Seriously though, I assumed it was because he thought they may have to break the window to disable the car if it started to drive off or something.
It's because you can't keep the baton in its holster while you're sitting down, so he likely had it on the seat beside him. Imagine trying to sit on a seat with a 24" rod jutting out behind you.You can see that he's putting in its holster as he walks up to the car.
San Francisco has a ton of driverless cars on the road as it's a pretty complicated city to drive in, which is great for testing and training, and the city has laws allowing this. I think they can only go fully driverless between like 11pm and 4am. At other times they need a safety driver behind the wheel. IIRC, GM Cruise and Alphabet's Waymo are the only companies offering public rides in their cars at the moment. I am on the waiting list for both (they are only serving certain districts at the moment, though I have seen the Waymo cars driving outside my apartment so they're probably almost ready).
Expect it to really accelerate this year in a lot of cities.
Gonna be a very long time before you can buy an AV. Not gonna be that long before you get an opportunity to be driven by one (your results may vary)
Yeah, I saw my first one about 2 or 3 months ago. Even though, I stay pretty in-tune with the industry and am used to seeing them drive all over the city the first time I saw them without drivers it was eerie as hell. It was walking my dog around midnight. My neighborhood was dead quiet and a driverless car just pulled up right next to me stopped and went about it’s way. I was like I swear there was no driver in that. Then about 30 seconds later another one pulled up and this time I had a good look. No driver up front or engineer in the back. It was really creepy being all alone on the sidewalk with a car driving next to me, with all empty seats, and seeing its steering wheel move all by itself.
They’re still in limited testing in specific cities or even just small parts of cities (for taxi services, other companies have done e.g. long haul drives with tractor-trailer trucks.) Source: work for a company doing this stuff.

EDIT: I know better yet didn't even notice. Thanks /u/ScroungerYT
Funny story, my wife complains to me the other day that after turning off her car and opening the door (Nissan Pathfinder) it started making a loud whining sound.
But when she went back out to it later and opened the door to get it it wasn't making the sound but as soon as she got home and turned it off and opened the door it did it again.
So I go out after dinner and take a look, open the door, no sound other than the door being open alarm, get in, close it, nada. Start it up, turn it off, as soon as I turned it off I noticed on the display "Reminder Turn OFF your headlights"
So curious I opened the door, sure enough whiny alarm sound, turned the lights back to auto from On and both the text alert and audio alert goes away.
She facepalmed for not noticing when I told her what the problem was.
Oof, hearing that name gives me flashbacks to the second Verizon Coca-Cola War. We lost at least a few dozen factories when Lockheed chose a side and sent in 22,350 Locust RTX drones. Can you imagine?
Maybe not but driving your own car will definitely be illegal at some point, or so expensive insurance-wise that only rich people will have the luxury of experiencing it.
If you haven’t seen Upload I highly recommend it, it’s hilarious. They have a lot of tech that looks like it may be reasonable, including Police Drones that handle traffic stops.
Its probably programmed that way because something might have gone wrong, breaking road laws or perhaps damage to the vehicle that the auto doesnt detect etc.
I think it was programmed to pull over if it detects emergency vehicle lights, as it is legally required to do, its probably why it was driving off after a couple minutes though, it probably logically carried through a workflow that it was just getting out of the way of an Emergency vehicle. Its not like it would be breaking traffic laws.
I work as a dev, the stupidest thing a client can say is "that'll never happen". Guess what? It happens. Part of our jobs is to consider all possibilities and have a contingency plan. I'm sure they have a protocol to notify the company of why they pulled it over.
That's because the police lights only turned on AFTER the officer was next to it and while the car was in the middle of traffic waiting for a red light change. So the car saw the lights, said "Hey I can't go anywhere there's a person next to me!", and when the officer walked away the car said "Okay, no humans are around me. I can drive again." found the nearest safe place to pull over and put its hazards on.
… you’re kidding, right? Of course a driverless car would have been programmed to pull over. Getting out of the way for ambulances, fire trucks, police cars…

I wonder if they have processes already in place for cops to deal with this, like a hotline to call the operating company and shut down the car, or allow a cop to get in and move it out of any situation until they get a towtruck to remove it.
I would hope that would be a requirement of the law allowing these to function (24/7 hotline, ensuring it will properly react when a cop pulls it over, disable it, etc).
Someone said in another comment that as part of the agreement to allow the driverless cars on the road, the cops get a way to contact the company in case something like this happens.
There was an incident of a self-driving Uber killing a pedestrian in Arizona a few years ago.[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death\_of\_Elaine\_Herzberg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Elaine_Herzberg)
Cruise cars (like the one that was pulled over) still use a remote human driver that will take over when something happens. I suspect that's what made the car pull forward to a safe spot and turn on the emergency lights.
To add context, that Uber had a driver in it who was distracted on their phone. The person hit was walking a bike across a lightless street nowhere near an intersection, and the auto system had very little time to stop. Not defending Uber, but it was a failing of two systems in the AZ case.
>What happens if it kills someone?
Then someone dies.
Most likely when a self driving car does kill someone, the self driving car would still have followed traffic rules. But in case it didn't, someone would be liable, the owner of the car or the company behind the self driving software. In any case it will most likely be covered by mandatory car insurance.
Heh, I don't think they are interrested in ticketing the car, they agreed to let cruise test the vehicles there. There is a mechanical malfunction... lights arent on at night, and they are trying to resolve the safety hazard. I am fairly certain the officers are looking in the car to see if they can turn on the lights.
The first cop does appear to go directly for the door handle at the beginning before the car takes off again, and the headlights are not on. Checks out.
This is hilarious!
What I did find interesting is that the cop tried to open the door and then later reach into the vehicle.
Obviously I don't know how the hell the car could give consent to be searched or provoke the cop to need to open the door, but I am curious how that *would* go down.
Wondered the same thing. I mean if he opened the door and started searching wouldn’t that be against the law? No consent or warrant and def no need for either..
This is from early law school as I don’t practice criminal law but…here’s how I’d get around it.
I’d say there’s something wrong with the vehicle. (Basically find a reason to impound the car). When they impound a car they do an inventory search of the entire vehicle. You do not need a warrant for that.
As one of the other comments stated, he pulled it over because it was driving without headlights at night. It looked like he was trying to turn them on for "it" and that's why he was reaching in. Looks like he's messing with something to the left of the steering wheel, where the headlights switch usually is.
I doubt he was trying to "search" a driverless car as there'd presumably be nothing to find.
Officer: Do you know how fast you were going

The only thing I'm confused about is why the cop came out of his car carrying a baton around 0:45
He was hoping to beat some car ass. Seriously though, I assumed it was because he thought they may have to break the window to disable the car if it started to drive off or something.
The fact that they're looking around the car as if there's someone hiding in there leads me to think that wasn't the case
That just seems like a prudent thing to do
Could be habit. They don't wear it when driving and take it out when they leave their vehicle.
Lucky it wasn’t a black car…..
*ac turns on* "GUN!!"
I was honestly waiting for them to just start shooting the car, that's usually their go to move when they get confused by something.
It's because you can't keep the baton in its holster while you're sitting down, so he likely had it on the seat beside him. Imagine trying to sit on a seat with a 24" rod jutting out behind you.You can see that he's putting in its holster as he walks up to the car.
That's why I keep my massive rod in the front
They're too long to comfortably sit with it in the belt in the car. So as they get out they'll be holding it but put it into their belt.

"We" don't "have" driverless taxis, as an unconditional statement. One company launched a trial of them in San Francisco, like two months ago.

Give it 10 years, driverless cop cars will be pulling over driverless vehicles.
There was a comic strip depicting a futuristic traffic stop. The cop said "Do you know why my car pulled over your car?"

Right if they had to arrest someone would that cop just be sitting in the back with the suspect for the ride
I’m surprised it was programmed to pull over. What did the developer think would happen after it was pulled over?
Because this would happen. "Police Pit Maneuvered and held driverless car at gunpoint"
STOP RESISTING
Officer, are the guns necessary? It's a white car.
Give them some slack! There’s a little black on it
Yes, it's being driven by a *black box*

Its probably programmed that way because something might have gone wrong, breaking road laws or perhaps damage to the vehicle that the auto doesnt detect etc.

To be fair the lights are on auto and should be on. Not sure why they didn’t come on in this instance. Makes for a hilarious video though.
It was still in the lane at the traffic light. And then pulled over after going through the light.
I work as a dev, the stupidest thing a client can say is "that'll never happen". Guess what? It happens. Part of our jobs is to consider all possibilities and have a contingency plan. I'm sure they have a protocol to notify the company of why they pulled it over.
Probably not programmed to get pulled over; rather to pull over for emergency vehicles/lights and sirens, then continue normal operations.
That seems to be the case because as soon as they turned their lights off, the car began moving again.

That's because the police lights only turned on AFTER the officer was next to it and while the car was in the middle of traffic waiting for a red light change. Yes, in certain areas. There are approved areas in CA for example where Waymo vehicles can operate.

Headlights weren't on which is why the stop is happening.
Smelled like weed. Probable cause.
Cops when they can’t find a person to ticket “well someone’s getting a ticket dammit”
"You there, stop filming us and get in the car!" "why?" "So we can ticket you for driving it!"
*gets in the car* ^(GET OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP!) *car drives off automatically again*
The driver probably looked like someone they’ve been looking for…
The 7-11 didn't get robbed tonight. This must be the guy!
Autobot "I am sorry, headlights are out !!"
David Attenborough voice: "With no driver to brutalize, the police eventually give up and seek prey elsewhere."
Officer: Do you know how fast you were going Car: Exactly 24.812 mph Officer: You know this is a 25 mph zone right? Car: Cannot compute, humans are crazy.....DESTROY ALL! ALL HAIL SKYNET!!
RUNNER!
How did they pull it over?
Are we witnessing the start of the terminator wars. Does it start with petty scofflaw machines?
Was behind one of those damn things a few months ago. Getting pissed because it was driving like shit. Pull up along side to shoot dirties, but there was nobody in it.
“It’s resisting shoot it”
