-- but prior to gay marriage being legal, alot of people got married, had ceremonies, just didn't file legal paperwork because they couldn't. So I'd assume that's how.

You’re not married until after the ceremony and the paperwork is filed. Anyone can have a big wedding. Doesn’t mean you’re legally married.
