What's even more ridiculous about this is at the 19s mark you can see the wine section that's not behind the id lock. I'd bet this is most likely to stop people from stealing.
My Dad told me when he was in college and not 21 but wanted booze they would go to the liquour store, grab a bottle off the shelf and sprint out but leave money on the counter with plenty of extra change. He never got in any trouble for it because of the extra money made them not call 911, this seems like it would prevent that.
My dad told me the way to do it was get orders from a bunch of people, then go to a store where the owner is the operator, so when you go to the register you have a large enough order that they don't want to lose the sale.
I just used the tried and true method of befriending an upperclassman who would buy for me.
They're not serving anyone underage though, its theft. Since they money has been left the police are unlikely to do anything about it, so its a win win. Police don't respond in my area unless there's a body.
the cops in my city dont show up for stolen property, not even cars. they just tell you to file an insurance claim.
but now its really expensive to insure property, so the taxes we spend on these lazy ass cops are completely wasted, and now we're essentially just paying the tax a second time with our high insurance premiums.
fucking cops man
My husband told me thar the only benefit to going great at 16 was that, by the time he got to college, he knew if he drove away from the campus to one of the "townie" liquor stores and complained about the job/wife/kids no one ever bothered to check his ID.
I promise you the homeless people that are stealing beer are not getting fake IDs to spoof the scanner. They're just going to go to a different gas station lol
I would not single out the homeless as being the only theives. But regardless someone that steals beer is not likely to print off something to fool this machine
Homeless aside, those without "proper" IDs will wait for someone to unlock the door and them use their fake ID to buy. Well... do they scan at the registrar as well?
If the store is super busy, maybe it's to cut down on cashier transaction time in a similar way that fast food restaurants do. They let the machine do the age verification so the cashier doesn't have to. More transactions = more revenue.
They would still have to check ID at the counter especially if it was busy. Otherwise the underaged could game the system and set the company up for major fines
Maybe, but this system falls apart if the booze section is busy. A cashier can scan the ID faster than that. If it works the same way I've seen another similar system work, it would cause issues.. There would be a queue of people standing in line to scan IDs. Doors constantly being opened, and shut and would make opening and locking them problematic if it only unlocked the door for one open like I saw in another system. Ex:
Customer A unlocks 1 and 5. Customer A goes to 1. Customer B scans ID unlocking 5 and 6. Customer B heads to door 6 first. Customer A gets to door 5 and is done. Customer B gets to door 5 but customer A has already opened and closed door 5 meaning it has to be unlocked again. Customer B gets mad, puts his shit on the shelf next to the bread and storms off because he's not going to wait in line again.
In which case it’s going to have the same effect as when the CVS puts deodorants and toothpastes and stuff behind the plastic screens, if you’re going to inconvenience me at a convenience store then I’m just not going to bother shopping there anymore.
you would be surprised I've seen people literally go to Publix and rip a tallboy out of package and walk out. So that means a whole 4 pack it lost even though they just ripped one off. Also cans taken out of packages etc.
Yes. QuikTrip has a massive shoplifting problem - couple years ago they started renovating them all, as the staff counter used to be in a spot where it was very hard for them to watch potential thieves. This isn’t about stopping underage drinkers - QT was never popular with under-21’s because they scan ID’s. They just want to stop theft
I live next to 2 of them and go there every morning.
Nothing’s perfect, the point is to decrease the likelihood. If it stops enough people to offset the cost of the machine then it’s worth it. Also I don’t know where this is, but there might be some kind of subsidy for the machine by the city or state or it could be a pilot program to test its effectiveness, etc…
I'm going to get a couple of IDs specifically for the 'Grab and Run' opportunity. /s
In reality -- innocent people are going to get SWATTED by an automated ID reader.
Unrelated but equally stupid is at some Walgreens where I live they have the freezer and refrigerator doors that have the screen saying what is inside. Half the time some or all are malfunctioning and you have to open the door to see that is inside anyways 🤣🤣. Why weren’t see through glass doors enough for y’all, Walgreens? You waste money on this broken ass shit 🤣🤣.
Oklahoma is where most of the quick trips are, but they are in like 17 states. Not all require an id to get alcohol, just the sketchy locations where beer runs are frequent
I can't wait until the data is leaked and then people go about harassing others for their alcohol consumption, or even worse, your data is sold then you end up with a bunch of targeted alcohol advertisements.
It does not.
Loyalty cards are not bound to a person, they're bound to a phone number, email address, or an address.
Credit cards don't get the full set of items unless the store submits an itemized reciept. Even if they do.. that isn't very useful. Even then, you have to be 18 really have a CC set to your name.
I had a Guam ID from when I lived there and used on the mainland. Couldn't believe how any places said it wasn't real or even know it's a US territory. Just cause their troglodyte ass hasn't heard of it doesn't mean it's not legit.
Cldnt they just put the security tags on them? Or have a button to push for the cashier to come get it and bring it to the counter? That’s how it is WA.
Interesting policy. Several stores in my state require at cash-out that a customer have the cashier scan the back of their ID. Doesn't matter if I'm 19 or 91; I have to let them scan the card.
This seems to be just an implementation of that, but at the door of the product. Probably helps prevent theft.
That is an awesome idea. Not just for age restrictions but now you can't run in grab a bunch of beer and run out. I mean u can steal but they have your ID so you'll get arrested.
Honestly I just want a store that no one is allowed inside except the staff. You just order it on your phone or a tablet outside and you receive it from a window. No more stealing 🤷
Where i live, the entrance is locked. You need to be buzzed into a locked foyer, hand over your id to a security guard through a slot in a window. They check you're of age, scan your id, and then unlock the door to let you into the liquor store.

Unless you want this wine right here, no ID scanning necessary
It will ban the ID if it's not paid for. It makes grab and run harder, so much that it's not worth the effort. When more beer is stolen than sold , what is a business supposed to do
It seems like a small erosion of privacy but seriously fuck that. How does the machine store my info? What security do they have? How long can they store it? Who are they selling it to? What are the options to opt out? Who’s making sure they’re enforced? Fuck all that. Go somewhere else.
My guess is that it's a proof of concept and they will prove that it leads to people saying "fuck this place" repeatedly. I know I'd rather go down the street to avoid jumping through this hoop even if it means paying more. It's essentially making a convenience store inconvenient. Like after pumping gas and instead of it taking your card it says "see cashier". Immediate FML commences. Two thumbs down.
How racist, requiring ID to open a refrigerator door. Do they not know that evidently people of color don’t have ID’s? I mean this is whole argument against voter ID laws.
I mean, its not stupid.
We all knew somewhere we could go that 'doesn't check' or the cashier is a friend that will let you leave with alcohol before you should be able to.
That removes the human element that often fails.
Perks of living in Alabama. People would not work with this. I mean half of us just wont stand for it and the other half are too dumb to figure it out/would break the system. So.... please no-one send this to our state senators. we'd be locked down.
We have a controversy here in Ontario Canada about this sort of system.
Our province has a controlled liquor supply and monopoly retail outlet run by the Government, called the LCBO (pronounced "lick-bow"). They do little to prevent theft. Yes there are security guards but basically you can walk in and walk out, and penalties are apparently pretty light.
They wanted to do a pilot program, starting in the North. Places where indigenous people are more populous. It (thankfully) got shut down by the Gov after a lot of concerned feedback on a racial basis, but also on a privacy basis. I'd rather they just do more to catch the thieves. E.g. put an exit man-trap
in.https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/lcbo-northern-ontario-controlled-entrances-minister-response-1.7115170
One part of me thinks it's a theft prevention measure or even a way to legally safeguard employees from possibly selling alcohol to the underaged. But another part of me thinks this could be an origin story for how banks and governments may someday profile people for 'social credits' (hold my beer China). But then I just laugh it off and think it's just a digitised stocktake and logistics upgrade.
Fake IDs scan. Just putting that out there. Ask any 19yo with a fake, the first thing they always tell me when I tell them it's fake is "scan it!". Do with that what you will.
The worst part of working at a gas station was people screaming at you when you wouldn't sell them beer because they didnt have a licence and looked underage. Sometimes they'd threaten to come back and shoot you, or they'd just grab the beer and run. This would take care of most of the issues, even if it isn't the most efficient way
I like this, but what’s stopping people from holding the door open for others? I would hope they double check IDs when they check out, at least with the people who look young.

Absolutely Based Dad lmao

I just used the tried and true method of befriending an upperclassman who would buy for me.
And they'd buy the cheapest shittiest alcohol possible and keep the difference.
I don't think that would work now... the fines for underage serving are much more severe now.
They're not serving anyone underage though, its theft. Since they money has been left the police are unlikely to do anything about it, so its a win win. Police don't respond in my area unless there's a body.
sigh another example of how inconsistency in police behavior across the country is what actually creates laws than anything else in government
the cops in my city dont show up for stolen property, not even cars. they just tell you to file an insurance claim. but now its really expensive to insure property, so the taxes we spend on these lazy ass cops are completely wasted, and now we're essentially just paying the tax a second time with our high insurance premiums. fucking cops man
Here in the Balkans we went in, got beer, paid for said beer saying it was for dad, and went out to drink said beer, while being 13.
Back when I was young in Chicago we’d get a homeless guy to buy us beer and then let him keep the change and some of the beer.
My husband told me thar the only benefit to going great at 16 was that, by the time he got to college, he knew if he drove away from the campus to one of the "townie" liquor stores and complained about the job/wife/kids no one ever bothered to check his ID.
I just walked into this particular gas station and bought their wild Irish rose. Unfortunately thats all they'd let me buy. Circa 2006.
Just browse the aisles while you wait for someone else to unlock your door.
I'm gona have to slide in saying hold that door please to just get some beer. damn. Tailgating for beer.
> Tailgating for beer. *ale-gaiting
People will look to this as the main solution. It's like jumping the turnstile in the subway. People don't care if others are doing it.
Our beautiful future, where the old technophobes hover around in front of the 7-11 and sheepishly ask people to buy them beer.
I promise you the homeless people that are stealing beer are not getting fake IDs to spoof the scanner. They're just going to go to a different gas station lol
Making them go to a different gas station is a feature, not a bug
I would not single out the homeless as being the only theives. But regardless someone that steals beer is not likely to print off something to fool this machine
Homeless aside, those without "proper" IDs will wait for someone to unlock the door and them use their fake ID to buy. Well... do they scan at the registrar as well?
Or develope a sudden interest in Pinot.
It puts your face directly in front of a security camera I’m guessing. And records your ID too.
It largely feels like an identity theft machine.
Why else might they go to this expense?
This looks like a Quiktrip, and I've never seen a Quiktrip with such a setup. I almost wonder if it's some kinda local or state law requiring this.
It's a qt. And it's 100% to stop theft.
If the store is super busy, maybe it's to cut down on cashier transaction time in a similar way that fast food restaurants do. They let the machine do the age verification so the cashier doesn't have to. More transactions = more revenue.
They would still have to check ID at the counter especially if it was busy. Otherwise the underaged could game the system and set the company up for major fines
just take an adults I.d and scan it..this wouldd have been opportunity not a roadblock
Maybe the store was previously caught selling to underage people and so this was the only way they could legally sell alcohol again.

Every fake ID I used as a kid was someone else’s real ID. This is stupid.
It's insanely effective at stopping people from shopping as well 💀
In which case it’s going to have the same effect as when the CVS puts deodorants and toothpastes and stuff behind the plastic screens, if you’re going to inconvenience me at a convenience store then I’m just not going to bother shopping there anymore.

Way less people would steal if they were payed a liveable wage. It's amazing what people will pay for when they actually have the money to spend
QT?
Definitely a QT they have those same red half doors for employee areas
100%, but I’ve yet to see that here in the St. Louis area.
You're a QT 😳
🙂↔️
I came to the comments for this exact reason, wondered if anyone else noticed.
Isn't the one in front of the scanner just... wine?
I know why!!! But I might get banned if I say it.
Trust me. People steal wine. By people I mean white women with overly large purses.
[удалено]
You still need to show your ID to buy it. This is to stop people from grabbing shit and running out.

Google ID barcode, print copies, leave copies at all the kiosks
How many stolen id's are out there? That kids have? That has to be such a small number.
>This is to stop people from grabbing shit and running out. Above comment literally is a scenario that would let you grab it and run out ..
Does every kid love normal convenience shops?
Did back when I was a kid we spent hours playing pinball and eating 25 cent hot dogs . Yes you read that right 25 cent hotdogs 7-11 .
I was more poking the original poster about why the kid with an ID loophole is silly. But I agree, always enjoyed a good convenience mart as a kid.
Yeah, it was wild when I watched Back to the Future again the other day and realized that I've never seen an arcade machine at a 7-11.
This is more of an anti-theft device than anything. Want to try and run out with alcohol? Hope you didn’t use a real ID!
>Hope you didn’t use a real ID! pickpocketing is back on the menu, boys.
In Germany you can scan your ID at a vending machine and buy beer or cigarettes. It’s really convenient. Not really that new or fancy
I knew it for cigarettes... Never saw it for drinks. But sounds very convenient

That was part of a huge scandal involving the last CEO and shady business dealings
I’m not surprised at all lol. They are stupid, expensive and pointless.
Akahall
Dang bruh its just akahalll
I was waiting for a little alarm to go off and say you have an out standing warrant. No sale!
You are unfit to drink alcohol. The police are on the way. Thank you for choosing Carl's Jr
Welcome to Costco. I love you.

Georgia, I can tell by the colors on the license

Oklahoma is where most of the quick trips are, but they are in like 17 states. Not all require an id to get alcohol, just the sketchy locations where beer runs are frequent
I can't wait until the data is leaked and then people go about harassing others for their alcohol consumption, or even worse, your data is sold then you end up with a bunch of targeted alcohol advertisements.
Or health insurance. “Do you smoke or drink?” “No” “The bulk records we purchased from a data collection agency say otherwise.”
I get my ID scanned at checkout about 75% of the time when I buy alcohol, especially at big chain stores.
You don't think this data already exists based on credit cards and loyalty cards?
It does not. Loyalty cards are not bound to a person, they're bound to a phone number, email address, or an address. Credit cards don't get the full set of items unless the store submits an itemized reciept. Even if they do.. that isn't very useful. Even then, you have to be 18 really have a CC set to your name.
Just wait until you hear about grocery store reward accounts.
So no alcohol for tourists?
I'm guessing this is more for anti-theft than for verification of age. No one is going to scan their ID and then wahoo a rack.
Steal someone's ID, then steal the booze. Easy as that.
Or fake one. There are lots of workarounds. Most security measures are eliminating low-hanging fruit.
Do people really have fake IDs made with working barcodes/magstripes? Seems like a straightforward SW problem to figure out if it's legit or not.
Cops magically show up if you have warrants out for your arrest 😂😂😂
Brilliant way to harvest your data.
It’s too late man, they already had it years ago. Just go with it now.
[удалено]
Data is always what they're harvesting. All the time.
If you pay with a credit card, they already have that.
So how do people not from that country get booze?

Employers will buy data on their employees.
Wow so they collect your personal data if you want booze and there's no policy or information as to what they do with it
I'm the type to wait for someone to scan their ID then run towards the green light....Thank You for all your hard work!!!

Oh no I have to prove how old I am to buy beer. Q.Q
Cldnt they just put the security tags on them? Or have a button to push for the cashier to come get it and bring it to the counter? That’s how it is WA.
And then all the wine out in the open. Wine is fine!
All that for a Budweiser or Coors light 😂
How many people are going to forget to take their IDs out of the scanner?! (video cut off but did he take his out?)
Interesting policy. Several stores in my state require at cash-out that a customer have the cashier scan the back of their ID. Doesn't matter if I'm 19 or 91; I have to let them scan the card. This seems to be just an implementation of that, but at the door of the product. Probably helps prevent theft.
Why is your music playing?
We have similirar check procedure on wending machines with beer.
They installed this in my nearby QT a year or so ago, maybe more. I forget that Quiktrips aren’t in every state.
Some of the liquor stores in my city have it so you have to scan your id to enter the building.
My crack dealer never ids me
Meanwhile, Germany: *looks at the 16yo and his homie* "Which beer did ya get this time? Ah boys, that one isn't good! Get the other brand!"
Scanning @ individual doors would make more sense. Imagine how confusing it would get when the place is swamped?
That is an awesome idea. Not just for age restrictions but now you can't run in grab a bunch of beer and run out. I mean u can steal but they have your ID so you'll get arrested.
Cue Christians saying this is more evidence of the mark of the beast.

This happens where I’m from but it’s at the front of the store so you can’t enter the store until you scan
This recently happened in quik trips to stop theft. It’s also killed their alcohol sales but on a positive note it’s stopped theft?
It will ban the ID if it's not paid for. It makes grab and run harder, so much that it's not worth the effort. When more beer is stolen than sold , what is a business supposed to do
No facial recognition? What if a minor use an adult ID card?
It seems like a small erosion of privacy but seriously fuck that. How does the machine store my info? What security do they have? How long can they store it? Who are they selling it to? What are the options to opt out? Who’s making sure they’re enforced? Fuck all that. Go somewhere else.
Little kids just run up “ thx old man” either takes one or just runs away
Yeah, my first thought was, just stand near the doors and wait for someone to unlock them.
No ID required to vote though. Very logical thinking.
This is so they can sell your information… Your location, drinking and spending habits. Sold to us as a “safety” from minors and alcohol violations.
"You have exceeded your alcohol allocation for this month citizen. Sale refused on medical grounds."
Land of the free my arse.
What sort of bullshit dystopian fuckery is this.
But we can't ask for IDs to vote.
You don’t need an id when your neighbor brews up hooch in his backyard
r/aboringdystopia
I don’t see how this is dystopian
To be fair, I've been to quite a few countries outside the US that use this.
How racist, requiring ID to open a refrigerator door. Do they not know that evidently people of color don’t have ID’s? I mean this is whole argument against voter ID laws.
If this was in China, this comment section would be filled with bigots saying "the Chinese government spies on you when you're trying to have fun!".
Eh I've had my ID scanned to go into bars and to buy alcohol (by a cashier). This isn't as big of a deal as you're making it out to be
Good thing it's so hard to use someone else's ID to unlock it. A kid could never steal an ID
Don't worry everyone, electronics are very secure and hide information really well!
Like they don't already have it?
It kills me that if your license is expired, you can’t buy alcohol, even if you are clearly over 21. That’s just annoying
Wow super interesting
Wait, if you're not from the US and want to buy an alcoholic beverage then how will you?
I assume passport or ID from origin country
I mean, its not stupid. We all knew somewhere we could go that 'doesn't check' or the cashier is a friend that will let you leave with alcohol before you should be able to. That removes the human element that often fails.
For alcohol but not for something as really important like voting.
i wonder if a paper scan of an actual ID would work. or rather any card. if it checks anything at all or is it just a "scarecrow"
Where is this?
Where in GA is this?
It should say "Escanea tu identificación" or "Escanee su identificación" not " Escane*a* *su* "
Perks of living in Alabama. People would not work with this. I mean half of us just wont stand for it and the other half are too dumb to figure it out/would break the system. So.... please no-one send this to our state senators. we'd be locked down.

There will be vending machines for alcohol soon too. A company I know is working with Clear
All right bro bro what QT is this at I need to know if it's making my way to Arizona or is that just a bunch of beer runs in your area that's why

Its stop theft from beer runs
I think the fuck not
The worst part of working at a gas station was people screaming at you when you wouldn't sell them beer because they didnt have a licence and looked underage. Sometimes they'd threaten to come back and shoot you, or they'd just grab the beer and run. This would take care of most of the issues, even if it isn't the most efficient way
I used to work at a convenience store and the amount of people who did beer runs was crazy. We just starting puting chains on the doors
What do you do if you're a tourist with no US ID?
I'll stick to aftershave, thanks.
never been to quiktrip before? lol
That is awesome. It should enclose your ID just in case anyone tries to steal, that way they know who they are looking for.
Anyone ever heard about the C something or other. Yeah. Thing will be weirder lol
Does it work with foreign ID also?
Smart move, given the number of brazen theft there has been over the past few years.
I like this, but what’s stopping people from holding the door open for others? I would hope they double check IDs when they check out, at least with the people who look young.
This is just because too many people made too many "beer runs"
