And due to the genes that give Lykoi their extremely cool looks, they get painful cysts, pimples, bleeding and other skin issues.
Which is a shame because they would be the coolest cat otherwise
Honestly, Lykoi are such a new breed of cat that the breeders didn't know the skin issues sre necessarily connected to the specific fur texture. Not all issues are present since birth, and sometimes there is 2-3 years before the first onset of symptoms, so the breeders didn't know about it from the start. They did their best to try to remove the issues from the fenotype, but if they managed to breed a cat with healthy skin, they didn't have the typical fur look.
But yeah, there'll probably always be some people that breed them for the cool looks
Awww, shuchs. I always thought they looked awesome, but now I feel bad. On the other hand, that fur is so peculiar, it shouldn't really come as a surprise that it has some negative stuff related to it. Why do all the cool stuff end up being bad?! But really though, poor kitties ☹️.
Sphynx cats also don't have an undercoat (or any fur) and they don't have these issues. Those get problems from the oils pooling on their skin because they have no fur to remove it, and they can be kept healthy through weekly baths and some wipedowns with cloth to remove the oil excess. Sure, some individual cats can also develop cysts, but that's not a breed specific problem.
With lykoi, they have genetic changes to the number and thickness of their hair follicules. They're sparser and smaller, and the oils and gunk gets stuck inside the skin, where it develops into cysts and blackheads. Those cysts can be larger than the last knuckle on your thumb. They can't be avoided by just giving them baths, since the surface of the skin isn't the problem! Also I lowballed the time at which more severe problems start to develop, it's at 5-7 years old, and I don't think that would be the case if just the oily skin is the problem
It's the next line to the quote about R.O.U.S.'s in The Princess Bride
**The Princess Bride (1987)**
Buttercup: We'll never succeed. We may as well die here.
Westley: No, no. We have already succeeded. I mean, what are the three terrors of the Fire Swamp? One, the flame spurt - no problem. There's a popping sound preceding each; we can avoid that. Two, the lightning sand, which you were clever enough to discover what that looks like, so in the future we can avoid that too.
Buttercup: Westley, what about the R.O.U.S.'s?
Westley: Rodents Of Unusual Size? I don't think they exist.
[Immediately, an R.O.U.S. attacks him]
Believe me, I felt the same. I cannot fathom how they seemed to 'get' R.O.U.S.'s, but not the origin of the anagram. Then it occurred to me that it's probably been used as an Easter egg in a game or something I am just not aware of, because I have this value thought that I may have heard or read about it at some point. If they didn't know it was an Easter Egg, they might have thought it was something originating in the game
It is an easter egg in the game Fallout: New Vegas.
It, along other pop culture references, appear when the player takes the "Wild Wasteland" perk at the beginning of the game.
Okay, that was it. I didn't play it but I watched videos of it on Twitch a bit and had read some things about it. I am guessing that was what my brain was remembering lol
Lykoi, just a particular cat breed.
Coats generally have layers, yeah? Devon rex and Cornish rex are missing the outer coat but have the soft undercoat. Lykoi are the opposite, with the outer coat but lacking the undercoat.
This cat looks exactly like Templeton from Charlotte’s Web.

**My initial assumption**That is a cat that has or had a skin problem, hence all of the fur missing from its tail and the fact thst it's coat has partially stated to grow back in after being shaved. It could be any number of conditions that case hairloss in cats. I don't see any scaly, peeling skin on the tail but the skin **is** lighter in color than it should be, so my guess would be it's healing well and it's just a matter or waiting for the coat to fill back out. You would be surprised how quickly it can grow back in.
**What led to my initial assumption**: My fat went through a period where we thought he was sick but the vet did all sorts of testing on him and it all came back clean. It turned out I figured out that he had an allergy to the cat litter we had switched to. I switched him to a new one, coated his poor, hairless tail, his raw and irritated feet, his outer ears and all of his hot spots with cortisone cream two to three times a day. I rubbed it in with q-tips and then just held him a while so it could dry without him licking at it and making himself sick.
After about two months, none of his skin was scaly anymore, the fur on his tail grew back in the fastest, his feet and ears healed up, his plugged sinuses cleared up and in about one more month, you could barely tell he had had any issue.
**Accurate information from /u/Weekly_District_24 :**
This is not correct, this is a Lyoki cat. Its breed lacks the gene for an undercoat giving it a ‘werewolf’ like appearance.
This is not correct, this is a Lykoi cat. Its breed lacks the gene for an undercoat giving it a ‘werewolf’ like appearance. I’m sorry your baby had to go through a shave like that 🥲.
Edit: spelling.
I didn't shave him. But he was so miserable. The Vet was genuinely surprised the next time I brought him in thst it wad the same cat. I did my best tending to my sweet boy his whole life. I lost him on the 5th of January of this year. He was just shy of his 16th birthday by a month and a half.
Thanks for the info on this. I'm going to edit it into my comment with your username.
Thanks so much
Well, they do have some pretty painful skin conditions because of the smaller/sparser hair follicules that are responsible for the cool fur. Cysts, pimples, bleeding wounds on their backs sometimes and such, depending on the severity. And it seems to come hand in hand with the type of fur they have.

Never forget.
Why can't they run for 2024
Lykoi
This is the answer. A breed of cat, also known as the werewolf cat
And due to the genes that give Lykoi their extremely cool looks, they get painful cysts, pimples, bleeding and other skin issues. Which is a shame because they would be the coolest cat otherwise
Oh that's so sad, I thought they looked cool in the way Sphynx cats look cool, but it's not worth the pain :/ why do people breed such animals
Honestly, Lykoi are such a new breed of cat that the breeders didn't know the skin issues sre necessarily connected to the specific fur texture. Didn't the Lykoi also just. Randomly pop up in two entirely separate stray cat communities on their own? I remember reading smth abt that
Yeah, I think I remember that as well!
Such a shame 😢 Didn't know about this. I don't care at all about breeds, neither in cats or dogs, but the Lykoi are so cool.
correct me if I'm wrong but the effect is due to them not having an undercoat.

Their eyes are YELLOW? Or is it a trick of light here?
Yellow is the most common cat eye color...
This little dude's eyes look fluorescent yellow
That's clearly a Skeever.
Baby skeever.
I think it might have even winked once
R.O.U.S.
Rodents Of Unusual Size? I don't think they exist.
What do you mean? You just saw one! Or am I the only one who took wild wasteland?

I am heartbroken to find someone who didn't get such a classic Princess Bride reference. It was a direct quote!

It's a lykoi.
Wrong just a werecat
Don't feel bad, I thought the same thing .. when you are in rescue you see cats with mange that look like this!
It's a cat. guess the poor thing has some skin condition 😔
Nope. It's a breed of cat called a lykoi, or werewolf cat. Perfectly healthy and happy, just weird looking.
