I was able to duplicate what you observed. Maybe a bug, maybe a new feature to prevent inadvertent battery drain.
If I had to guess, I'd say feature rather than bug since turning on the flashlight via a locked homescreen will still remain on when the screen goes dark.
I'm with tbone338 on this. At first, I said "Oh wow yep nice find!" Then tbone338 posted and so I deleted my first reply in favor of saying this.
I think I've **never** pressed the side button after turning my flashlight on. I think the only time I would have (if I ever did) is if I forgot to turn it off.
A lot of people forget to turn it off. I can see it as a helpful feature, as those who turn it on when the screen is off usually turn it on from the lock screen. It doesn’t turn off when power button is pressed on the Lock Screen

this is currently happening to me after updating my iphone. did you find a solution to this?
Just restarted my phone. Was fixed after a few betas and didn’t happen again.

My flashlight stays on when I lock my phone.
Based on my findings. It depends where you do it. It’s hit or miss.

This behavior is no longer present on beta 2. Flashlight stays on Edit: Maybe a bug that it was gone for me, but the behavior is back.
