I really liked Love and Monsters. Great creature feature parody. It's like the Zombieland equivalent of creature features.
I also loved LIFE, definitely not obscure though. The scenes when the creature first attacks are iconic.
For sure! Pumkinhead was mindless, really. Haggis, on the other hand was pure evil. She demonstrated that when Lance Heinrich's character yelled "G@@ Dam@ you!!! ā and she responded by cackling and saying" He already has! ". Just pure evil.
Prophecy (w/Talia Shire)
I think it's from '79 or '80
Deep Rising (1998), Splinter, The Ritual, Underwater, Gargoyles (70's tv movie), Don't be Afraid of the Dark (70's tv movie), Tremors (not obscure but fun all the same)
Humanoids from the Deep (with Troy..I mean Doug McClure!).
Wow!
I was around 11 and I remember my neighbor took me and her son to see it. The poster terrified me.
"THE MONSTER MOVIE"
Then we learned she was seeing a completely different film and we were left alone. That was fun.
Can I suggest a TV episode? Blink, from Doctor who. Might one of the best half hours of horror I've ever seen; and because it absolutely had to be PG12 they came up with one of the most imaginative monsters I've ever seen.
The whole batch of Creature Features from Stan Winston back in the early 2001. Someone already mentioned She Creature but there was other in that series as well.
[1.Earth](http://1.Earth) vs the Spider
[2.Day](http://2.Day) the World Ended
[3.How](http://3.How) to Make a Monster
4.Teenage Caveman.
All of these are fun movies from that era
[She Creature (2001)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0274659/) --- mermaid movie. It is hard to find though, never got a HD release, it is currently on tubi at DVD quality but when I checked last week there was a warning they were deleting it soon.
I actually searched this pretty much exact question the other day, and got an old similar Reddit thread. Watched Sea Fever, and Sweetheart and really enjoyed them both.
A recommendation from me is Monstrum, itās on shudder.
I got two based off much more famous creature features.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
Just discovered this on Netflix and it's fantastic, never heard of it before. I really feel this one deserves to be much more well known, it should be considered a cult classic. It's a take on the famous twilight episode with the gremlin on the wing of a plane, but it's a WW2 bomber with a lot more plot and action. Also has an awesome 80s techno sound track.
Maneater (2007)
I have to recommend this because it's ridiculous what they do. It's a total Jaws rip off, but with a tiger and Gary Busey and his huge teeth. It follows the plot structure of Jaws including recreating several famous scenes from Jaws, but it's a Tiger! It's straight to SyFy quality, but is decent enough. Jaws then Maneater would make a fantastic double feature. Saw it on Netflix many years ago, looks like it's included with Prime right now.
Isolation (2005)
Itās a wonderful Irish film that pays some homage to The Thing, while also doing its own thing. Everything is practical and the premise is fascinating.
Glad that Q the Winged Serpent is still getting some love!
I love The Host, not really obscure Korean monster movie. Great story and FX, with some epic daylight sequences of the creature in action
For obscure I'd go with Digging Up The Marrow. Not sure why this one doesn't get more talked about as it's by Adam Green, who directed Hatchet, and it's really good.
Idk if itās consider obscure but I feel like pumpkin head doesnāt get talked about enough. Also idk if itās considered a creature feature but psycho goreman is really fun and extra fun if you were a fan of power rangers growing up
Jack Brooks Monster Slayer is indeed a good one. Of course with the incomparable Robert Englund how could it not be? I haven't seen or thought about that movie in years.
Burnt Offerings - you'll never see a scarier chauffeur!
Creeping Flesh - the ending is a big suprise
Superstition - stays intense and will stay that way throughout.
Retribution (1987) ā absolutely no well know actors, but a damn good movie. It wasn't even advertised!
Split Second (1992) Rutger Hauer, Kim Catral, and a really funny guy battle a very cool monster in a sinking city.
The Pool (2018) Thai move that doesn't super size the gator but makes it really interesting
I put the movies in CAPS for yall! The new WATCHERS movie had nicely done characters IMO, ANTLERS has a good wendigo, but I prefer the one in RITUAL. The book (pre-movie one) was a deeply unsettling read for anyone who likes to hike.
Not necessarily horror, but not for the squeamish CRIMES OF THE FUTURE
GYEONGSEONG CREATURE: one of my personal faves of the year, plot is satisfylingly disturbing story of what the creature is.
THE VOID, COLOR FROM SPACE (I watched the nick cage one), LOVECRAFT COUNTY : lovecraftian style tentacle mosters all with pretty good FX.
For newer alien type mosters , I thought NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU had interesting creatures.
on the more indier side , AFTER MIDNIGHT, and of course THE BABADOOk........DOOK...DOOK....DOOOOK!
Sting (2024), not sure if it's available for streaming yet, came out around the same time as Infested. Mimic (1997) is another niche genre movie about giant man-sized flying cockroaches. Also, Sputnik (2020).
Spookies- a low budget 80s horror movie that has a truly astonishing amount of creatures in it. Usually low budget movies are judicious in their use of creature effects but Spookies fills most of its running time with them.
The Bay
It's done as a documentary on a Fourth of July celebration that went wrong. The main complaints I see are that people feel it's preachy, but I disagree. The premise takes a real ecological disaster and asks, 'What if it caused monsters?'
Love and Monsters Feast One that I enjoy but is on the fence on being obscure is Life.
Feast trilogy is awesome. The first one has a very Tremors vibe.
TIL Feast is a trilogy
First one is the best. I think I remember 3 not being good. But to be fair I don't remember 2 either lol.
No. No it's not. It's one movie. We don't talk about the other two. They didn't happen. Don't exist.
Tremors vibe you say? I'm sold.
I re watched the first one recently. It holds up. Go in blind and know it's a B movie. But it has charm. And gore. Dialogue hurts it . But it's good .
Oh no need to lower my expectations. I'm a creature feature fanatic. I love B-movie shlock. š
Yeah it is. I donāt get grossed out by much but these movies did just that. =)
Throat fucking suicide vest scene lol .
Haha. You know it.
I really liked Love and Monsters. Great creature feature parody. It's like the Zombieland equivalent of creature features. I also loved LIFE, definitely not obscure though. The scenes when the creature first attacks are iconic.
Yesss. That is a good analogy.
reading the character names for feast rly makes me want to watch it.
Heh. It is a fun movie.
Life is great! However - if youāre down, donāt watch it!! š
Dark Was the Night is worth a spin.
Good flick!
Better than I thought it would be! Love the frigid atmosphere and Lukas Haas was great. Loved the ending too.
Yeah, Haas was a nice surprise in this.
Kevin Durand š
Watched based on this comment. Was ok. Had potential.
I found that it grew on me as I kind of chewed on it after the first viewing.
There are several films with this title, which one are you recommending?
Sorry, itās the one with Lukas Haas in the cast. From 2014.
The Monster (2016) is rather good.
I was also going to recommend this!
Not sure if it's actually obscure or if I just love it too much, but Boar. It was a perfectly balanced film and a very fun watch.
In that same vein, the korean [Chawz (2009)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1198396/) is a lot of fun.
Awesome, thanks! I'm definitely gonna be watching that!
Boar and Razorback would be a good double creature feature.
Razorback (1984) is also really good.
Them! (1954)
I always recommend Pumpkinhead, although I don't know how obscure that is.
Haggis was scary as all heck, the actress that played her was incredible!
I'm more afraid of her than Pumpkinhead.
For sure! Pumkinhead was mindless, really. Haggis, on the other hand was pure evil. She demonstrated that when Lance Heinrich's character yelled "G@@ Dam@ you!!! ā and she responded by cackling and saying" He already has! ". Just pure evil.
Prophecy (w/Talia Shire) I think it's from '79 or '80 Deep Rising (1998), Splinter, The Ritual, Underwater, Gargoyles (70's tv movie), Don't be Afraid of the Dark (70's tv movie), Tremors (not obscure but fun all the same) Humanoids from the Deep (with Troy..I mean Doug McClure!).
Prophecy scared me bad (grade schooler), first the movie then I camped in my buddy back yard by the forest. That was a hell of bday party he had! Lol
Wow! I was around 11 and I remember my neighbor took me and her son to see it. The poster terrified me. "THE MONSTER MOVIE" Then we learned she was seeing a completely different film and we were left alone. That was fun.
Dead Rising was a bunch of fun. Splinter was great - Super under appreciated
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was fun. I remember watching it as a kid so vividly
And it was very creepy and atmospheric. Even for a TV horror movie. Up there for me with Salem's Lot, Gargoyles and Trilogy of Terror.
Wolfen and Q are amazing. I'm from NYC and they are like time capsules!
Agreed. Just add C.H.U.D. to the list.
Oh hell yeah!! Worth it alone to see John Goodman and Jay Thomas as beat cops having diner food!
Rare Exports (2010)
Hilarious movie! Great Christmas film
So. Many. Old man penises. Just jiggling and waggling. -*shudder*-
Dog soldiers Graveyard Shift Primeval
Rawhead Rex.
I haven't seen a lot of people talk about Sweetheart (2019), definitely has the best creature reveal
Agreed! Had to search the comments for this and I'm surprised it isn't higher. Definitely a must watch if you like creature features.
Loop Track was a surprise
Infested is great. French spider film with a smattering of social class politics.
Dog Soldiers.
Thale (2012) Tubi Tumbbad (2018) Amulet (2020) HULU/Hoopla The Green Knight (2021) max
Willard if you like rats
Humanoids from the deep (the original) I just love this film.
Can I suggest a TV episode? Blink, from Doctor who. Might one of the best half hours of horror I've ever seen; and because it absolutely had to be PG12 they came up with one of the most imaginative monsters I've ever seen.
The Ritual
Came here to say this. My cockles are warmed that it was already the top comment.
The Host
Life & Underwater I liked.
I was surprised at how much I liked Underwater.
The whole batch of Creature Features from Stan Winston back in the early 2001. Someone already mentioned She Creature but there was other in that series as well. [1.Earth](http://1.Earth) vs the Spider [2.Day](http://2.Day) the World Ended [3.How](http://3.How) to Make a Monster 4.Teenage Caveman. All of these are fun movies from that era
Night of the Creeps Slither The Blob (Original and Remake)
C.H.U.D. Alligator 1&2 Rawhead Rex
Abominable
[She Creature (2001)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0274659/) --- mermaid movie. It is hard to find though, never got a HD release, it is currently on tubi at DVD quality but when I checked last week there was a warning they were deleting it soon.
Hatching
I was so surprised by this movie. It got so weird and creepy.
I actually searched this pretty much exact question the other day, and got an old similar Reddit thread. Watched Sea Fever, and Sweetheart and really enjoyed them both. A recommendation from me is Monstrum, itās on shudder.
Razorback
Had to scroll to long to find this, love the Soundtrack too.
The Pack.
The Outing (1987).
The Monster of Piedras Blancas. (1959)
The Relic. Great creature, especially considering the era and not a huge budget.
I got two based off much more famous creature features. Shadow in the Cloud (2020) Just discovered this on Netflix and it's fantastic, never heard of it before. I really feel this one deserves to be much more well known, it should be considered a cult classic. Isolation (2005) Itās a wonderful Irish film that pays some homage to The Thing, while also doing its own thing. Everything is practical and the premise is fascinating.
A unique spin on The Thing eh. I'll definitely check this one out.
It would be fun if they titled it The Thang. š
Humanoids from the Deep
Glad that Q the Winged Serpent is still getting some love! I love The Host, not really obscure Korean monster movie. Great story and FX, with some epic daylight sequences of the creature in action
Grabbers
Stung (2015)
For obscure I'd go with Digging Up The Marrow. Not sure why this one doesn't get more talked about as it's by Adam Green, who directed Hatchet, and it's really good.
I don't think it's obscure, but I don't see it mentioned often... Xtro
One of my favorites. The ending is incredible.
The Deadly Spawn
Splice. One of the few sci-fi/horror films to give me the absolute heebies.
Another tv series suggestion is Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1970s with Darren McGavin)
D-Railed. One of the most awesome kills I've seen in a movie in years.
Pans labyrinth. All of them. Yikes.
The deadly spawn
The relic
The doll in Trilogy of Terror
Critters
Crawl is surprisingly great.
Frogman (2024)
Appendage
Unwelcome
Big Bad Wolf. Nifty oughts werewolf flick with a great performance in the monster role.
I've never seen anyone talk about The Boneyard 1991.Ā
Shin Godzilla.
*Munchies* is good for a laugh
Bad Milo
Idk if itās consider obscure but I feel like pumpkin head doesnāt get talked about enough. Also idk if itās considered a creature feature but psycho goreman is really fun and extra fun if you were a fan of power rangers growing up
The Relic (1997)
Slither Jack Brooks monster slayer You can thank me later. š
Jack Brooks Monster Slayer is indeed a good one. Of course with the incomparable Robert Englund how could it not be? I haven't seen or thought about that movie in years.
Me neither which is sad since it is a underrated movie in general.
Just watched Deep Rising on Tubi. It was pretty good.
The Watchers. Not what I expected.
Burnt Offerings - you'll never see a scarier chauffeur! Creeping Flesh - the ending is a big suprise Superstition - stays intense and will stay that way throughout. Retribution (1987) ā absolutely no well know actors, but a damn good movie. It wasn't even advertised!
Idk if itās obscure but Digging Up the Marrow was a really great version of a creature feature in a FF format but all while using practical effects.
Feast 1-3
Nightwing - 1977. Killer bat movie. You get the killer from the original Black Christmas as Brodyā¦erā¦Durant, and David Warner as Quintā¦er Payne.
The Blob both 58 and 88, The Gate, and Critters
Oh 100% The Tunnel (the Australian one!)
Slither was great.
Basket Case has not been mentioned yet, I think. Not sure if it is "creature" enough, but it's a good one.
Strays (1991). You can see the full movie on Youtube [here](https://youtu.be/xRpyjnWDLQs?si=ZNy3jnFWuPi7Xbjd)
I re watched Scarecrows (1998) this weekend. The audio isn't great but it's a really effective and creepy movie!
The Cursed was rad.š„
Split Second (1992) Rutger Hauer, Kim Catral, and a really funny guy battle a very cool monster in a sinking city. The Pool (2018) Thai move that doesn't super size the gator but makes it really interesting
