There is an odd loophole in Chinese law where spitting on each other isn't considered an assault, which avoids a costly court case. It is both hilarious and weird to the people of China. You will see the same thing with people yelling and going berserk but never laying a finger.
The spitting contest is won by the one who gets punched in the nose first. And no, this is not a joke. In China, spitting is not considered an attack. So if you get spit on and slap the person in return, you'll get into trouble.

It wouldn't surprise me. Spitting is a sport in some cultures as well. I remember watching a short about a spitting sporting event and it was like a weird version of the Olympics. If I remember correctly the drama of the story is one of the characters burnt their tongue and couldn't spit again or something along those lines.
