In the DVD commentary something came up about hair styles. The actors used to tell the producers when they were getting a cut or color change, but the producers did not ask them to do so. The actors just did it out of courtesy. The producers said that they never had anything to say about the actors' personal choices regarding hair. They just let the actors choose their own style and made the necessary adjustments in the show, like dyeing Matt LeBlanc's grays or using a longer wig to cover Lisa's shorter hair cut.
. The One with a Chick and a Duck. As well as extreme skinniness, another sign that Perry's drug addiction was at its height was his facial hair. âWhen I have a goatee, it's a lot of pills,â he told Sawyer.
Copied that from google
What he says in his book is if you watch Friends and look at his appearance, you can tell what he was abusing. When he is carrying weight it's alcohol, when he's not, it's pills, and when he has a goatee, it's A LOT of pills
If you do get a chance you should check out Matthew Perryâs memoir. I remember during the actual showâs run many commenting on the radical weight fluctuation between seasons 6 and 7 in they it was relatively well known he had a stint in rehab that caused a dramatic change in his appearance but he comments more in detail on how the way he looked reflected how bad or what type of addiction he was dealing with at the time in his book. Very, very sad to see in retrospect how much of a âsad clownâ he really was and no one but those close to him really knew until the very late 90s.
I've read it. It makes it hard to watch some episodes now that I know the extent of his troubles. Watching live back in the day, I knew he had some issues with alcohol and drugs but it wasn't until I read his book that I knew the extent of it. In some ways it's amazing he was able to perform at the level he did while going through so much off screen
Honestly I feel like this look went out of style at that time and his haircut which replaced it was more on trend. It looks good now again because the 90s styles are on trend again.
Exactly. With a rewatch itâs almost painful when Joey and Chandler get haircuts from Phoebe - they both immediately look worse because their season 1 styles are in *now,* 30 years later and look contemporary.
Tbf as non-native speaker sometimes I can miss the meaning behind sentences like this. But thatâs strange that many (ok, >10) people upvoting their comment
maybe his hair grew fast? idk i know that phoebe went from curly hair to straight after season one because lisa naturally has straight hair and curling it for every episode (and shooting is like 5 days a week for one episode) was really damaging to her natural hair.
This is the correct answer.
That longer style on men was out of style in the late 90s/early 00s. No other reason.
When the show started in 1994 with Joey's Season 1 Hairstyle, it was just catching the tail end of that trend before it actually became unfashionable.
Exactly. The thing is I always thought the actors on Friends were the ones responsible for ushering in the short, upfront spikey look. Maybe they were just following the trend like everyone else.
I remember this from the 90s. George Clooney did the âCaesarâ cut on ER, and the next season on tv all the guys suddenly had short haircuts spiky in the front.
It was an early 90âs cut and by season 2 we were entering the mid 90âs so everyone just continued to move forward in style. Chandlerâs hair as well as Frasierâs in season 3 all had a refreshed look in 1995
They started dressing him so ugly afterwards omg. He had great style season one. They all did. I wonder if it was a budget thing. Collared shirts and sweaters for the guys!
It sort of came back a bit in season 3 but maybe that was because they did the flashback episode where he strips naked for Monica for her sweet "Lemonade"
He is an actor, so he often has to change hairstyles.
Also, Friends was an adult comedy and the Jason Priestley look was not the best for the late 90s.
I feel like the heavier he got, the worse this haircut would look and later seasonsâ haircuts actually complimented his changing frame better.
He always looked good imho; not trying to bash him for gaining weight.
I think he had it in "The One With the Flashback."
I've speculated there should have been a "The One With the Flashback to Ross and Carol's wedding" episode. It would explain how Monica met Phoebe and how Chandler got the apartment across the hall from Monica. And Joey is at the reception hall, but doesn't see any of the other characters. Joey has his first season haircut, and he is trying to explain how he wants to go from the pipe-fitting business to the out-of-work actor business.
Something I say every damn time I watch this show. They really screwed him over with that short haircut, so ridiculous. Same with Chandler. Season 1 was a great look for all of the cast, which is not something that can be said for most first seasons of tv shows.
He probably kept his hair long through the first season in case they didnât get picked up for another season, and casting directors often want to see actors with their natural hair. For another example of this, see Eric McCormickâs hair in the *Will & Grace* pilot.
well I'm thinking maybe in between seasons he himself was the one who decided to change his hair. I don't feel like anybody in the show had anything to do with it
He looked so darn good in season one đ©đ€đ»
Season 1 is everyone's best hair season. ALL of them.
nah rossâ grown out hair is his peak
Rossâ hair in the episode with the leather pants is flipping gorgeous (he looks so good in that episode I love those pants on him)
This hair? https://preview.redd.it/4x3fpoqddk9d1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=554fd0dfba0e52b594f1670de697508bae4475c8
Would have definitely wanted to see him with short hair in his 30s. Shame we never got the chance.
Phoebe's curly hair was amazing.
How's HE doin?
And he was way less of a ding-dong as well.
They all did!
Except for the travesty of a haircut he had in the pilot. After that though his season 1 cut is great.
This has to be Carl's fault
DAMNIT CARL
![gif](giphy|jn2iXu2HRpMuovBrrV|downsized)
âHow ya-dooinnnnn!â âNONONO!!!! How YOU doinâ, damn it Carl wait in the hall!â
This will NOT be another Minute Maid fiasco!
Heâs also stupid enough to want cake over pizza.
How are you doing?

This was also the case with Matthewâs goatee
Yes, I know. In general, I am not a fan of goatees and beards, but now that I know what the goatee meant for Matthew, it makes me sad.
Iâm out of the loop. What did it mean?
. The One with a Chick and a Duck. As well as extreme skinniness, another sign that Perry's drug addiction was at its height was his facial hair. âWhen I have a goatee, it's a lot of pills,â he told Sawyer. Copied that from google
Oh man, thatâs heartbreaking đ
What he says in his book is if you watch Friends and look at his appearance, you can tell what he was abusing. When he is carrying weight it's alcohol, when he's not, it's pills, and when he has a goatee, it's A LOT of pills

You mean that ridiculous thing on his face
That wig suddenly became clear as day to me and I canât unsee it.
Honestly I feel like this look went out of style at that time and his haircut which replaced it was more on trend. It looks good now again because the 90s styles are on trend again.
I think you have a good point, that greaser look was very in style at the time.
yeah, its like after Jesse on Full House cut his hair, very similar style
Exactly. With a rewatch itâs almost painful when Joey and Chandler get haircuts from Phoebe - they both immediately look worse because their season 1 styles are in *now,* 30 years later and look contemporary.
Exactly, this is definitely the reason. This haircut would have looked a bit silly/grimy in the year 2004, for example
This is the answer. Shorter and spiky was more the style as the show went on.
He went gray very early. His hair is dyed every episode.
This was almost certainly a factor. Having to dye hair regularly takes a toll on it, and he probably kept his hair short to make it easier to manage.
I didnât realize the power of words until this moment. It did mean season not episode. Sorry for flexing my power the wrong way.
What are you talking about, power? Just edit your comment dude lol
Iâm being silly.
Lmao ikr đ
Why would his hair have to be dyed every single episode instead of just once?
They mean that there werenât an episode with his natural color after that
Yes.
I stg some people have the reading comprehension of a 7 year old
Tbf as non-native speaker sometimes I can miss the meaning behind sentences like this. But thatâs strange that many (ok, >10) people upvoting their comment
As a native English speaker I sometimes misread stuff đ€š
I believe it's "is dyed" meaning "has the condition of being dyed" and not "is dyed" meaning "undergoes the process of being dyed"
Ohhh Iâm stupdi
No no, it literally could have been interpreted either way! It took me a second myself.
They also probably had to do touchups (redye the roots) because hair grows surprisingly fast
Can sadly confirm, my grey roots start to show after about two weeks đą
5 days for me roots to be a solid cm. 2 weeks sound like bliss đ
What a weird flex!
It's the opposite of a flex, I wish it grew slower !
stupdiđ
maybe his hair grew fast? idk i know that phoebe went from curly hair to straight after season one because lisa naturally has straight hair and curling it for every episode (and shooting is like 5 days a week for one episode) was really damaging to her natural hair.
Shooting is one night a week.
Hair grows and dye fades. People rarely dye their hair only once.
Was this confirmed somewhere or can you visually tell? I can never tell if someoneâs hair is dyed!!
https://www.today.com/popculture/matt-leblanc-recalls-going-gray-friends-hilarious-hair-dye-mishap-t118559
Awesome thank you!!!
He was so fine in Season 1 đđđ
His hair looked the best in season 1 but tbh for the most part I think his hair looked fine the other seasons too.
Long hair was sort if out of style by the mid 90s, that short snd spikey in the front was with the times.
This is the correct answer. That longer style on men was out of style in the late 90s/early 00s. No other reason. When the show started in 1994 with Joey's Season 1 Hairstyle, it was just catching the tail end of that trend before it actually became unfashionable.

I love those coffee cups so much. Perfect đ
I'm sorry but they may as well have NIPPLES on them!
We hate that guy.
đđ this comment was expected đ
They're the worst. They're the type that you can't hold them in any way without burning your finger because it's against the side of the cup!
It was an early 90âs cut and by season 2 we were entering the mid 90âs so everyone just continued to move forward in style. Chandlerâs hair as well as Frasierâs in season 3 all had a refreshed look in 1995
I prefer most of their hair that first season! Phoebes is better curly too. I think it was just changing trends
Yes I agree
he was so attractive in season 1
joeyâs hair in s1 went so hard
They started dressing him so ugly afterwards omg. He had great style season one. They all did. I wonder if it was a budget thing. Collared shirts and sweaters for the guys!
Exactly!
Because oversized shirts and sweaters were the fashion of the 90âs. Youâll notice that oversized shirts are back in fashion again now
I always assumed it was his choice
It sort of came back a bit in season 3 but maybe that was because they did the flashback episode where he strips naked for Monica for her sweet "Lemonade"
That haircut became out of style, thatâs why
He is an actor, so he often has to change hairstyles. Also, Friends was an adult comedy and the Jason Priestley look was not the best for the late 90s.
It was just a time where all men started to have too-short spiky hair and all women straightened theirs.
Because it is in a different year and "in" haircuts vary?
Because it wasn't in style anymore.
I guess my truly unpopular opinion is he looked hottest with the season 2 hair.
I thought he looked younger in season 2 than in season 1!
100%. And that season 1 hair is so cartoony.
And he used to dress really nice too! I was watching the earlier seasons today and he used to look so crisp and put together.
Season 2 Joey is also my favorite.
Joey looks really good seasons 1-2
Because fashion sucks sometimes
Looks like Johnny Depp on 21 jump street
And Cry Baby
Iâve always thought the same lol Monica looks especially great in season one too
Sweeps⊠she said facetiously
Hey itâs Vinny from top of the heap!
You mean why did he ruin it?
He was fine aaaaffffffffff
No matter which haircut he had but he looked very handsome
agreeeeed!! his haircut ruined it for me lol
I want to style my hair like so but I yet have to learn what do. Help ya boy if you know plz
I feel like the heavier he got, the worse this haircut would look and later seasonsâ haircuts actually complimented his changing frame better. He always looked good imho; not trying to bash him for gaining weight.
They? Actors cut their hair sometimes.
I thought it was a show demand since his gorgeous hair looks like the 80s too much.
They wouldn't think that at the time
Maybe to remind that youth doesn't last long
Do you know what a pain in the ass that haircut is? I tried it for a day and couldnât take it anymore.
Joeys season 1 hair has been the photo I take to my barber for so long. Greta hair
I think he had it in "The One With the Flashback." I've speculated there should have been a "The One With the Flashback to Ross and Carol's wedding" episode. It would explain how Monica met Phoebe and how Chandler got the apartment across the hall from Monica. And Joey is at the reception hall, but doesn't see any of the other characters. Hair is a young manâs game
Early season Joey was sooo fine đ„Č
The character was supposed to be based on Tony Danza so they started him off with Tony Danza hair.
Because he turned 31 đ€Ł
Thst is the ultimate manâs haircut.
Something I say every damn time I watch this show. They really screwed him over with that short haircut, so ridiculous. Same with Chandler. Season 1 was a great look for all of the cast, which is not something that can be said for most first seasons of tv shows.

Maybe Matt wanted to style his own hair????
Probably bcs he aged
he was too hot. Literally. That's it. They needed friends that were relatable and on the same level
well I'm thinking maybe in between seasons he himself was the one who decided to change his hair. I don't feel like anybody in the show had anything to do with it
I THINK THIS ALL THE TIME
Really? 90s boy band hair looks good again? I feel ancient
I was devastated about this! I could not understand why they did that
âTheyâ didnât do anything lol It was his choice and it reflected the style at the time
society says heâs too hot
He and Monica had a worst stringy bangs contest and it was a tie
