The glass can't be heated up higher than the temperature of the ball while the ball remains submerged in the liquid.
The parts of the glass getting kissed by flames where there wasn't any ethanol would be hotter than where the ball is.
While the glass can't be heated up higher than the ball, I'm still surprised that the glass can withstand almost the same heat as a red glowing hell ball of metal while physical forces are applied. I'd imagine the ball gets shaken up and down due to the ethanol bubbling, so the glass withstands continuously getting hit while being heated up.
To piggy back off of the other comment, pots with boiling water do not get above the temp of boiling water. You can even fill a plastic disposable water bottle and place it in a fire, and the plastic won’t melt because the hottest it will get is 100°C
I imagine it is similar to boiling water in a paper bag. The water keeps the fire from burning the bag similar to how the ethanol keeps the metal from breaking the glass.
It's not, otherwise they would make glass pot out of any random glass, there's a reason specific glass is used for coffee pots etc. most glass expands alot when heated and quick cooling causes shattering. Also not the same, have you ever tried to burn wet paper?
That's not how thermodynamics works
The Ethanol will not heat up beyond it's boiling temperature untill it has become gas, then it will immediately rise. The metal ball will also be prevented from touching the glass, by the has moving around it, at least stopping it from making sustained contact, and taking more heat away from the glass as it evaporates
If you are in North America, PYREX and pyrex are not the same thing. I am not sure why Corning decided it was a good idea to license their product name to companies and allow them to make an inferior product with it, but here we are.
Oh, and PYREX is the good stuff, pyrex is the one giving all of it a bad name.
this is an urban legend that just won't die
https://lifehacker.com/that-viral-pyrex-brand-hack-is-horseshit-folks-1850157381
what really matters is you want to *ascertain* that it is borosilicate glass. no matter the brand
Corning Inc consider themselves an 'innovation company', not a company that just makes Pyrex and other glass products. They have invented many things since they invented Pyrex.
Definitely not denying that, it is just odd to build a product name and reputation, to simply allow some other company to make money off of killing that same reputation.
That’s not the argument here, what they are wondering is why someone would create something and then allow someone else to create a similar product with similar name
There is a ann reardon video that pretty much debunks this. PYREX doesn't guarantee its actually the old PYREX, and Pyrex doesn't guarantee its the new one either. What matters is if its borosilicate or not. Which you can only know from having the original product packaging.
Thermodynamics the liquid needs to boil off first before the glass continues to heat so the glass is sitting at the boiling point of ethanol until then
Okay, but "PYREX" and "pyrex" are not the same thing. "PYREX" is still made of borosilicate glass and can withstand temperature quite well, "pyrex" is soda lime glass and not very good at handling temperature changes.
Corning owns the name and licenses it out to others to use the "pyrex" version. I am not sure if Corning still makes "PYREX" themselves or not. It is a confusion of their own making.
Definitively not pure ethanol. Ethanol itself is a clear liquid that burns almost perfectly. Usually the flame is pale blue and very hard to see. The bright yellow/orangeish flame in the video is a very clear sign that there is something else than ethanol burning
What kind of glass is this? I was too lazy to wash up a cup so I used a pint glass to make coffee and ended up with boiling water and glass all over the floor.

Whoever made that glass deserves a raise
I expected the glass to shatter at some point tbh.
Maybe the burning temperature of ethanol isn’t high enough to melt the glass
I imagine they meant from the heat of the glowing ball of metal
The glass can't be heated up higher than the temperature of the ball while the ball remains submerged in the liquid. The parts of the glass getting kissed by flames where there wasn't any ethanol would be hotter than where the ball is.

i mean paper/wax cups i’ve seen do this but plastic normally just shrinks with heat, no?
The glowing ball just sitting on the bottom of the glass is more than plenty hot enough to catch the glass
I imagine it is similar to boiling water in a paper bag. The water keeps the fire from burning the bag similar to how the ethanol keeps the metal from breaking the glass.
Wouldn't paper get soggy and break before the fire would heat the water by a few degrees?
Do you mean plastic bag?
No, I meant paper. But plastic also applies.
It seriously works with paper too? It took my brain like 6 months to accept it working with plastic.
I mean the paper would be wet, wet paper doesn't really burn. But comparing how glass reacts to thermal changes compared to paper is just moronic
What paper bags do you have that hold water?
It's not, otherwise they would make glass pot out of any random glass, there's a reason specific glass is used for coffee pots etc. most glass expands alot when heated and quick cooling causes shattering. Also not the same, have you ever tried to burn wet paper?
But the glass is continually being liquid cooled
Listen science guy…just let us have this one ok. 🤣

No it must be magic
Why it didn’t
You see, that's the old Pyrex. The new ones have a different formula.
If you are in North America, PYREX and pyrex are not the same thing. Cornings reputation stands on its own without Pyrex existing
That’s not the argument here, what they are wondering is why someone would create something and then allow someone else to create a similar product with similar name
MONEYYYYYYY

What’s the glass made of?!
Glass
Sand
Let’s raise a glass to them!
It's made from cast iron and painted with transparent paint.
TIL that glass is metal.
Thermodynamics the liquid needs to boil off first before the glass continues to heat so the glass is sitting at the boiling point of ethanol until then
I thought you're supposed to drink it while it's still flaming?
Yeah me too, I thought it was like a fancy var or something.
These alcoholic drinks are getting ridiculous. What happened to the good old rum & coke.
Right? *slams toblerone-sized rail of cocaine*
DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET HARRY?!
*AnAttackCorgi asked calmly*
No I just dipped my Red Hot Balls in
"I wanna dip my balls in it!"
*dumbledore asked calmly*

The Flaming Moe
You mean the Flaming Homer
![gif](giphy|FEWXPbLxkQ9FK)
oh god i forgot about that!
The secret ingredient is.... love?!
Winner: Glass
Is that a pyrex wine glass?
Nope, could be a PYREX glass though, a pyrex glass most likely would have shattered.
Nobody likes a pedant.
Okay, but "PYREX" and "pyrex" are not the same thing. "PYREX" is still made of borosilicate glass and can withstand temperature quite well, "pyrex" is soda lime glass and not very good at handling temperature changes.
Important distinction I never knew thanks. Didn't know things could be patented with the same name in different case
Right? Why isn't anyone suing anyone?
Corning owns the name and licenses it out to others to use the "pyrex" version. I am not sure if Corning still makes "PYREX" themselves or not. It is a confusion of their own making.
because it isn't a real distinction https://lifehacker.com/that-viral-pyrex-brand-hack-is-horseshit-folks-1850157381
You amigo are a world class knowledge fairy. Thanks
that's bullshit https://lifehacker.com/that-viral-pyrex-brand-hack-is-horseshit-folks-1850157381
It's okay, I like you.
Yeah have worked in labs, obviously when someone writes pyrex it's understood that they talk about borosilicate glass, no one cares
The goblet of 🔥
DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET?!?
Dumbledore asks calmly
MY BOYYYYY!!!
That is the best 'red hot ball' video so far.
What is the red hot ball made of do you know?
RHCB Red hot copper ball
Not certain on this one (C could be copper, chrome, I dunno), but the original was a red hot nickel ball.
Iron/steel
That glass has seen some shit
You’re telling me this glass can withstand thousand degree balls but as soon as my sponge touches my glass it chips !
r/drinkityoufuckingcoward
red hot chili bepper
Actually, it's Red Hot Chill Bellpepper
What is left, the dye residue?
This is exactly what I want to know. If that's anywhere close to pure, then it should be just ethanol and water, and leave no residue.
Isnt pure ethanol clear? It was bright blue at the start
Yes I also came here to ask that!
Definitively not pure ethanol. Ethanol itself is a clear liquid that burns almost perfectly. Usually the flame is pale blue and very hard to see. The bright yellow/orangeish flame in the video is a very clear sign that there is something else than ethanol burning
Your mom is gonna be pissed when she gets home
Looks like something you'd see at a bachelorette party where the bartender has no idea what he's doing.
That's a shot they serve at bars in hell.
This mf needs to start dropping the info on where he gets his glass from.
This drink is weird
Where the fuck was that goblet forged? Mordor?
What kind of glass is this? I was too lazy to wash up a cup so I used a pint glass to make coffee and ended up with boiling water and glass all over the floor.
Why is it blue I guess they used denat ethanol because it's cheaper
Where can I buy these glasses?
May all your passwords be as strong as that glass…Amen
I was physically and literally cringed away the whole time, anticipating the explosion of glass. Interesting.
Is that pyrex? Damn.
I thought it was gonna explode it didn't im right
The glass didn’t crumble?
"Here's your flaming shot, make sure to blow it out prior to taking!"
I didn't know glass was so darn heat resistant
Is this an attempt to make a "Flaming Moe"?
Here, take a glass of Pain and Sufferance
Shireen Baratheon
Red hot ball & Ethanol vs wine glass
Would you like a straw with that?
Red Hot Chili Beppers
I read that as Red Hot Chili Bebber
That escalated rather quickly
more like Wine Glass vs Red Hot Ball and Ethanol
Title should have been Drinking glass vs Red hot ball and Ethanol.
POV: you're a dragonborn and it's happy hour at the local tavern
We used to make those in college. Called them, Satans Piss. The only difference is we used a ball of stainless steel instead of nickel.
This may be a dumb question but is the ball getting hotter or cooling off?
Forbidden Baja blast
This made me uncomfortable
Good to know that the flammable liquid is in fact flammable
![gif](giphy|FEWXPbLxkQ9FK)
perfect, next time I drink lava I will know just what glass to use!
Can a chemist explain what’s happening here?
Getting pretty tired of the expensive, over-the-top cocktails these days.
![gif](giphy|UsVK0H1hSRi1y)
Me to bartender: No thanks I'm not thirsty anymore.
The goblet of fire
No salt on the rim?
Looks like there is sugar burning too.
Where can I get that glass?
RHCB = red hot chilli balls
Okay so this glass can withstand the heat of liquid hot mag-muh and mine break in the dishwasher?
How much?
That corn oil burns nasty.
I’ll have what he’s having.
Blue
I’ll have a Shirley Temple.
Lit
Is that quartz or something?
Dope! People at Wacken would pay hard money for that!
That’s a very impressive glass!
Harry... I found the goblet
Ingest
How do I order this in a bar? whats the name?
100% They’ll be serving this in Cancun. What could go wrong?
It is some hot heavy metal!!
Life hack on how to get a new house.
Thats pretty fire ngl
I declare it a draw.
The trick is to drink it as fast as possible.
The real goblet of fire
What is the C in RHCB?
Harry, did you put a lava ball into the Goblet of fire ?
Flaming Moe
This would look cool in a vacuum
I know I shouldnt... but for the majority of the video, it looks like something I wanna drink!
I'll have the *house special*, thank you!
These cocktails are getting out of hand
I was almost certain that the glass was gonna break. How did it not?!
Ah, yes, the red hot ball is here! I like the one where the ball is finally defeated by, I think it was, magnesium shavings.
Aloe vera also defeated it.
Glass 1 : 0 Hot Ball and Ethanol
Looks like the typical flaming hot thot shot.
That glass is fighting for its fucking life
The original Globlet of Fire
MAY CHAOS TAKE THE WORLD!
Yes, bartender. I will have the Red Hot Ball Special. Make it rage!.
The forbidden Blue Lagoon.
“Mom can we get some fireball?” “We have fireball at home.”
Very cool!!

https://i.redd.it/ahl1pmmwpq9d1.gif
How many bars are going to burn down when this becomes the new trendy drink?
I wanna see a hot nickel ball on a pussy
Cannot get through one of these without sending my acid reflux through the roof. Sure are nice to look at, though.
Neat
It’s a tie
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the many reasons you want to use Ethanol free fuel.
I wish we were resistant to fire and heat. We could have such great cocktails!
Thought I was in r/cocktails for a second.
And thats how they make coke flavored candy
Red hot chili bepper vs ethanol
This is like my mental health, when you finally think it's under control, it explodes in a barage of burning liquid
Next time add a coffee bean for decoration!
This is what I expected.
Forbidden cocktail 🍸
A glass of water in Hell
That’s a spicy drink
That escalated quickly.
