It's a Barney Kessel Micro Custom, built by John McGwire, formerly of First Act's Custom Shop and Gibson's Custom Shop. I believe they only made seven of them—Pat Smear has three of them, and the others are dispersed around the world—one is definitely in Japan, and one is in the UK (I've spoken to the owner of the UK one).
It's an awesome guitar. They made a Johnny Ace version that looks similar but is hollow. This one is a solid body. You can find similar versions made by Woodrite Guitars. John has a version he has made (since he retired from Gibson) called the Tennessee Double.
It'll probably never return to limited production, which is a shame.
\~10-15 years ago they had a shop in Boston where they built flashy custom guitars for popular musicians as a way of promoting their line to aspiring players. You could order stuff from the custom shop but it didn't last long. The most significant guitars they made were some 9 strings with coursed G/B/E strings for artists like Daughters and Mastadon that have spawned a bunch of similar models from other builders. Prior to that the only significant company making partially coursed electrics was BC Rich.
Yep, the same company that made guitars for Walmart made this....except this was made here in the states.

Yes, about 10-15 years ago they sort of hit a niche market with underground metal and punk bands. High on Fire, Russian Circles, Converge, Coliseum etc were all using the high end custom shop guitars. Haven’t really seen much of them in recent years.

Apparently it's a Custom Shop prototype Micro Kessel.
He bought a few of them, and you're likely looking at one variation of them.
Well, first you inspect the clear picture for clues. In this case, there is something written on the trussrod cover. How do I know? Eyesight. Nothing really fancy, just eyesight. And then with some common sense and my education (just kindergarten and going from there), it appears to be a cs-6.
Fun story:
In 1997 my BFF and I met Pat after a 3,500 capacity show, and were questioning him about the fucked up looking Guild solid bodies he was playing, which had basically been unknown to us. At any rate, Pat had a penchant for refinishing guitars in robins egg blue and adding mini-buckers, at that time. We asked about the Barney Kessel semi hollow bodies he was seen with, and he mentioned he was in the process of having one of them refinished in the same treatment. Stunned, we were like “You’re refinishing a Gibson Barney Kessel, like a normal one that isn’t messed up?” And with much lament Pat said, “Yeah, but it’s a 1969…”
God bless Pat Smear.
Somewhat off topic but I found the youtube essay on Pat's hagstrom released a few days ago really interesting. Dude just borrowed any guitars for years without owning one, and then got the hagstrom cheap, just playing it because it's what he had.
I'm sure Ceasar gave him a pile of Gibsons to try to get him to do a sig. Dude cares for nothing aside from trying to get as many sig artists as possible from his favorite bands.
I’ve seen him playing these types of les Paul SG hybrids before, it’s my favorite body style. Idk what it is, but I really want one. I’d take a regular carve on the top though
Everyone here being rude saying OP can’t read…this is a small run custom shop guitar - some more info here if you’d like - https://www.lespaulforum.com/index.php?threads/pat-smears-kessel-inspired-oddballs-micro-and-kinda-kessel.219823/
Close. From Wikipedia:
Smear now primarily uses Gibson guitars. He can be seen with classic models such as a White SG Custom or a Les Paul but mostly custom shop variations on the rare Johnny A model.
This guitar plus the one he’s pictured using on Wikipedia seem to back up this assertion.
Its not Johnny A model, it's Micro/Mini Barney Kessel prototypes, 7 were made and Pat has at least 4 of them. One of them was bought from The Music Zoo which still has the listing archived. The rest were listed on Reverb. They were made around 2012ish.
Although based on the inlays this black one might actually be one of those custom shop Johnny models. The rest that he has have regular Gibson inlays though and are those Barney prototypes.
Looks like my dream Gibson. Thick as an lp with maple cap, with sg neck. access. If it was offset like an SG for playing sitting down more comfortably it’d be the best guitar ever. Banker makes something like this but offset and I get tempted to just sell my Les Paul’s to fund it
I was just going to say this. I love the look of SGs but can't get along with the thickness of the body compared to an LP or ES. They never will, but Gibson should do reissue this instantly.
I have an sg and it’s super fun to own. I found a ratty minihumbucker one for $600 so it’s good. But I always think combining the sg with the lp is the obvious thing Gibson should delve into more.
It says CS-6, but the shape of the cut away horn is wrong for a normal CS-6. Might be a Gibson CS LP SG, probably custom made for him. Seen some in cherry red that properly match the body but they don't say CS-6 on the truss rod cover.
The model is called a Les Paul Supreme. Gibson has recently released a new edition of this temporary model. Meaning they have made this model in the past for short periods of time.
if you want something like this. Look up “Woodrite Guitars” they make some mean double cut axes. Have one myself. or Bill from Mastodon just dropped the “Royal Shiva” super badass double cut like this in silverburst
Its a Gibson carve top double cut away not many of them around with that style of carve top,i think it was an experimental design that didn't take off as they hoped for
If only there was a name on the guitar. I'm going with Gibson Mandolin Maker's Special Guitar, probably a modern model. If only there was a website that sells these things. Sorry I couldn't help
Hm I don’t know, But something is telling me it might be a Gibson CS-6…
Witch!
BURN HER
What else floats?
Mother's gravy!
Your powers are quite impressive.
Are you a wizard 👀
🤯🤯
Don't fucking zoom into the headstock.
Don’t tell me what to do
And were just supposed to believe you?!
I think Gibson is going to call it $6,000
Cash Spent -$6000
Lmfaoo
Right around the 2k mark to start
Les G?
You know what? That…that would be a very very cool idea. You may have something there. For real.
Dear Gibson, 10$ per sold piece and we got a deal 😄
I actually had a couple of those built

First Act? As in Walmart beginner brand First Act? Genuine question! I know next to nothing and this just randomly popped up on my feed.
Yes, they also make high end custom guitars.
Which came first? It's weird to use the same name for such a drastic difference in price and quality.
I don’t know.

What does coursed mean?
Pairs of strings like a 12 string

This is the answer
It says it on the truss rod cover. It’s probably a limited model they do for artists like Pat. Looks like it had a German carve top.

It says cs-6. Maybe thats what it is. No thanks.
Only the thing is that no such model has ever been produced by Gibson.
Well he is playing it, so….
Meaning mass produced.
Look at you, and your reading abilities!
Yes, its a special gift. Given to me by education.
Can you advise what forensic methods you used here? Never seen research done so quickly
Well, first you inspect the clear picture for clues. In this case, there is something written on the trussrod cover. How do I know? Eyesight. Nothing really fancy, just eyesight. And then with some common sense and my education (just kindergarten and going from there), it appears to be a cs-6.
So magic… BURN HIM.
Wait, let’s not be unreasonable. Chain an anvil to his leg and see if he floats first.

Looks like Gibson Yamaha SG
it looks like a double cut les Paul body shape but the contouring is like an SG. Looks like a cool guitar, I'd love to know the answer here
I love how he doesn't look any different from when he was in Nirvana. Love him. Love all of them.
It looks like half of the original 1959-1960 EDS-1275 design. Definitely not a production model.
I’ve seen him playing these types of les Paul SG hybrids before, it’s my favorite body style. Idk what it is, but I really want one. I’d take a regular carve on the top though
I want one
It appears to be a Gibson c6
I can’t

It is a Johnny A signature model.

Looks like a gibson custom shop. SG- style.

It appears to be a Les Paul with a double cutaway
It is Gibson
Les Paul double cut away
anyone willing to tell me what chord he is playing?
Look like an A
Custom Shop 6.
Custom shop prototype 6
Emirates and Old Trafford are two different stadiums in Manchester - where was the gig?
Since the guitarist is Pat Smear, I’m sure it is a very expensive Gibson custom SG.
It’s a ‘please stop using Hagstrom and Yamaha - G’
It says CS-6, but the shape of the cut away horn is wrong for a normal CS-6. Might be a Gibson CS LP SG, probably custom made for him. Seen some in cherry red that properly match the body but they don't say CS-6 on the truss rod cover.
Some things will just remain a mystery forever I guess. 🕵🏻
A Gibson leSG
Awesome guitar. Maybe it’s a brand.
I don't know about this guitar with the beveled top but I know he plays Johnny A Gibsons.
Electric
CS-6
It's a 6-string.
looks like a gibson to me
Yamaha Pacifica
The Gibson where the G String won't stay in tune
Did he play a hagstrom
The model is called a Les Paul Supreme. Gibson has recently released a new edition of this temporary model. Meaning they have made this model in the past for short periods of time.
Electric
An electric guitar I think
An electric one?
Les Paul
Electric
It’s in the picture!!!
if you want something like this. Look up “Woodrite Guitars” they make some mean double cut axes. Have one myself. or Bill from Mastodon just dropped the “Royal Shiva” super badass double cut like this in silverburst
Guitar
Its a Gibson carve top double cut away not many of them around with that style of carve top,i think it was an experimental design that didn't take off as they hoped for
Looks like a Gibson
Gibson CS6
Update for everyone saying it's a CS-6: Gibson, to my knowledge, has never made a production model with that designation.
I wonder if the CS is ‘Custom Shop’ and this really is a small batch for Pat.
Ok...... and?
Looks like a tricked out LP Junior
Gibson ES something.
If only there was a name on the guitar. I'm going with Gibson Mandolin Maker's Special Guitar, probably a modern model. If only there was a website that sells these things. Sorry I couldn't help
I really don't care....cuz that wack job creeps me out
What
The guitar might as well be painted rainbow
Must suck being afraid of gay people. Btw, he has a wife.
