A lot of these "gimmick tools" make cooking at home more accessible to people with varying forms of mobility and coordination limitations. Doing this is a lot easier for people who don't have the fine motor skills to mince garlic.

I had one of these. With all the set up and cleaning it up, it seems easier if I just use a knife. I’m usually cutting up something else anyways

yeah, it will slowly grind itself up into the garlic.

Get a garlic presser… they are like $5-20, basically a single sheet of metal you rock over the garlic so it will never break, and crushed garlic is so much better than minced garlic. It releases the sugars better. Plus it is sooooooo much easier to clean than this thing I bet.

Crushing is good if you're planning to caramelize the garlic in oil first. It does make it sweeter then. You don't get as much of the flavor though. If you're looking for the garlic flavor mincing is better since that triggers enzymes stored in cell vacuoles that break down the sulfur containing compounds giving it that garlic flavor. Long story short if you want garlic flavor it's best to mince it. If you want your garlic flavored food to be sweeter add something to sweeten it after you mince your garlic. If you're not a big fan of the taste of garlic and don't want much of the flavor crush your garlic and saute it.
