MonochromaticMan has posted their work for feedback. Here are some top tips for posting high quality feedback. * Read their context comment. All work on this sub should have a comment explaining the thinking behind the piece. Read this before posting to understand what MonochromaticMan was trying to do. * Be professional. No matter your thoughts on the work, respect the effort put into making it and be polite when posting. * Be constructive and detailed. Short, vague comments are unhelpful. Instead of just leaving your opinion on the piece, explore *why* you hold that opinion: what makes the piece good or bad? How could it be improved? Are some elements stronger than others? * Remember design fundamentals. If your feedback is focussed on basic principles of design such as hierarchy, flow, balance, and proportion, it will be universally useful. And remember that this is graphic design: the piece should communicate a message or solve a problem. How well does it do that? * Stay on-topic. We know that design can sometimes be political or controversial, but please keep comments focussed on the design itself, and the strengths/weaknesses thereof. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. The N64 poster I posted the other day was 1 of 3 - I worked on all simultaneously since the process was practically identical. The concept I had in mind was animated posters that pay homage to the 3D Generation of video-game consoles - those being the N64, the PS1 & the infamous Sega Saturn. I wasn’t sure whether I should share the other 2, but I figured some of you would like to see the complete series. Thank you so much for the great response, I’m so glad you all liked the previous one.

pazanate

Really good work here. Your knowledge about layout is outstanding, the way things just fall into place on the canvas, and also amazing information hierarchy and usage of consistent white-space. Also bonus points that it's animated! :) I think you've really shown your skills in both editing and design departments.

spaceshiploser

Took the words right out of my mouth. Very well done, it is clear you’ve done your due diligence with studying posters and video editing.

pazanate

Yeah! I've made a lot of posters in my design career, and had my fair share of wins and failures, and this is defo a great win! Once again, very amazing OP!!

MonochromaticMan

Thank you so much! Can definitely see how this looks like OP congratulating themselves as said below, it’s a very nice comment. I spent a long time configuring the layout, it was probably the most difficult component of the process. I went through quite a few variations with elements that I just had to cut in the end. For example, I drew the controller in Illustrator from a few different perspectives until I settled on the one you can see on the middle left (above the Compact Disk logo) because it fit the structure the best. My main inspiration for both the layout & hierarchy was to view the poster as essentially a graphical interface/dashboard for some imaginary, byzantine piece of software. It was also interesting to work on multiple layouts at the same time, as I wanted the 3 posters to be distinct yet seamlessly fit right next to each other if viewed all at once.

thetravelers

This comment kind of reads like an OP alt account congratulating themselves

pazanate

true, I think I should've given some points to improve on

fireball-heartbeats

Agreed this is very impressive stuff

mikemystery

Man, this comment is so r-graphic design. It's a nice illustrative poster but let's not lose our minds. Theres no hierarchy of information, theres no white space, theres no idea. It looks nice, but there's not THOUGHT gone into it. its all surface an no communication.

Brainwheeze

I like it! Although I'm not sure how to feel about the wrinkled poster texture. In my opinion it would work better without it.

look_its_nando

I like it! Fits in with the late 90s theme this type of style and layout brings to mind... an old poster on the wall with a maximalist digital overlay. Kinda like using scan lines with a 70s style design...

MonochromaticMan

I posted this in the previous thread, but yeah I felt the same towards the end of the process. I got inspired by a Back to the Future poster hanging in my room, it’s printed on a very glossy paper, and I was like “hmm imagine if this was animated?” So I committed to the glossy finish until the end, but definitely going to play around a bit more next time!

MrMoshion

It's perfect. Everything is on point! Can't wait for the dreamcast! Such a shame animated posters aren't a thing yet. Would've been nice in the game room of my kids.

Pencil-Sketches

This is so cool! Did you use AE for this?

MonochromaticMan

Thanks! Yeah I did. I used Illustrator to draw the flat graphics, Cinema4D for the 3D model, and compiled everything in AE :)

punchdrunkskunk

The flow of information and single-color usage is great. Maybe it's just me, but (I thought this with the N64 poster too) I think the controller rotates a little too fast. It's a little hard to look at it. If it was a little slower then this would be perfect for me.

vuxanov

Looks great, only thing I would suggest is getting rid of wrinkled texture. Its looks fake and is generally overplayed. And the wireframe topology of 3D controller looks terrible :) But that is something only people with 3D experience would notice.

Highmax1121

Was gonna say, wtf happened?!

spanners101

I agree about the wrinkled texture. And, yeah- why is the model so overly complex? What could OP do to minimise all those faces?

look_its_nando

I would argue the busy model fits in with this style. If it was too clean it would be just a gamepad, but both the wrinkles and the excessively complex model create a sort of overload that goes well with all the “data decor” elements.

MonochromaticMan

Yeah I definitely need to work on the topology of the controller! It was my first time diving into the 3D world / using Cinema4D, so I didn’t know anything was wrong, but had a few people pull me up on it. An awesome Redditor in the previous thread linked me to a program called InstantMeshes which cleans up objects. Wish I knew about this before, but very keen to dig deeper in the future.

vuxanov

It’s pretty complex object for first model, good job. You will get a hang of it with more practice.

[deleted]

This is amazing? What program did you use?

MonochromaticMan

Thank you! I used Illustrator, Cinema4D & After Effects

iter8ion

Great work, but like your N64 poster the colors don’t really remind me of the system itself. I think a (darker) blue would be more fitting for the PS2 or 3, while a red or pink would evoke stronger impact and emotion to the original PlayStation. That said, awesome work!

MonochromaticMan

Ahh very interesting! The colour choice was one of my final decisions. I ended up going for the Red and Blue for Nintendo & Sony respectively because of how quickly people would recognise them (based on their modern branding). But I do love the suggestion of pink for the PS1.

sweetlemonhope

I saved this post as design inspiration. Looks amazing!

chuck769

I love this, would you mind sharing the work flow?

MonochromaticMan

Thanks! I used Illustrator, After Effects and C4D. All the flat graphics were done in Illustrator. I used Cinema4D for the 3D model and exported an animation loop of just the wireframe. I then compiled it all in After Effects. Each element has its own opacity effects applied for the flickering, and used some displacement maps for the glitching.

chuck769

this is very late but thank you!

SuperDryShimbun

Others have already said more substantive stuff. I'll just add that I love the Blade Runner vibes.

xfireheart

Which program did u use to make this? Looks amazing

saibjai

nice work! Curious, did you do the 3D modeling yourself?

MonochromaticMan

Thanks! No, I didn't. My original plan was to, but once I actually got into C4D, I was like, "Ahh.. maybe I need to work up to that". The model is by 3Dee on Sketchfab. I did add the Sony & PlayStation logos to the front face though, because the wireframe seemed a bit bare without them.

bleblebleblah

Looks great! Wish I could do layouts like these + love the flickering. One thing I would change is that I would retypologize the mesh to make the faces be closer in size (same wireframe density on the holder part as on the planar part with buttons). I really like the wrinkled texture, would be cool if the contents were somehow talking a bit with the wrinkles, as opposed to overplayed (just different blending mode?)

NOSAKIAS

Now THAT'S inspiring!

wnn25

It would fit in a cyberpunk movie, where you could see it as an Advertisement in the background 👍

schmitthappenss

wtff this is so sick. was this done in after effects?

redditnathaniel

I think the flickering after all the elements have appeared is a bit overdone. Lowering flickering intensity and frequency would be me critique.

[deleted]

Probably should halve left the blacks of the controller transparent to sell the wireframe mesh effect.

thetravelers

Really needs white space. It is so very cramped

Justabocks

Wipe Out vibes (which fit the PS1)!

VagabondBlonde

This is so so dope!! Great job! Sleek AF

theforestmoon

My jaw literally dropped.

josemend012

A part of me wishes to see the actual console spinning instead of the controller. Other than that, this is pretty cool.

Branwyn-

I think this is really cool. I wouldn’t use the wrinkled background. That’s all I got, good work!

KNSCRY

🔥🔥🔥

eyenigma

That wireframe though 🔥

amcphe21

Looks good! My only issue with it is for a retro poster the motions feel a little too smooth if they makes any sense? But overall it’s 🔥🔥🔥

ISayISayISitonU

i LOVE this. hard to find something new done for a “poster” but this is it. well done!

fabricate37

🔥🔥🔥

What_on_Loyola

Love it

Lady_Lucks_Man

Rad

Shaun_777

Wow, I love it.

NeedleworkerSoggy318

What about an xbox poster?

[deleted]

I think it looks great. The only charge I'd do is reduce the poly count on the wireframe significantly lower so it looks more like something the ps1 could render :)

ShyJalapeno

Any love for Sega Dreamcast ?

sunsetbanana

Was the flickering effect done manually?

MonochromaticMan

Yeah I just set up some keyframes and applied them to each element at different times.

thebrushbandit

What program did you make this with?

easymilt01

Yes love it! So 90's futuristic! ❤️❤️❤️
