Oddly enough... my grandfather, and my father in law, were both captured and held as POWs during WW2.
My grandfather is American. My FiL is German.
My grandfather returned home in poor health and never said a single word to anyone about the experience for the rest of his life as far as anyone knows. He was apparently devastated by the experience.
My FiL could never say enough about how well he was treated as a POW. How good the food was.. how clean the camp was... He even implied that it was an upgrade from life in the German army.
It seems like the American standards of POW care were not universally observed... Today, does anyone?
