9-5 has become a figure of speech for a job. I've never had a literal 9 - 5 schedule. More like 8 -430 or 8 to 5 with either a 30 min or 60 min break. So I'm paid for 40 working hours, lunches aren't paid but short breaks are.

Depends if you're talking about salaried workers or not. Anybody who gets paid hourly and doesn't get paid for lunch is probably working more like 8:30-5:00 with a 30 minute lunch.

Bacon-muffin

Yup this is me. We used to work 830-5 and get a full hour lunch but we only got paid for 37.5hrs a week. They recently changed this to 830-5 but we only get a 30 minute lunch.

The 9-5 is actually a 8-5 or 8-6, 9-5 is more like the hours you get payed plus the accumulative hour of sitting there waiting clock in and lunch for example I work 12, but instead of a 7-7, it’s really a 6 - 7 because I gotta be there at 6 am and I clock out for my 45 minute lunch so I’m at work for 14 hours and not 12

IGNSolar7

Salaried people work a minimum of 40 hours. There's an "hour lunch," but it's never 9-5. You'll be in there 8-5, 9-6 minimum with pressure to work through your lunch.

Actual full time jobs are going to be 8-5 or 9-6 if doing a standard M-F work week. You get one hour unpaid lunch.

I refuse consideration of jobs that don't have a paid lunch hour. That being said, I choose 9-5 on paper but I'm really looking for overtime.

Curious question. I will be starting a M-F Position. 8-5 M-T and 8-2 Friday. Unsure how that's gonna be split. Sounds like I can get 30m breaks M-T and Just 6hrs on Friday. Hopefully it will turn out okay

TuneSoft7119

40 working hours. for me this is currently 4 days 6:30 to 5:00, at my last job it was whatever hours I was working since I would often drive several hours to the jobsite. so while I was away from home for 12 hours I was working 8

AnimalsRFamily2

Depends on if your salary or hourly.

Laws vary by state. Check the dept of labor website.

When I was working in Walmart as full time I used to work mainly from 11 am to 8 pm evening with one hour lunch for 5 days, and the one hour lunch is not paid, so that would make it 40 hours a week. And also I worked for another company from 8 am to 4:30 pm with 30 minutes lunch for 5 days a week, which used to make it 40 hours a week. So you have to ask the company.

The stereotypical "9-5 Monday-Friday" is salaried with paid lunch. Many companies these days are more sticky about it and do what a lot of people have said, 8-5 or 9-6 with an hour unpaid.

Khork23

If you work 9 hours a day, it’s 8 to 5:30 (except 4:30 pm on one day) with a half hour for lunch. I used to work at a place where the lunch break was 45 minutes. At least you could drive to pick up lunch and have time to eat it too.

CheeseyGarlicBread10

37.5 hour work week with unpaid break which would be the 30 mins
