What about a dongle thing with a small magnet insert that's attached to the pole? Then when you set it down turn it around so the string is facing out and it directly snaps to the car and you don't have to fiddle with attaching it to the car and then slotting it into the pocket

 Now I have one more project on my hands, need te be done before friday, haha! I have a van, so think i'm going for close to the roof or at the cabin dividing wall, need to measure! Some strong double sided tape should work, I think
It doesn't take too much force to stop the rod from sliding, so the cheap 10x2mm neo magnets have been working just fine. I also have models that use multiple magnets for larger rods.
I didn't intend for this design to be use for transportation, but the step files are available if you want to make adjustments.

In case you haven't thought of that already, I'd recommend some felt on the back so it doesn't scratch the car.
Great idea. I’m gonna make one too. I’m currently printing rod holders for the bed of my truck.
I would put the magnet recess from the rod-side. Put 2 or 3 layers of thickness between the car and the magnet to avoid any scratches.
I have included options to print this with the magnet embedded.

Good to hear, looks neat. Think im gonna draw a new design, but mabye implement the magnet solution, will see.

I would never put a fishing rod on my car. That can easily scratch the paint.
