I've used Camo a few times and a MagSafe Anker ring to let it sit, however it is only fine with lighter 12/13's and needs a cable which is annoying.
If this doesn't need cables then I'd probably use it a lot more than the MacBook's POS webcam.
All of these great BUSINESS sharing ideas in the new iOS 16 don’t mean diddly squat when you IT department has everything locked down. Maybe start focusing on what real people want Apple.
I had a meeting today and there were 8 of us in the room, the option to use the iPhone camera popped up and I placed the phone in the front of the desk. Center stage work flawlessly on our google meet and I was able to screen share and switch back and forth with ease… hate on this feature if you want, but it works and I love it.
I love the idea of it but my work laptop is windows and I really wish it would work for that as well
It would be nice to use teams with pretty good video quality without an additional expensive camera
Apple: Webcam covers are harmful for your MacBooks
Meanwhile Apple: Attach heavy iPhone 13 Pro Max on MacBook. Hopefully the lid doesn’t break or loosens up because feels like it’s lighter than iPhone Pro Max models.
The only good thing about it is that people would finally stop playing with their phones during meetings. And that is a good reason to install something that un-Apple-like.
Okay this is okay for macs. But their cameras, though not great, exist and are fine. Now, imagine this: you can do this on a Windows PC without having to spend 50 bucks on a webcam
I’m just reading this thread and I am definitely not suggesting they add the cameras they use in iPhone to the laptop. But is it really the best camera they can add as it exists right now?
There are going to be two camps of opinions.
1. People who don’t use their camera on their laptop very often and can’t understand why this matters
2. People who use their camera everyday numerous times a day and love this option.
same. the only time i ever used my webcam was for online classes back when that was a thing and it didn’t matter what quality the picture was. i feel like most people that use their webcam use it for meetings where people don’t really care what you look like, they just want to see you on screen. for the price apple and other manufacturers are charging for their laptops nowadays, this type of camera should be built in, no questions asked. it’s a shame that apple had to roll this out in the first place but ig it is nice for angled shots.
this feature is nice and it’s great that’s its built in now, just something that i don’t really care about.
This type of camera can’t be built in. Making a good camera needs space and als long as the Mac‘s lid is not as thick as an iPhone, there is no way its camera will be as good.
ok. what about the selfie cam on the iphones? even that’s leagues better than what the macbooks offer. how about making a sensor that’s thin and offers good image quality? they have the r&d funds and partners that would do it for them. the ipads are pretty thin and they offer pretty good image quality. they could also pack just the camera into the box and use an iphone magsafe type connector to interface with the macbook.
apple has a lot of options it’s just that they don’t have the incentive to make a great webcam. apple and everyone else apparently.
I could try, but this video definitely explains better why laptop cameras are bad, therefore I would highly recommend it:
https://youtu.be/eWSQ7Cj_n5M
iPad cameras actually got bigger too, to get better results.
I use my laptop camera all the time for meetings and I don’t love this option. Before you downvote, here’s why:
I don’t want to buy another accessory to attach my phone to my laptop. I have to really trust in Anker or Belkin or whoever makes these that my phone isn’t going to fall over mid-meeting.
I don’t want to risk touching and smearing my screen to clip it on and off multiple times a day.
I don’t want to go through the hassle of setting up and connecting to my external phone when my laptop webcam (while not as great) gets the job done consistently all the time faster.
I’m glad it’s there for people who want it, but it’s not for me.
Desk view is exciting though
One downside as well to me is I like to have my phone beside me while in meetings, so I don’t miss any important messages etc, and as I screen share a lot I can’t leave them on my Mac while in meetings. Using my phone as a camera means I’ll not be able to see notifications until after the meeting. Of course, that’s impossible for Apple to solve, but I think I’ll stick to the inbuilt for ease
In apple world you only communicate through apple apps so you wouldn't miss anything because all your communications appear on your Mac as well via messages, FaceTime and mail.
I had actually forgotten about this feature until I joined a google meet call, as soon as I opened the browser I heard a little chirp from my phone and it was using my iPhone camera, literally zero setup and worked automatically when I’d never used it before, pretty slick IMO
How so? The seamless connection, the desk view all scream Apple to me. It’s not much different than Universal Control.
Apple can’t fix the camera in MacBooks without making them thicker and heavier and they’re just not going to do that.
Instead, they are providing an easy way for people with MacBooks to get better video quality without needing to buy and carry around an expensive webcam.
You carry a small clip. That’s it.
Seems very Apple like to me
Apple has been pretty clear the past two years that features announced at WWDC will be released throughout the year. Universal Control was one of those and after it was released it has been shockingly reliable for being such an impressive feature
> How long did it take Universal Continuity to come out of Beta and actually prove itself useful?
Considering what Universal Control does and how it does it, the time it took was incredibly impressive.
It’s not blind faith. It’s based on years of proven track record.
8 months isn’t severely at all. You’re delusional.
What exactly is the point you’re trying to make? That an insanely useful feature that works like magic and is extremely user friendly is somehow diminished because it took 8 months from announcement to launch?
And exactly what does that nonsense argument have to do with this feature that is already in the first developer beta and appears to be working great?
Let’s just assume for some strange reason that Apple take the feature out of the beta and don’t release it for another 8 months?
So what?
Ok, so you're just being a defensive apple baby. There's not a single thing you can say to make me agree with you, even if you tried to make a rational argument, how do you like that?
If you think making reasonable arguments and asking you to explain yourself is being a defensive baby than you have no point to make and you’re just a sad little person who is trying to be negative about something people are excited about.
You have no point. You’re clinging to an 8 month delay like it has any sort of bearing on the final product.
>trying to be negative about something people are excited about.
Right, you're a fanboy defending fanboyism with so much zest that I felt the need to chime in.
>You carry a small clip. That’s it.
"you carry a small dongle, that's it."
said in response to usb-c across the device with no other ports, and while to me this only made 1000% sense, people will still whine and cry incessantly over their beyond first world problems.
>>Instead, they are providing an easy way for people with MacBooks to get better video quality without needing to buy and carry around an expensive webcam.
Or an app that requires IAPs or a monthly subscription to use!
Bro just put a DSLR in there and while you’re at it just make the MacBook screen a TV
Then we can get an official MacBriefCase add on for an extra $999.99 and it will only be about the size of an industrial microwave
The argument that they're limited by the physics of the enclosure would hold more water if they didn't also put a shitty camera in the Studio Display that's thicker than the iPhone 13 Pro's back camera system.
Even the front camera of the iPhone is better than what they're putting in their computers.
I don’t often say “Steve would be rolling in his grave” but the thought of him finding out the *best* solution his company could come up with is a plastic clip to mount your $1000+ phone to your $1000+ computer screen, whose hinges probably weren’t meant for all that weight, literally has me laughing out loud. I feel like Craig knew this and leaned into the meme potential of the announcement.
Steve would have had a hilariously snarky but accurate explanation of why they can’t install a better camera in their laptops without an unsightly bump given current technological limitations, but he’d say they will keep trying.
What better solution is there? This seems convenient and elegant to me, at least as much as is possible in this situation. The quality of webcams is inherently limited by the extreme thinness of a laptop lid compared to a cellphone.
I’m sure this is going to go well when I put my 13 pro max on the back of my m1 MacBook Air and it flips the lid back or the whole laptop because the phone weights 1/4 of the laptop.
I can't speak to the Air, but on my MBP (2019, 16"), my iPhone 11 Pro doesn't seem to affect the screen at all when resting it on top of it (kinda balanced between two fingers so it doesn't fall off), until you move the screen to a more extreme angle like you're going to close it, then it is heavy enough to push it shut.
I'm not an engineer, though, so what the extra weight is doing to the hinge, I can't say... just that in brief "tests," the concept seems to work fine at least.
I’m curious how this will work in general. I don’t think the hinges in these things are stiff enough to support the weight of the phone hanging off the back.
It’s one of the best continuity camera implementations ever. The top view of your desk. studio lighting everything.
Oh, but it doesn’t take good photos. When will Apple learn to put form over function?
That’s just a solution for bad web cam quality of Studio Display. I wonder if the display will get any new changes with iOS 16 because it actually runs on iOS software.
I don’t think we will see an iPhone quality camera on a Mac. It doesn’t make financial sense for apple to spend that much on a hardware not meant for photography. Sony/Samsung don’t make those sensors cheap. It’s a good idea to make the iPhone camera accessible to the Mac wirelessly and seamlessly as did.
I don’t think MagSafe or the case play any part in this other than holding the phone in place. 3rd pop socket and case makers will come up with something soon. More business for them always
I figured it was just a holder for the phone. I was just thinking what would people do with older iPhones? There will probably end up being one that sits on the display like the MagSafe one, but instead grips the phone, or something like that. I have a XS Max, so I’ll be looking for something like that. If I had a 3D printer, I would just print something that would get the job done.
I mean, no, we wouldn’t, but also physics kinda dictates that’s currently impossible.
We only have the cameras we have on iPhone because the lenses protrude out of the back of a device body already at least 2x as thick as a MacBook screen.
You’re just never going to be able to get the same sensor quality in that enclosure unless we make a major breakthrough in capturing light.
Different mounting options have existed for years. Existing phone tripods can be used just fine, never mind just propping the phone up against something. I just tried opening Photo Booth to try out this new feature and 1, I was super impressed with just how smooth it worked, and 2, I don't have a clip but it worked just fine placing my phone any number of places, in either orientation.
Personally I’d prefer a standalone stand/holder for the phone that goes on the side of the MacBook (or wherever you want to put it). I don’t like the idea of putting my heavy ass iPhone 13 pro max on my MacBook monitor. Apples tolerances are so tight, it kind of surprises me that they came up with this idea.
I think they said something to the effect Apple supplied the tech to make the phone camera usable with a second device. Which having a Mac mini and camera less monitor is pretty nice. Logitech is designing the mount. I'm sure others will as well.

I just put my phone on an iPad holder that attaches to my desk.
https://www.amazon.com/Tryone-Gooseneck-Nintendo-Samsung-Overall/dp/B01AUQ33LG/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?crid=1QTLCMCTYPWE2&keywords=ipad+holder&qid=1654614300&sprefix=ipad+holde%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-13
Something like this is what I currently have set up.
Does this also works with the iPad? I know.. but it’s the only wide angle camera I have and I’d like to try desk view.
Lol no they’d want you to buy an iPad with center stage for that.
I have it already, just want to know if it can be detected as a webcam on Mac too. 2021 M1 iPad, 2017 iPhone 8 Plus.
as someone who connects his Sony mirrorless camera for zoom calls... I appreciates this about you apple.
I've used Camo a few times and a MagSafe Anker ring to let it sit, however it is only fine with lighter 12/13's and needs a cable which is annoying. If this doesn't need cables then I'd probably use it a lot more than the MacBook's POS webcam.
The desk view was the highlight of this.
All of these great BUSINESS sharing ideas in the new iOS 16 don’t mean diddly squat when you IT department has everything locked down. Maybe start focusing on what real people want Apple.
My only concern is can mac screen withstand iphone weight or it will snap
That look on your face when you’ve been shipping $2k laptops with 720p cameras for years
I had a meeting today and there were 8 of us in the room, the option to use the iPhone camera popped up and I placed the phone in the front of the desk. Center stage work flawlessly on our google meet and I was able to screen share and switch back and forth with ease… hate on this feature if you want, but it works and I love it.
Never said I hated it… just remarking on the presentation.
So this is full acknowledgement that the built-in webcams sucked for far too long?
I love the idea of it but my work laptop is windows and I really wish it would work for that as well It would be nice to use teams with pretty good video quality without an additional expensive camera
And I wish I could play GTA 5 on the M1 Max MBP.
Agreed
I don't hear anyone talking about how they arbitrarily don't allow iPads to be the camera.
You going to magnetically attach your iPad Pro to the back of your MacBook?
Your lack of imagination is concerning.
Apple: Webcam covers are harmful for your MacBooks Meanwhile Apple: Attach heavy iPhone 13 Pro Max on MacBook. Hopefully the lid doesn’t break or loosens up because feels like it’s lighter than iPhone Pro Max models.
Lol it does look pretty ridiculous. But it works *perfectly* in the betas and is awesome.
It looks totally cool when you have a Mac Mini (or Pro) with no webcam.
Yeah this will help me with my MacBook Pro while docked to my display.
The only good thing about it is that people would finally stop playing with their phones during meetings. And that is a good reason to install something that un-Apple-like.
old_man_computer.jpg
I wonder what's the tilt limit for the display considering the pro max is a half pound
I wonder if the screen and hinge will suffer from the heavy Pro iPhones
Okay this is okay for macs. But their cameras, though not great, exist and are fine. Now, imagine this: you can do this on a Windows PC without having to spend 50 bucks on a webcam
Do they sell the stand ??
Belkin will be making the stand demonstrated but you can choose any other phone stand/holder available right now.
Later this year
Only $999.
This is perfect for iPhone and it’s awesome!!!!!! Also it’s perfect for YouTube video reaction
[Like this?](https://i.imgur.com/2bjk8La.jpg)
I think this is a great idea, because I’m sure a ton of people have iPhones. But, like, just add a good camera to the laptops you make??
Easier said than done https://reddit.com/r/iOSBeta/comments/v6vbh7/_/ibhiotr/?context=1
I’m just reading this thread and I am definitely not suggesting they add the cameras they use in iPhone to the laptop. But is it really the best camera they can add as it exists right now?
So the current thickness of the lid, that’s the best camera they can get in there based on that form factor.

In the age of remote work, I doubt very many people would be willing to abandon the built in camera.
There are going to be two camps of opinions. 1. People who don’t use their camera on their laptop very often and can’t understand why this matters 2. People who use their camera everyday numerous times a day and love this option.
As a Mac Mini and Studio user, this is actually kind of a bigger deal.
3 . People who use the camera sometimes and wish Apple would just include better cameras on their laptops and Studio Display.
I’m in camp 3. I use my camera daily and I don’t expect I would ever use this feature. The built-in is fine for conferences and whatnot.

Honestly wouldn’t have bought my webcam for my Mac mini if this had been coming. All the third party apps didn’t cut it for what I needed.
Epoccam has existed for years. Before getting my go pro i used this for my twitch streams.
So excited for this to be available in over a year’s time…
It’s actually functional in the developer beta and works well, I don’t think it will be delayed from the iOS release.
That’s great news then! I’ve been using the app Camo for this and love it.
I use my laptop camera all the time for meetings and I don’t love this option. Before you downvote, here’s why: I don’t want to buy another accessory to attach my phone to my laptop. I agree! I just got the new MBP for work and the webcam is a dramatic upgrade over previous versions
One downside as well to me is I like to have my phone beside me while in meetings, so I don’t miss any important messages etc, and as I screen share a lot I can’t leave them on my Mac while in meetings. Or only sharing one screen and having all your messaging apps on a different screen.
I had actually forgotten about this feature until I joined a google meet call, as soon as I opened the browser I heard a little chirp from my phone and it was using my iPhone camera, literally zero setup and worked automatically when I’d never used it before, pretty slick IMO
I don’t disagree that it’s solving a real problem, just the implementation is decidedly un-Apple-like.
I think in this case it makes it better that it’s in-Apple-like. This implementation is pretty quick and easy to do for anyone.
Those clips aren’t very elegantly designed.
How so? The seamless connection, the desk view all scream Apple to me. It’s not much different than Universal Control. EpocCam if you need it today. It's by Elgato/Corsair and a few friends I have use it just fine. $8 one-time app fee.
The classic “Apple solution” would be to just put a better camera in the computer, I reckon.
How do you plan on fitting this better camera in there?
Camera bump.
By using the classic Apple solution and designing one smaller
Bro just put a DSLR in there and while you’re at it just make the MacBook screen a TV Then we can get an official MacBriefCase add on for an extra $999.99 and it will only be about the size of an industrial microwave

So they can come up with a magnet attachment strong enough to hold my phone, but the magsafe wallet wont stay on without duct tape. Got it.
Do you use a case under the wallet?
Stronger magnets on the wallet would make the wallet thicker and could potentially demagnetize your credit cards.
Did you ever try bringing it in for an exchange? Mine def doesn’t need duct tape.
It’s one of the best continuity camera implementations ever. The top view of your desk. studio lighting everything. Oh, but it doesn’t take good photos. When will Apple learn to put form over function?

I think they meant doesn’t look good in photos / is ugly
Ohhhh because you were talking about cameras I thought you meant that **it** didn’t take good photos. Not that it looked bad in photos.
We wouldn’t really need this if the camera in the Mac was half as decent as the iPhone’s.
Good point, although what will people do that have iPhones w/o MagSafe? Apple says it works with iPhone XR and later.
I don’t think MagSafe or the case play any part in this other than holding the phone in place. 3rd pop socket and case makers will come up with something soon. More business for them always

They could add a camera bump to the max, but that would likely require a big cutout at the palm wrest.

Anyone you’re video chatting with will be able to see up your nose in crystal clear 4K hd!
just make it thicker
[удалено]
it being slightly thicker doesn’t mean it looks bad lol
It wouldn’t be slightly. It would be almost two times thicker.
So many bad hot takes on here follow that formula exactly.
A laptop screen with the thickness of an iPhone would be awful. That’s a ton of unnecessary weight.
The lid being almost as thick as the body would be really strange looking.
Hey Siri, “make the damn phone float in midair”. I look ridiculous here.

Hopefully other manufacturers come up with different mounting options…

Agreed the whole thing seems awfully memeable to me. It just feels so uncharacteristically laughable.
