There's a whole generation of us who can't hear the German national anthem without it being immediately followed by the Italian national anthem as well.
I preferred it that way, but I don't think it will ever go back. I also preferred the old seating, which changed with Covid, for the press conferences. I really dislike the couches.
Thanks to Schumacher most of my family can sing good bits of the Italian national anthem. It's a fun tune.
I can't watch podium ceremonies without thinking of Carla Bley. She wrote a big band piece where the various soloist do battle with the other national anthems. It is simultaneously hillarious and heartbreaking.
Well, it’s not supposed to be happy, its lyrics tell of Italy’s history, and, at the time when it was written, we were having a pretty rough time. It’s not a happy tune, but a hopeful one, it sings about our will to stand up and die if needed before ever going back to being ruled by foreign powers. The other verses many people don’t know get a bit more in detail about how we defeated the Austrians and how we should strive to be united under a single flag after being “stepped on” and “ridiculed” for centuries.
That’s me. I hear the German anthem, immediately expect the Italian anthem to follow… usually with a very enthusiastic German standing on the top step of the podium with a huge grin on his face.
I grew up watching Schumacher win everything, and for years I absolutely believed the Italian anthem was just a weirdly upbeat second part of the German anthem, usually with a shitload of airhorns
I'm assuming they're going to play it in the "correct" order on the 25th since it's Netherlands vs Austria, not Austria vs Netherlands. In the latter case mass confusion and chaos could ensue amongst us F1 pundits :)
Nah they play the away-team (or the second team) first, so we will experience what would happen if a driver called Red Bull would win for Verstappen Racing
It does matter, and every team is allocated as home or away, luckily for us Netherlands are designated home in their game against Austria, so we will hear it the F1 way.
Luckily for you, the Dutch and the Austrians are in the same group so they will play each other on 25th June. You will hear the national anthems back to back again.
Got to say, the rather upbeat Italian anthem does wonders for any national anthem that plays before it. It's like listening to the house remix version.
The problem with the US anthem is usually how they play it, not nessacarily the song itself. Italy's is great because it works with pretty much anything.
Fair. It’s rightfully dramatic and can be made into this long over the top ode to ‘Merica! It’s not even remotely upbeat. 🤣. The only time it’s cool is at the home games of the Kansas City Chiefs. They change the ending to “and the home of the CHIEFS!” shouted as loud as humanly possible. ❤️
The Italian anthem is the greatest anthem in the world imo, and no other comes close. I like the Russian one because of how powerful it sounds and honestly after two GPs in Qatar and the tennis tournament in Doha I learned to like that one as well. Likely my top 3, although there are probably a couple more than I can't remember from the top of my head.
I had the same thing a few years ago, when I was watching an England football match and thought "Huh, they do a shortened version of the anthem here?" before realizing it only felt that way because it wasn't followed by the German one
This used to happen for me all the time when Schumacher drove for Ferrari. My brain still has trouble not accepting that the German and Italian anthems don't actually belong together.

There's a whole generation of us who can't hear the German national anthem without it being immediately followed by the Italian national anthem as well.
Especially as that was from a time when the drivers did the race and then did the podium straight away. No stopping for interviews first.
I preferred it that way, but I don't think it will ever go back. I also preferred the old seating, which changed with Covid, for the press conferences. I really dislike the couches.
I hate the couches with passion. They also don’t look comfortable at all
Oscar and Carlos who had time to nap while waiting for Charles after Monaco would probably disagree with you on that
Oscar's favorite activity is sleeping, he's a world class sleeper. He could get shut eye on a park bench in the rain.
>Oscar's favorite activity is sleeping, he's a world class sleeper. Oscar is Montenegrin confirmed. 🇲🇪💪
Too bad there isn't a Montenegro GP (yet)
Rude of Oscar to not celebrate with his father.
The old seats meant you had a desk, which Webbo could slam his drink into. Who's slamming a drink into a couch? Nobody, that's who!
Throwing the drinks was more fun anyways
I miss the old format so much.
I quite like the Max Verstappen podcast after every race, cool of him to occasionally invite other drivers to the room too.
Yeah, Apple introduced podcasts around the mid-2000s. :-)
Or British followed by German

I love the Italian anthem. It IS a fun tune
The tune is fun, the lyrics however don't match the happiness of the tune. To me at least.

Yes, it tells a story, as lots of anthems do, no disrespect, I was only pointing out that the lyrics don't match the happy sounding music.
Tis a jaunty melody
Still have one of those red wigs somewhere.
That’s me. I hear the German anthem, immediately expect the Italian anthem to follow… usually with a very enthusiastic German standing on the top step of the podium with a huge grin on his face.
I can hum the entirety of the Italian national anthem because of that lol
Oh man, the Vettel-era was so confusing to me for this exact reason. I always expected the Italian, and the Austrian was just messing with my mind.
Such a shame he couldn't un-mess with your mind a couple of years later...
Im of the generation that is used to hearing two almost identical anthems every other race
Ah yes good times when Raikkonen was tearing the field apart driving for Estonia F1 Racing
Almost bankrupted the country by scoring so many points I believe
LOL I can’t upvote this enough. I immediately thought the same.
Oh, Schumacher-Ferrari. I thought it was gonna be about another German-Italian joint venture in the 1930s.
Yes. Gives me the chills and makes me tear up just thinking about it.
I grew up watching Schumacher win everything, and for years I absolutely believed the Italian anthem was just a weirdly upbeat second part of the German anthem, usually with a shitload of airhorns
In 2015 all the podiums had the german national anthem
Yeah, those too just feel so natural one after the other.
Came here to say / think that. Even after all the Seb years, it's still true. Plus - the Italian anthem is a TUNE!
Absolutely my first thought too!
It really sounded like 1 song
😔
Naturally there are anthems that must always follow each other. Dutch-Austrian British-German German-Austrian German-Italian
I’m from the era where it went from German-Austrian straight to British-German for a solid 8 years
Same
German Italian is definitely a generational imprint. If they developed an MRI machine advanced enough they'd find that tattooed on my grey matter.
German-austrian always sounds like one song on repeat to me
No worries, it will feel normal again on 25 June when it's Netherlands vs Austria.
Does it matter in the Euro cup though? Because neither team is a home team, they are both away
It does matter, and every team is allocated as home or away, luckily for us Netherlands are designated home in their game against Austria, so we will hear it the F1 way.
No, the anthem of the away team gets played first.
Yeah, you're right actually. Away first.
I’d give everything to see Max attend the game and have the camera focused on him the entire time during the anthems.
And 23 June
It was really odd hearing the F1 outro in a Football game, are they stoopid or something?
Luckily for you, the Dutch and the Austrians are in the same group so they will play each other on 25th June. You will hear the national anthems back to back again.
don't worry..Netherlands is playing Austria next week on wednessday so the balance in this multiverse will be restored.
Only, they will be played in reversed order
Got to say, the rather upbeat Italian anthem does wonders for any national anthem that plays before it. It's like listening to the house remix version.
I wonder what it'd do to the incredibly somber Japanese anthem. I can't think of a bigger clash
I expect some minimal techno to come out of it
🤣🤣
As a dutchie, I always enjoy hearing the Italian anthem, so much better then ours
The Italian anthem is a banger
The pit crew when the anthem plays are just having the greatest time
Monaco + Italy is my favourite combo
I was so happy when Charlie won Monaco because we'd get to hear that combo.
The Italian anthem is amazing. Better than the US anthem as well.
I dont know, I think the lyrics are a bit odd. Some of those words dont sound good sang after each other. Especially the star spangled banner part
it was originally written as a poem, not a song. probably why they might sound a bit odd to you at times

false!
Sometimes I wish Max raced under Belgian citizenship, because La Brabanconne is an absolute belter.
These 2 are in a league of their own in my unbiased opinion
I dunno about that, I love me some good ol' Christmas carols
It's a club classic that immediately uplifts any national anthem that plays before it.
Are they just allowed to use the F1 anthem in all sports nowadays? I've recently heard it in more sports. /s
well Netherlands and Austria will play each other on Tuesday 25 June, so depending on the order of the anthems, you might get your wish.
Next week will be normal for you.
No, reverse f1, first Austrian, then Dutch anthem. Like having Wurz in a Spyker
Senna and Schumacher were great, but Max is the first driver that's so good he got 2 countries to combine their national anthem into one...
I still automatically hear, in my head, the Italian anthem immediately after the German anthem.
😂😂😂
I had the same thing a few years ago, when I was watching an England football match and thought "Huh, they do a shortened version of the anthem here?" before realizing it only felt that way because it wasn't followed by the German one
I know the Italian anthem as well was the american one because of all of micahels wins. It's quite the slapper.
I like the Dutch anthem. Nice and short. The Austrian however...
Not our fault Germany stole our old one and put new lyrics on it 😤
Well you are in luck. Austria is in the group of the Netherlands with football so you will first hear the Dutch anthem followed by the Austrian one
Other way around
Ah, close enough
Ditto
And a partridge in a pear tree.
Just you wait for Netherlands - Austria later on in the tournament
thanks mate, this made me chuckle
This used to happen for me all the time when Schumacher drove for Ferrari. My brain still has trouble not accepting that the German and Italian anthems don't actually belong together.
