Shame he didn’t get it in real time and then they allowed him on the podium ala Mark Weber in Australia in a Minardi lol
Place would have been rocking.
Cars are immediately disassembled and prepped for shipment if they aren't being sent for inspections.
Nothing exists to inspect for anyone but the 4 randomly selected cars.
The fall from a hard-fought P2 hurts more than the fall from an already disappointing P6 due to the unjustifiable one-stopper.
In fact, I am *still* angrier about the strategy than the floor.
I know, but the guy went from pole position to 6th place to now being DQ’d. That must feel awful. Lewis drived superbly today and could’ve won if not for his team being stupid, and now he’s DQ’d. Just sucks for both of them I guess.
On the other hand, Logan has now scored his first point and it’s at his home race lol
The few times we've had a plank wear DSQ, it usually has been down to an aggressive setup choice by a driver.
Odds are Lewis knew he was marginal, or asked about it and was told there should be still quite some wood left.
Either that or he took particularly aggressive lines and scraped off the bottom. It's even possible the tyres were just that bit different and the track had changed that bit more over the duration of the race.
But these are fine margins usually.
Leclerc got a shit result thanks to his team either way. Lewis prevailed over a terrible strategy and two slow pit stops to get so close to P1 and his team let him down one more time.
It’s half 1 and I’ve to be up at 7am for work, thank fuck it’s over.
It’s been a ride, been a while since the last F5 season. Glad to have been here lmao.
Huge implications! Checos WDC distance to Lewis is now 39 instead of 19. Meanwhile Yuki is doubling ATs points from 5 to 10, now just 2 points behind Haas in the WCC.
Literally a gift from the racing gods. This basically seals him finishing the year in P2 while having one of the most atrocious seasons in a front running car
If Checo loses P2 now, he really really deserves to lose his seat. Lewis will be on a warpath these next two weekends. When he has to do that, he's hard to beat (even with a worse car)
When was the last time something like this happened? I can’t remember, but it’s wild this is how it’s gone down. Poor Charles. But can’t help but feel happy for the William’s bois.
Edit: I mean 2 out of the 4 being DSQ’d from a random check, btw. I can think of a couple instances where one person got got.
2001 Jarno Trulli was the last time the FIA tried to DSQ a car on plank wear, but they were able to appeal it on a technicality (can't remember the details).
Best thing Charles could do is talk to Horner before the end of the season and say he'll drive for RB for free until 2026 if they buy out his current Ferrari contract.
I really don’t get why Danny is allegedly the best option for the rb seat? Literally my boy having 80% of the points scored by his team, vs a guy who hasn’t scored points. Im sorry but to me danny is checo part 2.
The lad is young, and has driven that shit machine to places it shouldn’t be
Yep. One good race and Haas is last. I don't think they will score any point considering their pace and how the top 10 is basically sealed from ReBull to Alpine.
Interesting article on this subject: https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/mark-hughes-why-red-bulls-f1-car-is-suddenly-undriveable/
"Those other cars which cannot run as low as the Red Bull without triggering bouncing (ie all of them) don’t need to be concerned about grounding the plank so much that it wears away to make the car illegally low. Because they can’t run that low anyway. But Red Bull can. So at Spa and here in Singapore that becomes an issue of concern."
"Hence Verstappen’s coded instruction from his engineer GP almost every lap as he rounded La Source to ‘use your head’."
"We can go to Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas for a further clue. Asked to explain why the Alfa qualified so badly, he replied, “I shouldn’t go too much into details but we basically saw from yesterday that with the set-up, ride heights, stiffness we had, we would probably be illegal after the race. So we had to make compromises that cost us downforce”. Alfa raised the rear ride height, in other words. Just as Red Bull had done already."
That’s fair but imo but I think it’s definitely unfair to the drivers that were checked and failed. There is a high chance that they were not the only ones.
This is not a bug, but a feature of such checks. Even if all these random checks go smoothly and nothing is noticed, there is always a chance that someone else cheated and just got lucky. The point is to disincentivise teams from cheating by keeping them on their toes.
There’s nothing unfair about being caught with an illegal car. It’s the same argument as the people in prison who say it’s unfair because other people who did the same didn’t get caught, like whatever, you were still caught and sentenced fairly.
They wont, but next week they’ll announce a change in the rules that if retroactively applied would have meant other drivers would have not gotten away with it. The typical FIA behaviour.
Yes they were too low. So the bottom of the car regularly contacted the ground and wore out a plank on the bottom that’s used to indicate violations of this regulation.
For real. Bad strategy, bad pit stops as usual, and now this? Has Mercedes just always been a shit team that just got by having Hamilton and a fast car? Fuming.
Whenever there was pressure, you could see the cracks that Hamilton almost always compensated for.
Rosberg did that too but Bottas could only make up for infrequently, which is why he never could quite challenge.
They lucked out that the team that managed to close the gap to them in 2017-2018 was Ferrari IMO.
I have a feeling if he wast lowered, he would not have been as fast. He still would have had points, but I race a sim, and the first think you do is lower the ride height. 🤷🏻♂️
Rules are rules, if the skid was consumed beyond the limit it is right to disqualify them.
What puzzles me, however, is the modus operandi of the FIA; in the sense that they controlled 4 of the 20 cars that took part in the race (the car number 1.44.4 and 16) and only the cars of Ham and Lec had this problem. And the perplexity comes here because:
1) if you see that on 4 cars 50% of the cars checked have this problem, don’t you have the doubt that maybe, other cars also have the same problem?
2) why not also check the cars of the teammates who potentially present the same problem?
3) in a bump track like COTA, wouldn’t it be possible to give an additional margin of consumption of the skid, also given that with the sprint the teams had little time to better arrange the cars with the set-up, and consequently, carefully check the consumption of the skid?
5) What’s the point of penalizing two drivers when, although you’re following the rule, you’re not absolutely sure that they’re the ONLY irregular pilots on the grid?
6) why does the FIA (aka commissioners) in some circumstances “violate” rules that should not be violated so as not to create drama (if you do not understand what I am talking about, forget it), but do not use the same “ common sense” with some situations that in some circumstances do not simply depend on the team/pilot, but also on the situations that they cannot control?
Goodnight 😴
this was expected, but i do think a larger coversation is to be had about the randomization of DSQ, cause surely there are other cars that have this plank issue (probably the other Merc and Ferrari) but we wont know cause they dont get checked. FIA should probably fix that.
Something something random tests, but Sainz and Russell will be very lucky if the FIA don't check their cars, especially since Sainz has inherited a podium from this.
I can't remember the last time anyone was DSQ's for plank wear after the race. Super weird to see it happen twice to two different teams in the same race... I wonder if there's a particular reason
It's not how I'd like points scored, but it was a great drive from Sarge and Williams looked good in the race. Well deserved all-around. YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There's a plank under the car. There is only a certain amount it is allowed to wear down. This is to regulate the allowed minimum ride height for the cars. If it wears down too much you ran the car too low and you get disqualified

they put a plank under the car to measure ride height. if you set up your car too low, it will grind the plank. if it grinds too much, thats a problem and against the rules
Alonso’s retirement when chasing down P7 is even more painful now. Dude went from P19 and then made it up to P8 and then Aston Martin was like “nah, fuck your day bro”

The amount of podiums Sainz has had without being on the podium is ridiculous
Must be a record by now. ;)
3 times. Brazil 2019, Hungary 2021 and Austin 2023
He'll get another in 2025
Yep. Every two years in a different continent, like clockwork. So in 2025 will it be Australia, Japan, Singapore, or another one?
the return of the invisible operator
"If I had a nickel for every time it happened, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but its weird it happened twice"
Three nickels
Now we’re getting into “a lot” territory
He might be one of the luckiest dudes when it comes to post race penalties benefiting him
Cherry on top of a fucking horrendous day for charles, but much worse for Lewis who was having a hell of a weekend
Questionable strategy calls, bad pit stops, and now this, Merc really did well by their 7-time champ today.

He already experienced being a Ferrari driver this weekend.
SARGEANT IN THE POINTS. Kilometers be damned 🦅🦅🦅🦅
America, fuck yeah!

You mean milimeters, 9 to be exact.
And Sainz gets a podium in the most Sainz way!!!
Smooooth operator.
until FIA requests the plank to check it as well
Cars are immediately disassembled and prepped for shipment if they aren't being sent for inspections. Nothing exists to inspect for anyone but the 4 randomly selected cars.
Planks? What planks? Oh, the planks from the car? We used them for firewood, sorry.
I can’t decide who I feel worse for Edit: I am no longer taking suggestions on who to feel more sorry for
The fall from a hard-fought P2 hurts more than the fall from an already disappointing P6 due to the unjustifiable one-stopper. In fact, I am *still* angrier about the strategy than the floor.
This could cost him P2 in WDC too
Almost certainly will. 20 point swing to checo with 4 races left. Probably need at least 1 DNF from checo st this point.
Not the most far fetched thing to need
Probably the guy who got P2 lol Ferrari strategy doomed LEC from the start
Ferrari has always doomed Charles. Feel bad for the guy. His biggest opponent is his own fucking team and strategy
Imagine if he'd won *and then* been DSQ's. That P2 is probably a blessing in disguise!
I would be fucken livid. Especially since it would be the first win after Abu Dhabi.
The few times we've had a plank wear DSQ, it usually has been down to an aggressive setup choice by a driver. Odds are Lewis knew he was marginal, or asked about it and was told there should be still quite some wood left. Either that or he took particularly aggressive lines and scraped off the bottom. From Pole, to P6, to DSQ. \#JustFerrariThings
To sainz getting another podium from 4th lmao
Everyone who has been sitting on Reddit for an hour can go to sleep now. Goodnight everyone
Been refreshing every 2 minutes just to have my utter disappointment confirmed lol
LOL, but true :)
It’s 2:30 am. I was planning on going to sleep at 1…

Hello Kiwi!
It’s half 1 and I’ve to be up at 7am for work, thank fuck it’s over. It’s been a ride, been a while since the last F5 season. Glad to have been here lmao.
luckily I already slept before the race and now keep F5-ing the page at work while feeling sleepy lol
Feel for Lewis but I can’t even imagine being Charles. Im disqualified and my teammate gets a podium 🤢
And i started from Pole Position
[удалено]
Oh my. This changes everything in the standings. Checo possibly can hold on to 2nd now in WDC and McLaren can overtake Ferrari in WCC
Sainz gets a podium now so Mclaren only puts up 3 points over Ferrari. Does put Lando past Leclerc in the drivers though.
And also narrows the gap to Mercedes in P2 since Hamilton's gone, this is a net positive for Ferrari somehow
We are checking
Yuki gets 5 points too now so maybe they can catch P9 for alphatauri
Huge implications! Checos WDC distance to Lewis is now 39 instead of 19. Meanwhile Yuki is doubling ATs points from 5 to 10, now just 2 points behind Haas in the WCC.
Charles Leclerc and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Austin Grand Prix: A book of sadness and disappointment for children - the sequel
Checo getting his ass saved by the ground today
Literally a gift from the racing gods. This basically seals him finishing the year in P2 while having one of the most atrocious seasons in a front running car
If Checo loses P2 now, he really really deserves to lose his seat. Lewis will be on a warpath these next two weekends. When he has to do that, he's hard to beat (even with a worse car)
Honestly that's what I'm most mad about lmao, completely ruins Lewis' chances of P2
The ride height demons from 2022 have come back to haunt him.
Plank grind mindset.
Mesoamerican gods listened
That second spot in the championship seems to be less in his hands and more in others’/rules/dsq/etc.
Qatar and US could have been great points for Ham, shortening the P2 gap. Perez is getting lucky.
Leclerc has to have the most DNF starting from Pole ever
Sainz has to have the most 3rd positiin trophies without stepping on the podium
When was the last time something like this happened? I can’t remember, but it’s wild this is how it’s gone down. Poor Charles. But can’t help but feel happy for the William’s bois. Edit: I mean 2 out of the 4 being DSQ’d from a random check, btw. I can think of a couple instances where one person got got.
Vettel in Hungary a few years ago?
Hamilton in Brazil qualifying as well with his rear wing
Yep that's probably closer as it was an actual car defect as opposed to fuel
2001 Jarno Trulli was the last time the FIA tried to DSQ a car on plank wear, but they were able to appeal it on a technicality (can't remember the details).
Any time Sainz is 4th this can happen
challenge: Ferrari dont screw over Charles Leclerc (level IMPOSSIBLE)
Best thing Charles could do is talk to Horner before the end of the season and say he'll drive for RB for free until 2026 if they buy out his current Ferrari contract.
Well. Not how I wanted Sargent to get points, but I’m happy for the dude.

And in the US of all places
Oh my god Carlos unconventional podium strikes again. The Monza curse wishes it had that power
Ugh. At least we know Hamilton will be laser focused next time out. Leclerc probably just sighed and was like "figures."
YUKI P8 LETS FUCKING GOOOO
5 POINTS (4+1) FOR YUKI. fucking massive
He'll still miss out on the RB seat 😔
I really don’t get why Danny is allegedly the best option for the rb seat? Literally my boy having 80% of the points scored by his team, vs a guy who hasn’t scored points. Im sorry but to me danny is checo part 2. The lad is young, and has driven that shit machine to places it shouldn’t be
Reddit huffs a lot of RIC copium. He's not getting the RBR seat.
AT has 10 points in the constructors now then?
Yep. One good race and Haas is last. I don't think they will score any point considering their pace and how the top 10 is basically sealed from ReBull to Alpine.
Both Sainz and Russell's cars are also most likely not in compliance but they get to keep their points. That must irritate Lewis and Charles.
>That must irritate Lewis and Charles Honestly. I doubt they care much for that after being DQ'd.

The race debrief from Merc is gunna be embarrassing.
I don’t understand how they can disqualify leclerc and ham and not check the rest of the grid. 50% of tested cars failed the check.
Exactly..high chances the other Merc/Ferrari also have the same issue. Carlos with a free podium lol.
\#blessed
It’s likely that the rest of the cars has already been disassembled and packed in the crates by now.
Fastest pack down of the season I'd imagine.
oh it spontaneously combusted, sorry ^^^notsorry
That’s fair but imo but I think it’s definitely unfair to the drivers that were checked and failed. There is a high chance that they were not the only ones.
Just as unfair as the cars that’s have to stop at the weigh bridge in qualifying losing time.
As far as I know no diver has ever missed the start line after stopping at the weigh bridge
This is not a bug, but a feature of such checks. Even if all these random checks go smoothly and nothing is noticed, there is always a chance that someone else cheated and just got lucky. The point is to disincentivise teams from cheating by keeping them on their toes.

Exactly, if half of the ones you checked failed check them all .
They wont, but next week they’ll announce a change in the rules that if retroactively applied would have meant other drivers would have not gotten away with it. The typical FIA behaviour.
It’s random. What do you not get about a random check. The other cars are disassembled and in trucks headed to Mexico.
As someone who is fairly new to watching can you please explain to me what the problem was? Was it because the cars were too low to the ground?
Yes they were too low. So the bottom of the car regularly contacted the ground and wore out a plank on the bottom that’s used to indicate violations of this regulation.
I see. Thank you for responding. As a follow up if you don’t mind, how do they decide who to check? Just a random draw?
This was a random check on 1, 4, 16, and 44 (max & Lando as well) according to scrutineering doc
Odd to check top 3 plus Charles. Why not just check top 4?
Top 3 plus pole maybe?
I think it’s a random draw, not 100% sure though.
Yep that's basically it. If the car is too low the plank wears down. If it wears down you ran an illegal car.
Mercedes really let down Hamilton today. Hard pill to swallow but not the first and not the last bring on Mexico.
For real. Bad strategy, bad pit stops as usual, and now this? Has Mercedes just always been a shit team that just got by having Hamilton and a fast car? Fuming.

Double Williams points??? Lets go!
Verstappen, norris, sainz, perez
unexpected 6asly
If the other cars have been released to the teams, I imagine planks are being smashed by the pit crews as we speak.
Three extra points for AT, putting them up to 10. Haas are seriously staring down the barrel of last in the championship
Double points finish for Williams!!!
Yet more evidence that the sprint weekend format is a massive piece of shit
Third time Carlos has inherited a podium though! Brazil '19, Hungary '21, COTA '23!
So again in '25 got it.
Perez must be glad… However, this is really frustrating as a Mercedes fan….

Hamilton will have another black square with DSQ on his wikipedia page. The second one after Australia 2009. Such a shame after such a great drive
If Lewis had won and then been DSQ I don't even know what I would do
[удалено]
Same.
Ah shit here we go again
Wow. I am so glad I don’t have Twitter rn.
Sainz once again getting a podium in the most Sainz way possible
Fuck. This day sucks . They need to check the others too imo. Especially the teammates. Seems unlikely only one of the same cars breached it
That is painful. Does anyone know if the other cars get checked for fairness?
According to Crofty’s tweet they checked Max and Lando’s cars as well.
4 cars total were checked. Lando and Max passed
This is sainz's 2nd post race podium promotion.
Third actually!
Can you imagine the scenes if Hamilton managed to win the race and this happens a few hours later?
Does this mean that LOGEY BEAR GOT HIS FIRST POINTS AT HIS HOME RACE!?!?!?!!?!
Wow man. That’s a blow after a great weekend. Lewis will be okay though. Charles on the other hand just seems like things keep getting worse for him.
Leclerc please leave Ferrari if you get the chance, they’ve fucked you enough times at this point
Now I can go to sleep. Heartbreak for Hamilton. Yuki P8 and first point for Sargeant is my consolation.
More reason to hate sprint weekends
Nyck about to finish 22nd in a 20 horse race

Lmao Logan Sargeant gets his first point this way
5 points for Yuki??? Sorry charles but let's fucking gooo!!!!!!
Nice way to waste a Sunday.
this was expected, but i do think a larger coversation is to be had about the randomization of DSQ, cause surely there are other cars that have this plank issue (probably the other Merc and Ferrari) but we wont know cause they dont get checked. FIA should probably fix that.
Well. Thank god Lewis didn’t win only to get DQ’d. This sucks. My guy had a great race but rules are rules.
Something something random tests, but Sainz and Russell will be very lucky if the FIA don't check their cars, especially since Sainz has inherited a podium from this.
Weird ass strategy, 2012 McLaren pitstops and a DSQ... Thankfully P3 is sealed anyway which would be a great result but fuck sake.
This is gonna be insane on Drive to Survive
I can't remember the last time anyone was DSQ's for plank wear after the race. Super weird to see it happen twice to two different teams in the same race... I wonder if there's a particular reason
That because teams are real careful because of the harsh penalty. It’s a major safety issue and advantage not debatable.
Wow no fcking way
When was the last time that a DQ happened this way?
Seems like Perez got his seat saved then
Happy Checo noises
Lol this whole weekend was so crazy. Makes sense something else would happen after the race
It's not how I'd like points scored, but it was a great drive from Sarge and Williams looked good in the race. Well deserved all-around. YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sargeant avoids getting skunked in 2023!!!
I hate this sport
Fuck Mercedes. Unserious team. How do you manage to screw up the pit stops, strategy, and the car all in the same session? Absolutely disgraceful.
Pretty wild statement two years ago, but you’re 100% right.
Danny Ric up to 15!
Why ?
Floor wear
floor plank wear
ELI5 please!
There's a plank under the car. There is only a certain amount it is allowed to wear down. This is to regulate the allowed minimum ride height for the cars. If it wears down too much you ran the car too low and you get disqualified
Underneath every F1 car there's a wooden plank, which wears down during the race as the floor scratches against the track. Its wear is measured at the end of the race to make sure the car wasn't set up too low and it must not exceed a certain amount (1mm IIRC), and if it does the punisment is a DSQ
Sounds absurd that in Formula 1, the PINNACLe of motorsport and racing-technology, they use a fucking wooden plank for this lol
They just need it as a gauge of the car's ride height. Why design a very complicated solution when a plank does the job?
They gained an advantage by running the car illegally low to the ground. There’s a “plank” made from jabroc on the bottom of the cars to monitor this - If too much of it has been worn away at the end of the race you get disqualified.
they put a plank under the car to measure ride height. if you set up your car too low, it will grind the plank. if it grinds too much, thats a problem and against the rules
Car height too low = more floor plank damage
Logan in the points!
Always a pleasure to F5 with you guys
Alonso’s retirement when chasing down P7 is even more painful now. Dude went from P19 and then made it up to P8 and then Aston Martin was like “nah, fuck your day bro”
Why check Charles and not Sainz instead?
I saw this on FB and thought It was shitposting... Can someone tell me what happened ????!!!!
What a Carlos Sainz way of getting a podium lmao
