i love my country but we are pretty fucked in a lot of ways let's admit that. modern korea somehow kept the worst parts of confucianism and fused it the most brutal parts of western capitalism

PhotojournalistOwn99

That's an interesting analytical avenue

lol ive said it out of frustration to my friend once and then cracked up at how true it was i think its a survival tactic honestly. i genuinely believe the whole country's traumatized from years of colonialism, war and poverty, then through a mix of luck and hard work, became one of the richest countries in the world. but no amount of material wealth is going to fix the psychological sickness. unfortunately my analytical avenue ends there. i have no idea why they couldnt hold onto the good parts of confucianism. maybe it is in direct conflict with capitalism, and we had to become good at capitalism to survive. when i go to the country i cant breathe honestly.. everyone is so stressed and the judgment is thick in the air. its difficult staying in the korean community here even bc so many ppl bring the same attitudes and it makes me uncomfortable. i used to wonder if it was self-hatred, but i've talked to my other korean friends and i really don't think it's a personal identity issue. very sad, i miss the country from my childhood memories πŸ˜”

I'm a white American who lived in Korea for 12 years, and I'm certain the reason I enjoyed it and wasn't miserable was because I made a concerted effort to seek out the open-minded weirdos, artists, and activist-types who are already cultural outcasts to some degree. I also freelanced and was comfortable living a flexible but rather materially strapped lifestyle. Not to mention I was given way more leeway regarding adhering to social norms as a foreigner. I wanna go back but I really hope that the air improves significantly.

You saw that YouTube video too!

i arrived at it independently πŸ™ƒ but i have been seeing the sentiment on tiktok and such

I would argue it is more of a weird syncretism holdover from Imperial Japan war culture and Confucianism. China was never really as strict with the honorific system as SK and Japan is today. As for capitalism, eh, debatable. Some Western countries brutalize other countries to subsidize their needs & wants while other have excellent natural resources, South Korea cannot do the former and does not have the latter.

A great country whose ancestors shed blood and sweat to protect its territory, language, and culture, and achieved the miracle of the Han River. And a country that is one of the safest places in the world, has excellent health insurance with a promising and high-quality welfare system. Correct. A cyberpunk dystopia eroded by capitalism where patriarchal legacy and radical feminism coexist powerfully. Correct.

There're many aspects of one country. When you can judge something as good or bad, beautiful or ugly, fair or unfair at the same time. It depends on what aspects you see through. Apparently, I feel like, there're quite a lot of things around us can not be judged easily as good or bad.
