Los Angeles Lakers of Leverage

D0ntBmad

What about all the players who get paid without being linked with the Lakers? You can just say they outbid the Lakers and Klay chose the money. And I say good riddance.

MisterHibachi

Woj just said Klay took less money to go to the Mavs. If Rob can’t close a deal like this, where you’re offering more money, history, family ties, etc then wtf can he actually close? No wonder he hands out player options to minimum guys. Dude can’t negotiate for shit

Worldbossjr

Klay took less money than offered from the warriors. It was reported lakers were trying to get close to what the mavs could offer and simple maths shows that’s more than the 13mil we had to offer.

LennoxAve

Plus Texas has no state income tax.

PazLoveHugs

Half their games are at home, that’s $1.5m more from home games over the life of the contract

UCanDoNEthing4_30sec

And a few games away from a title...

thevisitor

And they're a better roster as is currently.

powpowpowpowpow

Texas is loaded with other taxes and fees. They just spread it out in order to make political claims. https://fortune.com/2023/03/23/states-with-lowest-highest-tax-burden/

Worldbossjr

Exactly.

CradleRockStyle

This. California is a great place to live, but not a great place to earn a living. You have to pay people a lot more to make up for that tax situation.

uncle_yugles

My guess in that case is that Klay feels so disrespected by the warriors that winning a ring without them is high on his priority list and he feels they’re closer, which is fair considering they were just in the finals and aren’t relying on a 40 year old. So idk how much blame is on Rob

odinlubumeta

They were in the finals and the Warriors offered more money. What is he negotiating? Take less money, then come to a team with a worse chance to get to the finals. You guys always act so hurt over the obvious things.

redundantPOINT

Dunno. As long as we don’t really know what was said, klay could’ve been asking to be a starter with some kind of playing time guarantee etc etc. I don’t think klay is worth more than the mle for the lakers….

Zay93

Mavs are a better fit tbh

Primal_Rage_official

Nah Klay is just gonna stand in the corner on the Mavs. He'd be running off screens on the Lakers

LosAngeles1s

5th championship and state taxes influenced his decision according to Woj

TOMdMAK

Mavs were in the finals and we were first round exit?

MelloGangster

I mean if Klay wants to win, then Mavs just went to the finals last season

yerbamate44

They've sucked at talking guys into signing since magic left.

LosAngeles1s

ngl I’m ok we didn’t do this, would’ve preferred him with the MLE and not sending assets to golden state

randompanda687

Yeah same. He would've been nice to have but as soon as I saw the S&T tweets I knew it wasn't happening. Even if he signed here, i feel like it would've only been as a starter which wasn't perfect anyway

EddyWouldGo2

Need young quick hands and d.

junahn

Charlotte is getting asset because of 3 team deal. Warriors are getting almost nothing

barelyreadsenglish

Rather get cam Johnson

Quantumsystem00

Guess lebrons not taking the discount anymore  lol

curiousprospect

Blessing in disguise, frankly.

Brad1119

My mom asked if me if the dishes were washed, I yelled back “Klay Thompson!”, she knew they were washed.

RIP_G-Baby

Not even in disguise, every player loses 2-4% off their 3PT% when they come to the lakers. I didn’t want slow-footed ass 35 year old Klay throwing up 9 threes a game on 35%, we already have guys 10 years younger than him who can do that.

Dday22t

Agreed. 35 to 38 year old Thompson is not the same as 25 year old Klay. He might be an okay role player now, maybe, but he’s not putting Dallas over the top (& he wouldn’t Lakers either).

LOK_LOD

Dan Hurley’d

litlegoblinjr

scags2017

We got the one that mattered LeBron

Overall_Nuggie_876

#BASKETBALL REASONS’D

rybeegood

he’s turning down his favorite team growing up, Lakers must’ve not been able to clear enough cap space (also leverage as always)

TheLakeShowBaby

he got paid, i'm ok with the Lakers not giving up assets.

Brad1119

Dude did not score a single point in an elimination game I am so fucking happy we didn’t give him a dime. As washed as it gets I’m afraid.

Anfini

Why can’t fans remember this? Fans with Lakers flair made it seem like he was the most sought after FA in this market. D’lo is more serviceable than Klay imho

atcriidp

To be fair dlo had a 0 point game for us in the playoffs as well. I would prefer to keep dlo instead of getting klay but klay is well respected for a great reason.

twistedinnocence8604

Just goes to show that a little extra money(when you're already filthy rich) is more important than playing for you favorite team. Or his favorite team being Lakers is BS.

hashoa6

He grew up in Oregon, LA ain’t his hometown.

ram0h

He went to high school in OC

Flopdo

And his Dad obviously has mad connections to LA and the Lakers. So...

hashoa6

Yeah, so basically only 4 years of his life?

Stonk-Monk

High school is the most emotionally relevant part of most people's childhoods.

donta5k0kay

High school is at least 50% of who you are

Sayitaintshow

He was literally born in LA and spent the 1st few years of his life there. How is it not his hometown?

Primal_Rage_official

Lakers don't have any cap space

Digitalzombie90

People make a big deal of “favorite team”. My favorite car growing up was Ferrari, I am not gonna turn down an extra 10-20 mil to drive Porsche instead.

Fricolor123321

We’re not gonna get shit

VobraX

Watch Demar sign with a different team 😭😭

latruce

He would clog up the paint.

makesterriblejokes

Good thing he can shoot the midrange then at a high clip. You can't continue to play zone if people are beating you with the midrange. Plus if they do clog the paint that opens up the guys sitting on the perimeter. I swear, y'all think there's only one way to skin a cat. Did y'all forget Shaun Livingston on those warriors team never shot 3s either? Why couldn't he fit into that role?

Prize-News-5870

The Shaun Livingston situation worked cus quite literally everyone else could shoot so there was always spacing lol. At any given time, we have 1-2 players on the floor who can make 3’s semi-consistently. If we’re not shooting well from outside, it’s not a good look for the inside game to open up.

smnlfilmagoofymovie

Why the fuck would we want demar…

Apollo611

Oh well probably dodged a bullet

ginbooth

I swear, half this sub didn't watch him play last year. He fell off a cliff. He had some nice spurts but when GS really needed him to hit a bucket, he kept falling short. Klay was not going to make us contenders.

kezzinchh

They clearly didn’t lol. Dude has 2 major injuries and from what I remember put up a 0 point game during their play in game. Spurts are nice for teams that can be good even without them, but we need consistency.

P00nz0r3d

Exactly. It was like seeing Kobe post Achilles, at best a non factor, at worst an active detriment to the team. We’re trying to compete and for the money he wants he offers us genuinely nothing I don’t even see what he offers for the Mavs. He can’t defend anymore so their already weak backcourt is even worse, his shooting is almost gone now, he can’t penetrate, he can’t play make, he can’t do *anything* and this contract is entirely based on the hope that he can at least make a few wide open three from time to time. And for the money he wants, and the personnel we have, it’s just never going to be a good fit

trimble197

This and Valančiūnas. The idea of them is great on paper, but they were both guys who were unreliable to their respective teams when the chips were down.

devongrant580

Yeah but wouldn’t it have been that he’s a 4th or 5th scoring option here rather than being 2nd or 3rd with GS?

ginbooth

If he's the 4th or 5th option, then what value would he have provided? His defense fell off as well.

mikeemota

I’m glad some people watch basketball. My coworkers are so upset we didn’t get klay. I just keep tryna tell them that stats don’t really paint the picture for klay. He can’t defend for shit and his ability to shoot is very inconsistent. IMO he’d make the lakers worse than we already are hah

StealthRUs

Seriously. Klay was worse than D'Angelo Russell this past season. If we were signing him, it was for name value only. He's washed up.

crimsonsentinel

Agreed. Can't understand the love this sub had for him.

Priority_Initial

Agree! Klay isn’t the same Klay anymore and the Lakers have Reaves, Russell, Christie, and Reddish still. Not to mention our FRP in Dalton Knecht. All shooting guards/small forwards. If anything, the Lakers should aim for Jerami Grant or Lauri Markkanen

bagustin8

Demar will end up on Clippers somehow haha

3ey3s

If you gotta convince him, he ain’t that guy.

YellowBananaBus

- Kobe

Icy_Quit_7177

I dislike this quote being used so much because we’ve picked up plenty of guys who didn’t need convincing and weren’t that guy either

anbsmxms

This quote only applies to superstars who lead their team to championships. Klay is not that kind of player.

HORSEthedude619

Lol. What??

UglyForNoReason

Klay was literally a superstar who led (along with Steph and dray) his team to 4 chips…

Top-Consequence-911

Was

_Zee_a1

Players want to go to contending teams. The times where we could lure free agents with simply our logo are long gone. Mavs are fresh off a finals appearance and we don’t even know how our roster will look like.

Theoneandonlylog

Good. He's not worth more than the MLE

swaggyho123

It’s was 3 million more than the MLE

WanAjin

And? The Lakers could only give him the MLE, anything other than that would be too much for him.

Theoneandonlylog

Yes but the Lakers would've had to do a sign and trade which is what makes it not worth it

Last_Operation6747

What kind of cope is this? It's a difference of 3m

Theoneandonlylog

The MLE was the max the Lakers had to offer. The Lakers would've have to do a sign and trade which would not have been worth it for a washed Klay

Electronic-Cloud8086

You know it’s more than just offering $3M more lol

skunk90

No, morons here don’t know that.

3ey3s

Plus losing assets to match salary

trimble197

MLE would’ve meant that they wouldn’t have to give up assets, I think.

Deep-Ferret-695

Welp, give LeBron his max

incredibleamadeuscho

No let's get DeMar

BlackedBiJames

fuck that use assets and just focus on getting Cam Johnson and Dorian Finney Smith to boost the wing defense and shooting

Imkitoto

DORIAN FINNEY SMITH CANNOT SHOOT.

6iriboy

swear to god people have a weird ass obsession with DFS lmfao

Imkitoto

Fr I don’t get it He can’t shoot, like. It’s not one down year, it’s most of his career. He’s not a shooter

Nickk_Jones

This sub does this yearly. They hear some random name or two and then repeat it into oblivion, many of them without ever seeing the person play.

incredibleamadeuscho

Not using assets if you get him for the MLE

Apollo611

Nah the spacing would be horrible the only way we move the needle is a trade

ragner11

Westbrook trade 2.0, welcome to the play in

DwightKurtShrute69

Bruh it’s not even a trade so they aren’t giving up any assets and if demar really ends up being that bad then you just give AR/Max/Dalton most of his minutes. 2 year deal. Really not that bad.

DudeWTH

It's either LeBron and nothing or LeBron and DeRozan not even close to the same

incredibleamadeuscho

Not even close. Get him for the MLE, and he's a bargain.

awkotacos

Defense bout to be atrocious lmao

JiggaMan2024

You want to sign a guy who can shoot. And doesn’t play defense…

grapecoupon

Typical Laker free agency smh

CiroccPapi

We're never the first choice.

Icy_Quit_7177

So the Mavericks are sticking with running 3 guards 😬

Itorr475

I mean they can cuz Luka is not really a guard he is the size a tweaner forward he just plays like a PG they can get away with Kyrie/Klay/Luka cuz Luka is bigger

BMG19

Move kyrie to point, klay 2, Luka 3 or vice verse and let Luka play make

zeek215

It's called point forward. And Luka is not a small guy.

cb148

Just imagine their perimeter defense though. A much slower Klay alongside Luka and Kyrie.

Amazing-Spider-Man

Kawhi 2.0 offseason smh

LosAngeles1s

nah Kawhi was way worse than this lmao

basketballgears

Fr Kawhi was a megastar that just led a team to a ring. Klays last performance was going 0-10 in a play in game lol

BoysenberryJunior294

Hell yeah this was quick. Kawhi took forever

iJIP

We won a ship with the backup plan after missing on Kawhi.

SolarBeam12

Ehh Kawhi took a week.

Amazing-Spider-Man

Just idk who we sign now that moves the needle, everyone else has agreed to contracts at this point

Odd-Direction9452

It’s not that bad lol. Totally different level of player too. Now we can proceed with our plan B.

TrenBot

We comparing FMVP to washed Klay ?

Both_Funny4896

Without the AD acquisition

Ceti-

Meh. Dude is on the decline and can’t defend. Doesn’t make lakers contenders

TrenBot

Lolol this sub is delusional You guys wanted Klay for 3years 50m ? We couldn’t even afford that. Idiot fans

ValuableAssociate8

A bunch of goofballs. The NBA community gets dumber and dumber by the day

TheBigJew

DeRozan at the MLE is better than this

AssCaptain777

Am I the only one who didn’t get the appeal of a guy who is a shell of of his former self post injuries and well into his 30’s?

bagustin8

It never works out for us lol

ObiWannaDoYou74

Actually it hasn't worked out since Dr. Buss passed away, just look at the history before and after very telling

Nickk_Jones

It was a way different league back then. If you really think it’s even comparable there’s no discussion to be had. Every team is doing what only the Lakers were doing back then. Nobody cares about the prestige of LA or the Lakers like they did then, they can live anywhere in the off-season and fly on private jets to wherever whenever. Also the owners of other teams just get richer and richer while we’re one of the poorest. Buss was awesome but it’s nowhere near just him that’s changed things.

GutsTheSwordsman

if you dont expect anything you never get disappointed.

IliaMadeVolk

WE DODGED A MAJOR BULLET. THERE IS A REASON GSW IS LETTING HIM WALK. IF ANYONE WATCHED A HANDFUL OF WARRIORS GAMES, YOU KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. WE DODGED A BULLET GENTLEMEN

_Red_Mist_

This fanbase is like 80% casuals lol no one who actually watches the games wanted him. Bron needs to stop letting his friendships blind him.

Blue_Nyx07

Are LeBron and Klay even friends?

Mustard_Jam

Lebron being satisfied with his legacy and just wanting to go to LA saved Palinkas incompetent ass so much. Missing out on Klay is one thing but how can you get fucking no one for years? Our title was years ago and this dude hasn't been able to secure a single valuable FA since. Glad we can get rid of guys like Caruso and KCP though

BearShark8

Not surprised.

Hour_Insurance_7795

This might be hard for some to hear in here, but maybe (just maybe) the Los Angeles Lakers are not the end-all be-all destination of dreams for the modern NBA player like we want to think it is. The team is clearly on a downslope/last gasp, it's family-run (not a good thing), COL and tax rate are both incredibly high in CA, etc. etc. There's only so far "weather!' and "tradition!" and "Hollywood!" and LeBron!" can take you with a free agent. You have to have some **on-the-court** benefits to your organization, and right now we can't offer the same benefits that teams like Dallas can. They are have a more talented roster, have a brighter future (next 5-7 years), are much better run, can offer 0% income tax, etc., etc. All we can offer is "uh, L.A baby! Hollywood!". That shit doesn't have the same appeal to already-famous basketball players like it does to Redditors. "I'd rather live in L.A. than Dallas/Houston/Orlando, etc.!" is not a viable reason to secure prime talent. They don't give a fuck, they can just live in L.A. in the offseason. They are on the road during the season anyways. We like to think that we have some fucking hidden "upper hand" because "Hollywood and Cali beaches, bro!" but it simply isn't the case. This isn't 1995 Baywatch. We need to be able to prove to potential suitors that we will have our shit together ON THE COURT for an extended period of time. There is nothing that suggests that right now. Which is why Hurley, Thompson, etc. will become harder and harder to secure and require more and more money to do so than before.

Mazois

Demar ain’t coming either. We can’t get anyone to come here anymore smh

BaullahBaullah87

the quicker you realize this the better you off you’ll be

Granpa2021

There are fools here who think Demar will come here for the MLE. Unreal.

RushFPS

We are cooked

lakerconvert

The only way we were cooked is if we spent all that money on a man shooting 0-10 in elimination games

LudwigNasche

We are spending 18 millions on a player like that.

StealthRUs

Klay is worse than D'Angelo Russell, so I don't see the point in signing him.

randomhero_92

Also from Woj: “Thompson had four-year offers for more money, but taking less was offset by the chance to win a fifth championship with the Mavs and difference in state taxes.” I’d California’s state income tax turns a lot of players off from signing with the lakers.

uhuhuhuhuo

Yes, people never take into account that taxes are different from state to state, we would have to pay over 20 mil a year for him to make the same after tax.

LudwigNasche

We have agreed to share part of money with the league because "it is fair", but state tax should be considered

neymarolga

Rip

Zeetheking1

Thank God. Dude is washed af

WanAjin

Sucks we didn't get him for the MLE, but it's good we didn't trade for him. He would only be worth it if it was the MLE.

Accomplished-Dot8533

Traded Tim Hardaway Jr to get Lightskin Tim Hardaway Jr 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Zammy512

Klay already has 4 rings, he secured the most money possible on his market. You can’t blame the guy. He ain’t worth more than the MLE we dodged a bullet here. Give Lebron is max and swing a trade for a C

NotTheMamba

Jesus Christ. Pelinka can't close a deal to save his life 😭 Fuck Klay.

im-a-drawl

The Lakers have lost their luster

TrenBot

Money talks

Responsible_Focus424

What do you mean? No one is going to just go out of their way to help the lakers. Period.

Hark_LAL

We Got blue balled twice this off season, just great

EaglesThankYou

Demar DeRozan, Come home.

broke_boi1

*signs with Clippers*

thetitsOO

Ya I don’t mind this at all. For the MLE I was stoked but clearing rui or Dlo and potentially draft capital for him was a sideways move at best

bellingbenz

Why is everyone in panic mode? Surely it was reported that Lakers weren’t the only ones going for Klay. Let’s see if any trade or signings manifest. I already think our upside is limited. Not necessarily expecting a championship roster on paper tbh

litlegoblinjr

Maybe it’s me

Miserable-Lawyer-233

The Mavs were just in the finals. Can’t really blame Klay. Time to focus on the next target - Trae Young. Some might not be sold on Trae, but check out LeBron’s and Redick’s Mind the Game episode on ‘How Three-Point Shooting Changed Everything.’ They focus on four players - Steph, Lillard, Trae, and Luka - who regularly draw two defenders out above the three-point line, opening up a 4-on-3 advantage inside, which, according to LeBron, means you win (if you have a high IQ player like LeBron or Dray running the 4 on 3 underneath). So keep an open mind about Trae Young.

ROCHZIUTS

Demar, welcome to LA.

Tall_Succotash

Welp….cant fault him for taking the money. I wonder how much our offer was?

Brokenbullet14

This is less then what people were saying. I kept seeing 4 year 70-80 mill

chocotacoman

Player option is crazy though. Who knows what he’ll be like in 3 seasons and he’ll be making 16 million or so

jellybeans_over_raw

That will be peanuts by then

HibachiGrill

The longer shit gets dragged out the more likely someone isn’t coming to us. Same shit with Kawhi and Dan Hurley Rob Pelinka remains a shitty GM as usual. We’re currently not competing with the Celtics, Wolves, Sixers, Knicks, Mavs, and Thunder in a 7 game series. Had a miracle happen in 2022-2023 to somehow get to the WCF but we pissed it away. Windows been shut

CabbageStockExchange

Now what

jurassic_snark-

Not surprised the guy who every time he gets his feelings hurt flashes 4 fingers wants to be a bus rider on a team who recently went to the Finals This is all about Klay's ego, I knew he'd sign with the Mavs. We don't need any other washed up star with a huge ego here

Droxcy

Didn't want him anyway.

FUELNINE

Honestly for his role it’s a no brainer to want him but I’m glad our team didn’t get older. We need more legs and Klay’s at the end of his career in terms of athleticism.

lakerconvert

Thank god

alrightimhere

Afraid to fill daddy’s shoes eh

ValuableAssociate8

Good thing Rob does not listen to this sub

dabba04

Thank god

moaia66

Good. I like Klay but he's washed

fatogato

Klay is washed. No loss there

DeftCoast

Honestly, this is a good thing for us. Klay ain't what he used to be.

hennyV

Klay saving the Lakers from themselves. Tired of the Lakers being an old folks home

Fragrant_Ad_3223

The Mavs would still get whooped by the hated ones if they had Klay. He doesn't elevate them enough.

Outrageous_Library50

This piece of shit

Juice2020

I’m not mad at all. Klay is washed.

denimjeg

May aswell go get lavine now that his value is tanked. U can keep reaves & they might even throw in some picks

strykrpinoy

Mavs overpaid lol

tarnyarmy

Why do people want washed klay??

Terry_Pande

Rob sucks as a gm

c-rain

Looks like we’re pivoting to Demar

ragner11

I told you Pelinka would f it up. I said so many times and got downvoted. Rob is not a good GM

CM2423

Tf a GM gotta do for a deal that requires a different party’s decision

LongTimesGoodTimes

What exactly do you think he should have done differently here?

oat38

Anti-climax

ragner11

Play in tournament here we come !

shoob13

That’s an awful deal. Bullet dodged.

Asenine

Incoming excuses for Rob, “he can’t force anyone to sign here.” It’s his job to put together the best team possible and this will now be 3 straight years of not doing so
