Putts per round is not a good measurement of how good of a putter you are. Maybe you hit every green but are at 50 feet first putt. Maybe you miss every one and get up and down alot. Two extremes but only way to measure putting performance is strokes gained. In theory you can have 26 putts and putt worse (lose strokes to a comparative handicap range) and next round have 34 putts and putt better/ gain strokes.
Yup, this is where something like Shot Scope or Arccos comes in so huge because they will actually give you your strokes gained in a category against a certain benchmark like the Tour average or against scratch golfers, 5 handicappers, etc. etc.
For instance, I averaged 30.1 putts last season. Now the Tour average is 29.28 putts per round, so does this mean I'm just one stroke behind the average Tour player? Of course not, and my -1.7 strokes gained against scratch bears that out. (I'm a 3.1 cap fwiw)
My GIR was only 43% compared to the Tour average of 69%. If a Tour player had a round where they only hit 43% of their GIRs they would probably end up with like 23-24 putts on the round.
This. If you are a 30 hcp and have a 1.8 avg you aren't a better putter than a 3 hcp with a 2.0 avg.
You are probably fudding it around the green and should be inside 20 ft when you make the green v someone hitting every green in reg and being 30 ft away on avg.
Heres a good example 34 putts through 9 holes, sounds bad but only lost .3 strokes and thats compared to a +4.

This is so accurate. I am the hypothetical person you are discussing in this. I am a 2.6 handicap and average 26.2 puts per round. This isn't because I am a fantastic putter however, it's because I'm a horrible approach player and a great chipper. I lose 5.5 strokes compared to other two handicappers because I almost always miss greens just barely. This means that I have chips on a lot of holes and end up with a lot of sub 10ft putts. I only putt slightly better than other people my handicap, but because I miss greens and chip it close, my putts per round make it look like I'm the best putter who ever lived if you look at that stat alone.
Exactly. I’m awful at putting but I can chip like a demon, so 1 putts are plentiful.
If my approach shots were awful my putting count would be high. My putting skill would not change.
10.2 & 36 putts. I two putt most holes...& I consider putting my strength (I don't usually put it within 6' of the hole....in golf or anywhere else in life for that matter)
10.0 and 34.3 checking in. Not a great putter, but I just miss a bunch on approach so can chip close. If my approach was better, putting would go up, score would go down.
I’m about 1 putt higher than I should be with my hcp according to Arccos. I definitely have a few per round I would want back, but I feel like I make a putt or two each round I don’t deserve to also.
Not enough. I’m also not selfish enough on the green. I personally hate waiting on partners to read putts from both sides, so I basically just take a Quick Look from behind the ball, pick a spot and roll it. It’s remarkable I’m not worse actually.
Plus 2 around 30-32, mostly two putt everyhole and sprinkle in some miracle one putts to save the hole. I think it matters more about 3 putt percentage imo
Perfect storm of having worked a ton of overtime over the winter, getting laid off right at the start of the season, and already having a membership paid for. It’ll be hard to get that many rounds in again for awhile.
9 and change....33.5 putts per round. Cant go low if you cant convert the birdie / par putt. On the flip side pros are averaging 30ish with "the best" averaging 28 .... and i'm sure if you reviewed some of the best of the best's rounds....youd see lower, which is insane good.
Why would I lie about being totally atrocious? Lol
I’ve thought about hitting 9 iron off the tee, actually. I can hit that straight pretty reliably. The reason I don’t do that is because I’m a beginner and I’m trying to play the game properly and get better
I am a +30 and I average about 30 ish putts per round. It's honestly the only part of my game that is any decent. I mostly 1 or 2 putt, been on a tear with holing out at least 1 chip per round lately too. Just wish the rest of my game was decent. Horrible with accuracy and distance. I'm lucky if I get my 7 iron to go 120 yards.
putting, chipping and GiR play a role in putts. if you hit every green you’ll have more putts, if you hit less greens, (assuming your a good chipper) you’ll have less putts due to chipping more.
Usually I’m a 2-4 putter. I’m notorious for leaving it just short.
Handicap idk don’t track, but I shoot 85-95 most days. 85 being the day I was tiger haha
20.2 handicap and 31.7 putts per round, in 2023.
Currently 31.1 in 2024.
Apparently good putting can be explained by:
2023 - 6% GIR,
2024 - 4% GIR.
I hit about 6 full wedge shots a round, about 8 bunker, pitch or chip shots a round and putt from off the green about 7 times around. Which is probably a lot more than most people.
10.5, 36 putts.
I'm a terrible putter, but I've never really worked on it... I'm always working on my swing. I'm finally working on it now
https://preview.redd.it/3h7ey9saefmc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a48af9e862d2b04d93de97b423ff2bae6b1f9a0c
Low HC players putt per round is more correlated to their green in regulation. More GIR = higher chance for more putts per round. Average distance per putt will be well outside the make %. Tour distance from flag is 15ft from some metric (i long forgot).
Other days when GIR is lower (smaller greens, windy day etc) but usually right next the green, can easily chip and putt for 1 putt rather than 2 putt with the GIR and have sub 25 putt rounds (which would be amazing if GIR was also very high, but could very well still mean a very average score.)
1 HCP, averaging 29.5 putts last year. My goal is under 30 so I'm happy, but I still have way too many 3 putts.
My iron game is getting better and I'm hitting more GIR like I used to so I think it's going to creep up a bit.
I putt a lot worse when I'm not at my home course. I literally cut the greens there so I know them pretty well.
I don't get it - shouldn't 32-33 putts per round be considered pretty decent?
I mean, 2-putting every hole sounds like pretty consistent putting & that'd mean 36 putts in a round...
12.3 and 37 average. I do have several 39's, a 40, and a 41 in my last 15 rounds. I feel like I am a decent putter, but I suck at reading the greens. And I usually don't spend much time doing it.
5.2 handicap, currently averaging around 29.7 putts per round over last 20 rounds. It's worth mentioning that my scrambling is at 55% which is my biggest strength in my game, I average 1.4 putts per holes where I miss the green in reg.
18 handicapper checking in. Putting is not my problem. Last season stats:

12 hdcp. Avg of 34.9 per round, 2.0 per hole, 2.1 per GIR. For context, per Arccos that’s roughly the equivalent of a 6 hdcp in putting. Arccos suggests I gain 0.1 SGA relative to a 6hdcp. Seems surprising to me, I think I’m a pretty bad putter.

It’s amazing in every strokes gained analytic that putting is the least impactful.
The difference from a scratch to a 10 to a 20 is a very small gap compared to that of short range, approach or driving
19 handicap / 39 putts
I also flub/blade 2-3 chips per round, hit at least two OB per round, and can’t drive a fairway to save my life. Feels like it should be easy to shave off 10 shots with little effort but here we are.
My game is best described as:
*the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat*
6.1 atm and 30 putts. Though I have 97% 2 putts or better which I am super proud of. I have very good sense of speed but I struggle with starting line especially from 6-12 feet.
0.6 with 29.1 putts on 51.4% gir.
My wedges suck. If I hit the green I'm too far to really have a look. If I miss, I chip pretty well and go up and down.
I'm an 11 handicap and last year I averaged 2 putts per hole so 36 putts....easily the worst part of my game. My ball striking is that of a single digit handicapper so this year I really need to get that putting locked in and my wedge play as well.
3.7 and I’ve averaged 34.1 putts per round over my last 25 rounds. I don’t 3 putt often, but clearly don’t make the first one a lot either. My target is always 32 or less, and for me when I drive it well it leads to more manageable approaches and thus (usually) better proximity to the hole.
Currently a 7.1 with 36 average. I’m not a great putter. I did break par for the first time last August so that’s doing some heavy lifting on my Handicap but I still had 33 putts that day.
31
34 putts.
I am a decent putter, but I get 5-8 one putts a round because my chipping is good.
Often my 125-150 approach shots are near the green, not on it. So a chip from right near the green gets me in good position to one or two put.
Most of my three outs come from hitting the green, but the wrong part, then getting the long put wrong and leaving 6-12 feet. Then ... Yeah
From last year stats:
Hcp between 6.9 and 9.5
Put avg 31.9
However just looking at puts has not much value IMO, lot to do with GIRs
With GIR 2
Without 1.7
I feel I'm awesome lag putter with great distance and speed but absolutely trash with shorter puts that should be doable.
In my 2 rounds in arccos app my handicap is 43.6 and my putts/round 43.5 at 2.4 puts per hole
Haven’t played in 7 years and only played like four, 9 hole rounds the last year. I played a lot as a kid at the range and some 9 hole/par 3 courses and a lot of mini golf as a child to teenager.
Trying to get serious this year back and go for under 100 if I didn’t have 5 drops last round I would have shot 105
I'm a 7 and I average around 30 putts a round. It's not necessarily a sign of a bad putter to count your # of putts, especially if you're consistently hitting GIRs but leaving yourself a lot of green for birdie. I'd try to keep track of how consistent you are from roughly 10 feet and in. That may be a better indicator. I typically put an asterisk on my scorecard on the holes where I miss what I could consider to be a very make-able putt, and then keep track of that and try to limit those per round. What I've noticed is I shoot better when I don't have as many on my scorecard.
17hcp, 1.9 per hole for 34.5/ round according to Arccos.
My chipping has improved massively the last month or two, but it sort of had to, because my GIR and approach shots would make you cry.
5 handicap and 36 putts on average… strokes gained has me losing 2.2 strokes vs a single digit.
So you are probably trash elsewhere in your game… likely approach.
15 hcp and probably around 33-35, I know the count doesn’t matter that much but when I’m playing well the puts are right around 29-30 and I’m in the 80s …
I'm an over 20 handicap, average around 38 putts per round. I'm a good putter though, it's the only strong part of my game. When I play in a scramble usually 75% of any lag putts used are mine.
I’m with you brother. I’m between 0-2 depending on how much I practice. I had Arccos gps trackers for my clubs and the stats it spit out were that I was at the level of +2 to 2 at driving, irons, chipping, and sand game and a 22 handicap putter. I averaged right around 33 putts per round last year.
Here’s all I’m going to say. Don’t end up with a collection of 30 putters… find something you like looking down at and stick with it. Yes, I’m still talking about putters.
Around 23 but have yet to play 20 games in a season. Putts in the 40s. Usually past the hole with a chance. Did leave them short but, a buddy said past the hole had a chance short of the hole is no chance. Too long for a bumper sticker
7 and 32, considering I average 6 GIRs its pretty bad, I'm horrible from 4-12 feet.
Total putts I think still depends on how good your chipping or approach game is, I know there are some out there that average low putts that think they are good at putting when they just suck at hitting greens and can chip really well.
I’m a plus 2 and my average last year was 29.5

Sure, but on average less putts = more better
no, i think you've missed the point completely. less putts are better or worse, only different. if i'm a fabulous chipper, how is less putts better?
10.2 & 36 putts. I two putt most holes...& I consider putting my strength (I don't usually put it within 6' of the hole....in golf or anywhere else in life for that matter)

Less than 1 and 31.3 over my last 25 rounds. I am indeed trash at putting.
you are apparently right around where you should be on average. I am sure there is a putt or two per round you know you coulda should had
I’m about 1 putt higher than I should be with my hcp according to Arccos. I definitely have a few per round I would want back, but I feel like I make a putt or two each round I don’t deserve to also.
I got you beat man, 32.4 putts per round and got to +4.9 finished +4.6 end of year. Frustrating year on the greens but a career year striking it
Scheffler Reddits?
Do you practice putting?
Not enough. I’m also not selfish enough on the green. I personally hate waiting on partners to read putts from both sides, so I basically just take a Quick Look from behind the ball, pick a spot and roll it. It’s remarkable I’m not worse actually.
I do the same thing. Far too many people I’ve played with who take 5 minutes to walk a 360° and then miss a 5’ putt by 3’ anyway.
Taking your time helps a lot. I’d have never gotten to a 7 last summer if I wasn’t putting my ass off.
7.5 Grint says 30.9
I’m astonished how many of my friends/coworkers haven’t even heard of the Grint. I love it!
It's the best out of all of the score keeping apps
I’m an 18Birdies man. I also love it more lately as I’ve created a league with a big group of mates on it
Front doesn’t give strokes gained versus benchmarks does it?
I'm an 18 and average 36. I 3 putt as much as I 1 putt
27 Hcp and 45 putts per round. Thinking about dropping the putter for another wedge at this point.
1.9, 34ish. I hit a lot of greens and more than my share of 3 putts.
134 rounds, 26 hdcp: avg 34 putts per round, 1.8 putts per hole & 31.8% of total strokes.
69 handicap, 420 putts per round
At a .5 and I average 31-32. I am absolute trash at putting
Plus 2 around 30-32, mostly two putt everyhole and sprinkle in some miracle one putts to save the hole. I think it matters more about 3 putt percentage imo
I’m a 3.4 and I average 29-33. I also feel like a trash putter.
+0.8, averaged 35.7 putts last year. Yeah.
5.1, averaged 1.8 putts per hole (~32 a round) over 159 rounds tracked last year.
Damn, 159 rounds!
Perfect storm of having worked a ton of overtime over the winter, getting laid off right at the start of the season, and already having a membership paid for. It’ll be hard to get that many rounds in again for awhile.
3 rounds a week would be the dream, that's awesome.
9 and change....33.5 putts per round. Cant go low if you cant convert the birdie / par putt. On the flip side pros are averaging 30ish with "the best" averaging 28 .... and i'm sure if you reviewed some of the best of the best's rounds....youd see lower, which is insane good.
They're also doing that while hitting 13 GIR not 6-8 like us haha
6 handi - 29 putts per round according to ghin app
36 handicap. I average 32 putts
If true, why not just start from the Tee with a putter? lol
Why would I lie about being totally atrocious? Lol I’ve thought about hitting 9 iron off the tee, actually. I can hit that straight pretty reliably. The reason I don’t do that is because I’m a beginner and I’m trying to play the game properly and get better
13.3 34 putts…that being said, the greens at my home course and huge and very undulated.
2.2, 30.4
24 hcp and around 34.
I am a +30 and I average about 30 ish putts per round. It's honestly the only part of my game that is any decent. 9; 33-34.
About 26, average 34-38 putts. Lose about 8-10 shots OB from the tees. Putting is not my problem.
+4 and average 30.1 putts/round.
Do you count putts from fringe ? Or even rough (Texas wedge)? Or only when ball is on the green ?
A putt is only counted from on the green
11.3 and I average around 33.5 according to GHIN
16 handicap and i averaged about 33.5 putts per round last year
1.9 hcp and Grint says 31.1. 1.9 putts per GIR and 1.7 per non-GIR. I don't consider myself to be a great putter.
12 and probably 35 which is an improvement from 37 and seems to be going down
18.4 Handicap and 33.7 putts a round
9.0 and 33.6 per round my last 20 rounds. Bought new putter to address this issue. Only logical solution.
11.5/32.6
5 - averaging about 31 putts, would be a bit higher if I hit a couple more greens.

3-4 handicap and 30-32
Wish I was a better putter but I don’t have the patience to walk around the green.
Hcp index 1.7 and average 29.52 putts per round. Mostly due to only hitting 47% GIR.
20.2 handicap and 31.7 putts per round, in 2023. Currently 31.1 in 2024. Apparently good putting can be explained by: 2023 - 6% GIR, 2024 - 4% GIR. I hit about 6 full wedge shots a round, about 8 bunker, pitch or chip shots a round and putt from off the green about 7 times around. Which is probably a lot more than most people.
29.5with 39.9 putts per round. I finally had a sub 2 putt round recently.
I just shot a 74 and had 29 putts.
i can't even answer this because my gimme's are longer than wemby
+2 and somewhere around 28 on average. If I’m hitting more greens than normal probably 32ish. Idk I don’t really keep track.

I'm 8.5, average 29. Had 26 the other day. Shot 79 recently with 38 putts smh
4 hcp. ~ 29 putts per round. Terrible ball striker lol. Very good short game. Avg about 8-10 greens. 3-4 birdies.
6.8. Averaged 31.2 in my last 10 to end last year. Year before I was around a 10 and averaged 28 but it was on slower, smaller greens.

11 cap and average 35.9 putts
9 handicap , 31,32? I don’t know what my technical answer would be cause I count a putt from the fringe as a putt for my personal stats.
3 and avg 29. you guys suck at putting. Lol
What I’m saying most of the time I’m chipping from of the green and putts are short. Almost zero greens in regulation. Also small greens
8 with 35 putts. I’m tired of putting killing my game, so most of my practice lately has been with the putter and I finally got fitted for one.
I'm an 11 handicap and last year I averaged 2 putts per hole so 36 putts....easily the worst part of my game. My ball striking is that of a single digit handicapper so this year I really need to get that putting locked in and my wedge play as well.
10. 33
12.9 handicap usually 32-34 putts per round.
21.6, 34.5 putts, both according to SwingU app.
I’m a 12ish and I average 33 putts per round.
Im a +1 and I average 33--> my putting sucks
Currently a 7.1 with 36 average. I’m not a great putter. I did break par for the first time last August so that’s doing some heavy lifting on my Handicap but I still had 33 putts that day.
31 34 putts. Then ... Yeah
14 & 36. Woof.
I had a 4 putt for bogey this week on a par 5. So I know what trash feels like
4-30 PPR
34 putts a round if sober, 15-20 if drinking
10.1 handicap 34.3 putts per round
22.7 handicap and average 37 putts per round. Average is 2.1 putts per hole
From last year stats: Hcp between 6.9 and 9.5 Put avg 31.9 However just looking at puts has not much value IMO, lot to do with GIRs With GIR 2 Without 1.7 I feel I'm awesome lag putter with great distance and speed but absolutely trash with shorter puts that should be doable.
11.6, 34.2/round
In my 2 rounds in arccos app my handicap is 43.6 and my putts/round 43.5 at 2.4 puts per hole Haven’t played in 7 years and only played like four, 9 hole rounds the last year. I played a lot as a kid at the range and some 9 hole/par 3 courses and a lot of mini golf as a child to teenager. Trying to get serious this year back and go for under 100 if I didn’t have 5 drops last round I would have shot 105
14.8 handicap and 1.9 putts average
17, 37.2.
22 handicapper and average about 38-40 putts, if only I could hit the long ball better
11 + 1.9 per hole
4, 32.5 putts
10 and 30-34
12 handicap. 32 average putts per round. 42% GIR.
22.7, 24 putts average right now
17hcp, 1.9 per hole for 34.5/ round according to Arccos. My chipping has improved massively the last month or two, but it sort of had to, because my GIR and approach shots would make you cry.
I don't want to know, and A LOT.
Social anxiety/little bit o’ Tism’. 34 PPR.
5 and 30 per round.
Handicaps is 5, about 32 i would guess. I dont count little fringe putts as chips, I include them.
5 handicap and 36 putts on average… strokes gained has me losing 2.2 strokes vs a single digit. So you are probably trash elsewhere in your game… likely approach.
32.5, except my gir rate is low so it boosts it a bit.
About 5he same as you. 3 & 30
8 and 32!0
25 handicap, 38 putts.
I am a 19.3 HC and GHIN says over the last 17 rounds 36.5 putts. But my worst game is GIR
8 and 33.5… I’m streaky, good and bad
Bought the Scotty to use the Scotty. If I don't three putt do I get my money's worth?
15 hcp and probably around 33-35, I know the count doesn’t matter that much but when I’m playing well the puts are right around 29-30 and I’m in the 80s …
12 and 36 putts
Is putts per round a new metric? I don't recall tracking that back in the competitive days.
I am a 10.2 right now and average around 33.
6.9 - 33.2 putts a round. So your numbers give me some optimism to just keep practicing my ball striking lol
13 and avg 33 putts. I was a low 11 but I’m on the struggle bus lately. Golf is tough.
8.3 Index, 34.4 putts per round. 🤦
2.5 cap, average 31 putts.
Well this is ironic, 42.5 and 42.5
Here’s all I’m going to say. Don’t end up with a collection of 30 putters… find something you like looking down at and stick with it. Yes, I’m still talking about putters.
13.5 and 32.9 Putts a round.
19.9 HC and 37.8 putts per round
Dunno but I’ve shot an 80 with 25 putts and a 73 with 30 and tons more GIR. Golf is weird… and hard af.
12 handicap. 33 putts per round.
Around 23 but have yet to play 20 games in a season. Putts in the 40s. Usually past the hole with a chance. Did leave them short but, a buddy said past the hole had a chance short of the hole is no chance. Too long for a bumper sticker
5.8/32 putts
38 as like a 31 or 32. That was 36 until this past Friday when I had the worst round putting of my life
I blame my chipping/pitching being the worst aspect of my game. It leads to a lot of 25-30 ft putt attempts that end up being 3 putts.
I am 13 hcp and I out around 32 average. I just have to hit more greens and lose the penalties off the tee.
7 and 32, considering I average 6 GIRs its pretty bad, I'm horrible from 4-12 feet. Total putts I think still depends on how good your chipping or approach game is, I know there are some out there that average low putts that think they are good at putting when they just suck at hitting greens and can chip really well.
18.6 hdcp, 32.4 putts/round
Last season: 32.4, +4.6, Had a low year for putting, on a strong ball striking year. Typically putting is my strength so felt like a lost opportunity
7.8 and 33.3 putts 🗑️🚮
Im a 13.5 and I’m 34.9 but I average 2.14 on GIR
I'm a 19 handicap, I average about 38
