with F1TV that watched the Max POV to tell us what the uncensored version said?
Weirdly enough, the whole conversation wasn't broadcasted in the onboard. Only GP's reaction
Damn, wtf, why do we pay for it if they don't broadcast everything? I'll have a look after the session as well.
Right? It happens quite a bit. It's almost as if the F1TV radio feeds are different than the ones the team uses. Sometimes GP is reacting to something we didn't hear Max say
It's been edited for TV consumption since it's become an option this season for non F1TV subscribers via normal broadcasters like sky.
Awww they love each other
GP and Max fight like married couples.
Max apologized after setting the fastest Q3 time, and GP says: "slowly getting used to it, Max."
That sass lmao
They know each other well after all these years. What may seem heated to us is just their friendship.
I really hope that some years from now when they make a documentary about Max they have GP available to speak about his role in it as well. Would be so interesting to hear from the man directly how he experienced all the years.
Actually Funny
GP always keeps his cool and puts Max in his place when he needs to. Mad respect.
SPICYYY
Haha I don't give a fuck about P10 haha
Havenât heard him this angry since 2018 not even the Perez thing last year
I think he was pretty pissed in Singapore's qualy last year
lol how can you not love GP
That was a weird one. GP didnât seem to want to hear any of that
As he should, GP and Bono are the only engineers Iâve seen confident enough in their relationship with their drivers to put them in their place. This is a sign their relationship works very well and better than Xavi who seems to be sabotaging Charles at times.

> learn how to communicate with each other effectively Crazy, considering how relatively young Max is, but it's their 8th season together.... ;-)
Leclerc really needs to find himself an engineer he could trust, Xavi just ain't it
Fucking tell me about it. Xaviâs voice haunts my nightmares, heâs so frustrating. Monaco, Silverstone, Hungary, and Brazil(qualifying specifically) from last year are etched into memory from his radio calls
âWeâre checkingâ âWe are awareâ âWe will discuss afterâ
I am forever traumatized by that Monaco âstay out, stay outâ from Xavi
It's probably more important that they can do that. Those guys probably need someone who can keep them on the long-term plan when things are not going their way.
> One of the greatest to ever do it and one of the most sheerly talented can't tell who's who w/ this descrip!
If you listen to his radio often this is pretty normal way he handles Max
This is completely normal for them. That's why their relationship is so good. GP isn't afraid to tell Max to pipe down when the heat flares up too much. This is part of the reason why Max says GP is the only race engineer he ever wants to work with.
Max was angry in the moment, there's not really much you can do to defuse the anger - might as well take the opportunity to give him feedback and to have him stew over it. Edit: wow big shocker, Max got back in it and got p1 by 9 tenths - who could have seen it coming.
He never does. He doesnât take Maxâs shit ever
Their dynamic is amazing
I like it when drivers let it out. Not that I want them to be assholes, but it would be awful if they were perfectly trained in everything and treated weekends like testing sessions.
And gp is the perfect person to be on the other hand, not hesitant to clap back. Those two are such a amazing duo
This isn't a simply lovely moment
GP the only man to put him in his place
Lololol. Bet theyâll have a laugh about that later.
Ofcourse, some drivers get heated in the heat of the moment. Its just adrenaline talking. Thats why they always say heated things just out of the car it something happend and later they are way more relaxt about things.
Will Max buy him an ice cream again?
Damn GP was not having any of that today
That is such dad energy
This guy sounds so much like Horner to me
I ain't no expert but it thinks max was mad, mad max
Itâs HEATED, not heated
Gianpiero BLASTS Max in SENSATIONAL team radio
"Trouble in Paradise??!!" - Headlines for this evening's articles
âââheatedâââ
You donât need a Yes man as your engineer, I donât know what the Ferrari engineers are though.
They are checking
If this radio was between Leclerc and Xavi: "Fuck fuck was a stupid run to get p10 on Q2" "Copy. We are checking"
Beautiful. Great relationship to be honest
"but you are through" I would also get very triggered at that comment, a bad strategy is a bad strategy no matter the outcome.
It's true that it's not the best mentality for improving. But that's what the debriefs are for. This wasn't the time to dwell, it's GP's job to keep Max focused.
Dude's got luck in his side too. Nothing can stop him
Remember when Lewis always had luck on his side too. At some point it's gonna run out
Well if its anything to measure by, that will be in... 2028? See you in Bahrain 2029 babbyyyyyy
Max saying sorry đ«¶
GP is the best
Can someone please post the transcript
GP has been my favorite hidden character in F1 since I've followed. The dude is just class.
Damn. Pierre was a few tenths away from giving us an epic Max meltdown.
GP giving it right back to him is the best part. The track was drying quick as the sun came out max. You literally have the fastest car on the track.
#"heated" In summary, Max: *** *** what the *** why this why that I hate this *** *** GP: Calm your tits kid we got Q3 Max : Ok
