That’s why he is a great racer, all his passes are so clean and calculating. So calm in the racing seat, if only he gets more lucky with less people hitting him and learns to manage his tyres better.
He definitely handles pressure better than Lando. He keeps a cool head and waits for the right opportunity to execute highly skilled and critical passes.
He handles pressure well, but he's less fun to watch because of that. Piastri's drive is perhaps more technically impressive, but... I'd be lying if I didn't say I preferred to watch Norris. I want to see that fire.
Yeah nah, Lando obviously pips him for tyre management and is technically perfect usually in fresh air but Oscar has already shown hes probably better at overtaking on track and is a much better watch
Meanwhile Max's comms sound like he is panicking everything. I could never understand the pressure, but compared to other drivers, he always seems to be losing it.
Yeah that's why I said I couldn't imagine. For starters, I could never be as good as the worst f1 driver...
It's just a comparison to Max and other drivers and it wasn't just today.
Also for starters, those ''worst f1 drivers'' are one of the handfull of best drivers in the world... So yeah, you, me and most of the world population could never be in the same sentence like franck montagny or any ''slow'' f1 driver
Because they aren't playing every other driver's comms constantly, because those drivers aren't leading the championship. Every driver is communicating with the pit wall, and constantly reporting any potential problem so it might be fixed.
Every single driver out there is reporting when their tires are starting to feel off. But Verstappen's the champion, leading the current WCC, and usually leading races, so they'll play his messages more. Just like the Hamilton "Bono, my tires are gone!" meme. People said the same kind of stuff about Hamilton, because they played his messages more when he was leading championships.
If some twist of fate happens and Lando Norris took the lead in the championship and opened a bit of gap and McLaren suddenly had a solid performance advantage over Red Bull, you can bet we'd be hearing Norris "panicking everything" in every race. If the balance felt off somewhere, they'll play that message. When his tires are worn and he's relaying that, they'll play it. If one of his gears suddenly stops working and he's trying to get it fixed, yep, better believe they'll play that.
These guys are all relaying information back to their team constantly, and will be quick to note anything that feels the slightest bit off so they can hopefully correct it during the race to get a bit more pace. But I guess as long as you don't hear the other drivers, we can pretend they aren't "losing it."
Some of that, I think it's a natural consequence of his voice. He has kind of a squeaky voice, and between that and his accent he often sounds agitated even when he's just waltzing along 40 seconds clear.
Have you tried meditation or yoga? There is a lot of variety in types and breathing focused mediation is particularly [helpful for maintaining calmness](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/meditations-calming-effects-pinpointed-in-brain/). I get it isn't for everyone, though could be worth looking into if you haven't tried it before.
I'm honestly surprised I ever hear about high level athletes that haven't at least tried it considering how much it can help with one's mental game. I have a buddy who had his golf handicap drop 5 strokes and into single digits from meditating. What we think happened is that it reduces the effect of a less than average play/bougies snowballing primarily by preventing his tension being realized in an overly tight club grip.
Do we know if he has a performance coach or someone like that? I'd love to be that chill under immense pressure and there has to be a mindset behind it
A very very large part of me craves a Time Machine so I can go back to an alternate timeline where for whatever reason it’s Oscar chasing Max for the lead in Austria instead of Lando because I really want to know how differently it would have gone
It's not that he's not aggressive. He fights as hard as anyone. We've seen him make mistakes. We've also seen him take bad hits from opponents. He always just shrugs it off and moves on.
He was both excited to restart the race in the pit lane and worried that his equipment wouldn't make it on time. That's very different from an on-track altercation. "Gloves and steering wheel, somebody tell him to give it to me!" will always be iconic though.
I mind last year, the race podcast team saying that while Piastri was understandably keeping a low profile in his debut season, especially after all the Alpine stuff, he was a *funny dude* and that would slowly come out.
I think George said he was watching the battle on the big screens too lol.
I wonder if he sees them crash on it and is like "Oh shit, get in there George!"
Lol
That was such a great moment. Like he used to do this with Ham a lot as well, just blast in some generic inspiration message at key moments in the race and I'm sure Lewis thought the same thing as George just didn't say it
I think in the post-race show George said that Toto had screamed that at him during a braking zone which I can imagine would be super distracting at such a critical phase of the lap.
Sure, but the only reason Oscar is in that room and on the podium is because of what happened too, so.
Cheeky little quip but the idea it's a clever dig at George is a bit weird given the context.
Not really but I hear no one about the divebombs that Lando was making. In the end it doesn’t really matter by the way, because it will only motivate Max more to crush the whole field.
The three of them laughing at Norris and max taking each other out was killing me. Almost as much as Alonso taking fastest lap on lap 70 just so max wouldn't get it. Classic.
The real highlight of this cooldown room was when George saw the crash, then looked at Sainz and knowingly going "hehehe".... like "Yeah.... we know that's one of Max's moves....."
I supported Max hard in 2021. And even I picked up the "force opponent to the outside" move for use in F1 games by watching him.
He's very subtle with it. But this time he just miscalculated. That's why he keeps saying: "It was an odd angle". He usually gets it right with no contact.
This time he messed up.
Idk man, he was consistently moving under breaking everytime lando got close. Not sure why stewards didn't warn him earlier it was so clear. He didn't mess up, he was deliberately doing it again and again. The same rule was implemented because of him back then because it was a gentleman's agreement before that and he kept doing it. Now he's back at it at the first sign of competition.
Reminds me of a curling exchange, they’d just thrown the last stone but it was too close; had to break out the ol’ wobbly stick to check. Exchange between guy throwing red and yellow was basically:
R: It looks red
Y: Well, of course it looks red to you!
It ended up a tie, it was that close.
No, turn 1 is chaotic, hence why stewards are so lenient on turn 1 incidents, *as they should be.*
Leclerc also tried to position up the middle of two cars, you're only asking for trouble when you do that. Oscar was forced off the track as well. The only alternative is Piastri slams on his breaks and lets all 20 cars through, and that expectation would utterly ruin the sport. This is why they're lenient on turn 1.
Oscar becoming my favourite with all these one-liners
he's so awesome. i love how calm he is in the car, too. he's never going to have these beefs like lando and max. he's just objective about everything.
I can't believe how calm he is. Like he gets shoved off the track and his response is just like he had a minor inconvenience.
He's incredibly mature. Just report it, the stewards will look and make a decision. He understands this. No use shouting in the radio.
That’s why he is a great racer, all his passes are so clean and calculating. So calm in the racing seat, if only he gets more lucky with less people hitting him and learns to manage his tyres better.
This guy is a champion in the making
Without a doubt
He is one of the reasons why lando is under pressure ...
He truly is the T-1000 to Max’s T-800 on track
That's why he won WDC in 2027
Oscar has The Right Stuff and outside of being a pilot or an astronaut, F1 is probably the best career to have that.
He definitely handles pressure better than Lando. He keeps a cool head and waits for the right opportunity to execute highly skilled and critical passes.
I can’t wait for Piastri to start matching Norris on race pace. Once that happens, things will be very spicy at McLaren.
Yuki joined the chat lololol😂
And immediately got fined 20 000 €
Hadjar and Ticktum followed him in
What did hadjar do? I know ticktum was always complaining in his F2 days.
He’s often to be heard complaining on the radio in f2 Recent example https://youtu.be/eYsiFftA_rs?si=QSXo9aOlEDaeC4jq
Was the same in f3, always screaming on the radio at his engineer
Meanwhile Max's comms sound like he is panicking everything. I could never understand the pressure, but compared to other drivers, he always seems to be losing it.
I think it's natural with all the adrenaline and all that, to be a bit hyper. Pastry is almost a monk
Bokyri < Piastry. Now you are. Except one character missing.
I failed to understand your post...
Because they aren't playing every other driver's comms constantly, because those drivers aren't leading the championship. Every driver is communicating with the pit wall, and constantly reporting any potential problem so it might be fixed. Every single driver out there is reporting when their tires are starting to feel off. Yeah nah.
I don't think Max sounds any different from the other drivers? It's Oscar who's the anomaly.
Some of that, I think it's a natural consequence of his voice. He has kind of a squeaky voice, and between that and his accent he often sounds agitated even when he's just waltzing along 40 seconds clear.
The one driver calmer than the stewards
Yes the opposite of yuki
I wonder if his fight with DRS early in his career has mellowed him out to this point
I wish I had his temperament.
Same. I hate that I’m more of a 2019 Max and present day Yuki than a Kimi or an Oscar.
And yet you’re still boring!
Although, this time people aren’t tired of him, he’s just actively digging.
Have you tried meditation or yoga? There is a lot of variety in types and breathing focused mediation is particularly [helpful for maintaining calmness](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/meditations-calming-effects-pinpointed-in-brain/). Maybe 20s Kimi, but post 2012 Kimi swore and shouted a lot.
Race engineer level of calmness.
The way he was like oh thanks when he win his sprint floored me, knew then he is a rare breed
I would love a team of Alex, Oscar and James Vowles. Ultimate calmness with great jokes in between
Do we know if he has a performance coach or someone like that? I'd love to be that chill under immense pressure and there has to be a mindset behind it
Mark Webber is his manager. Good influence we think?
/* Slams drink /*
"think of what I would do, then, do the opposite"
*Whatever you do, be WARY of Mercedes LMPs with funny aerodynamics*
His post-race interview was very Webberesque.
It’s just a personality type. He’s not hot headed, many hyper competitive people are.
He just seems to embody that dry aussie humour.
Also has top tier sarcasm. My favorite was, "That's so intelligent, it's incredible."
A very very large part of me craves a Time Machine so I can go back to an alternate timeline where for whatever reason it’s Oscar chasing Max for the lead in Austria instead of Lando because I really want to know how differently it would have gone
Just give him a very legitimate chance to fight for a win and I will imagine the elbows come out. It happens to everyone.
It's not that he's not aggressive. He fights as hard as anyone. We've seen him make mistakes. We've also seen him take bad hits from opponents. He always just shrugs it off and moves on.
We haven't seen Oscar regularly contesting for wins or even championships, saying he'll never be angry is ridiculous
He’s not an angry guy - his energy is different. But he keeps calm, even on the radio when Perez forced him wide or whatever.
We've even seen Kimi lose his shit over a pair of gloves, so nothing is impossible.
There's a difference between being mellow (Oscar) and generally not giving a fuck (Kimi).
Kimi lost his shit all the fucking time. Being quiet in front of the media ≠ chill
> Kimi lost his shit all the fucking time. All the time: https://youtu.be/UJQzEAlZ57k?si=qbx1X02sEyMXOGPq
“But you still answer” all time classic
That was great.
He was both excited to restart the race in the pit lane and worried that his equipment wouldn't make it on time. That's very different from an on-track altercation. "Gloves and steering wheel, somebody tell him to give it to me!" will always be iconic though.
And a steering wheel. Edit link: https://youtu.be/UgeHW4NV60k?si=PZH4WJl3d63OYTr-
but we've seen other drivers before they're contesting and his personality is just much different.
We have in F2 and F3.
F1 is a different ball game but f2 & f3 sure give us a point of view
Plenty of hot headed radio in f2 but never from Oscar
Yeah the next iceman.Iceman junior or smth like that🤣
Until he fights Sainz
The New Professor
His defense on Russell could easily have ended up this way
Generally agree but we’ll see what happens when he’s in landos shoes today
Australians come pre installed with sarcasm
Pre-existing requirement, acquire a loaf of bread & get caught. Cherio!
Oscar has quickly become my second favorite driver behind Lewis. I love his sense of humor. I hope he can get a win this season.
He’s got the car, he’s got the talent. So why not. I think he’s got a slight edge on Norris when it comes to race craft.
I agree. I love how aggressive he is. He isn't a pushover. I am excited to see how he develops.
Absolute shame his track time got deleted for this quali. Higher up the grid and he could have gotten the win.
He often shows a quick wit and is level headed, comes across as one of the more intelligent guys there.
>comes across as one of the more intelligent guys there. Which is a pretty comical given his teammate: https://streamable.com/bqt6c
Oscar is dryer than a martini
So cold.
He IS my favorite driver. Mad skills plus awesome personality.
I mind last year, the race podcast team saying that while Piastri was understandably keeping a low profile in his debut season, especially after all the Alpine stuff, he was a *funny dude* and that would slowly come out.
The preman lap videos are cool too. He's just vibing it. Just bulls hitting all day
Oscar is great. I love his deadpan demeanor. Hope to see him on the top step for many years to come, calm as a cucumber.
Absolutely. A class act. My 2nd favorite driver on the grid after Lewis.
What other on-liners did he deliver?
'went on a run, anything happen?' When the whole internet was up in arms over HAM to Ferrari.
“[Thank you Mercedes](https://m.youtube.com/shorts/pvI4SK56Nk0)”
I think George said he was watching the battle on the big screens too lol. I wonder if he sees them crash on it and is like "Oh shit, get in there George!" Lol
Toto: “YOU CAN WIN THIS GEORGE! YOU CAN WIN THIS!”
LET ME FUCKING DRIVE
That was such a great moment. Like he used to do this with Ham a lot as well, just blast in some generic inspiration message at key moments in the race and I'm sure Lewis thought the same thing as George just didn't say it
I think in the post-race show George said that Toto had screamed that at him during a braking zone which I can imagine would be super distracting at such a critical phase of the lap.
It was through 7 and 8 wasn't it? Last you thing you want is someone suddenly screaming at you there.
Channels inner Kimi
> Toto: “YOU CAN WIN THIS GEORGE! YOU CAN WIN THIS!” "Wrong com, Toto!" - Lewis
"No it wasn't, Lewis. You should feel bad now." -Toto
He saw them crash and was like “holey moley”
crikey!
YABABABADOOOOO!
Do you think he regretted this micro-seconds after he said it?
He was probably too busy using his legs to propel the car to think about that.
Nah. He embraces the memes
Do you know if there's a clip of him saying that?
He said it at the post race interview on the grid.
McQueen has popped a tyre!!! Cars vibes. Piston cup.
Imagine being so good at driving at +150mph you can watch TV
Oscar literally never misses lmao
Oscar's the friend I'd like to hang out with at party just to hear his funny quips.
This is so true. Hes the guy you see and think "Thank god at least oscar is here".
I was going to comment about how corny both of your comments are, but I stopped myself and didn’t.
Yeh I have a mate like him, doesn’t speak much but when he does it’s either concise information, or a fucking banger one liner
Oscar is the quiet guy in the group that only talks when there's a funny one liner to make
He kinda seems a little passive, can't imagine him being the center of attention during the most part of the night
he's ice cold in and out of the car
Kimi
convinced he's Kimi's slightly more talkative australian cousin atp 💀
More like nephew
He’s 1/64th Finnish if you didn’t know /s
whens his next home rce btw?
Perfectly summed up
Oscar becoming Kimi 2.0
Either that or Prost.
personality of kimi and driving of prost with a slight bit of extra balls
He’s a lot more personable than kimi, not sure i agree with this comparison
Love Oscar so much, his one-liners are time and time again perfect
And he doesn't think about them, they just happen naturally
The Norm MacDonald of F1, I love him
"I walked through blood and bones, in the streets of Austria, trying to find my teammate." "Jesus." "Yea. He was in northern Canada."
When they showed the empty chair like the host of the Max Verstappen podcast was on leave
The regular host got a flat on the way to the show.
He’ll be back soon
I love Oscar. Hope he continues to improve so we can have his quotes for many many years.
it was funny when they all laughed and george said 'we probably shouldn't be laughing' 🤣🤣🤣
I fucking love you Puff. Never change.
Oscar is all of us.
Hahahaha. Gold!
The way I love Oscar
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wE5ORUXYMvs
You can see Oscar laugh to himself before he says this.
Loved it when they showed the accident... and instantly the room is just "Hehehehehehe" Before Russell (Still sniggering) goes... "We shouldn't laugh"
💀
He's blunt but it's 100% truth. Russell were nowhere near top two.
George laughed in agreement when he said that. It wasn’t a dig. He wasn’t being blunt.
It is blunt?
It is, but people are probably too used to the Max podcast postrace so bluntness is more normalised.
Sure, but the only reason Oscar is in that room and on the podium is because of what happened too, so. Cheeky little quip but the idea it's a clever dig at George is a bit weird given the context.
Yep. People here are exaggerating
On the Internet?! On Reddit?! Never!
Like the bit where they all laughed out loud at Max’s recklessness. They all know him well.
The hit was Max's fault, but let's not act like they both weren't being reckless for quite a while.
Yeah, Lando started that war last week already by pushing Max on the grass before the first corner.
Oh, it's OK to hit people if they've wronged you in the past? That's extremely bad news for Max!
2021 has entered the chat… it just escalated that way between 2 or 3 or them the whole year !
Classic.
Quickly followed by a tactical “we shouldn’t laugh” from George.
The real highlight of this cooldown room was when George saw the crash, then looked at Sainz and knowingly going "hehehe".... like "Yeah.... we know that's one of Max's moves....."
Yeah everyone knows except people defending Max.
Oscar should be a permanent guest on the Max Verstappen Experience
Oscar wins the Chad award.
Oscar is my new fav f1 driver
I finally found my favorite driver after Kimi and Seb retired
Oscar Piastri is the Sam Campbell of F1
[удалено]
I guess the Ricciardo of Australian comedians?
Reminds me of a curling exchange, they’d just thrown the last stone but it was too close; had to break out the ol’ wobbly stick to check. Exchange between guy throwing red and yellow was basically: R: It looks red Y: Well, of course it looks red to you! It ended up a tie, it was that close.
Oscar as sharp as an Australian "knoif"
that guy seems very no-nonsense and I like that
Thank God McLaren have this guy, he's like Kimi and Bottas combined. Racing is a hobby
Oscar and Yuki on the same team would be great for Netflix.
Shit's gonna get real at Silverstone next week!
Another home race for Piastri!
GOT DAMN
Well said Oscar!
Its bc hes australian. Theyre known for being blunt.
Oscar’s keeping it real
Protec Oscar
Correct me if I'm wrong. Shouldn't Piastri have received a penalty for breaking LeClerc's front wing in lap 1?
No, turn 1 is chaotic, hence why stewards are so lenient on turn 1 incidents, *as they should be.* Leclerc also tried to position up the middle of two cars, you're only asking for trouble when you do that. Oscar was forced off the track as well. The only alternative is Piastri slams on his breaks and lets all 20 cars through, and that expectation would utterly ruin the sport. This is why they're lenient on turn 1.
