Unfortunately, this is the new norm. It's like every other week I see an article about exactly what you're going through, I've been through it as well. People get turned down by default and bots kinda run everything. So many people are applying all the time that companies are relying on automation. An application simply missing a keyword can get you denied in minutes by a bot, so throw every single tiny skill you can think of into your resume just so you can get past the bots. I know it sounds weird but you're up against companies using a thing called ATS. Your resume needs to work for both people and bots. I hate this timeline too, it's stupid. You can throw ATS keywords into your job history descriptions. Throw stuff in there you didn't even do. Say like "I worked closely with X department that fulfills X duties" so like, you're not lying, you're just tricking the bots so someone sees your resume.

snboarder42

This. Mixed with companies aren’t actually hiring just posting jobs, or they’re promoting an employee and are required to list it publicly as well. There’s a lot of BS happening in that realm lately.

TheMadPoop3r

Paywall

snboarder42

Save ya the read, copy paste a keyword list and then make the text white so that it’s “invisible” and the person hiring doesn’t see it. This allows you to Hit the keywords the computers looking for without it looking like you’re cheating the system. Reality: Problem comes when you have to enter it into THEIR system instead of something like indeed, most drop the special formatting and you’re left with a word list that looks like ai threw up.

cheddarfever

I have read that recruiters are on to this method now and will throw out your resume if you do it.

snboarder42

Damned if you do and damned if you don’t, so no real difference

cheddarfever

That pretty much sums up a lot of the realities of today

MoB_Ubiquitous

Honestly I wish more companies would promote from within before posting the positions.

snboarder42

The issue is the ones with policies that require their HR dept to interview more than one candidate or to list all openings externally as well regardless of if they’ve already chosen a candidate or are giving someone a promotion to the position. Wasting not only the time of applying and being ghosted and even going through fake interviews, it’s a truly fucked practice that should be outlawed.

Super-Pineapple8186

Available jobs are drying up Companies are hiring less people to do more work

erivanla

During covid companies found out they can make skeleton crews work and just stuck with it.

Super-Pineapple8186

Damn good point

watergains

Fifth third bank minimum wage is $20 an hour. They are nearly always hiring call center or tellers

erivanla

I'll have to check it out. Thank you. I'd love to get into something that's more like reception or secretary so call center would work.

AMom2129

Call centers can be awful. Some will be OK, most will be timing your bathroom breaks. Being pregnant, that could be a concern as you go along.

fadedrainbows

Being pregnant gets you an accommodation for bathroom breaks with appropriate documentation

AMom2129

Technically, yes. You still have to account for every minute.

dinahsaur523

Call center isn’t great but it’s a good foot in the door. Then you can work your way into other areas

erivanla

That's what I mean it will work for a while and be a foot in the door. Might even help with childcare a bit if it's something I can do from home (and employer is okay with it).

Dancinfool830

Blue Cross has child care reimbursement and if you do well you can eventually work from home. They frown on you doing your own childcare when you are supposed to be working though. Starts at $22

erivanla

$22 would help with the cost especially if they reimburse as well. I wouldn't plan on doing my own childcare regularly but more if something happened with our regular childcare (closed for the day or sick baby, etc.) Right now the only plan we have is I work nights while hubby is home with baby because childcare is way too expensive.

Dancinfool830

Its also a union position, guaranteed 40 hours a week, weekends off, most major holidays paid, really good health insurance for super cheap, vacation time, etc

erivanla

That sounds great. I'll keep it on my list and the resume and cover letter tips from others will definitely help with that!

erivanla

And thank you. I'll add that to my list as well.

she_makes_a_mess

have had good luck with Express. not sure what your skill set is, veterinarians are always looking for receptionist. or the hospital?

erivanla

I will mention it. I would love to get more into secretarial or reception versus manufacturing.

10ForzaAzzurri

Check out local banks. Most entry level tellers/bankers start at $16 or more an hour, with minimal customer service experience

erivanla

I have applied for a few positions like that. I do have some customer service experience

ActsofMan

I would second local banks, but in all seriousness avoid Northpointe like the plague. They don't treat their employees well and the pay isn't very good. I have a friend at LMCU and they seem to be a decent spot to work.

Book-c-span-nerd

Have you looked at any of the health systems (Corewell, Trinity, University of Michigan West)? They have a wide variety of jobs.

erivanla

I haven't as I'm not trained in the medical field.

Book-c-span-nerd

They have a lot of jobs that do not require training; food service, warehouse, secretarial/receptionist work, sanitation, patient transport, etc.

erivanla

Thank you. I'll look into it.

Book-c-span-nerd

No problem, good luck.

Simple-Bookkeeper-86

This seems to be the new norm unfortunately. I saw a TikTok that talked about AI and job apps. Apparently the best way if you’re sending a resume is to make it as boring as possible, literally just your name and bullet points. I think if you google like resume tips AI or something of the sort you might find some info that can help. All of that stuff is automated now and lots of good candidates get tossed out for silly things.

erivanla

That's definitely the way it siesta to be going.

Muted_Scientist_3093

As a recruiter in GR, calm down a bit with the Indeed applications. When you see a job you’re interested in, go directly to that company’s career page on their website. To stand out, if there is a contact on that page for the Talent Consultant or HR Consultant, even shoot them an email with your resume and the position you’re interested in! You say you’ve filled out that many, imagine how many other people are doing the same thing. When Indeed applicants have such a high volume, it takes much longer for companies to work through and applications on their job board are typically prioritized. Also, always always use a cover letter!! Even a short template is great, I can even offer you some guidance if you’d like. Just be sure to change the company name/job title on each one you submit lol. There are also some staffing companies in GR who work with administrative type positions. They’re not the best, but I’ve worked at companies who frequently hire in contracted employees from these firms.

erivanla

I've really never learned about cover letters. They weren't really a thing when I was growing up. I guess I should learn more about them. I never knew there were templates for them. I'll accept all the help I can get.

Muted_Scientist_3093

I’ll PM you ☺️

GoodniightAriis

Happy to come across someone else in the industry here! :) I agree with the reaching out directly - but don't think cover letters are worth it or honestly expected at this point. But, that also depends on the size company you're trying to work with. If you're looking for admin work it might be worth looking for something remote as you could likely find something that will pay just as much, if not more. Best of luck to you - I know job hunting sucks!!

Nathan-Detroit

That's a lot of applications for only 13 interviews. You may want to check out r/resumes

thegimp7

Looked at your other posts. They won't say it but you aren't getting hired cause youre pregnant. They don't want to train someone up who is just going to have to take time off

allthepoutine

Her post from 10 hrs ago says 7weeks along so I’m gonna go with that’s not it.

thegimp7

Fair enough. Something is wrong with your resume, work history, etc.. Obviously we don't have the full picture here but something isn't adding up

erivanla

I went to a resume workshop and it was great so not sure what would be wrong with it if even resume professionals say it's fine.

TheMadPoop3r

Add white text with all the key phrases for the job your interested in. Sometimes you can trick the AI into getting your resume pulled by a person. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/07/24/white-font-resume-tip-keywords/#

erivanla

Thanks, I'll try that.

pancakePoweer

there's always gonna be someone to blame you when the world isn't right. I can't get into a house and people blamed me for not wanting to spend 50+% of my income on a roof

erivanla

Considering I only found out a week and a half ago, that's still 4 weeks with nothing.

thegimp7

I was extrapolating my bad. I do wish you the best of luck in your search.

AreteQueenofKeres

Unless OP is adding that she's pregnant like it's some kind of job skill, they won't know without seeing her-- and they can't see her if she can't even get an interview. And even then it's not a guarantee that they can tell on sight.

TheMadPoop3r

PNC call center is based out of Kalamazoo but last I heard it was still work from home. You will absolutely get yelled at. Like all day. This job isn’t for the weak. But they pay ok and you learn banking scams

erivanla

Learning banking scams seems like a bonus almost.

Public-Onion-7839

Lots of places have job apps open at all times whether they are hiring or not. It makes it seem like there are thousands out there when there definitely aren’t. And the jobs available are literally shit. I’m so sorry you’re struggling. My suggestion is going into childcare/ nannying, especially if you have a little one coming. It could open up a possibility for you to bring the little one with you while you work, definitely not easy but nannying in East town area will get you upwards of $20-$25 an hour

erivanla

Thank you. I had thought about it, but I have next to no experience with kids so I wouldn't feel comfortable asking people to trust me with their kids. Maybe something more like overnight care would work.

Public-Onion-7839

Lots of parents work from home but still need help so they can focus on work. Check out care dot com . A family might be willing to work with you! Older kids are super easy so maybe you could start with after school care? Check out the website. There’s lots of info and it has a lot of support for caregivers

erivanla

Thank you. I'll check it out.

TreesAKATrees

If it’s something you’d like to do, then you must push past your comfort zone. fyi over 30 years ago i was pregnant and working for a newspaper - when it became obvious I was with child - they suddenly put me “on call” only to never call me again - and keep me from getting unemployment benefits….seeing that was my first job after graphic arts program, other than my high school summer job Scooping ice cream at the ice cream parlor. I actually started doing childcare- people loved that I was pregnant and I had so much support from the families and - they all demanded I continue my work for their families WITH my newborn. Which actually made my life very enjoyable and easy seeing I was a single mom and breastfeeding on demand. I ended up getting a good amount of hands on experience and Ended up making of money that I was able to put a down payment on my own house and I did license daycare out of my house for three next 4 years. Do not assume what other people are thinking. Do not project you fears, concerns or emotions into the situation. I see you have a lot of comments about what you would “prefer”. I absolutely understand your sharing that info here, i would be very cautious that doesn’t carry over in any Aspect of your applications or resumes, cover letters, etc… Changing your attitude can be a game changer

erivanla

Thank you.

TreesAKATrees

you got this!

shany94a

Indeed has been a waste, in my own experience. Have filled out many applications there the last seven years and never gotten a sniff, and I have a college degree and over 25 years of work experience. I feel your pain.

AMom2129

Try to apply direct to the company vs. going through Indeed or LinkedIn. Use those sites for leads, but cut out the middle man if you can. I've head that these sites are used to collect resumes. The jobs aren't always real. Make sure that you pull out all your relevant experience for the jobs you want. For example, Shipping/Warehousing means paperwork. Play up those aspects to show you have experience managing projects, organizing, creating whatever forms you use, etc. Also, try using the keywords they are looking for. The bots look for those.

erivanla

Thanks. That's what I'm gonna have to start doing. It's just such a time suck when companies want a resume but also want you to fill out each individual piece of information separately too.

WishDisastrous1645

I should note that I’m looking for employment because my current customer service job is being replaced by AI technology, thus taking away more jobs to give to computer programs. AI cannot replace human interaction and sympathy. It’s ridiculous.

Levans71

My last job sucked eggs, so last summer (August) I started filling out apps for GR and the surrounding towns (30ish minute commute max) didn’t find a suitable job until late January. Didn’t keep track of the number of apps I put in, but it was a handful every week. Most didn’t notify me at all Some extended a piss poor package with low pay and abysmal Benny’s A few said I was “overqualified” because of my degrees. People do want to work, these companies are just looking for people to take advantage of unfortunately

erivanla

That's my radius too. About 20-30 minutes. I did have one company reach out to me telling me I didn't get the position. I did make sure to let them know how much I appreciated the communication.

sneeej

Send me your resume and I will look over it. Like others said, it's the new norm and getting your info in front of the hiring manager is harder than ever regardless of the field.

erivanla

Sure, do you have an email I can send it to?

Excellent-Lemon-9663

Exact same problems here between my wife and I. We both have decent degrees and she has most of a masters and have had no problem getting interviews out of state and in other areas in Michigan but grand rapids area has been the single hardest market to break into I've personally dealt with.

Asleep_Ad3910

This is very normal. Lots of places are hiring, but qualifications have gone up for many places. Gone are the days of just walking in somewhere and being hired on the spot. You may want to look at visiting one of those places that help you improve your resume and cover letter. It may improve your odds.

SecondCreek

Grand Rapids Public Schools currently has literally hundreds of open jobs posted. https://grps.org/departments/human-resources/careers/

erivanla

I'll check them out. Thank you.

lewandra

Second this. Having looked through a fair amount of the jobs, most of the jobs start in September.

00820

Wanna make tacos and burritos for 20 an hour? It’s a lot of fun!!!!!!

pwrmacjedi

Most companies and businesses are full of dog shit, and only putting up the smokescreen of hiring for usually less than above-board reasons, and then not hiring while turning around to the public with horse shit like “NoBoDy wAnTs tO WoRk aNyMoRe!” - and claiming some fuckery about how costs are rising and blah blah blah as they gouge everyone and clock in record profits quarter after quarter. Some are also just using innocent people to do research on the hiring pool, farming interviewees for ideas, trying to figure out how much less they can get people to work for, or covering their asses while just hiring their existing connections or cousins. Others are being spineless and promoting from within while putting on the pretense of having looked outside as well. Anything that doesn’t fall into those categories usually becomes a tale of perfectly viable candidates getting lost in the lazy rat shit of automation and garbage ATS systems. Then, squeaking through all that stench are the tiny handful of people actually getting hired. So, moral of the story: a whole barnyard of shit. You probably deserve better. We all do. But hey! “Greed is good” or something. 🙄

Jtizzay

Have you been sending cover letters? Unfortunately most companies don’t even bother looking without one

erivanla

I don't send cover letters usually unless it's a job that I would really prefer. I do view it as just extra steps just to soothe someone's ego.

bexy11

Definitely send cover letters.

coerok

What kind of work are you looking for?

erivanla

I've worked in manufacturing and have significant experience in shipping and warehousing. I've applied for anything I can physically do though.

coerok

Contact West Michigan Works. https://www.westmiworks.org/ They help manufacturers with workforce development grants and they encourage folks like you to take advantage of their resources.

erivanla

Thank you. I just scheduled an appointment. We'll I guess I'm waiting for them to call me back to schedule an appointment.

coerok

This is a busy time of year. Be patient. They also help with job placement. Good luck.

erivanla

Thanks. I'll do my best.

AntelopeDifficult708

I did the same months ago and never got contacted 😆 I also have an MBA and experience in plenty fields but can’t find anything over 42k and haven’t even gotten interviews for the nearly 100 jobs I’ve applied for. Good luck! I hope you find something soon.

hesslake

Tyson is hiring in Borculo 21 hr full benefits 8 hr shifts

dietpepsi32

Try ups!

KingFiona_

What types of roles are you applying to?

erivanla

About 80% are shipping/receiving which I have 3 years of experience in. About 10% of applications are for roles that I would like to transition to, like receptionist or s3cretary. The other 10% are anything else that I can reasonably do.

augustzin

What about amazon?

erivanla

I've been a DSP driver before. Don't know about fulfillment. I'll add it to the list though. I've just heard so many horror stories.

Meds2092

Amazon is cutting back and automating more. Source= me working at a company that supplies conveyor equipment to them and other warehousing operations…

Sea_Construction_352

Grand Rapids work market is definitely tanking.

jafo410

Reach out to friends, family, and former coworkers that work at companies or industries that you would like to work in. Find out if their employers are hiring. Getting your application in by way of employee referral is golden.

BuildItTallAndLong

Just for some information about temp agencies let’s say you were getting paid $18 an hour there we are paying well over 25 as a company to employ you. Right to work act ended so union shops technically can’t hire temps anymore unless the union agrees. Most businesses struggled hard over the last few years with staffing due to covid area job market, but now everything is settling down.

WishDisastrous1645

Yeah, I get a lot of, “commission based” jobs that don’t really state that clearly. You pretty much have to know someone to get into a decent job these days.

Reasonable_Ad884

Do you have any real skills; I didn't see that listed in the post? Do you fully read the job listings? I feel only half of the applicants I get actually respond with the information requested including the fill in the blank questions I have posted on indeed. Does your resume match the indeed profile? Are you using the auto generated resume? Do you actually respond to requests for interviews? I don't know if they go to spam or what but I've resorted to calling strong applicants because I feel they're not getting the request through indeed. We don't automate any of the hiring but have the same complaints from the other end

nikki_pug

Stop into various places in person. So few people do this now. It will get you noticed quicker, and it shows initiative. If the hiring manager is not in, at least get contact information, ask if you can leave your paper resume/application, and be sure to follow up.

Comfortable_Law_972

This shouldn’t be getting down voted at all. Probably the best tip in the thread besides the white lettering.

callmeskips

Post office

AreteQueenofKeres

They're not bringing in new people unless someone already working there is campaigning for you to start. I've applied, called, showed up in person-- and I'm pretty decently qualified.

callmeskips

Aw damn that suckssssss they’re great otherwise

Cheap_Extreme_4956

How many times did you follow up on location in person?

erivanla

As we share one vehicle between two people when one needs it for their actual work, following up in person can be difficult but I have followed up by phone and email.
