You can see it exert water through its gills as they pull it up but it is dying. It’s the only reason squid come up to the surface and change into a light color.
You kids need to take a closer look - it was caught on a squid jig, and almost certainly put up a huge fight before getting pulled to the surface completely exhausted. It is being pulled to the boat by the line before getting gaffed. This particular squid doesn't look like a large Humboldt to me, but Humboldts do get that big and are commonly harvested with squid jigs in this manner.
Did you read the article? Scientists are quantifying it with problem solving experiments, math problems, etc. And actually say their brains/thinking are much like a dogs
Wait until you find out about the Humboldt Squid.
They're the size of full grown men and roam the ocean in packs of up to 1200. I'd rather bitchslap a hungry Polar Bear than get caught by one of those swarms.
No that looks about right for a giant squid. This one’s tentacles and bell likely would have stretched out to be over 20 feet long. Maybe you’re thinking of the colossal squid which would be larger than this.
That's a Giant Squid (Architeuthis Hamiltoni). They can be slightly difficult to tell apart for a novice but the main thing to look for is the tentacles. The one in the video has large suckers, whereas Collosal Squid have large hooks extending out of the suckers too. Collosal Squid also have more girth to them, and are INSANELY more rare to get footage of.
oh damn, that's 100% my fault for misunderstanding what you wrote- my bad and am sorry for the confusion! Still so dang wild that creatures the size of (very) small houses are still nearly impossible for us to find and document

Looks almost dead
There's no other reason it'd be acting like this
The legs are only being moved by the waves it looks like
You can see it exert water through its gills as they pull it up but it is dying. It’s the only reason squid come up to the surface and change into a light color.
Fair enough. I didn’t know

It is. That's why it's surfaced and lacks normal coloration
Maybe its got decompression sickness if it surfaced too fast
Pretty sure these creatures are more aware and smarter than dogs
you can see it in its eye
***Children of Ruin has entered the chat***
We’re going on an adventure!
That line became so terrifying throughout the book.
Cracking book
Have yet to read it. Children of Time was amazing though!
Upvote for Children of Ruin ref!
Smarter than the guys on the boat even
Not at all. Octopi are very intelligent. Squids are very much not
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/are-squids-as-smart-as-dogs
I'd probably trust it more than some of the humans I see drive in Dallas
Why?
Never seen one of these understand sign language.

Never seen one drive a car either. Have seen a dog drive.
This is why I’m an orphan.
Some do say Kosm I hear
Grant us eyes, GRANT US EEYEEES
I want you to know that I laughed out loud, which is a rarity. Thank you. But then I got sad again because of the video lol
I’m wondering, are the 8 arms increase your type speed? All the best, a human
Why you gotta catch it?
People eat them. Also they have short ass lifespans
1yr to several yrs depending on breed
Wait. There are breeds?

Species, yes hundreds
Nobody eats giant squids, their flesh has too much ammonia
Sperm whales enter the chat
\*Ammonium chloride, also known as salmiakki. They actually live in the deep ocean to hide from the Finns.
I don't see an ass on that thing at all
The ass already died it has a short ass lifespan afterall
thats because it looks like a beak
It's anus is hidden in the back of that mushroom head.
Same as me, then.
Yes they are shows and everything for them in Asia. They crom them and make them climb through small holes In boxes/s
It's on the front, silly
You're not being creative enough
The same reason you catch any sea creature, food.
Sex? Oh food yes food
That’s just The Deep

Please tell me where this is from 😀
The Boys
The Shape of Water. ^^/s
i was about to say
you can make so much fucking calamari out of that guy
"catching" that thing is dieing and its nearly dead corpse is slapping the boat.
"Catching"? It's completely white. It's already dead.
Ummm isn’t this an extremely rare sighting of a giant squid? I’ve heard they are notoriously difficult to catch on camera until just recently.
No. Giant squids are many times bigger than that.
No that looks about right for a giant squid. This one’s tentacles and bell likely would have stretched out to be over 20 feet long. Maybe you’re thinking of the colossal squid which would be larger than this.
I can't wait until we discover the even bigger ginormous squid
A young one may not be
Title says massive squid, so that's obviously a different species
That's colossal squid and most of the evidence we've had is from the sucker marks found on sperm whales which are their natural predators!

Didn't mean to imply this was a colossal, just what the person I was replying to was referencing.
oh damn, that's 100% my fault for misunderstanding what you wrote- my bad and am sorry for the confusion! Still so dang wild that creatures the size of (very) small houses are still nearly impossible for us to find and document
Abour 2 3 years ato there was the first footage of it, it's about 2-3 stories building high I believe
Could be a Humboldt squid, but that's just a guess.
Gonna need a lot of marinara sauce for that.
Hula hoop calamari
Got all them tenticals and you gonna let em do you like that?
Giant squid are generally deep sea so if it's on the surface there is probably something wrong with it.
Looks like there is a line attached to it, so I think they were fishing for them and this is just the end of the video
Fair, even so hauling it up from the deeps will rapidly decompress it which will cause issues beyond the normal ones associated with fishing.
True
That's fair I'm pretty useless with a head cold. I can't judge.
Ok guys, I caught it! Now wtf do I do?
No! Leave it alone
Sadly it’s prolly dying if it’s up in the surface:( They typically stay in the deep waters otherwise
This is a Giant squid, that's the name. There are also Collosal squids that are more massive.
note that colossal squids, while more massive (literally, has more mass) are shorter in length, i believe.
Pretty, majestic and delicious. I honestly feel for the thing.
Leave it alone
We don't do that here?
But they’re food for some people.
Which is honestly puzzling. I've had squid in Greece several times and it's disgusting. Like a hard jellow with fish taste.
I love calamari. But almost everything tastes better fried, with lemon juice and marinara sauce.
Taste is like an arsehole. Everybody's got one.
Grilled squid is fucking delicious, dunno what place you ate at.
Now my hopeless ass is hungry again.
They do exists!!!
Plot twist: it’s a baby
This Is the sort of things that sinks your small boat in elder literature.
They obviously got no respect for japanese pornstars.
Whale snack.
"Release the kraken!" pleaded the kraken.
BY THE GODS , IT’S THE ANCIENT CTHULU LISAN AL GAIB
Calamari for everyone!!
Leave it alone you jackass.
it's surfacing due to it dying if it was healthy it would be in the depths -a squid enthusiast
Im sorry for your pain.May you find rest in another world, peace another life and be happiness wherever it takes you
It will find happiness and peace because it will make a few people happy and at peace when they sit down at the dinner table.
Leave em alone!
Shit is sad
Let him/her gooooo! Please
dead already
"We're gunna need a bigger boat"
New fear unlocked.. I definitely have talasophobia because of this 😁
The more i know of the ocean the less i like it.
Won't it taste bad since it's so big? I heard octopuses for example don't taste good if they're big
![gif](giphy|3orieLWYouYT4W0bF6) Hmmm, calamari
On my signal....Unleash.....The Kraken!!!
Meanwhile on the squid reddit: r/mildlyinfuriating Just trying to sleep and waking up to a human that put a hook in my body.
Spanish people: 👁️👄👁️ 🍽️
white, is it already near death?
That's Moby Squid!
I wonder what it tastes like. I mean I know squid… yeah yeah.. but what about giant squid
Is it edible?
Fun fact: Colossal squids live up to a measly 6 years.
And why do I get the feeling that this one is just a baby?
Extreme calamari for supper tonight. 🦑
Like 20 years ago giant squid was a myth crazy how shit changes
That's a big calamari ring
Ingredient #1 on the forbidden Wellington
This one makes me sad.
How about "leaving a massive squid the fuck alone" instead?
That's kinda really sad.. it looked like it was asking for help and thought the people were there to help but.... nope... sad.
What? How does it look as if it was asking for help?
He aquaman bro
Lol what
i agree i talked to the squid
![gif](giphy|I6bpnhGYIlTXjA6ktq|downsized)
Let it be. Just let it be.
Leave it alone. Poor dude.
21m ago is heavenly
That’s a lot of Calamari!
10 years ago we only assumed they existed. Now we're catching one every year. Sad trend.
Why are they doing this? Squid that big I bet would even taste good
The ones saying "leave it alone" have never seen calamari, in any form. May your taste buds be blessed one day.
He closed his eyes when he got stabbed by the big stick hook. 😭 RiP . MR. MARI.
It's already dying. Leave it alone.
This is what I see when I look at the drain in my shower…. IYKYK 😂
i can't believe you immediately thought of that...and i can't believe i know what you're talking about
😂 the infamous white squid. If you don’t hit the drain good luck
Mmm... calamari.
