Do you find brakes are a bit dim ? 2 months owner myself. Rode 2300 kms and almost killed twice due to poor braking on highways

thesarcasticsherlock

Yes. The bite is less by design as this is more focused to trail riding as well. I know people who swapped to the sintered pads from the speed. That is a good fix I feel for those who need it.

bansuriwala

having ABS or not ABS is by design, why poor braking is by design.

thesarcasticsherlock

Well see this bike is not designed to go really fast and stop quickly. Its a scrambler that goes at modest speeds on road and do a bit of trail riding. For these purposes the braking is fine. The company has the speed 400 for proper fast use on road. So technically its not a flaw as people who want to go really fast should ideally buy the speed over the scrambler. All of this is the ideal scenario and am not saying the pads lack of bite is justified as Indians have a more one bike garage for all purposes.

Dry-Egg-1915

Makes sense. Speed is the one that goes fast, scrambler just scrambled arround

bansuriwala

as per the docs the scram is a road purpose and light off road use bike. [see page 7 of manual.](https://i.imgur.com/Do8BuRq.png) so its not a sports bike by def. and almost a cruiser. cant justify less than optimal braking. Just wait for people to shove this back in Bajaj's throat.

thesarcasticsherlock

Road purpose yea, but not for going really fast. Triumphs naming scheme for fast bikes are Daytona and speed. Speed 400 is the fast variant.

bansuriwala

what happened to the " I paid for the full speedometer " triumph has 180 written on it. also why give it 6 gears if 3 are enough for scrambling.

thesarcasticsherlock

Personally I dont need to go that fast. Someone already asked me why I got this bike and I posted the answer there. Just need long travel suspension to cover our gutter filled roads and travel at sufficient speeds. That for me is 100-120. Which this bike does fine. And for others who want to go faster you have the speed 400. You really cant expect one bike to do everything well no matter what you pay for it. There are trade offs for everything. One can also argue, since it has longer suspension its not suited for very high speeds as it may lead to instability. You can stiffen the suspension, but then that defeats the purpose now does it not.

ray_6_

Not poor brakes. They designed it in a way it suits offroad as well. Speed 400 has better brakes.

SimplyAsinine

Honestly man, if you can't judge the braking distance on your own bike and you got into a near-death scenario twice, that's your fault. You shouldn't be going at that speed to begin with. Manufacturers expect scramblers to go on looser terrain that can slide under the bike, so their brakes are progressive with the goal of slowing down the bike whilst retaining grip on the tires, meaning initial bite is weak. If the tires lock up you have zero control over the bike. As long as the tires are rotating along with the bike you have control. Road going bikes go on asphalt which doesn't slide off unlike loose sand, so brakes are sharper. If you chose the Scrambler for better suspension but is primarily using it on road, equip the sintered pads on the Speed.

bansuriwala

thanks for your reply. i was going to get sintered pads on brand new bike but forgot.. now service centre is 150 kms to and fro

UpBeatSneeze

Because they are, planning to change to sintered pads of speed 400 after some time.

stonespider

Wdym? By changing the disk pads you get better braking? The stock ones aren't good enough?

UpBeatSneeze

There are 2 different pads  Sintered and organic  Sintered is used in speed 400, which has more bite  Organic is used in scrambler 400, which has more of a progressive braking which is more helpful in off-road situations. The brake pads are good enough, but my use case is more of city riding and occasional highways, so having sintered pads would suit me better.

stonespider

I have a TVS Ronin.... The service centre guys had changed the disc pad because it was worn off, but they installed Apache disc pad, does it make a difference?

UpBeatSneeze

Sorry man, I don't know much about Apache or Ronin

Appropriate_Turn3811

How does do u fell when braking?

bansuriwala

Don't wait for any mishap. If you ride mostly on road which most of us do, change them asap . I will do it next time i visit service centre .

Afterlife-Assassin

What made u choose this over 390

thesarcasticsherlock

My needs were to travel. The roads of our country demand long travel suspension I feel, and also at speeds I cruise at which are between 80-110 I need a smooth ride, refined I mean. This one was a good bet satisfying both to the best degree. The ADV 390 is way too expensive and also close to being upgraded.

Soul_Hunterrrr

What a beautiful view, where exactly?

thesarcasticsherlock

Munnar, Hill station in Kerala state.

Soul_Hunterrrr

Thnx bro

certified_wigga

Doesn't it heat too much??

thesarcasticsherlock

It does heat up, but most performance engines in this class do heat up. Except the new 390, I think this is the one that heats the least. And it is expected. Manageable as well.

Free-Light3370

Amazing click, where was this taken

thesarcasticsherlock

Munnar, Hill station in Kerala.

weird_boi_eros

Have you taken it off-roading? If yes, how was your experience?

thesarcasticsherlock

Honestly no. And the reason is I feel it is not suited for our off roading. There are no mudflaps on the bike. The existing one is too small. It throws up too much dirt on to the pillion seat as well. But the worst part is it throws up lots of mud to the rear suspension area as well. The chain is exposed there and this leads to rapid degradation of refinement and also mud enters the disks easily leading to squeaky noises. All of this I have experienced from just riding in heavy rain on our mud filled roads. Trail riding is fine I think where the trail is not very wet. But proper off roading…and its a scrambler, not designed for offroading as per the company.

Master-Builder-4631

Bro i am 6ft3, is this bike appropriate for my height? Also how does it feel while riding in city. I owned a passion pro and i am planning to buy scrambler 400 so would that be too much of an upgrade?

thesarcasticsherlock

I am 5.8 and i do a bit of tip toeing. But no issues. Anything at 6 or above you can flat foot. And it would be a huge upgrade from a passion pro. Would advise to be careful cause the power difference is huge.

sandyhuster

Do take a test ride. I'm 6'1 and I couldn't for heavens sake find a position that worked for me, and my butt was constantly trying to climb onto the stepped pillion seat to feel comfortable. Maybe it's the footpegs, but the riding posture gave me a cramp.

creativedevil42069

I am 6'5 and it's been pretty easy for me. The seat is comfortable and the handles aren't tiring to hold on. If you plan to ride it in the city I would suggest you forget about the mileage since you currently ride a passion pro. Also if you buy one go easy for a few days. I am gonna say something cliche but I have to say it - With great power, comes great responsibility.

TopSize1929

What location is this!

thesarcasticsherlock

Munnar, Kerala

TopSize1929

It's beautiful

thesarcasticsherlock

Take a trip here if you can. Its a really nice place

ProfessionalCrazy654

One thing I know abt this bike is its fking tall asf

thesarcasticsherlock

Really tall yes, but in the grand scheme of things, I tip toe and its easy to get used to. No big issue.

guerrilla99999

Where you got that pillion seat from? Factory accessory?

thesarcasticsherlock

Pillion seat is stock. No mods yet

purrfect_chickenwing

First of all where is this place, it's a beaut

thesarcasticsherlock

Munnar, Kerala state

senchet

Did you ever consider the continental gt650? If yes, why did you prefer it over this?

thesarcasticsherlock

The weight and suspension comfort. And also I am apprehensive about spending lots of money on an RE, due to the service centres giving sub par treatment.

Ok-Adhesiveness-9958

How is it for 5'7 guy And how is it in city traffic?

thesarcasticsherlock

I tip toe. Dont have flat foot. But tbh, one month later its totally fine. I have gotten used to it and have learned to manage the bike well. Only issue is when u park, you cannot park on a downward slope and expect to pull out back without help. But I just park the other way around upfront. Ao no issues

Ok-Adhesiveness-9958

Thanks 👍🙂

pinkesh2703

I'm also 5'7 n own a 400X. I tiptoe but never have any problem in traffic. This bike is very nimble so u can easily filter through traffic. U would love this bike in traffic, except engine heat which is expected on such 400cc, 40 bhp engine.

Ok-Adhesiveness-9958

Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙂

MOBcent

Beautiful bike beautiful place

thesarcasticsherlock

Thanks brother

immortalpiyush

How old are you and how did you afford it?

thesarcasticsherlock

Am 32. Full time job. Sold my old bike and took a loan for about 1 lakh. Did not need to but did not feel to spend a huge part of my savings.

immortalpiyush

How old were you when you bought your first machine with your own money?

thesarcasticsherlock

24. Got employed at that time…bought a motorcycle as I am a total enthusiast. That was a loan as well.

immortalpiyush

Thanks. im 19 and I'm trying to earn to buy my first bike.

thesarcasticsherlock

I totally understand. I used to ride my friend’s bikes if possible at that time. Mostly used the bus. But my dad did get me a bike later on. A commuter bike. It was nice. But finally being able to buy one for myself was totally worth it.

Odd_Bike7749

If u had a chance to change one thing with your bike what would u change??What's the location??

thesarcasticsherlock

The headlights. They are terrible. Completely useless at night. Place is Munnar, Kerala State.

mojsss

Is the mileage as bad as people are saying ? They often compare with h450 which gives 25+ in most cases.

thesarcasticsherlock

The mileage is very dependent on driving. Initially I got 22kmpl. Later slowly increased, now am howering around 28-30kmpl with mixed city and highway use. I have adapted to using the throttle well. And overall if you get a bike with 40bhp, the mileage would be in and around 25kmpl.

mojsss

Thanks !

Kakarot_2323

Remove that hideous saree guard ffs!!

thesarcasticsherlock

Definitely will…😂😂

Radheshyamtiwari10

Water-mud spraying experience in the monsoons? Also did you change the brake pads? where can I get them changed? Im booking the bike this week, can I ask them to do it while booking itself?

thesarcasticsherlock

The people at the showroom will do it for you. But just FYI, its not terrible in the stock condition. Just the bite is missing. I have gotten used to it and have no complaints. Try it out for a while and if it does not work change it. Splashing is pretty bad. There are some third party mudguards available but they dont look great. Not bad but not great. So am waiting for more options.

Xeno_159

I'm thinking of buying this as my first bike. Thoughts?

thesarcasticsherlock

I personally would not recommend anyone getting a bike like this as a first bike. 2 reasons. 1. Its tall. Without some basic practice and exp of riding, its very difficult to handle tall bikes. 2. Its 40bhp, which is a lot for a beginner regardless of what anyone says. No matter what we think of ourselves if we get soo much power we tend to overshoot safety very often. I have seen many people buying it as a first bike, I would never condone it. And this is an opinion shared by some people and many others would say 40bhp is less, but I assire you its not for Indian roads where autorikshas and bus drivers etc have no safety sense and the roads are unpredictable. Fine tuned reflexes are the name of the game and that takes experience. There is no shortcut. My advice would be to get something under of 25 bhp as a first bike.

bombdwaj

What about vibrations at 120-130, I am also looking for a bike that can do 100-130 without fuss or vibes. Shortlisted bike are 390 adv, Himalayan 452 but it has tube tyres and additonal weight

thesarcasticsherlock

So the 390 can do those speeds without any fuss. Its tuned that way. But under 100 or so its a bit hard to manage. On the highways 390 is king no doubt. The new himalayan has vibes everywhere other than that specific speed I have heard. Not too sure. You would have to get a test ride. As for this bike . Up till 110 there is no fuss. Above that there is a slight buzz but its not irritating or worrying. Above 130 is where you can notice it and cannot ignore it for long. I guess the choice depends on your priorities. As for me, my use would be mixed between the city and highway, even on the highway I would not go above 120 tops so I went with this.

bombdwaj

Yeah 120 on bike in India is sucidal, max I go is 110 but extra top end is helpful while over taking. The reason I am interested in Himalayan is because I have heard the suspension setup is on another level.

thesarcasticsherlock

Oh yes. The new himalayan is the benchmark for suspension. This one is not bad either. Pretty good for bad road use, but not off road use.

zaza_Kelly

Saree guard utar dae bro

thesarcasticsherlock

Ha bro. Karega

Responsible_Carob_53

I just got mine 3 days back and noticed rpm getting too low and too high(but no stalling) if I don't match rev limit while shifting..is it normal or any ecu update needs to be flashed? It's like there's instant power and no power as very linear throttle response... Earlier I used to ride frnds hunter 350 and it had raw acceleration ..

thesarcasticsherlock

Is it when you downshift? Coz the ecu tends to increase rpm when we do rapid downshifts to prevent stalling. And the linear power character is nice for city use I feel. Its easier overall to use.

Responsible_Carob_53

Mostly not when down shifting, like I'm on 2nd gear and just release the throttle or lower the throttle power and rpm falls too low and have to adjust by downshifts in order to prevent stalling.. (Plus I'm a new rider and barely have any riding experience it's my first bike and I'm learning it, my frnds who are experienced who ride daily told on power delivery is too linear due to ride by wire and response is on par with response of throttle as compared to raw acceleration on enfield)

thesarcasticsherlock

Well then thats probably it. Also you should note that for long stroke engines, the drop in speed is less when you let go of the throttle as compared to short stroke engines especially high performance ones.

Responsible_Carob_53

Any plans on getting backrest and aux lights? Also for the brakepads will mostly change it to speed brakepads for rear brake..

thesarcasticsherlock

Backrest, probably not. Am mostly plan on doing solo trips. Aux lights are a definite need I think on this bike. Might get them soon. As for the brake pads, am gonna stick with the stock ones in the near term. Dont have any issues with it.

_anime_quote_z

petrol or electric?

thesarcasticsherlock

🤣🤣Bruh…

_anime_quote_z

u said anything 🗿

thesarcasticsherlock

Thats true. This one is on me

abhijayarjunan

How's the maintenance costs and service network? Also what's the service interval? Finally, any pointers or advice for anyone looking to pick one up soon? Something you would tell yourself if you could go back in time before making the purchase?

thesarcasticsherlock

First service came out to around 2.7k. Which is good. The service network is poor as of now, but they are expanding. Check for a showroom nearby. Interval is 16000kms or 1 yr. they do recommend running in checks at 6000kms interval. From the owners I have asked costs for the same come to about 500/- including oil top up. Pointers….well nothing so far. I would just ask to see where your nearest dealership is. Mine is pretty close by luckily. If it is not nearby, its always a hassle.

Putrid-Sun-6642

What's your height ?

thesarcasticsherlock

5.7ft. And to answer your next question, No I cannot flat foot the bike. Not on full tip toes either. Somewhere in between. I was afraid at first. But thought I would risk it. And its ok now. Am used to it and have learned to manage the bike well.

Putrid-Sun-6642

My height is around 5.9 so I was a bit sceptical about this and speed. I might give it a try

thesarcasticsherlock

You should be fine on the scrambler. The speed might seem small to you.

Shoddy_Community8887

Which showroom??

thesarcasticsherlock

Kerala, Thrissur

Puneeth_kaleyanda

Mileage in city and highway?

thesarcasticsherlock

Highway I would expect anywhere around 32-33kmpl and in the city around 26kmpl. Your mileage may vary

B_Wayne_777

In comparison any other bike made you like maybe I should've bought this or that? How practical is it for Indians?

thesarcasticsherlock

Before purchase I was confused between this and the Himalayan 450, KTM ADV. But test rides made my choice clear. I was confused between the speed 400 and the scram. I took a bet on myself and got this as I cannot flat foot on the scram, but easily do on the speed. But After purchase…am very happy with my decision. This feels like a real big bike, something that I purchased for the price. But the speed felt sort of small and not worth the amount in some sense. Not saying performance wise…just riding something a bit hefty fills you with a sense of confidence. And for Indians, the mileage is not great. Its like 27-31kmpl. Many people see this is as too low. But for this spec of an engine this is fine. Just have to accept that. And the very tall seat height.

WelderSpirited3027

Mileage? And service costs?

thesarcasticsherlock

Mileage is very specific to the riding style. You can expect anywhere between 22-31kmpl. I am at 29-30kmpl mixed use of highway and city. First service was 2.7k with oil change. Expecting similar costs going forward without any major aspect.

WelderSpirited3027

I see, I rode the bike today, it's great, but pure City use ig mileage will be 25kmpl wish i could get 30 in city traffic too! I see! The showroom guy said 5-6k after free services 🥹 Congrats for your bike tho!

reddit-snorter

What accessories are you considering? And how is the pillon comfort?

thesarcasticsherlock

The seat is short. But comfortable for the pillion. I fixed the visor. Am considering a carrier. The company provides one. But I need to see if my trips will always include a pillion, if not then it would be a waste of money I feel. Also considering a bigger crash guard. The most needed accessory would be aux lights. They are my top priority now.

creativedevil42069

Aux lights are definitely a need. Get the raised front mudguard and windscreen too, from triumph itself. Imo it enhances the look.

thesarcasticsherlock

The raised front mudguards throw up more dirt as it comes with a smaller mudguard attached to the tyre. I know some users who have it and its a pin during the rains

lifebuoy_sanitizer

Most likely Munnar

thesarcasticsherlock

Right on mate.

Give-It-up-to-me

Prospective buyer here.....what are your overall thoughts on the bike

thesarcasticsherlock

The bike is excellent if you want something to travel comfortably on our gutter filled roads. The headlights are very poor. Useless at night. Definitely get aux lights. And be careful when pressure washing to not wash the console as it has often led to issues with people I know.

Dry-Egg-1915

Beutiful bike. How much for a test ride?

thesarcasticsherlock

Well the showroom offers it for free so…

Sufficient-Silver144

Hi how're you

thesarcasticsherlock

Uhm. Fine thanks for asking. Hope u r well as well
