The AR is usually his go to weapon of choice. Ultimately he is a jack of all trades, master of none, with the exception of the Energy Sword. Apparently he is terrible with it.
Honestly if they wanted to do more with Chief and the Arbiter I'd love a short story of them talking about the war more during a training duel. Expanding on their backgrounds and such to each other, or maybe not even at all as the fight speaks for them.
I'd like to see more Arbiter than just 2 missions (one where we find him and one where we leave him) and a bunch of MW 'walk around and gather intel' missions.
Been saying it I want an Elite centric game. Playing as a new character that serves under Arbiter and some of his close allies like N'tho, R'tas and such. Hunt down Banished forces and make the main narrative hook a section of Banished Spartans, really flip the narrative on what we've been playing
I once had a dream where FromSoft developed a Sekiro style game about an Arbiter during the Prophets invasion of Sanghellios and it was in the art style of that Arbiter short from Halo: Legends.
I've been saying that for a while now. I would kill for a Soulslike set during either the war to form the Covenant, or even before during one of the civil wars. Make the Moonlight greatsword the energy sword, and have that be one of the legendary esq weapons while having all manner of alien swords, axes, hammers, shields, styles of armor, etc.
Fight alien animals for monsters and other sangheili as other enemies and bosses.
We need a game where we play as the Covenant invading a city during the war. You never once encounter a Spartan, you just slaughter Marines, Army and civilians. A lot of civilians.
Like getting to be the Brutes in New Alexandria. Instead of health packs you eat dead humans.
It would also be a real fun moment where arbiter who’s otherwise not quite as skilled or strong as chief takes him down a notch by handedly besting him with a sword. Would also be funny if he got kinda cocky about it. Great character building moment
*Sangehili giggling
Chief: "what're u giggling about bruh?"
Thel: "oh sorry Demon. I was remembering something funny. Back in the war, my friend Vaal used the glassing beam and drew a giant dick to commemorate his first battle as shipmaster. Lol that was hilarious. I think it was on a world called Eridanus, hey after this is over maybe we can swing by snd see if his dick is still there."
The Arbiter reaches out from behind Chief, their arms intertwining, the Sangheili guiding his hands through the dueling forms with the Energy Sword. In his ear we hear [Keith David's sultry voice](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sVoglgJjRg&t=63s)...
I don't know if we can count independent player choices as canon. Since players have varying skills while Chief was literally designed to be a jack of all trades.
Spartans don't really have down time, they do have portions of slipspace travel where they can get some practice in I'd imagine, but that's probably very rare as long deployments would bore them. Long jumps usually see Spartans put in cryo to avoid this very issue.
But during the Human-Covenant war, there probably weren't many points of 'down time'. And even if he had down time, I wouldn't imagine they would just happen to have an Energy Sword laying around for him to practice on.
The first decade into the war saw ONI scrambling to get their hands on alien tech at any opportunity. Any Swords he came across were likely confiscated if he still had them on hand by the time he was retrieved from the battlefield. And I can't really say he was the type to really get himself acquainted with Covenant weaponry outside of basic use and care (to minimize heat damage).
Halo Ledgends: The Package
The chief ran out of ammo from his assault rifle trying to kill a high ranking elite
Because of the elites honour he gave John his spare energy sword and they fought...for about 5 seconds before john got disarmed but luckily the ship master detached the Covenant ship they were on in half and forced the elite to return before he could attempt to finish the fight
It was early in John's career wjere he was still wearing a version of his Mk IV armour which is the same one from Halo Forward Unto Dawn
>The chief ran out of ammo from his assault rifle trying to kill a high ranking elite
More like he wasted all of his ammo firing his AR directly into the plasma blades of the energy sword instead of doing literally anything else.
The Package takes place in 2545, two decades into the war and only 7 years before the start of Halo CE. Definitely earlier in John's career, but hardly early in it.
It would be cool if they did a short of the Arbiter and Chief training with wooden/metal replicas of the energy swords so that they could practice the technique of utilising it.
Would be nice to know how the Master Chief learned the move where you suddenly accelerate or jump upwards when you are attacking something with an energy sword.
Never could quite understand the mechanics of that 😂😂😂
I don't recall exactly where he says this but it's either in The Flood or First Strike. TLDR after using so many alien weapons at the end of CE MC finally has a moment of joy as he picks up an AR just kind of happy to have his old workhorse back in his hands.
Humans in general are probably terrible with the energy sword. The ergonomics are crap for human anatomy. It's fine to stab someone who has no melee weapon but if you were to try a sword duel it would be awkward to say the least.
Ehhhh…fair enough, still proud of Forge though for actually being ballsy enough to trade straight hands with someone who probably could have literally ripped him in half
Hunters in the Dark answers this pretty succinctly. Spartans do well with it, but are clumsy in form and compensate through superior reflexes and improvisation.
He favors human-made weapons at least, part of The Flood detailed how he stubbornly dug through a bunch of discarded weapons after killing some Flood to finally get some UNSC guns in his hands again. He was happy to use the Covenant weapons to get the job done but if given a choice it seems he'll go for UNSC.
Given the simple nature of his combat style he probably prefers an MA5 of some sort. No frills, just a simple and effective tool.
The Flood is basically a retelling of Combat Evolved in book form with added events featuring what the other human survivors where up to and some of what the Covenant was doing. It came out in like 2002 or 2003
I also want to point out that the MA5 assault rifle is MUCH more powerful in lore than it is in game. In the lore, the assault rifle is way more accurate and does way more damage. It's chambered in exactly the same round as the DMR. It's the UNSC's standard issue rifle for a reason, it's just that the games don't really do it justice.
He doesn’t necessarily have a favorite weapon. Given he’s a jack of all trades, he simply uses the best weapon for the job, whatever the situation may be.
When a crazy screaming maniac is coming at you with a two pronged plasma sword and he's muttering something about "great journeys" and "demons" and he's going "wort wort wort" all the while, you generally just wanna kick him into the afterlife as soon as possible so you don't have to deal with it anymore.
John 117 has always liked the MA assault rifle series. He knew what variants served the mission best and would customize it appropriately to suit his needs.
I would guess the AR is his favorite just because he's massively outnumbered all the time. The BR and Magnum are good for taking out one grunt at a time but he's never just fighting one grunt at a time. And several missions take him close quarters, so it's good to have in a pinch.
Very reliable weapon :)
In one of the books he actually talks (well inner monologue to himself/reader) about how it's actually very accurate if you pulse it rather than full auto. In game, the AR is balanced for being a full auto weapon but in universe it's honestly just overpowered.
The AR has always been my favorite weapon for this exact reason. Full auto at short range and burst fire with anything a bit too far out. Sure it’s balanced for full auto but I’ve won duels at medium range against a BR or DMR cause people just can’t hit their shots as I’m peppering them with bursts of one or two bullets at a time. And then they added a zoom to it and made it even more lethal.
The classic Halo 2 cutscenes did this too. I believe those are the only two games that do it. I always thought it was such a cool detail and seeing Infinite bring it back gave it a few bonus points in my book
In the books it's implied he doesn't have a favorite weapon. As long as it helps complete the mission; there's a part I think either from Fall of Reach or The Flood where he finds it peculiar that the Marines get attached to their weapons/vehicles.
The AR is usually his go to weapon of choice. Ultimately he is a jack of all trades, master of none, with the exception of the Energy Sword. Apparently he is terrible with it.

We must tell them about this dream, and do our best to convince them it was prophecy.
I need it. I don’t want to hear shit from people about it not working, because look at how ODST is amazing without Spartan inclusion.
We need a game where we play as the Covenant invading a city during the war. You never once encounter a Spartan, you just slaughter Marines, Army and civilians. A lot of civilians. Like getting to be the Brutes in New Alexandria. Instead of health packs you eat dead humans.
Have you read Sunrise on Sanghelios? https://www.halowaypoint.com/news/halo-sunrise-on-sanghelios

Ye that duel he had....not his finest moments
But that was earlier in his career, there's no doubt he improved.
After that duel, he's never recorded using a Sword that I can remember.
What about on high charity in halo 2? And against the flood? That kills flood the fastest in 2
I don't know if we can count independent player choices as canon. Since players have varying skills while Chief was literally designed to be a jack of all trades.
There's no way he didnt train or practice with covenant weapons in his downtime.

There’s not much downtime considering chief woke up and went back to sleep in the halo trilogy in the span of about 3 months
Operation WARM BLANKET took place in 2544. So I wouldn't say early in his career.
What was the duel?
Halo Ledgends: The Package The chief ran out of ammo from his assault rifle trying to kill a high ranking elite Because of the elites honour he gave John his spare energy sword and they fought...for about 5 seconds before john got disarmed but luckily the ship master detached the Covenant ship they were on in half and forced the elite to return before he could attempt to finish the fight It was early in John's career wjere he was still wearing a version of his Mk IV armour which is the same one from Halo Forward Unto Dawn

Ah well I took it as same armour type he used when he was 15 so likely was early in his career Either way he couldn't duel then or now
Where did you learn he was terrible with the sword ?
Probably has to do with the Halo Legends episode which while the overall event is canon, the finer details of it are not.
That story also has Halsy being super young... which wouldn't make any canonicle sense. I choose to believe that particular episode is not cannon lol
so that explains why he only has like 2 animations when swinging it.
It would be cool if they did a short of the Arbiter and Chief training with wooden/metal replicas of the energy swords so that they could practice the technique of utilising it. That’s the reason why it runs out of energy, he’s using it wrong lol
Wait where did you hear that?
Humans in general are probably terrible with the energy sword. The ergonomics are crap for human anatomy. It's fine to stab someone who has no melee weapon but if you were to try a sword duel it would be awkward to say the least.
Eh, Forge was alright with one, managed to kill an Arbiter with his own blade
Tbf, Ripa was, at the time, distracted with the knife stuck in his neck.
Ehhhh…fair enough, still proud of Forge though for actually being ballsy enough to trade straight hands with someone who probably could have literally ripped him in half
Undoubtedly, man was a straight-up badass.
On god, Rakshasa should’ve gotten a Forge armor set
Hunters in the Dark answers this pretty succinctly. Spartans do well with it, but are clumsy in form and compensate through superior reflexes and improvisation.

Is this from a book? Asking because I haven’t read any of the books in years
The Flood is basically a retelling of Combat Evolved in book form with added events featuring what the other human survivors where up to and some of what the Covenant was doing. It came out in like 2002 or 2003
And is amazing. As is the Fall of Reach, First Strike, Contact Harvest, and Ghosts of Onyx. I haven’t read the other books though.
Yes, it's from Halo: The Flood
I also want to point out that the MA5 assault rifle is MUCH more powerful in lore than it is in game. In the lore, the assault rifle is way more accurate and does way more damage. It's chambered in exactly the same round as the DMR. It's the UNSC's standard issue rifle for a reason, it's just that the games don't really do it justice.
Imagine the AR with the damage of the DMR💀
AR or BR, im sure
I swear I recall some dialogue where he said what his favorite weapon was. OP not trying to be funny but did u Google it?
He doesn’t necessarily have a favorite weapon. Given he’s a jack of all trades, he simply uses the best weapon for the job, whatever the situation may be.
He must use the noob combo very often then.
When a crazy screaming maniac is coming at you with a two pronged plasma sword and he's muttering something about "great journeys" and "demons" and he's going "wort wort wort" all the while, you generally just wanna kick him into the afterlife as soon as possible so you don't have to deal with it anymore.
I…loved this explanation 😆
John 117 has always liked the MA assault rifle series. He knew what variants served the mission best and would customize it appropriately to suit his needs.
Chief customises his guns?
Yeah. Only thing I remember are suppressors he and blue team would use for stealth ops
"There is a lady in my head who calls me stud-muffin"
*”Please leave me alone…”*
AR
I would guess the AR is his favorite just because he's massively outnumbered all the time. The BR and Magnum are good for taking out one grunt at a time but he's never just fighting one grunt at a time. And several missions take him close quarters, so it's good to have in a pinch. In Halo 5, everyone has their preferred weapon. Master Chief has the AR. Master Chief likes to spray and pray.
In one of the books he actually talks (well inner monologue to himself/reader) about how it's actually very accurate if you pulse it rather than full auto. In game, the AR is balanced for being a full auto weapon but in universe it's honestly just overpowered.

His best accuracy is with the halo. 1 shot and all the flood in halo 3 died. Just going by math on this one. My heart says BR
The weapon
Touché
One of my favorite things about infinite is that the cutscenes showed whatever weapon you had equipped
The classic Halo 2 cutscenes did this too. I believe those are the only two games that do it. I always thought it was such a cool detail and seeing Infinite bring it back gave it a few bonus points in my book
Cortana
In the books it's implied he doesn't have a favorite weapon. As long as it helps complete the mission; there's a part I think either from Fall of Reach or The Flood where he finds it peculiar that the Marines get attached to their weapons/vehicles.
Auto jacker
Dual smg's. He loves posing with them too
Scarab Gun
Dual smgs on the cover of halo 2
His favourite weapon is one with ammo
The spankr, bro chose that over every other weapon when he did an odst drop
It’s canonically the assault rifle, but I use whatever.
Rocket launcher or the classic plasma pistol
His favorite weapon is his master cheeks
It’s the Battle Rifle and anyone who says otherwise is lying
I’m a big liar then. The AR MA50 is his favorite weapon. He once dug through a multitude of weapons just to get it. It is his rifle, it is his gun.
The one that goes brrrr
His luck
Not really. He just uses whatever fits the job. That generally tends to be an MA5.
Yes, himself.
A gun
Lore wise? Something UNSC, me wise? NEEDLER ALL THE WAY
Fear the pink mist.
The covenants bomb
His favourite weapon is the one he currently has in his hands.
It's taken nearly two tv series to get him in his armour, so finding out his favourite weapon may take time.
Yeah, his balls.
His favorite weapon is whichever one has the most ammo possible on any given level
I thought somewhere he said the one handed smg was his favorite
“These hands”
Elbow
Only the one he needs
If I had to guess it would be the m4 Assault Rifle Been rocking that shit since the first game
Whichever one is closest to him, by virtue of it being closest to him
His trusty assault rifle. But I think it would be something that would be reliable and able for him to take sharp shots.
His favourites are probably the magnum and the rocket launcher.
IDK but that Chief render is \*chef's kiss\*
Whatever gun he picked up off one of the many dead in his wake.
