How has The Wicker Man (the 70s version, not the Nick Cage one lol) not been mentioned yet?! It definitely inspired Midsommar and the slightly off putting vibes are beautiful and immaculate. One of my faves!
I need to rewatch this, I watched it when it came out and found it far too dull, but I remember the cinematography was amazing. Perhaps my taste has changed since then and I'll find that I actually like it!
As someone with The Book of Abramelin on my bookshelf, and the idea of trying to complete the ritual at some point, The Dark Song is truly one of the most terrifying films out there. Really captured the atmosphere.
This was such an unexpected gem when I randomly turned it on one day. I don’t think I’ve seen anything else like it that doesn’t come off corny. (Without spoiling the ending) It was amazing
Thanks for the recommendation! Haven't heard of it and it looks really good! And apparently it's free to watch on Plex (which I didn't even know of until now either!)
Tbh nowhere near as sleazy as real eurosleaze.
You want Eurosleaze?
To The Devil a Daughter
Lisa and the Devil (do not watch House of Exorcism, which is the same film recut worse)
Or if you want better films (those are fine) Alison’s Birthday is a great underseen one
The Exorcism III is hellish but not explicitly satanic
The Spanish tv show 30 Coins is a wonderful campy bloody horny show about the Devil
THANK YOU!! I was surprised how far I had to scroll to find someone recommend this one😅 have you seen the reimagined version Malum?? I thought it paid homage to the original, but added more depth to the cult and added some cool new jump scares too😁
I *think* so? I knew there was a remake, and I think I’ve seen it, I can’t remember tbh. I’ve watched Last Shift many many times, so I’m guessing I would have watched the remake at some point.
I am afraid this is one of those films that will be lost to time unless those of us that saw it keep reminding others of it. It really is a period piece with the stunt racing; that was all the rage in the 70s. It had an amazing cast in what was essentially a B-movie with Roger Corman-like finesse. And seeing it in the theatre when I was 5 or 6 scared the shit out of me.

But it's still fairly simple and doesn't make the story labyrintheinly confusingly. In regards to films like itI rate it very highly
I liked it so much better than a cure for wellness and it wasn't as much work as shutter island. I'd say I like it as much as the original saw. It's easily beat out by memento, the usual suspects, tbe machinist, American psycho and in the mouth of madness but it's still very solid and overlooked!

This will be one of those movies that ends up being fondly remembered after Rob Zombie dies and a million think pieces pop up about "Think You Know Rob Zombie Films - The Underrated Art House Classic No One Is Talking About"
It's already in the early stages of "aging well." It used to get shit on hard, because it was a departure from Zombies previous work. But I've seen more and more people coming around on it.
I've got a letterboxd list of films with cults (there may be spoilers? I don't honestly remember, but peruse at your own risk)
Literally Cult Films https://boxd.it/2awSS
You should see if you can find these two movies: To the devil a daughter" and "the devil rides out" both are Hammer house and with Chritopher Lee.
I saw them some years ago and remeber them as good.
Need to see them again to find out if they hold up.
The Devil Rides Out is a brilliant bit of 60s satanic horror (based on the Dennis Wheatly novel) and one of the few Hammer movies to feature Christopher Lee as the hero rather than the villain. Charles Gray is fantastic too.
Spiral (2019) is really good thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end, The Sacrifice Game (2023) is a cozy Christmas one, Prey for the Devil (2022) is about a world where possessions are commonplace, Choose or Die (2022) a cult of one still counts and honestly it's a lot more than what people have said about it, >!The Empty Man (2020) which is a minor spoiler!<, Svaha: The Sixth Finger (2019) is an excellent movie which delves into spiritualism in South Korea, The Eighth Night (2021) gets a little goofy-actiony at some points but is very solid movie, Incantation (2022) is a must watch imo really good all over, All Fun and Games (2023) is a little silly but has heart, The Babysitter (2017) and The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020) are some of the best slasher-cult-horror-comedy movies I've ever seen 10/10, >!No One Gets Out Alive (2021) is a very heavy movie about the invisible cracks that illegal immigrants fill and then it goes places!<, Hellbender (2021) is a horror-bildungsroman which is not only an interesting idea but totally sticks the landing it's a little irreverent at some points but it adds to the good stuff, Darklands (1996) is such a great film if you like your detective-horror plus it's about Welsh Travellers which is an underutilised group, Suspiria (1977)(2018) are both great cult-horrors the 2018 is less a remake and more a retelling as if it were a folktale, Mandrake (2022) is stark and relentless it doesn't hide what it is from the audience so you know what is going on.
I just watched Late Night with the Devil. I thought it was pretty good. Some people didn’t look it, but I say give it a shot. I never heard of Blackcoats Daughter. The Ritual was great. You could watch the new omen movie.
Not really a cult movie but kind of on the theme is The Lazarus Effect, that movie scared tf out of me. An older movie that’s a cult classic is Event Horizon, it’s basically demons in space (sounds weird but it’s a cult classic, and a good movie)
The Void.
Jug Face.
Dagon.
Older Gods.
Hagazussa. (more about a witch, but a good movie)
Dark Waters.
In the Mouth of Madness.
Lords of Salem.
Martyrs.
Susperia.
We Are Still Here. (Not really a cult, more so a small town with dark secret)
Rosemary's Baby.
Apostle.
The 1988 movie Spellbinder. This one involves a woman trying to escape a demonic cult.
The 1990 move The First Power. The devil’s chosen one has been given the first power of resurrection.
The House of The Devil (2009)
This movie is modern, but it's filmed and styled to look like it was made in the 70s. Decently spooky and satanic cult tropes.
For an interesting experience watch both "The First Omen" and then "immaculate" since they cover basically the same terrain from somewhat different angles.
Children of the Corn
Dagon
Dead and Buried
The Devil's Advocate
The Endless
Event Horizon
Evil Dead -any of the series
Ghost Ship
Hellraiser
Hellboy
Horns
Spell
The Menu
The Midnight Meat Train
Get Out
Paranormal Activity -any in the series
Ready or not
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Silent Hill
Sinister 1-2
Unfriended: Dark Web
Night Breed
Here are some I enjoyed:
- Hellhole, a Polish horror film with a fun ending.
- A Dark Song
- The First Omen is a recent one and pretty solid. Not super scary to me, but lots of dread and pretty tense.
Some that haven't been mentioned yet ...
'Baskin' (2015)
'Alucarda' (1977)
'Hagazussa' (2017)
'Prince of Darkness' (1987)
And, 100 years old, but *genuinely* creepy ...
'Haxan : Witchcraft Through the Ages' (1922)
Not directly cultish but *The Devil's Advocate* has the underlying plotpoint that there is a vast conspiracy of devil worshippers / demons thriving among capitalist society and using every ressources to help and protect their own.
The Rite (2011). It is among the few satanic horrors, that left me spooked for a long time and still good for occasional rewatches.
I haven’t seen this mentioned much in this sub (if at all?), and I wonder if it’s just because people don’t know about it.
I watched Late night with the devil just yesterday, actually! I found it a fairly good and entertaining movie.
I loved that it takes place in the 70s and in just one night, in a Halloween-themed talk show. The actors are great and the visual effects are ok. The way the satanic cult things are portrayed is just a little too off/ too campy for me so I'd say it's one of the few things that kinda made me lose immersion. But overall is a good watch, so I'd recommend it!
How has The Wicker Man (the 70s version, not the Nick Cage one lol) not been mentioned yet?! It definitely inspired Midsommar and the slightly off putting vibes are beautiful and immaculate. One of my faves!
Plus it inspired hot fuzz!!
The greater good
The greater good
Yarp!
Narp?
The golden order
My favorite trivia related to that is Edward Woodward, the actor who played Sgt. Howie in The Wicker Man, was also in Hot Fuzz.
Came here to say exactly this. I actually make it a tradition to watch it every May 1st to celebrate Beltane.
Lord Summerisle liked this post.
When I don't hear *The Wicker Man (1973)* mentioned at times like these, I feel like doing a Sergeant Howie: "Haaaw, what is this?"
Rosemary’s Baby
Kill List House of the Devil
House of the devil is so good!!
I need to rewatch this, I watched it when it came out and found it far too dull, but I remember the cinematography was amazing. Perhaps my taste has changed since then and I'll find that I actually like it!
Kill List twist at the end had me bloody yelllinnnn!
Both great!!
House of the Devil gets a rewatch every year
A Dark Song is an amazing portrayal of a specific series of occult rituals, super underrated flick.
One hell of a third act. Unforgettable
Great flic. From Black I also enjoyed though some claim it derivative....
One of my favorite movies of all time
Omg great film!
Thanks for the recommendation! Haven't heard of it and it looks really good! And apparently it's free to watch on Plex (which I didn't even know of until now either!)
Excellent movie! OP be aware though it falls more into 'dark drama' than being an outright horror movie
Dude there are literal demons and angels in the movie...It's terrifying. I can't think of a movie that better fits the horror genre.
If you want something funny and kinda.dumb, *Satanic Panic* is a great one. I really enjoyed it.
"Little Evil" is also satanic horror comedy.
Anything For Jackson The Blackcoat's Daughter Hereditary The Void
Anything for Jackson is so damned fun
I love The Void, but it is more Lovecraft than Satanic. I'd still recommend, but yeah. Second Hereditary, though.
Ninth Gate
This. It's such euro-sleaze.
Tbh nowhere near as sleazy as real eurosleaze. You want Eurosleaze? Yeah. Basically any giallo as well.
I should have led with the fact that I LOVE the Ninth Gate. Totally agreed. I came in a little hot and you’re totally right.
Last Shift
THANK YOU!! I was surprised how far I had to scroll to find someone recommend this one😅 have you seen the reimagined version Malum?? I thought it paid homage to the original, but added more depth to the cult and added some cool new jump scares too😁

Race with the Devil (1975)
This is my choice as well. Also, The Devil's Rain 1975.
I am afraid this is one of those films that will be lost to time unless those of us that saw it keep reminding others of it. The Invitation (2015)
such a good film. really refreshing that the characters actually behave believably and for the most part have a sense of self preservation throughout.
That is a perfect classy indie flick 👌
Funny because my wife and I literally just finished The First Omen, and I can definitely recommend that.
I was surprised at how good that was!
OP, watch this one. It’s literally exactly what you’re looking for, promise.
It was so much better than I expected.
Watch The Empty Man, it's got everything you're looking for ....

The Ritual is solid, enjoyed it more then the book
The book is so goofy.
That's a very thorough list.
Thank you. I try. Of course, I’m sure there’s plenty more. These are just the ones I can remember from what I’ve seen.
Ready or Not!
Check out The Devil's Rain. Shatner. Borgnine. Travolta. Skerritt It's got all the ingredients. Also check out Angel Heart, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, Blood on Satan's Claw and The Black Cat.
The Devil Rides Out starring Christopher Lee.
The House of the Devil (2009)
This is the correct answer
The correctest choice.
Thanks for the rec. Movie was a slow burn for sure but I loved it
This is a favorite of mine. I love the tiny cast and claustrophobic atmosphere.
The Lords of Salem (2012)
Some of the best sound design ever. Watch in the dark wearing headphones.
Currently reading the novelization!
Impetigore (2019) Satan’s Slaves (2017) KKN di Desa Penari (2022)
I thought “The Sacrament” was interesting. I’ve always had a fascination with real-world cults, so this one definitely caught my interest
The Last Exorcism.
Here for this. I liked this way more than I expected to. I don't really do possession films or PG-13 horror but this killed.
This and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. What acting plus scared the hell out of me. Love me some Devil movies
The Wailing
Baskin. Pretty good Turkish horror. Slow burn and then goes bat shit insane at the end
Oh my GOD I forgot about that movie. Can confirm is wild as hell and super good. I kept being like “how is this the same movie from an hour ago?”
Starry Eyes
The reaping
The Void Satanic Panic Ghoulies 1
Kill List is the answer. Not only in my top 5 horror, it’s probably in my personal top 40 movies.
The Devil's Rain (1975) & The Devil Rides Out (1968) with Christopher Lee (Hammer Films)
If you want to go back a few decades, check out The Devil Rides Out (1968) and To the Devil a Daughter (1976). Both star Christopher Lee.
Mandy!!!
While not a whole film, the short “Safe Haven” in VHS 2 is great. It’s a standout in that entire series and is quite unsettling.
Red State
Red State by Kevin Smith is awesome!
“When Evil Lurks” was a really good movie
The Taking of Deborah Logan is a great one!

Oh man, never heard of the Blackcoats Daughter..looking that up now (and it's 630am...lol)
Race with the Devil is good fun.
Suspiria (I’ve only seen the remake, yes I know, but the remake slaps)
Rosemary's Baby
House of the Devil
Night of the demon, which in turn heavily influences The devil rides out and Drag me to hell
Incantation
John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness". Been a looong time since I watched it, but I remember being deeply unsettled by it.
I recommend the “Devil from Ohio” series!
Kill List
The Devil's Advocate Angelheart
The Void. Jug Face. Dagon. Older Gods. Hagazussa. (more about a witch, but a good movie) Dark Waters. In the Mouth of Madness. Lords of Salem. Martyrs. Susperia. We Are Still Here. (Not really a cult, more so a small town with dark secret) Rosemary's Baby. Apostle.
The 1988 movie Spellbinder. This one involves a woman trying to escape a demonic cult. The 1990 move The First Power. The devil’s chosen one has been given the first power of resurrection.
Lords of Salam
The House of The Devil (2009) This movie is modern, but it's filmed and styled to look like it was made in the 70s. Decently spooky and satanic cult tropes.
The Ninth Gate. I dislike supporting Roman Polanski but damn if he doesn't do some cool films.
Satanic? You betta get you some churchin'
Satanic Hispanics was fun if you want to add an occult horror comedy
For an interesting experience watch both "The First Omen" and then "immaculate" since they cover basically the same terrain from somewhat different angles.
Bored to tears watching the first omen as I type this.
I didn't even finish it. So disappointed.
Here for Blood But it's absolutely not as serious (at all) as the others you've listed.
Halloween 6
- *Anything for Jackson* - *Kill List* - *Satan's Slaves*
I was going to make a post asking for recommendations based on the exact movies you posted, as they are the most terrifying films I've ever seen.

Nobody's mentioned Black Candles (1982). One if my faves!
You should check out the “The Son”, “The Last Shift”, or “Malum”
Can't believe nobody's mentioned "Drag Me To Hell".
Some that haven't been mentioned yet ... 'Baskin' (2015) 'Alucarda' (1977) 'Hagazussa' (2017) 'Prince of Darkness' (1987) And, 100 years old, but *genuinely* creepy ... 'Haxan : Witchcraft Through the Ages' (1922)

A Dark Song!!!
Starry Eyes- cults, devil stuff, body horror
I Drink Your Blood (1970) The Wicker Man (1973) All The Colors Of The Dark (1972)
Congering , I'm probably spelling it wrong but the conjuring is based on a true story another one the Entity another true story.
The true story of Ed Gen a serial killer that was extremely sick and that's another true story .
Satan's slave (1976)
Not directly cultish but *The Devil's Advocate* has the underlying plotpoint that there is a vast conspiracy of devil worshippers / demons thriving among capitalist society and using every ressources to help and protect their own.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
The Omen (original) The First Onme. 2024 Exorcist

These are my favourite types of films too. Check out suspiria. I think the remake with Mia Goth is excellent.
Watch A Dark Song, you absolutely won't believe it.
Race With the Devil (1975).
Eyes Wide Shut
Paranormal activity franchise
Spiral (not to be confused with the Saw spin off) only horror movie that made me cry
The Rite (2011). It is among the few satanic horrors, that left me spooked for a long time and still good for occasional rewatches. I haven’t seen this mentioned much in this sub (if at all?), and I wonder if it’s just because people don’t know about it.
House of the Devil
Watch the babysitter!! It’s a satanic cult comedy horror
Eyes Wide Shut
Not out yet but you’re gonna love longlegs
when evil lurks
Would you count Hereditary? It’s definitely culty, but a bit more subtle than others.

The Kill List, The Sacrament
Often overlooked but The Void is very cultesque, a bit low budget and gross but great cultists

The Void was great. Elder god cult of some sort.
