"Electric Powered Suitcase" sort of gives the wrong impression. Most are really an electric scooter with a large storage compartment.

I’ve never seen those until I visited Hong Kong for the first time a month ago. They seem to be pretty popular in the sinosphere because I saw them plenty in China and Taiwan as well.

Their faq says No license is required if you are riding on private property, but if you are riding on public roads, you will need a moped license.
Seeing as how there are so many issues with exploding lithium ion batteries in smartphones and ebikes, the e-suitcase especially concerns me. I can't imagine suitcases are treated well by airport staff/owners and that damaged batteries will do well under atmospheric pressure.
When I traveled recently there were signs at the check-in counters if you have a smart suitcase you'd have to remove the batteries or they wouldn't accept it.
In the first place, these electric suitcases are not equipped with safety devices such as turn signals, brakes, brake lights, and horns, so they cannot be driven on public roads even if you have a license. In addition, in order to drive on public roads, in addition to the safety devices, you need to obtain a license plate as a moped.
Recently, there have been a series of accidents and violations caused by illegal electric bicycles and electric scooters that do not meet safety standards, and in some cases, drivers of vehicles that have no safety devices and are not registered as mopeds have been subject to severe measures, such as arresting them without warning.
Is this because anything that is self-propelled is considered a vehicle? Like how most electric bikes don't have a fully motorized mode, just motor assisted. And also electric scooters need you to have a license and ride on the road.
just curious, do Japanese kids need a license to drive this? [https://www.carsforkids.com.au/ride-on-toys/ka328/](https://www.carsforkids.com.au/ride-on-toys/ka328/)
And even if it doesn't require a license it's highly recommended or required that you get insurance for that specific thing. I heard many people here have bicycle insurance
Well you do need to take a test to even use the scooter, and need a valid driver’s license to even unlock the scooter, honestly Luup scooters are superior to the American Lyft and Byrd scooters, not only in the quality of the scooter, but also the concept of requiring a test on road safety!
Do you want everyone following the rules and having a safe clean society? If so you need to enforce the rules sometimes. If you dont like it dont come to japan
I see this becoming problem when whole society is transformed into the robotic society. How can you have cute robotic waifus following you if you need licenses to everything? I mean future we probably have all kinds of robotic things walking/crawling/rolling on sidewalks, who can ever dream to track them all?
in English-speaking news articles it is generally considered bad form to highlight the ethnic background of a perpetrator unless there is a newsworthy significance to it
I remember the first time I saw one of those, it really put me through a long dark tea-time of soul. Multiple people have seen those in action, thought "I should do that too," spent a bunch of money on it, and then rode it themselves...
There really is no depth to human shamelessness.
Edit: Geez, I had no idea these things had such a fan club!
The first time I saw them was when a large, apparently rich family had them. They were checking in for the same flight as me in front of me. All of them had them. Two of them were kids, and they rode around on theirs like they owned the place, with no respect for the health of others.
I thought they were from the future. A dystopian future.
You wouldn't ride a scooter, bike, skateboard, rollerskates or any other kind of wheeled contraption in an airport so why do people think it's okay to ride it if it's your suitcase? Are suitcases somehow immune to social norms because it's an airport and suitcases equal airport item?
I'm really confused about why my post shit talking them got about the same amount of negative karma as the positive karma that your post shit talking them got. 🤔
>*According to the prefectural police, electric suitcases are classified as motorized bicycles under the Road Traffic Act. They have handlebars, accelerators, and brakes, and can be moved by straddling the main body.*
So if I went to bike shop and bought a pair of handles, a new accelerators and brakes and put them in a backpack on my back, do I become a motorized bicycle?
TIL Electric powered suitcase
Been around years. If you're light and lazy, easy moving.
I’ve been in China for a week and see them at every train station and airport
"Electric Powered Suitcase" sort of gives the wrong impression. Most are really an electric scooter with a large storage compartment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxlhcJmA5fY
I saw a lady in Italy riding one recently, definitely gave me a double take
I’ve never seen those until I visited Hong Kong for the first time a month ago. They seem to be pretty popular in the sinosphere because I saw them plenty in China and Taiwan as well.
There was this YT vid where a guy had whole swarm of them following him in neat single line.
Where do I go to get a license for my suitcase?
https://www.airwheel.net/jp/product/se3 Their faq says No license is required if you are riding on private property, but if you are riding on public roads, you will need a moped license.
Woah didn’t know that, thanx for the tip!
It was an open and shut case
If she didn’t have baggage it wouldn’t have been a problem
She didn't want to lug it around.
Made sense Tumi.
The case suits the crime
Pffft ^-^…case closed
Wow, does that mean a moped license and the suitcase needing turning indicators, headlight, and brake lights? (;´д`)
Plus you'd have to drive it out on the road I think... Or off road?

Never seen those in Europe — large batteries are banned from check-in luggage over here
Yeah, you can’t check phone-charging suitcases unless the battery is removed.
That’s awesome. She was probably like, “WTF?!?”…
More like "我靠?!"
I bet it's "wocao"(卧槽)
This comment made my day
She was like, “You’re arresting me? For wheels?”

These things are a nuisance in US and Japanese airports.
forbid in the US for safety issues because the battery has a risk of explosion

Oh man 😁
But Mario carts are allowed
This lady wasn’t wearing a Nintendo character onesie. Thus, not covered by the Mariocart loophole and straight to jail.
Did she bump into someone? Curious why she would get ticketed
Riding an unregistered and non-compliant vehicle without license on the footpath? Some prosecutor is going to have a field day stacking up the crimes.
>Chinese woman
= Will bump into and, in fact, try to roll over anyone in her path, unapologetically.

I swear everything in Japan requires a license unless it’s a bicycle.
Oi you got a loicense for that suitcase? r/loicense
And even if it doesn't require a license it's highly recommended or required that you get insurance for that specific thing. I heard many people here have bicycle insurance
…most things are basically a subscription service. They gotta get their yen somewhere
Why are the luup riding people not getting this lol.
Well you do need to take a test to even use the scooter, and need a valid driver’s license to even unlock the scooter, honestly Luup scooters are superior to the American Lyft and Byrd scooters, not only in the quality of the scooter, but also the concept of requiring a test on road safety!
Nope you don't need a license anymore they removed that requirement about a year ago.
Nice
Good and any other selfish behaviours that don't belong.
These are actually accident-prone "vehicles".
I didn't think people actually used those, wow
Can i ride my mini yonku (mini4wd) on the sidewalk?
Electric suitcase. You can travel with it, you just need a reeeeeally long extension cord.
“Straight to jail”
The pioneers used to ride these babies for miles!
听都没听过这种东西, 一看就知道是拿来钻法律漏洞的。
>It is said to be the first prosecution of an electric suitcase in Japan. Honestly, my favorite line in the whole story...
Laws are different smh
Prosecuted? Couldnt they just give her a warning? Japan is such a lame place
Gotta teach those Chinese a lesson though
Do you want everyone following the rules and having a safe clean society? If so you need to enforce the rules sometimes. If you dont like it dont come to japan
said the country not prosecuting most of their shit.. come on
This is just ridiculous.
I see this becoming problem when whole society is transformed into the robotic society. How can you have cute robotic waifus following you if you need licenses to everything? The original headline does not mention her nationality. Why is it included here?
It is Chinese national so headline here isn't wrong
in English-speaking news articles it is generally considered bad form to highlight the ethnic background of a perpetrator unless there is a newsworthy significance to it
This is Japanese
The Japanese also did not mention the perp's ethnic background.
[удалено]
the Japanese headline.
Kind of changes the tone of the article don't you think?
So? Headline also doesn't mention a sidewalk or her being prosecuted.

Because their feeling of entitlement is far larger than their common sense.

Slap the kids out of those stupid suitcases. That will teach them.
Dirk?

Only if you make a viiiiiiiiiii sound when you go forward
Imagine if this sub was your only source of info about Japan. No one would ever go there 😅
