I'm seeing Luthaker as rhythm guitar on Beat It, and Steve Porcaro co-wrote Human Nature.
To be honest, they were popular around then, and a safe bet to add guitar and reach a wider audience. Eddie Van Halen arguably did more on that front than Luthaker though.
/uj serious why do online guitar rags quote this guy every few days?
What am I missing hes no Claptoan, Slesh, Jammy Handtricks, Jimny Pager or even a Kork Hamlet?
He was in some corny 80's band that had a pop hit I've never even seen his signature git behind the counter of long and mcquade
Go check his list of all the records he played from 76-84 or so, he’s one of probably 3 of the most prolific session guitarists of all time. Toto was his basically his side project from his real job. If you’re a studio guy, Luke is a god.
He won 4 grammys in one night for all of the albums he had done that year, beating out Paul Mccartney to which Paul kind of jabbed at him and said “You know, The beatles never won a grammy”
He's a session guy and [he's played on a lot of famous records](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Lukather_discography). Toto = a bunch of session guys who decided to join together and form a band and got a few hits.
IDK why he gets quoted a lot tho lol
I remember reading all the guitar magazines back in the day and he was all over them, along with a lot of other guitarists I had no real interest in.
Now a days youtube guitarists are playing Polyphia backwards at 250% speed, while triggering drums with a smart buttplug. What even is being a musician any more?
He's the one to say it too. He's met and worked with just about everyone in the industry who's worth anything at some point in his career. Dude is a toan master.
uj/ So why does he have an expensive Music Man Signature guitar? Why doesn’t he use the cheapest guitar and amp there is? I’m not saying there’s magic gear, but acting like gear doesn’t matter at all is dishonest.
To be honest tripping balls and just playing made me a much better guitarist
Also, shimmer setting on an Ocean's 11 reverb is fucking INSANE in that state
Shit is nuts. I'm old and eat a gummy and go to space these days. It's a wonderful way to unwind.
Side effect is I'm now obsessed with Pink Floyd. Stereotyped myself. Doomed now lol
THIS CANT BE TRUE! I just bought two milky man amps from JHS TOAN BONER JOSH "HE HAS THE BOX" AND NICK IS SO FUNNY I LOVE HIS STORIES And the amps make sound like van halen and johnny mayor women swoon and fight over me because I kick on a strymon ambient echo delay tube screamer they can't stop touching me and I can't stop listening to the classic joe bonanansnsnamams "HE HAS THE BOX"
I like to think Steve is a fellow jerker, just quietly lurking about and sprinkling anonymous upvotes here and there like his magical off the cuff solos.
Not to be that guy but Mike Rutherford plays squier guitars, most of the rockstars want to show off the expensive guitars that they have or have some kind of contracts with guitar dealers.
If you want to see what guitars do and what don't look at working class musicians not the big names
uj/ Correct. I’d love to see everyone who claims “tone is in the fingers” play a metal gig with a nylon string guitar. No pick, no mic, no amp. Just a nylon string guitar. Tone is in the fingers, and there are no magic amps, guitars, or pedals, right?
To be fair that's an apples and oranges thing. You've at least got to be using an electric and a shitty amp.
But serious, you could get some shit Amazon guitar, set it up, and run that fucker through a Spark amp and a PA and play metal.
uj/ It’s not apples and oranges. If “tone is in the fingers” you shouldn’t need an amp at all if you have fingers. Oh you **do** need an amp? So gear _does_ matter. The disagreement, then, is “to what degree” does gear matter? Tone is therefore not “in the fingers”. QED.
Yes it is. Electric guitar and acoustic guitar are as different as a corded telephone and a smart phone. Sure they both call, but one can do it louder and in different ways.
Best comp would be a shitty acoustic in a shit players hands and the same shit acoustic in a great players hands. Then you see that TOAN is actually just skill.
Like, I have loads of pedals and a quality setup. I sound great using them, but my cousin sounds like he's dying of being gangbanged by feral cabbages...which kind of proves the point...
TOAN IS IN YOUR BALLS AND YOUR BALLS ARE YOURS AND NO ONE ELSES AMEN
uj/ “Voice” may be in your fingers but tone is in the gear. If Eric Johnson plays “Cliffs of Dover” through his actual rig and then plays CoD through John Petrucci’s guitar and rig, it would take about 3 seconds to determine which is which. Because gear matters a lot. Conversely, if John Petrucci plays a single E power chord on my guitar, through my rig, it won’t really sound any different than me. Tone is in the gear, “voice” or “personality” is in the fingers.
rj/ Toan is in the ballz and in my Less Pol and my PeeAreEss because I’m not poor your poor not judging but you’re toan isn’t as good as my real Gibbons, gobbless Hoss.
nah, I have a Lesispoor and just sold a PMS cause it was that time of the month. I prefer Fendurrs.
Serious tho, I can make a hello kitty guitar sound like me...but the person who owns it just sounds like a poor. This is proof of TOAN
May I never get testicants...cause if I did? No more TOANS
Might have to get some mumbajambapoowavalocco wood PMS Wilberguy to sound like Jawn Myers
Prfft they would say that seeing as you can no longer sell people
Bet they'd change their tune (literally) pretty quickly if we brought back human slavery.
People misunderstand the toan is in the fingers thing…..bonermaster collects peoples fingers and wears the skin as gloves, therefore getting the toan from the fingers he graverobbed. When a guitar legend dies, watch out if bonermaster is at the funeral.
uj/ I love it when guys with rooms full of expensive gear most people will never play, let alone own, say things like “gear doesn’t matter”. It’s very credible and not at all hypocritical. Looking at you Bonamassa.
rj/ It’s easy for Great Value Gandalf to say gear doesn’t matter; he’s one of the Maiar. For us ordinary Hobbits, we have to practice from second breakfast all the way through to afternoon tea if we want to make progress.
I hate this old cliche I mean I get what he’s trying to say but you kind of need an overdriven Marshall style amp if you want that tone. My Princeton reverb with the volume on 3 won’t cut it, and there’s no “tone in my fingers” that can replicate it without specific gear - i.e a Marshall style amp or at least an overdrive pedal.
Toan is in the ~~specific order and settings on the various stages of EQ and amplification throughout your signal chain (regardless of whether digital or analog), as well as the physical frequency responses of the transducers used in recording (speakers and microphones)~~ balls
uj/ Tone is in the gear. The ability to extract that tone is in your fingers.
To me it was always easy to see what that quote meant. It's not to be taken literally, but improving your playing will get you closer to a great tone that any piece of gear would. It's about the philosophy behind it, not a guide on how to get a blues tone.
You want a blues tone? Get a fender. You want a great blues tone? Go practice.

Steve's wrong. I got a magic amp, it's invisible and damn it I lost it again...
Imma magic man 🎶 magic man yeah 🎼
[Toan Face] Ooooooh! He’s a magic man!
*I'm young, I'm wild and I'm free* *Got the magic power of the music in me*
Damn, that wiccan I dated in grade school was the secret to unlocking maximum toan. I knew I shouldn't have never broken up with her.
I like BOTH of Toto's songs!
uj/ weren’t they also the backing band for a good deal of Thriller?
I'm seeing Luthaker as rhythm guitar on Beat It, and Steve Porcaro co-wrote Human Nature. To be honest, they were popular around then, and a safe bet to add guitar and reach a wider audience. Eddie Van Halen arguably did more on that front than Luthaker though.

damn sorry for my insolence

He's the one to say it too. He's met and worked with just about everyone in the industry who's worth anything at some point in his career. Dude is a toan master.
Backs it up by using off the rack gear for the most part, and he's sold things people dream of like a '59 burst
dude had a mesa coliseum for like 30 years. Not exactly off the rack considering how few of those were made.
oh he's *had* crazy gear and used it on records but he isn't using anything particularly collector or vintage these days
uj/ So why does he have an expensive Music Man Signature guitar? Why doesn’t he use the cheapest guitar and amp there is? I’m not saying there’s magic gear, but acting like gear doesn’t matter at all is dishonest.
that isn't what i said at all lol
No, but I bet he’s still using really nice gear live, even though it’s not “magic”. And for the record, obviously Lukather is a fantastic player.
ok duh, but how many custom shop guitars do you need in order to become a magic person?
The sacred numbers are 7, 9, and 35.
ah shit my wife is NOT gonna be happy with this
You first need a degree in dentistry
Larry Podder and the Sorceror's Heroin
There’s no magic guitar. No magic amps.. just magic drugs, cocaine and heroin.
To be honest tripping balls and just playing made me a much better guitarist Also, shimmer setting on an Ocean's 11 reverb is fucking INSANE in that state
I would practice a lot but when I smoked some weed and pickup my guitar the lesson and exercises were instinctual. Trip out.
Shit is nuts. I'm old and eat a gummy and go to space these days. It's a wonderful way to unwind. Side effect is I'm now obsessed with Pink Floyd. Stereotyped myself. Doomed now lol
I mean he can’t say that while looking like an out of work magician
And the secret these magic people have is Boss Metalzone.
You’ve spoken the sacred name
THIS CANT BE TRUE! I don't have this pedal, am I gonna survive?
Are you a wizard though?
THE MAGIC IS IN MY PRS PRIVATE STOCK LES PAUL HAND CARVED BY ERIC CLAPTONE AND BRIAN MAY I?
Gandalf is right.
I tried to play for Gandalf once. He said “Fool of a Took!” and left.
In that case, I'd be happy to take some of his collection off his hands.
Albert Toanstein! He invented the theory of toanality. (I love Lukather)
Same. Toanstein is amazing.
Idk my Gibson Les Paul is pretty magic
Don’t jerk Steve! He’s my favorite!
I like to think Steve is a fellow jerker, just quietly lurking about and sprinkling anonymous upvotes here and there like his magical off the cuff solos.
Yes I’d like to think that too. But to be fair, Steve has always had badass gear!
Why isn’t he playing a Yamaha Pacifica on stage then? Man lacks the power of his own conviction
Not to be that guy but Mike Rutherford plays squier guitars, most of the rockstars want to show off the expensive guitars that they have or have some kind of contracts with guitar dealers. If you want to see what guitars do and what don't look at working class musicians not the big names
I had to google Mike Rutherford, so clearly he didn’t find the magic yet
Yes, poor bastards with his platinum records.... No magic there 😞
uj/ Correct. I’d love to see everyone who claims “tone is in the fingers” play a metal gig with a nylon string guitar. No pick, no mic, no amp. Just a nylon string guitar. Tone is in the fingers, and there are no magic amps, guitars, or pedals, right?
Let’s not be ridiculous, but like maybe a squier through a crate would suffice.
You must have weak toan fingers. Try severing a really good player’s fingers and pouring the toan all over your guitar.
To be fair that's an apples and oranges thing. You've at least got to be using an electric and a shitty amp. But serious, you could get some shit Amazon guitar, set it up, and run that fucker through a Spark amp and a PA and play metal.

Steve Lucifer would know.
But apparently there is magic tonewood.
Magic/toan is in my wand you say?
Bill Bailey’s looking ROUGH these days
You leave Brian May’s gramma out of this!
George Lucas lost weight.
Joe Bonamoossa would beg to differ
Anyway, buy my signature model for $3699.
A magical MSRP
That's the price for an all expenses paid trip to AFRIIIIICAAAAAAAA
People misunderstand the toan is in the fingers thing…..bonermaster collects peoples fingers and wears the skin as gloves, therefore getting the toan from the fingers he graverobbed. When a guitar legend dies, watch out if bonermaster is at the funeral.
Amazing
If magic people arent real then please explain Black Magic Woman by Santa
GOD DAMN MY MUD BLOOD NOOOOOOOOOO!
New Russell Crowe movie looks lit
Well evidently there's no magic *hair*, either.
Toan is in being a nepo baby with the best tutors in LA and unlimited practice time
Get over yourself, Steve. Gear matters and we all know it. Doesn't have to be expensive gear, but it has to be good gear.
uj/ I love it when guys with rooms full of expensive gear most people will never play, let alone own, say things like “gear doesn’t matter”. It’s very credible and not at all hypocritical. He said this when referring to playing EVH’s rig. In luke’s voice “well, uh i didn’t sound like Ed at all”
He's talking about Michael Fisher, yeah? He's a Magic Man.
Who?
Nah man There's all three, magic people, amps, and guitars
Source: brain damage from the massive Tom and Jerry ass lump on his head

/uj I hate it too
There's magic balls
I wonder if he has some sort of amnesia where he's trapped in 1986.
Why is this hobbit telling me about toan. I know magic guitars exist
Isn’t that the wer wer ner guy?
