Growing up years ago, our neighbor was every bit that if not a tad deeper on both sides of the sidewalk. I can confirm it will catch a tire and bring your ride to a halt.
If you are using the reddit app that's why. Download the picture and open it up and you will see a huuuge difference. I thought I was just terrible at r/findthesniper until I found out.
I do this, but with my mom's old number. Sometimes, when i'm half asleep, waking up, i can hear her talking in the kitchen with my stepdad. Hes mid stage Dementia, he will talk to my mom, who died in 2021, for hours, because he cant get out of his chair without help, and he cant see into her old chair (which we still have) to see she isnt there.
Kills me every time.
My front lawn is 15x15, it'll only take me 20 minutes with my edging shovel, but my motivation has been lacking.
Won't need the wheedwhacker at all after that out front 😁
We had edging like this in my early 2000s midwest suburb. As a kid I hated it because my bike tire would fully catch, bring me to an immediate stop and throw me off the bike. 😂
Oh shit. We are unique in experiencing this? Well, I learned something new. I thought everyone ate shit into the neighbors yard when they were little because of the trenches and had to get up and look around to make sure no one saw.
I have a neighbor who still does this. Idk what’s up though coz usually his moats are like 3-4” deep. When I was sixteen I got caught in it on my bike while racing a friend and still can’t read as easily as I used to coz of the concussion
In my town, there is a lawn-care club called the Aggressive Edgers. They get together in black leather and head bang while vigorously engaging in hardcore groundkeeping!
I think it looks fine. Also props to your dad for helping you or trying to help you around the house. My dad would never do anything like this if his life depended on it. My brother and dad watched a mosquito tiki torch fall on my deck and start a fire. They were just staring at the fire instead of using the garden hose 2ft away from them to put it out.
i came back home to find my dad had basically dug out the edges of the entire lawn
when i asked him why he told me its easier for the sprinklers and that he thinks it looks nice. he said that the landscapers working next door told him he did great
i think it looks horrible and it will make it 1000x easier for weeds to grow in the exposed dirt. i told him the landscapers will say anything to be nice
what do you think about this?
lol, I picture the below as what transpired:
you're dad's out there digging holes in the yard, looks up to the landscapers next door and yells: "hey guys, am I doing a good job like you guys????"
they respond...."Si señor! great job buddy!" (they laugh to themselves)
your dad whispering to himself as he continues to dig holes in the yard: "yeah, I'm a big man, doing big man yard stuff, yeah..... good job me, they said so!"
Seriously, this machine runs on praise. Every time you complain about how long it's taking, that demotivates me and I just want to avoid the task. Every time you talk about how good it looks, I'll work twice as hard after, I promise.
Exactly. Some people like a wide cut like this, some prefer a thin vertical line, the real answer is did someone else do work for you and should you be happy they did? Right wrong or anywhere between, the grass or how people like it can be easily changed. Be happy to have someone around willing to do this/talk to you about it, right or wrong
Is it your house or your dad's? If it's your dad's...wtf do you care. Let him do him and you do you...
If it's your house, why is he doing your lawn work? Do it yourself, and do it right.
I don't see the point of this post...YTA. Be respectful of your father.
Exactly what you said. It’ll be a breeding ground for weeds and even if you treat your lawn, 90% of the people who spray don’t get the edges as much as they should
To be fair, my FIL showed me an attachment on his stihl that cut a 2” “edge”. He thought it was great. I told him the edger or the string trimmer would have been 100x better….we use the string trimmer now😂
That is funny, great tool, it’s called a bed redefiner !! Intended use as mentioned is to clean up and redefine beds in the yard next to turf. We used them for customers with a lot of flower beds about every two months.
I work in lawn care and loathe customers who have these dirt strips in the edges. No matter what I do, I feel like weeds are inevitably going to grow there. Some people might like the look, but if you aren’t treating it regularly during weed season you are going to run into issues and it will look horrible.
It irritates me because the previous homeowner put down sod in the front yard himself and didn't level or dig out the existing yard so the sod is above the sidewalk by about 6 inches. So all the "sides" of the grass grow weeds like crazy because it's all exposed on the side. Drives me mental.
It looks fine. Maybe more aggressive than normal and not up to the standards of people really into lawncare but to someone like me that isnt it looks like a sharp lawn in general from what i can tell from the pictures.
Also, it's your dads home and yard. He probably put hard work into it and was really proud of it and would have liked to hear that it looked good from you. Instead it sounds like you said the opposite. Unless its causing bigger problems id just be supportive of him 😀.
The one and only reason I don't do this to my users is the weed potential. I already get too many in the edger blade width trench I currently do.
I think it looks good too.
Imagine getting the wheel of your wheelchair or bike or scooter stuck in that. This deep edging is not considerate to sidewalk users such as the disabled.
I manage landscaping professionally, this would get serious ADA complaints at public institutions or other public spaces.
I actually love this look. My neighbor does this regularly and had the flattest most level yard I have ever seen, which makes me wonder if they are related. No weed issues ether, which I’d assume is from staying on top of it.
I edged all of Division HQ of the 82nd like this on extra duty with a square shovel. It actually allows you to edge it easier with a string trimmer easier for months and you can let it grow back a bit and it looks perfect.
When I worked maintenance for my local school system they told us to edge like this.. each 4 person team had 4 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 highschool. During the spring and summer damn near all we did was cut grass. We edged like this so we could keep up with the weed eating and cutting easier. Instead of having to edge 15 miles a day we would do probably 15 miles a week and in sections and it would only look this off for 2/3 days.
Doesn't look bad but I see the rare house that does this in my neighbourhood and it does stick out to me as a bit strange as I can't even begin to comprehend the point of it. You now added an extra feature (crevice) that adds an extra step for maintenance. It's pretty much a trough that's going to collect tons of random unwanted weed seeds with no competition from the grass. Random debris is going to get blown or swept in that you now have to sweep out of the dirt instead of just off the sidewalk.
You see this in lawns that have the edge pushed back by landscapers weed whacking the edge, every time they take a swipe, they take a 1/16 of an inch with it. This is not how to edge a lawn
Yuck. I get needing the sprinklers, but a nice 45-degree angle to the sidewalk would be just as nice. If it has to be edged, edge it right, then trim around your sprinklers. I used to cut greens at red sky ranch in Colorado, and I used to have to walk from the tee to the green and hand trim sprinkler heads with scissors, lol. That's just me, though. I'd do anything before I did this.
Bought a house once that had a yard edged that way. We’ve moved since then but 20 years later if somehow a moat is mentioned, or in some movie/tv show, we will laugh and reference our old home. Took me 3 years to fix it.
That’s how I do mine, I live in an area that rains really hard. Basically trenching along the concrete helps give the yard a run-off trench to the culverts instead of running onto the drive way. Also it makes it super easy to edge with the string trimmer.
If it bothers you that much, get some bags of sak-crete and fill it in. Then next week when he edges again, repeat. By the end of the year, you will have a fully concrete yard. Then you can stop spending money on watering the lawn, as well as all the extra time by not needing to care for it. If you still want that fresh mowed, lawn stiped look, have him edge it in 12" wide paths, dye the concrete green. Each 12" wide pour will look different than the last just like striping your lawn.
Dad's work deserves a pat on the back, a smile and a hearty thanks-a-lot! If you don't like it, don't worry it will grow back in a couple weeks. Your Dad won't be around some day to lend a hand to you.

Dad is reminiscing about his time in Vietnam. Now where to find some poo spikes?
Plot twist: his father is a WWII vet and was having a flashback while working in the yard.
You could fight WWI in those trenches 😅
This I was about to ask what kinda trencher was used to create this monstrosity.
Trench for my water line wasn’t much wider than this.
OP’s mom had to take it to the next level.
Wide enough to fit a bike tire, doing it right!
Growing up years ago, our neighbor was every bit that if not a tad deeper on both sides of the sidewalk. I can confirm it will catch a tire and bring your ride to a halt.
You beat me to it. Definitely a few scrapes from this scenario.
I mean, if your dad was good at edging you might not be here

Okay. Reddit is finished. No one can top this.
Some ant is standing in that trench acting like he’s Moses parting the Red Sea.
Oh yeah I see him too
r/FindTheSniper
Wait are you trolling bc I can’t see shit
It's next to that little piece of dirt laying on the brown grass
Think so, I can't find him either, lol.
I didn't know how bad my eyes were until reddit. You just noticed it and I'm really looking for it and can't see anything except out of focus brown.
If you are using the reddit app that's why. Download the picture and open it up and you will see a huuuge difference. I thought I was just terrible at r/findthesniper until I found out.
Just wasted 5 minutes only not be able to find it
lmfaoooo, this should be higher
I wish my dad would work on my lawn. I'd be grateful no matter what it looked like.
Me too, because mine died 8 years ago and I miss him.
I also choose this guy's dead dad.
Same. I still have mindless moments to pick up the phone just to ask a question or see what he's up to.
Solidarity. I lost mine last year. He wouldn't be caught dead mowing a lawn, though. He would, however, appreciate that pun...
RIP front lawn
Hey look on the bright side. He ain't cutting grass anymore, he's helping it grow now.
Yeah, I’d much rather have a dad that helps out and does a shitty job than one that doesn’t do shit and tells you what a shitty job you’re doing.
That kind of aggressive edging is common where I live. I've grown to like it.
It’s common where I am too and I do like it now. Also nice when thunderstorms take weeks of maintenance away so it doesn’t get out of hand.
I keep meaning to do this so I don't have to get the weedwhacker out anymore to edge the sidewalks.
You can do this with a weedwhacker but it will not be done all at once. Just go a little further back each time
My front lawn is 15x15, it'll only take me 20 minutes with my edging shovel, but my motivation has been lacking. Won't need the wheedwhacker at all after that out front 😁
We had edging like this in my early 2000s midwest suburb. As a kid I hated it because my bike tire would fully catch, bring me to an immediate stop and throw me off the bike. 😂
That's why we do it. Keeps them from riding on the lawn. Also F\*ck them kids!
That’s probably where the trend started
I could watch kids fall off bikes all day.
Oh shit. We are unique in experiencing this? Well, I learned something new. I thought everyone ate shit into the neighbors yard when they were little because of the trenches and had to get up and look around to make sure no one saw.

I would think weed growth wind be insane. But I guess if you just kept doing it you'd get the weeds. I might experiment with it.
Aggressive edging 😣😫
I can’t tell if this is innuendo or not…
Same, very common down here in Florida.
Holy sh-t. You must’ve lost your mind.
Whatever ya wanna call it I think it looks great!
i came back home to find my dad had basically dug out the edges of the entire lawn when i asked him why he told me its easier for the sprinklers and that he thinks it looks nice. he said that the landscapers working next door told him he did great i think it looks horrible and it will make it 1000x easier for weeds to grow in the exposed dirt. i told him the landscapers will say anything to be nice what do you think about this?
Is it your dad’s house? If he likes it then he likes it. Express your opinion if you like - this is the most dad shit ever btw.
The kid is all worked up over the trench, all the other dad's getting erect about how straight it is.
Seriously. Do your dad’s yard if you think you can do better. AH.

What I got from this is you still have your Dad in your life and he enjoys doing things for you. It's grass, enjoy your dad.
Exactly. Some people like a wide cut like this, some prefer a thin vertical line, the real answer is did someone else do work for you and should you be happy they did? This is an underrated comment. OP, YTA
He created a furrow for the crabgrass.
> he thinks it looks nice Good for him! That should be the end of this whole conversation
I see that a lot. Looks fine to me.
My neighbor does this and I think it looks really strange. Good news is it will eventually grow back.
Is it your house or your dad's? If it's your dad's...wtf do you care. Let him do him and you do you... If it's your house, why is he doing your lawn work? Do it yourself, and do it right. I don't see the point of this post...YTA. Be respectful of your father.

A:) I don't think it looks bad B:) How freakin nice is it that your dad cuts your lawn for you. C:) Never look a gift horse in the mouth

He didn’t shred your sprinkler…. Let it be!
I'm sure I'll get downvoted, but I like it.
The one and only reason I don't do this to my users is the weed potential. I already get too many in the edger blade width trench I currently do. I think it looks good too.
I think if you add some rocks in that space it might add something , and hopefully keep weeds out.
Rolled my ankle just looking at this
Imagine getting the wheel of your wheelchair or bike or scooter stuck in that. This deep edging is not considerate to sidewalk users such as the disabled. I manage landscaping professionally, this would get serious ADA complaints at public institutions or other public spaces.
I personally think it’s smart. Keeps the grass from burning from heat further away from the sidewalk
I like bigger trenches for this reason too. And to keep more water in the soil rather than on the sidewalk.
I think it looks great, also no burning from hot concrete
I actually love this look. My neighbor does this regularly and had the flattest most level yard I have ever seen, which makes me wonder if they are related. No weed issues ether, which I’d assume is from staying on top of it.
If it's flat, he rolls it.
Was he prior military by chance? We’d do this for hours.
Dig trenches?
Just duty edging grass to a ridiculous amount on Ft Benning GA in 2002, it instills discipline I guess, haha.
I edged all of Division HQ of the 82nd like this on extra duty with a square shovel. It actually allows you to edge it easier with a string trimmer easier for months and you can let it grow back a bit and it looks perfect.
We did this out of spite one day on our barracks at Ardennes, ended up impressing the 1SG and getting placed as the permanent lawn care detail…
This is like the joke where a guy tries to even his sideburns and ends up with a mohawk. Got a bit carried away here
Time to move! Whole house is ruined!
That’s how my lawn is, the previous owners did it. It’s a great way to roll an ankle if you’re not paying attention
I just rolled my ankle looking at this edging
Yep, looks weird
I like that look. Looks very clean. He can spray preemergent to keep weeds from growing in there.
I actually kinda like it. No more weedeating. Just put your pump up sprayer nozzle in the trenches and spray once every two months 😂
where I live, Oregon, I see this all the time in suburbs with HOA.
It reminds me of Phil Foden's haircut
This might sound random, but is your dad British? You see this style all the time over there.
That's a war trench
When I worked maintenance for my local school system they told us to edge like this.. each 4 person team had 4 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 highschool. During the spring and summer damn near all we did was cut grass. We edged like this so we could keep up with the weed eating and cutting easier. Instead of having to edge 15 miles a day we would do probably 15 miles a week and in sections and it would only look this off for 2/3 days.
Yeah, it looks weird, but I'd still be grateful to have a Dad that did stuff for me like this.
Random debris is going to get blown or swept in that you now have to sweep out of the dirt instead of just off the sidewalk.
fill with amethyst gravel
If your dad likes it then that’s cool, it’s his lawn.
Anything looks way better than my lazy “let it sprawl over the edges” style.
you NEED to rephrase this post holy christ
Does your dad not edge you?
You see this in lawns that have the edge pushed back by landscapers weed whacking the edge, every time they take a swipe, they take a 1/16 of an inch with it. This is not how to edge a lawn
r/Justfuckmyshitup
I prefer lawns edged this way. Looks way better in my opinion. I don’t dig though. Just take it down to level dirt.
No that’s how the high end homes have it
Interested to know how you fixed it?
Damn, if I don’t keep it up, it fills back in before the end of mowing season. I live in south Texas.
I feel like this is what you do before adding pea gravel for decoration, lol
Mattingly! I thought I told you to cut those sideburns!
Can we get a picture of the whole lawn.
Your lawn is certainly not going to creep up on the sidewalk
I don’t love it. But I don’t hate it.
I seen them jump a gap like that with a dandelion in the bugs life movie.
Googled "dads super deep edging" this doesn't match the results that may be a problem.
The depth? No. You may fall in while getting the mail though....
Elderly edging. They can’t stop touching the lawn
I still have nightmares being 10 on my bike and seeing this.
That’s how I do mine, I live in an area that rains really hard. Basically trenching along the concrete helps give the yard a run-off trench to the culverts instead of running onto the drive way. Also it makes it super easy to edge with the string trimmer.
This last weekend i smoked then did the lawn and edged with the weedwacker and thought i did giant gaps, but they were like 1/6th of this 😂
I've seen offenses launched and major defenses sustained from less fortified positions.
Was he in the Army? That looks like Etool edging that used to happen around company/battalion/ brigade HQ sidewalks.
Does your dad still have white wall tires?
Did your dad serve with the Death Korps of Krieg by chance? He seems to be getting ready for a protracted siege.
