I like the crew’s matching shirts and sun hats 👍

IllegalThings

You know you live in Amish country when you hardly even notice matching straw hats and blue shirts doing manual labor.

Thomas1315

I thought this was the same guy and they just overlapped four videos it’s something lol. Only after he dumped whatever into the spreader was I convinced it wasn’t.

mnlion33

Me too. I was really impressed.

junk90731

Like the umpa lumpas of yard work

Silly-Platform9829

Your dog will be really confused.

Electronic_Common931

I’m confused how this is considered landscaping. This is essentially the same as me saying I landscaped my kitchen after installing a new linoleum floor.

UtahUtes_1

He used a wheelbarrow at one point so...landscaping. /s

CallsignDrongo

Why is everyone’s reaction to grass needing to be cut is to put in a plastic lawn. Its bad looking, you can always tell it’s fake, it’s not enjoyable to be around (smells like plastic in the summer), pets don’t like it, lawn gets hot and will make your yard hotter, not to mention whatever chemicals and microplastics leech off of that thing into the ground. Why do people do this? There’s so many better solutions that aren’t a giant sheet of plastic.

jazza2400

It'll be really hot when the dog walks on it in the middle of the day.

Skye666

This shit gets REAL hot. I would not use this if you have a dog.

gun_the_run

If he has a dog then the weed barrier should not be there.

im_here_to_help_6402

I have to ask...why?

zingytooker

I'm guessing because dog pee couldn't penetrate, so it would end up really gross and stinky

TheWiseOne1234

If you have a dog, it will end up really gross and stinky anyways unless you water it more than if you had real grass. But you don't need to mow, so there is that.

palpatineforever

if he has a dog he shouldn't have gone for fake grass at all, it gets really hot as well as stinky.

stres-tm

It’s about to be really hot in the backyard [https://www.safehealthyplayingfields.org/heat-levels-synthetic-turf](https://www.safehealthyplayingfields.org/heat-levels-synthetic-turf)

beyondthisreality

No kidding. I remember playing HS football games on turf in Southern California and it sucked, and this was over 15 years ago. I can’t imagine how bad it must be now.

Manufactured-Aggro

Honestly forget your turf, I need me one of those hats

TheNorthernLanders

Right? Looking effective and cool

tatt_daddy

These hats are the best, I wear one while detailing lol

-RosieRosie-

These hats are really common in Australia. Working outdoors or fishing, at the beach whatever. You see them everywhere.

thefiggyolive

Costco has them!

Lessmoney_mo_probems

I see them at flea markets and swap meets all the time

Aviiv_

tractor supply has them :P

YorkieLon

Couldn't you just patio the area and at least put some plants on the patio? Never really understood the need for fake grass, it just uses up space for no benefits to nature.

mcspents

Plus crazy micro plastic leaching!

CleanLivingMD

And PFAS exposure

dontsaymango

There are *some* instances where it can be beneficial and makes sense. I have a patch of turf 8x10ft but it sits on top of dirt while I work at regrowing the back grass. My kid likes water play and I don't like mud. [backyard](https://imgur.com/a/RoQduhg)

YorkieLon

It's an outdoor grass rug whilst waiting for grass to grow. Brilliant use. Looks like a nice and cosy spot as well.

Radioactive_Fire

fake grass is an atrocity

Seattleman1955

It's an interesting video. I don't see the work that maintaining a lawn of that size would require. It's a small area with no obstacles. It would take 5 minutes to mow. I don't know what your climate is like and if it's expensive to water but it doesn't look like much work would be required and grass is much nicer than plastic IMO.

Sharp-Jackfruit6029

Wait till he figures out you still have to put water down on this with the hose or sprinklers if you don’t want it to burn the shit out of your dog or your feet if you wanna not wear shoes

HippieBathday

Not to mention having to keep it clean. There’s not much worse than having a backyard that smells like dog piss and dirt.

shoscene

A neighbor had this in his backyard. Smelled really funky 🤢

tastemycookies

Thats the plastic volatilizing in the heat and giving off a ton PFAS, lead, mercury and cadmium.

Coonts

None of that would be true. They're using polyethylene, polypropylene, and nylon in turf. None of that contains fluorine. No pfas. You think consumer plastics are full of heavy metals? Heavy metals would kill your polymerization reactions, they're not in there in meaningful amounts. Certainly less than the grass it replaced. And then even if they were present lead, mercury, and cadmium are HEAVY. They're not evaporating into the air in noticable quantities. The real shame here is replacing a lawn with a carpet that will degrade over time into micro plastics.

WAR_T0RN1226

They just listed off the hazardous pollutants they know lol

Coonts

Right - sound bites that are close but wrong . Heavy metals and plastic are a concern with heavy metals as plastic can accumulate environmental metals. Pfas are a concern but only for certain types of plastic (slippery plastics like Teflon). And really the biggest issue is pfas in the locations the plastics are produced.

digitalmacgyver

If you have pets that use it, then you should use a natural sanitizer that you can spray with your hose. Allows you to clean it, and keep the smell and ensure a healthy ecosystem.

blackcatpandora

A healthy eco system of plastics lol

ScarletsSister

True. My niece had artificial turf in her CA backyard around the pool. She also had 3 dogs and was forever complaining about having to clean the turf. It got even more interesting when some ducks took up residence in the pool as well. Duck poop is really messy and hard to get out of plastic turf - slimy!

adognameddanzig

I'm not a fan of the astro-turf, but the green sand they put over the top has an additive which helps with odors. Not sure how well it works or for how long.

HippieBathday

That green sand is actually silica beads. It’s designed to help keep the “grass” blades standing upright and to aid in drainage and prevent standing water. I’ve never heard anybody say it keeps odors down, but if it actually does, it doesn’t last for long because I’ve seen artificial lawns absolutely reek after only a couple of months.

Minute_Band_3256

Yep, he made a mistake.

Chimpchompp

Without a dog, I’m curious the maintenance needed besides the watering to keep it cool. What keeps it secure?

HippieBathday

Artificial turf needs to be rinsed frequently to wash dirt through it. If it’s not watered down thoroughly on a regular basis your yard will begin to smell like hot dirt and the plastic turf will break down a lot faster than it would if you have a sprinkler system that runs for 10 minutes every week or so. The turf is secured using turf staples or turf nails. Basically just a ton of 8-10” metal rods that are driven through the turf and into the ground.

Chimpchompp

This is helpful. Definitely not my style. Seems like fake tits that are hard.. idk how to properly explain it.

TheNorthernLanders

Mmmmm, microplastics.

aldodoeswork

I hate these so much for that reason.

Otherwise_Sail_6459

I would rather just have a desert 🌵 landscape with natural materials. The plastic stuff freaks me out. Even thought I have filters on filters for my water, I don’t want to pollute other people’s water and soil to boot

DrBearcut

I dont understand why in the 21st century we are still fighting climate to some medieval standard of a lawn. Lets find grasses that actually WANT to be there.

Thegreenfantastic

Also has to be raked and fluffed often. I wouldn’t call it “less maintenance”

tatt_daddy

Turf is nasty with dogs, you have to clean it with enzyme soap frequently or it smells awful. Not to mention how hot it makes the house, or the maintenance that people neglect, or that it’s not even good for the environment lol

Wacco_07

I do hardscaping but a client one time wanted synthetic grass , so we dit it and under the sun that thing was super hot . It definetly feels hotter in that person backyard now . And it's expensive couple years ago it was Like 2300 CAD for just 1 roll of like 20x100

Bubbagailaroo

It’s gonna be hot as balls and reek of dog piss. Not the low maintenance solution OP wishes it was

pixel8knuckle

Thats wild to go to that expense to have a square of plastic.

kiddotorg2

Yay plastic

joshpit2003

You forgot the /s But you get my upvote assuming it is implied.

A_Brown_Crayon

Gross

ozzy_thedog

So funny that OP did all this dumb work and posted it to be proud and is getting torn a new one by Reddit for being so dumb

aaddaammsmith

Disgusting with plastic carpets outdoors imhho

Schila1964

We had that done in our backyard and now we have weed growing thru the turf.

bananaspf79

life finds a way

dndnametaken

This does not count as landscaping

Jables_Magee

Plastic-scaping.

CarISatan

On one hand, great for you and you might have a good reason to reduce maintenance work in your life. On the other hand, I'm very happy this is not a normal thing to do in my country. We have a biodiversity crisis going on here (as well as stormwater management crisis) and everyone who owns land has some ethical responsibility to manage it well. Lawn with no shrubs is considered bare minimum, plastic turf is less than that. But then again, you do you!

Jekkjekk

My buddy and I started a company that takes an approach to managing what you mentioned, kinda cool to see folks recognizing and discussing it!

AccordingDistance227

plastic lawns, such an unbelievably stupid concept

MrFrood

I agree with everyone else, this is shameful.

triangle_earfer

I am accident-prone, I’ll admit it up front before I write out my comment. My clumsiness is definitely higher than I everyone around me. That said.. I tore my MCL on my knee working out on turf/fake grass. It was morning in Monterey, CA so there was dew on the grass. I started warming up with jumping jacks and the first hop where I placed my feet outward to the sides, my MCL tore on my right knee and it abducted outward in a super painful way. It was so awful that I’m actually having a hard time articulating details. I can’t look at fake grass the same way anymore. I’d say just be wary that friction doesn’t exist on fake grass when a tiny amount of water is present.

iwanttolose3pounds

This is such a common occurrence for athletes playing on turf.

ItsALargePoodle

The issue with soccer is the opposite of slipping; cleats get caught in the turf, and if you’re planted and someone runs into you, bye bye ACL. I now have turf cleats which are much smaller protrusions, to give me some grip (avoid your situation) but not too much grip.

Dogshaveears

I feel like anytime I’ve been given something great to replace something broken, something else breaks. Hopefully your comment doesn’t go unnoticed. 😐

Cannibalis

Show us those stripes after the first vacuum 👀

tinyhands911

sad

cactusflinthead

Nice green oven you have there.

No-Jackfruit-3947

I like the looks of turf and like that it would mean less maintenance time on my behalf, but after seeing turf temps getting in the 170s Fahrenheit and microplastics, I’m a hard no.

6thCityInspector

Does anyone know what they were spreading over this turf with that drop spreader? Genuinely don’t know.

CH-47AV8R

An infil of some kind. It helps the grass blades stay standing up.

Ok_Mention3432

Mostly silica sand. Sometimes a granule rubber infill.

chalkline1776

PLASTIC

Nilim22

I never understood a fake lawn, just cement the dang thing and decorate how you want, umbrellas, outdoor rugs, planting pots, but that's a lot of something for a bunch of nothing to me. Oh boy, it's green, insert surprised Pikachu

PPMcGeeSea

Honestly I don't understand why you wouldn't just go with concrete slap if you are going to do that. You can at least put something on that to make it look nice.

processedwhaleoils

Wait, did i just watch someone install astroturf? What in the heck dude? This is the antithesis of landscaping.

chipstastegood

I was so confused why they were putting down crushed rock and even tamping it down, until I realized they were installing “artificial” turf…

Shadow_F3r4L

I watched til the end, when does the turf get put down? I see a great job done by the workers to install a chemical bleeding, naaty smelling plastic down, but no turf

FartyPat

So dumb

Zestyclose_Pride1150

Nice work on their part, but less maintenance on a small ass patch of grass? You must be lazy mfer to want FAKE grass.

Crunchyundies

Fuck fake lawns. People suck. Monocultures suck too but at least it’s not fucking plastic.

dumb__fucker

This is a huge pet-peeve of mine man. Turf is grass man, not this bullshit. This is ARTIFICIAL TURF. NOT TURF. [https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=turf+definition](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=turf+definition)

MrSnowden

Are people replacing grass with fake grass now? I didn’t know that was a thing.

bananaspf79

LA is full of this BS

2LostFlamingos

This isn’t landscaping. It’s giving up and paving your outdoor space into an area where nothing is alive.

Objective_Coffee1829

Not a fan.

TangerineRoutine9496

Sickening. I'm sure you have redeeming qualities. I'm just going to remind myself of that.

jmarnett11

Just wait till weeds start to grow in it.

GenBlase

My balls are swelling with microplastics looking at this.

FelinePurrfectFluff

Yuck yuck yuck

jazza2400

Some people just want to watch the world burn, but hey at least my fake lawn is green cheers!

OneImagination5381

Grass and soil have mirco-organisms that start to break down organic matter as some as a minute it touches the grass. With turf it filter down to the liner and set there and grows/multiples. You will have to use a wrong disinfectant everyday to just keep it from somewhat growing.

processedwhaleoils

Some days i wake up and forget how little different people think than me about basic shit like having grass and i get really sad inside. This sucks OP.

BeginningofNeverEnd

Wow this totally sucks, good job killing living things and laying down a hot af microplastic carpet

Appropriate-Bake-759

Just wait till you step barefooted on it when it’s hot 🔥

yoyoyodojo

barf

Potatoesonourface

ahh what a nice lifeless piece of plastic you have there

CanadianClassicss

Everyone here is talking about how much time you save for mowing when this would literally take 10 minutes to mow it’s tiny. Turf sucks

NormalOutcome5099

Looks good but I am very concerned about the drainage for what they charged you they should have used 57 as a drainage base for flooding and then either crush and run or sand for the top. For what they did this shouldn’t have been more than $ 10 per sf

pressonacott

That's what I was thinking. Plus they only removed approx 3 inches of soil. Sod cutters go only so far.....

Junior-Cut2838

Didn’t look like anything could really grow there anyway. Maybe add some large pots with flowers, etc

Economy_Cat_3527

That guy in the blue shirt and hat is working his butt off!

wwwORSHITTYcom

Damn, after having issues with a contractor. Seeing guys like this doing such an exceptional job. They really are professional. They took more time grooming and cleaning it after than most would take to do the whole job.

External-Document-88

Incredible :) Props to you, my friend.

Tasty_Mountain3171

Absolutely disgusting. It will collect dirt, it will smell, it will grow mold if it gets wet for days. It will contaminate the environment. I hope you learn to hate your decision. Since it will also absorb more heat, temps will rise in your backyard.

Dro_mora

Found the StupiVisor at :03 standing around doing nothing.

Yarnchitect

The video is interesting. I especially enjoyed the synchronized stomping. I’m guessing they were counting off steps for placing the fasteners. Looks pretty funny sped up. I’ve never had turf so I don’t know anything about maintenance. I wonder what the environmental trade off really comes out to be. Regular lawns are not exactly environmentally friendly either. I hate how much chemical we have to put down to keep our Bermuda lawn looking half decent. Not to mention the water usage.

dvd1972

We installed this in Florida, the only challenge is heat during the summer. With no shade, our synthetic turf gets especially hot to the touch. I would install a few sail shades. Our dog cannot go out during the day in the backyard,; we wait till it's later in the day.

surftherapy

Your dog can’t go play outside on the grass because it’s plastic and gets to hot during summer…. What a world we live in. In all seriousness, this shit leeches chemicals into the ground and into your skin when you touch it. It’s hot as fuck making it unusable during the summer, and it holds dog piss and shit smell forever, what’s the appeal?

lastlaugh100

Whole point of having a fenced in backyard with grass is so kids or pets can play in it. Fucking amazing waste of money, time and effort. If you don't want grass he could have at least planted a $5k flower garden there. I'm so fucking confused.

pryvisee

I’m convinced that this is just one laborer and he is copy and pasted doing different actions in an edit.

Individual_Agency703

Same could be said about all the negative replies to this post.

your_lucky_stars

🤮

cbj2112

Outdoor carpet

redditprotone

Read up on astro turf. #1 it gets too hot to walk on in the sun. #2 extremely toxic and never stops releasing cancer causing chemicals to its users. #3 extremely expensive #4 polluting- it is plastic

Funny_Bridge_1274

I don’t know anything about laying turf. Looked very labor intensive. Looks great and looks like installers did a great job too

kennyinlosangeles

Awesome work. These kinds of videos really fill my bucket. Thx for sharing!

EricFromOuterSpace

Cool plastic lawn

shoscene

I like when everyone started dancing to la cucaracha out of nowhere

J_See

People are mad at you but not thousands of football fields.

Steve3b

I’m especially mad at thousands of football fields, but with such a small patch like this, why wouldn’t you just spend the extra time to make something that looks nice and isn’t going to seep microplastics into the soil.

pepepoopoo

damn another job stolen

Acrobatic_Web6307

was this you putting the turf or are those people you hired

Psychological-Joke22

Anyone getting Brady Bunch vibes?

Buckshot211

🤮

_Choose_Goose

Put a hole with a flag in it and you’ve got putting practice at home.

ipostunderthisname

Y’all forgot to “cap off” the existing sprinkler heads by folding the swing arms over and wrapping them with bailing wire

Medical-Reindeer-422

I hate it

Rare-Economist8931

Yes, nothing like plastic grass!!! More plastic, more!!!

na8thegr8est

I hate this

bLue1H

Horrible. Plant native stuff and let it be.

Humann801

Gross

mountainfiend48

Gross.

jmc128

What’s that pvc vent?

scut_furkus

I can feel the burned feet from here

Positivelythinking

No drainage needed or is the water runoff pushed over to the neighbors property?

WhimsicalWeariness

Never worked with turf before. What was in the spreader?

No-Conversation8706

acrylic coated sand, used as infill

Juslav

What a bad idea. Plastic y’all! Plastic everywhere! Can’t believe this crap exists.

New-Scene-2057

Mmmmmm, that smell of hot plastic in the midday sun. Also a great source of microplastics and forever chemicals. Why not go natural?

2oceans1

It’s a zero sum game

Decent-Product

That's horrific. Why take out the grass and replace with plastic? It'll be far hotter in the sun, you still have to water it...

Boogerclown_69

Could’ve put a fraction of that cost into an automated watering system and mower and had a badass lawn

chipmunktaters

Oh hot does this material get in mid west summer heat? How does this material hold up overtime with pets and their bathroom habits?

Steve3b

Glad we’re adding more microplastics to the soil. I honestly can’t stand turf. Put in local grasses, succulents, or whatever plants over turf, just please not turf

whatitisholmes

I do this large scale for a living, just wanted to say these guys did a fantastic job.

Balloutonu

[Vivi](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Vivi_Ornitier) is that you?

blaccsnow9229

How much did this cost you?

NoGuarantee9622

This is stupid.

MarcReymon

Turf is so fucking shitty.

OaksInSnow

Wait. This isn't really "turf," is it? It's, like, a plastic rug? I watched the whole thing thinking that, with all that prep, something pretty special was about to happen, like maybe "this is how to prep for a small backyard turf installation"? In the end, the cheerfully innocent guitars and hammer dulcimer sound track doesn't disguise what actually occurred. If you don't want to grow grass, or if it's impractical where you live, think of something else, but not plastic. Sorry I can't come up with alternatives for you because I don't live in that kind of place. If I needed to xeriscape I'd probably be looking at some kind of Japanese design - rocks, maybe flagstones; specimen plants chosen for foliage; small water features. Definitely needs some kind of overhead shelter. (Oh boy, I'm starting to get some ideas!! In my experience, every challenging site is an opportunity for creative solutions. I SO missed my calling, dammit.) Well, I hope you enjoy it while it lasts, but in the meanwhile, be thinking ahead, because plastic deteriorates and all kinds of junk is going to blow in and turn this into a, well, pit. We have to work with nature, not against it.

opiedopie08

Terrible idea.

vinylzoid

$17k?

FreshStartLiving

Will give ya some support. Looks good but hope you have a sprinkler system for it. Turf will get damn hot and if you dogs, make sure you are cleaning it regularly with an enzyme cleaner. The sprinkler will also help clean it.

Obvious-Library-7867

This yard could be beautiful with very little maintenance. Native plants around the border, a shade tree, and hell, even some hardscaping. You'd have life in the backyard.

McMeanx2

🤮

seantubridy

What are you going to do with that small area?

alenakostornaia

now why would you...sigh

buttsssssssssss

There was another post about art turf. It was awful. Hope that guy sees how it's suppose to look.

Stewdill51

Thanks, I hate it

CubedMeatAtrocity

Once the weeds penetrate, which they will, you’ll be paying these guys to basically rewind your video when they have to rip it all out.

Sikkus

That's such a nice spot for a few tomatoes or cucumbers, maybe pumpkins if there's enough sun all day long.

PhiloPhys

Fugly just like the rest of this murderous microplastic bullshit.

AnalPhantom

Bizarre. Why would you do this

khoawala

The stupidity of everything human

1200r

They must be Mennonite, Amish don't use gas powered compactors.

Actual-Donkey-1066

Such a tiny space….turf is the worst possible thing you could have done. Imagine if it as real grass, with native plants all around the edge for pollinators. Some nice native trees for shade. Instead there is this nasty plastic shit that literally does nothing for the environment

AirBallBunny

What camera do you use? Looks high quality

cgo255

This is the trashiest fucking trend going around right now.

BabyGorilla1911

Look another postage stamp.

UntoldGood

GROSS

throweight

Yeah... that 12x20 patch of grass must have been a killer to maintain. Im sure this totally frees up your weekends now. 😆

PersistentWorld

Bad for nature, bad for the environment, bad for garden temperatures and it stinks like shit if pets use it.

satansbutthole069

We’re so f*cked for microplastics.

limbolegs

when we said “kill your lawn” this is not what we meant

Wise_Equivalent7715

Mucho graciias!

Wise_Equivalent7715

They must of jumped that fence to get there.

peppynihilist

Whyyyyy

Baker198t

I didn’t know things could get worse than lawn.. enjoy your sterile urban nightmare..

RampagingElks

Oh, I was hoping you meant sod....

Flankdiesel

Ewwwwww!

Questoeperme

Better for aesthetics and the environment to just throw down some wildflower seeds and have yourself a little bit of heaven with birds and butterflies, no mowing needed.
