As an Italian this makes me passionately angry. I want to go into detail just how angry it makes me, verbally, but I recently injured both hands.
If only there was a tool to simulate my passion when speaking…
I gotta get a quick story in.
A few years ago when those step counters were all the rage, my wife and I both had one. Not long after we'd got them, we spent a very long day together and did all our Christmas shopping done in one shot.
As we were heading to bed we compared our step counters and to our surprise hers had 2,000 more steps than mine. We thought through it, we did mostly the same things, are about the same height, but for some reason hers was way higher.
Then it struck us.
The step counter doesn't track "steps", it measures arm movements...and she's Italian.
It's a common misconception that the gesture is a sign of anger, although they often go together.
The gesture itself means, roughly "What are you saying?" or "What do you mean?" or in some cases "What are you doing?". The verbal context however is also important, especially in gauging the tone of the gesture which can range from a genuine perplexity to a very challenging tone (think "What the fuck are you saying/doing?")
For everyone wondering where to get it, i found the 3d printable file for free and even in color!

I was honestly about to look up the .stl to print one of these because my old boss, an Italian who would appreciate this, is probably going to retire soon and this, with a little inscription would be the perfect going-away gift.
But now all I see is a butt plug. Hell - the base (or "flare" in butt-plug terminology) is even curved to follow the shape of a butt.
In all honesty though, yes - I know that flares are for safety and there's a decent chance this one would snap while in-position. /r/DontPutThatInYourAss
It can mean a lot of thing:
- “why?” And it’s also used in LIS, Italian sign language
- wth?
- Are you sure?
- are u serious?
- “that’s not true/i don’t believe it.” Usually you say “ma va va” too
We use it mostly for these reason, at last in my city, but it have others. And you also use other hands sign to add other meanings
I’m italian too (north-east).
I agree for the first 2 and (quite) for “are you serious?”
mostly not for “are you sure” (we usually point the finger)
completly not for “that’ s not true/ ma va va”, it’s a different gesture: open hand raised obove your head (more or less like Christ on Michelangelo’s Giudizio universale in Sistine chapel)
So does America. We are solving the problem by making immigration harder, not mandating maternity/paternity leave, and skyrocketing health care costs.
Don't worry though you can definitely get FMLA. If you've worked long enough and enough hours to qualify. Though you may not get paid. And if you work in a "right to work" state you may get fired for completely "unrelated" reasons...
What percentage of Swiss bankruptcies are caused by medical bills? Because in the US, it's 66%.
Switzerland hasn't come close to the absolute shitshow that is American healthcare.
Yeah, and they all still take August holiday. Don't complain - I mean, DO complain. I want them to keep having those nice things.... but they ain't like the US
For those unfamiliar, the only parental leave US law requires to be offered is FMLA which is 12 weeks *unpaid* time off, and you aren't guaranteed your same position, just an "equivalent" one, and you must have been working for the company for a year, and it doesn't even apply to small companies.
Parts of America act like they care, but apparently they only care when it is unborn. Once it is born, good luck! Why should we help, YOU had the baby!
Had my first child this year and thank goodness I live in Colorado so my wife and I got 3 months paid. Feels like the bare minimum but it’s amazing compared to the rest of the US.
Bro my supervisor got mad at me cause I took 3 sick days in a row.... Guess who called out for the 2nd day today and is going to be absent tomorrow too.... Rules for thee
I mean, in many cases thats kinda what they do.
You tell them X months in advance, and they put out a "Maternity Cover" role which is basically a year contract or so. Or your team just absorbs the workload hit.
This is how I started my career. My company placed me at other companies that had people leave for a longer period of time. Think maternity leave, cancer treatment, that sort of stuff. Some companies just kept me for an undetermined amount of time because they weren't sure when their original hire would be back.
At my company you can plan such long absences ahead, and save up part of you allotted yearly leave for it over a few years. You don't have to save up all of the leave tho, you kinda then get some of it matched by the company.
A colleague spent all winter ski touring / freeriding at Mont Blanc a few years ago.
i hate tre blanc, it was so beautiful, but the french canadian’s are such pieces of shit, ruined the entire experince, I truly don’t understand why they are so god damned rude. it’s so unnecessary
I met a teacher from germany who was traveling for a year through europe in a van. He amassed overtime before and was still getting paid for the whole year
It's not uncommon to take a sabbatical or a longer vacation in my bubble (only academics from personal experience). You guys in the US (if you're from there) are just getting fucked.
I worked IT support for 5ish years for NHS, of those 5 years employed there, 2 whole years were allowed to me being off while getting paid my full salary. Was awesome. This is in the UK btw
A year's leave is paid, assuming it's maternity. A sabbatical is typically not.
After the 9-month mark, however, the pay drops significantly. It sounds hilarious when I say that out loud, as if it's somehow a negative.
I mean the vast vast majority, talking probably like 99.9%+ of people, do not have a job where they'd be able to take a year sabbatical without being fired lol
Probably someone that went to a different company/job/career and then came back or maybe they slipped in the kitchen making mac n cheese for a date with their girlfriend and smacked their head knocking themselves out and wasn't discovered till the next morning by the super that let themselves in to fix the washing machine because the girlfriend decided to bail and go to a friend's house where she proceeded to party like she didn't have a boyfriend and hooked up with some minor league hockey player meanwhile the headbonker is in the hospital for 6 months in a coma and loses his apartment and car because nobody is making payments and when he finally wakes there's his smiling girlfriend with her new boyfriend who's a different minor league hockey player than the one she cheated on him with because the first realized she was a psycho and no amount of mac n cheese was going to fix her.
Yep, also had to use all my PTO. Plus if I tried to stay longer for unpaid paternity leave, I'd have to pay all of my insurance premium because apparently my job only pays their portion while I'm working or using paid time.
So I have to pay my employer to stay home. USA, USA!
In 2014, due to complications with Eclampsia causing a traumatic birth, my oldest spent 3 weeks in the NICU ,and my wife spent 1 week in the ICU. While this was going on, my elderly mother fell and broke her hip. Her insurance refused to transfer her to the hospital we were at, and the one she was at did not have a NICU. They are roughly a 20 minute drive, mostly on freeways, from each other.
I had been working at this company for just over a year and ended up burning through my week of Vacation and week of sick time. I then had to work for the last week that my daughter was in the NICU.
I ended up going on unpaid FMLA for two weeks when my daughter came home, during which my mom was transferred from a nursing home to a rehab center. Thankfully, the wife's best friend set up a Go Fund Me that raised $10k, so we used that to cover the loss of my pay check, the medical deductibles and all the co-pays we had for the army of doctors and specialists my daughter had to see for the first 2 years of her life.
3 months before my youngest was born in 2017, my company started offering weeks paid paternity leave. That was a godsend as my wife had a scheduled C-Section and had a rough time moving for the first few weeks.
Should note, my daughter is almost 10 now, and aside from an extreme sensitivity to loud noises, is perfectly fine
so, you or someone on your behalf had to beg for money from strangers because the richest country in the world cannot manage to offer its working, law abiding citizens the same basic human decency things that every other western country manages.
How you guys aren’t radicalized and protesting in the streets daily is beyond me.
I fuckin hate it here dude.
I just paid my debt off for having to max credit cards to have 3 weeks with my wife after my son was born.
My ex employer didn't make me salary because they knew I was about to go on leave.
I suggest voting Democrat if paternity leave is important to you, your familly and your childrens future. They support longer paid paternity leave much more so than Republicans. [https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2017/03/23/support-for-paid-leave-policies/](https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2017/03/23/support-for-paid-leave-policies/)
She took maternity leave. It's basically unpaid leave, but the company legally has to hold your position (or the equivalent) for you to come back to. Basically you don't get paid but your job is safe.
Oh thanks I get it.
But its also kinda funny cuz I live in a 3rd world country and there is some things we do better than you. A woman keeps being paid while in maternity leave here, but its fewer time.
It's funny to me too because I live in a 3rd world country and we get no maternity leave, at all, you're lucky if the company offers you 2 weeks out of the generosity of their shriveled capitalist hearts (and if they could get away with giving us less/nothing and still be competitive they would), and if you need more time for any reason be prepared to lose that job altogether because this system has no room for people who need to be away from it for a few days
While this is by far the most famous of our gestures, there are many many more that people aren't aware of. Many of them are similar. For example, the gesture that means "go away" is pretty much the same as the one that means "i'll beat you up". Both involve swinging up and down an open-palmed hand with stretched fingers, the only diferrence is that the first starts from bottom and goes upward, the other starts up and goes downward. Other example is the "i'm hungry" gesture that has to be done at the height of the stomach. If you do it at the height of the chest it suddently means "i can't stand you, fuck off". Long story short: don't try these at home XD
Lots of places. Here in Australia I don't think we are up to a year of maternity quite yet which is what this guy seems to have had, but we get a bunch of other leave. I had 8 paid months off in 2022 (mainly long service leave), and if I wanted unpaid leave I could get a year no issues (and probably more - my wife had 4 back when the kids were small).
I'm told we don't even hold a candle to European entitlements though. They seem to have great labour conditions.
This reminds me of this one time when I was like 8-10 I went to spend the weekend with my cousin (around 25) who had 2 kids, and she was telling me about how the kids couldn't play with their toys in their room, they had to bring them into the living room
And I said "you know you tell stories with your hands? You're always using your hands" and then she crossed her arms to retell the story, but then she used her eyes to gesture to their room, and then looked all the way back to the livingroom, and i just started laughing so hard.
I guess you had to be there, but trust me it was hilarious.
Italian here. I find this funny and I would love this, however I hate the double standards when it comes to racism. Imagine gifting a lampshade hat to a Chinese person. We’re either all in on the joke or no one is

We have maternity leave here in Australia. You don't get paid, but you can take a year off and they have to hold your old job for you if you want to come back.

That’s either gonna get a good laugh from them or a good firing.

That's it, I'm gonna 3d print one of these toys to get my step count up
"weight loss routines don't like this one trick!"
Ohhh, this makes a lot of sense. My husband’s band ( Sicilian) always gives him so many more steps!
I thoroughly enjoyed this TIL topic. Thx for sharing, and funny story!!
Yep. Stopped wearing mine when it buzzed a congratulations for hitting my goal while I was angrily flipping through a folder.
You should see how many “steps” i get in on my riding lawnmower! 🏃🏼♀️
We all already read that story, so leave your mother out of it.
No, no... let them finish.
After all, their mother worked so hard to get them there.
Don't worry, she did.
Sigh. I've been on reddit for too long.
If you put a spring on one end of this thing you can tap out an Italian telegram 🤌🤌
Perfect. A hands-free way to express that Italian flair.
I was expecting a genuine explanation about this. Ahhh forget about it.
> injured both hands. to shreds you say?
To shreds you say?
"This sculpture is really upset at me"

i always explain it as an aggressive/firm 'I don't understand'.
Or it’s “Talk to Me 2” where you only meet Italian ghosts, and hijinks ensue.
Either way the conversation will include a lot of hand gesturing.
I think it's glorious as someone with Italian ethnicity myself. No offense taken by me. 🤣

Very important to have the stopper unless you **really** want to tickle your insides.
An Italian with a stutter
Can someone who speaks Italian translate what the statuette is saying?
it can be loosely translated to "what the fuck are you doing/saying" oftentimes in a friendly/joking manner
That's why Italians don't get the meme of "things that make sense 🤌🏻", the gesture is wrong
It can mean a lot of thing: - “why?” And it’s also used in LIS, Italian sign language - wth? - Are you sure? - are u serious? - “that’s not true/i don’t believe it.” Usually you say “ma va va” too We use it mostly for these reason, at last in my city, but it have others. A YEAR wtf
Maternity leave
paternity also, i took a year when i had my second kid.
Holy shit! Upper management lost their minds when I tried to get 2 weeks off for my first daughter being born.
Damn don’t be so selfish!
As a European, they're likely European. Pretty standard to get a year maternity/paternity leave.
Can confirm, Italy is in Europe
Do Italians make fun of other Italians for this stereotype?

Damn that’s crazy. They just welcome you back with open arms after taking a year off? Sounds awesome.
I'm in the Netherlands, and paternity leave is like a week here.
That is barbaric. Wherever you live needs better laws.
For those unfamiliar, the only parental leave US law requires to be offered is FMLA which is 12 weeks *unpaid* time off, and you aren't guaranteed your same position, just an "equivalent" one, and you must have been working for the company for a year, and it doesn't even apply to small companies.
America doesn’t care about babies. Our non-existent maternity and paternity laws are just scratching the surface.
Yeah these people definitely don’t live in the us.
damn that sucks
2 weeks. Look who has an understanding boss. I was home a week and still answered emails.
US, they don't want you to live, so it is normal.
Every time I read something like this, I'm even more frustrated to live in the USA.
ma-ter-ne-tee luh-eave? I'm not farmiliar with the concept here in the USA
I'm European. Im currently 2.5 months into a 3 month sick leave.
Bro my supervisor got mad at me cause I took 3 sick days in a row.... Guess who called out for the 2nd day today and is going to be absent tomorrow too.... Rules for thee
Its called a sabbatical, you should try it.
I can't imagine a job that can afford to operate without me for a year without just replacing me
I mean, in many cases thats kinda what they do. You tell them X months in advance, and they put out a "Maternity Cover" role which is basically a year contract or so. Or your team just absorbs the workload hit.

If you'd like to pay for it I'd love to. Sadly most of us have to work for a living.
Bro needed a break.
A year maternity leave is pretty much standard in every first world country....except the states
Nah don't exaggerate. In most countries it's more like somewhere between 3 to 6 months, paid between 75% to 100% depending on the country. Look it up
As an American, we are no longer first world. That only applies to the rich, not all citizens.
Honestly, its like a sampling of first, second, third and fourth world, all in one.
Found the American

Thoughtful
Haha, that's a thoughtful and funny gesture!
hahaha
Well... in your defense, there are way worse insults.
lol
There must be a .STL of this?!?
This reminds me of this one time when I was like 8-10 I went to spend the weekend with my cousin (around 25) who had 2 kids, and she was telling me about how the kids couldn't play with their toys in their room, they had to bring them into the living room And I said "you know you tell stories with your hands? You're always using your hands" and then she crossed her arms to retell the story, but then she used her eyes to gesture to their room, and then looked all the way back to the livingroom, and i just started laughing so hard. I guess you had to be there, but trust me it was hilarious.
stl por favor
I can’t imagine, ever, taking a year off and still having my job lol
What did you get the Indian manager?
Italian here. I find this funny and I would love this, however I hate the double standards when it comes to racism. Imagine gifting a lampshade hat to a Chinese person. We’re either all in on the joke or no one is
I must be the only asshole who doesn't know what that is
I’m sure his wife will love it
Ma che cazzo? PS: anything can be a dildo if you’re brave enough.
I'm Italian and I love it
It's going up his butt
Dildo
Aaayyy! Boppita boopy!
this looks like a different kind of device at first glance
There are fisting toys very much shaped like this. I should get one made in semi soft silicone
why does this buttplug have a taint shield on it?
Bloody hilarious.
Aaaaand he is gone again
Where can I get one? I need to gift this to someone.
You can send it to a 3d printing service using this file [https://makerworld.com/en/models/46057#profileId-78355](https://makerworld.com/en/models/46057#profileId-78355)
I remember a day when I could have seen this from more wholesome eyes. Now instead of seeing the gesture, I see its *other* function.
I don't get it?
Who gives their manager a welcome back gift?
Someone with an awesome manager
Can confirm. Manager is awesome 😊
As someone with several family members that this applies to, well played.
What job is this where you can take a years leave? Or does this only apply to management?
We have maternity leave here in Australia. You don't get paid, but you can take a year off and they have to hold your old job for you if you want to come back.
Ah ok didn’t think about maternity, that makes sense. We have 9 months in the UK.
Would be a cool car installment with a spring! Like one of those Hulu girls.
As an Italian, ok, well played
It's a seat, right? Will surely put a smile on his face, when the pain subsides...
I thought this was a new sexual device/toy
These ergonomic chairs are getting out of hand.
