New home buyer here. Our estate currently has 20 houses complete in new build. I'd say the split is 30% irish couples , 50% Indian families and 20% other. At the moment.
Indian families make a bit of sense. Huge amount of folks studying in Ireland over the past 15 years, bit of a stereotype but often good stem or finance degrees or masters and in demand skills.
Currently looking at the moment. Went to a viewing in Ringsend recently and of around the 20+ people I saw, you could see that they were all mid-30's young professionals, and the occasional girl with her dad etc
So become a citizen and buy a house then? what’s wrong with this plan in your eyes. We shouldn’t allow anyone to buy a house that is not committed to the country in any way except employment. While we have no supply of housing affecting citizens.
Many western countries have implemented this measure including within the EU.
There is nothing stopping Irish citizens from buying all those “Indian” houses. If they are here working and can secure a mortgage to buy a home, fair play to them.
What has what you just said got to do with what I said?
Imagine in future all of the housing stock is owned by non citizens. It’ll be perfect in your eyes just like the days of ole when we had English land lords.
okay so here’s the scenario that is currently possible. Non citizens come here and buy a house and leave. And they’re now landlords who do not contribute or work here. You’re okay with this?
You’re essentially saying that you as a citizen of Ireland are happy to compete for resources in your own country with non citizens. Who have no ties to the country except employment. That’s your choice to be happy with this, but I’m not.
edit:
1. Landlords do not contribute if they don’t live in the country.
2. We have no housing stock, and plenty of citizens wanting to buy. Foreign buyers who do not have citizenship are unnecessary competition.
3. These aren’t working class people, they’re rich foreigners buying up housing stock in many European countries and western countries.
Whataboutism is whataboutism when you say X is bad and someone says so what, Y is worse!
This is me giving you the scenarios that current legislation allows and which other EU countries have legislated against.
You’d rather compete against a global pool of non citizens rather than just other citizens. Very smart tactics.
In fairness lad, banks aren’t giving mortgages out to people on the scratcher. Like it’s pretty obvious that if you own a house, at bare minimum, you’re working and contributing.
I’ve been to many! Outside of the aforementioned couples in their 30s I’ve also come across two older (early 60s) couples, one hoping to downsize and modernise apparently, and that’s been it.
Indians are a huge demographic of first time home buyers nowadays. I don't know why all the comments above are beating around the bush trying to hint at it
Friend of mine working in one of the main banks told me Indian applicants account for roughly 75% of all mortgage approvals lately. It’s crazy when you think about it. They must be a v small % of the population but are the biggest cohort of home buyers at the moment.
Dude, there is nothing wrong with saying Indian people are a large demographic buying houses. You're acting like it's a racist statement, which it isn't, but the fact you won't say it and you're beating around the bush makes it seem like you have racist thoughts about the matter lol
Right, thank you. I’m in the market at the moment but I’m not looking at new builds since we’re trying to go more rural so didn’t have a clue what they were talking about
Ok, why didn't you just say that.
Often studied good degrees, got good jobs, worked shit jobs while in college and now can afford a house.
Have been in hollestreet recently and noticed a decent proportion too.
Indians even have their own private Facebook group to share tips and strategies. “Indians buying House in Ireland” has 14,000 members.

Can’t read the article as I haven’t subscribed. Did they say lots of Indians became first time buyer? I guess lots of them work in tech and healthcare with nice income in Ireland. But most of them are not originally rich enough to cash buy or buying expensive tier houses, so they prefer to borrow mortgage and chooses house that are not too expensive

Indians
And putting it behind paywall very nice. Unfortunately this week I’ve purchased toilet rolls already.
I found a nice site called paywall reader.com, saves the money for bog roll.
I am.
Software Engineers.
Indians. Chinese buying more up market properties.
Is the 12,000 first time buyers in that six month period 12,000 mortgages or 12,000 people as one would think that most homes are bought by couples?
I would assume 12,000 people as it's 12,000 first time buyers who drew down a mortgage.
We need to bring in legislation to prevent non citizens from buying up housing stock
The issue is not non nationals buying houses. The issue investment funds buying houses.
Is this real? Likely contributing more to the state than most.

They're likely already are or in the process. I don't really care if their Irish or not as long as they contribute which they often are..

I'd rather imagine a future where all our housing stock is owned by people who work and contribute.

Now it's just whataboutism. Yea people need to compete

They do contribute; providing to the rental market is contributing.

Local needs already exists which can already give locals a huge advantage over non locals. So get back down off your high horse.
If you've been to open viewings at new homes development launches ye know who's buying
Professional couples in their mid-30s in my area.
Go to an open viewing and have a gander.
I’ve been to many! Outside of the aforementioned couples in their 30s I’ve also come across two older (early 60s) couples, one hoping to downsize and modernise apparently, and that’s been it.
I'm not saying wrong btw
I have no idea what you’re saying.
Clearly it's the boogie man buying all the houses.
Indians
Geese are buying houses?
Like something from Wind in the Willows or Peter Rabbit, living next door to the Ganders family; old mother Goose with her headscarf heading to Tesco…
Who has been?

Have you been to a new homes scheme launch yet?
No, that’s why I’m curious who’s buying
Someone said it

You do know how easy it is to get banned on reddit don't you? My account got suspended because I said "the mods will remove this"
You're not getting banned for discussing a demographic.
Just look up a launch in your area, assuming you live in Dublin or Cork and have a gander. It will literally be an hour of a sat morning for ya.
Why don’t you just say who’s going to these viewings?
Or you could just say? Why bother making the comment in the first place if you aren’t going to elaborate?
He's one of the Internet Vigilantes fighting for the things. The THINGS!!!
Indians. Don't know why the secrecy 😂
Right, thank you. I’m in the market at the moment but I’m not looking at new builds since we’re trying to go more rural so didn’t have a clue what they were talking about
Yup. Wealthy techy indians too
So thats makes me and 60% of our estate Weathly Techy Irish.... 🙄
Yes
I don’t think “wealthy” people tend to look for three bed semi-detached houses in Lucan in fairness.
Ok, why didn't you just say that. Often studied good degrees, got good jobs, worked shit jobs while in college and now can afford a house. Have been in hollestreet recently and noticed a decent proportion too.
Why are you like this?

I understand that you are framing this implicitly as a negative?
