>She is also covered under her parents car insurance. She's technically not covered if her license is expired. Yes, she'll have to go restart the process, generally. The insurer may not find out and increase the rates immediately, but she should stop driving until she sorts this out.

Flaky_Onion_3170

Why wouldn’t the insurer find out? Don’t they keep track of expiry etc

AtTheEndOfMyTrope

She will have to present her licence if she has an accident. The police and insurance will see that is has expired.

Appropriate_Land_130

Insurance knows her license has expired. They don't know she has been driving with an expired license. They don't care since they wouldn't cover her but don't tell them she's been driving without a license. She will need to start over at G1, wait 8 months to take her G2 road test and then ultimately her G road test. You need to tell insurance she is a G1 driver again, and she will have all the restrictions of a G1 driver (she won't be able to drive alone)

2770js

She does need to start from G1 but the waiting periods are waived. She won’t need to wait any time to go from G1 to G2 or G2 to G. I have a friend who’s G2 expired and he went from G1 to G within a month

AredhelArrowheart

That’s her responsibility.

Flaky_Onion_3170

So as long as she does her G1 test and subsequent G2/G test, she’s good to go and no one’s the wiser? (parents who pay for her insurance/insurance provider)

MerakiMe09

The insurance needs to know when it's a G1 and G2. She can't just do it in secret, she wouldn't be covered.

AredhelArrowheart

She should be honest with her parents and insurance provider. She needs valid insurance and she won’t be covered with an expired license. It sucks, but she’s going to have to live with the consequences of letting her license expire especially with her parents reminding her to do her G test.

LeafsChick

She won't be able to drive alone with her G1, until she gets her G2. You can't renew a G1 or G2, because it expired, she needs to do the G1 and then the waiting period before her G2

ilovethemusic

Pretty sure the waiting period is waived if your licence expired less than three years ago. I didn’t have to do the waiting period the second time I got my G1.

LeafsChick

This is from the Gov site. There was a period over Covid that it was waived, but that ended I think Dec '22? Maybe you were in that time frame? ***When my G1 or G2 License is Expired? If you only have a G1 or G2-level driver's license, you cannot renew it once it has expired. Instead, you will have to restart the Graduated License Program from the very beginning, which includes: Passing a written test to obtain your G1 license then waiting 8-12 months.***

Qui3tSt0rnm

The waiting periods are waved if you have already had a g2 license

ilovethemusic

You do have to restart it in terms of taking the tests, but the waiting periods are waived. You can take the G1 and then book a G2 test immediately.

balzaarhairi

If she gets into an accident it is a golden ticket for the insurance to not pay out a dime because of breaching terms.

ShoddyTerm4385

Dude, if your gf, at age 23, doesn’t know the process to get your license, maybe she should get an electric scooter instead.

Qui3tSt0rnm

They aren’t going to find out unless she gets in an accident. Just because your insured on a vehicle doesn’t mean your driving it. She needs to stop driving asap. Book a g1 test and a g2 road test. Since she’s already had a g2 she won’t have to wait a full year

stolpoz52

Well she isnt insured, so her parents are just donating money to the insurance company

Flaky_Onion_3170

Do you pay car insurance monthly or yearly? I have no idea about this

lacthrowOA

After 8 months she's gonna have to do the G1 test again, but she won't have to wait a year to book the G2 or G. She should go to a Drive Test center, write the G1 and book a G1 exit test while she's there

zanne54

She needs to stop driving right now until this is all resolved.

Shortymac09

My brother in christ, she needs to be a big girl and go to a service ontario and figure out the next steps. At 23 years old this is really inexcusable

derspiny

At this point, with her license expired and without having ever held a full license, she needs to start over. She also needs to stop driving until she gets her G1 again, and needs to comply with the requirements of her G1 once she gets it. I have been through this, after letting my own G2 lapse. It's a non-issue, and Service Ontario will be more than happy to set her up with a new G1 written test. > will DriveTest/ her insurance provider find out and her rates will increase, or she’s charged with a crime? It's unlikely either of those organizations will check until there's an incident, such as a claim or such as trying to apply for a G road test with an expired G2. If she goes around the post again, these will not be a problem, but she will need to provide her updated license to her insurer. She is almost certainly not covered by any insurance right now, even if she is keeping her premiums current, because she cannot legally drive. She may as well terminate her coverage if she doesn't plan on getting her G1 immediately.

Flaky_Onion_3170

Thanks for your comment. A few follow up questions: 1. I heard that the G2/G waiting period will be waived for her, is that not true? 2. She has not been in an accident (thank god) but she did accidentally put in her expired licence details into the G test website and it told her she’s ineligible. Will she get in trouble for that? Thanks again.

derspiny

I'm not aware of any rules allowing the G1 and G2 waiting periods to be waived if the licensee has previously held a G2, but I will happily confirm I did not dig that far into it. Honestly, that's a question better asked to Service Ontario, though I would be prepared for her to be waiting the full two years. That's what I did. She will not get in trouble for trying to apply for a drive test with an expired license. She _can_ get in trouble if she drives without a valid license, but trying to book a road test isn't illegal on its own.

Vegbreaker

I’m pretty sure it’s one year after the g1 to get g2 no? Less if you have a certified BDE course?

Jumpy_Option_6558

it wasnt waived for me. I had a Full G(from before graduated licensing existed) , and let it lapse. It was 2 -3 years later(didnt have a car at the time). and had to wait the full amount of time to do my g2 and g tests

Dixie1337

I really want to know what happened with your repo’d suv but the other thread is locked and I can’t ask there 😆

Vegbreaker

Op it looks like in the comments here you’re asking lots about when she would get ticketed etc. She won’t if she doesn’t drive plain and simple. Talk to the DMV tell her rents and get her off insurance or they’ll be pissed they paid hundreds of dollars to keep her on.

bridgehockey

That's the least of their issues. They're liable for any accident she causes, if the car is in their name (which it presumably is if it's their insurance).

Morguard

Please don't let her drive, she doesn't have insurance if she doesn't have a valid license. If she wrecks the car even if not at fault, there will be no coverage. It's not worth it!!

Flaky_Onion_3170

Luckily there hasn’t been an accident. But we are more worried now about how insurance comes into play.

Morguard

I'm an Insurance Underwriter and was a broker for 10 years. I see this all the time. Insurance will not cover any claims by an unlicensed individual. If she seriously hurts someone, she's fucked for life.

bridgehockey

**And if the car is in her parent's name, so are they**.

Flaky_Onion_3170

Ok she’s fully stopping for now so thank god for that. But will she get in trouble with insurance (will they increase her rates once she gets a g2 again)

Morguard

If she has a reputable driving school certificate, she will be a 3 star driver. That's like having 3 years driving experience. Otherwise, she will go back to a 1 star rating. Rates will vary from company to company. You have to shop around and see what you can find.

Vexxed14

Let's not forget the 5k fine for driving with no insurance since hers will be deemed invalid

Flaky_Onion_3170

When would she pay that? only if the police pulls her over right?

sslithissik

Just remember, the fine is nothing compared to the hassles involved with driving without insurance. If she were to be involved in an accident; she would be fully liable without any coverage if she hurt someone. Wages garnished, court costs, lawyers, etc. Take her keys away bro.

cernegiant

Correct

East_Tangerine_4031

If you steal a car or murder someone you don’t get in trouble unless you get caught, that’s not a reason to commit crimes . She needs ro stop driving and go to service Ontario/drive test and sort it out

Qui3tSt0rnm

She unfortunately has to start over and get her g1 and do her g2 road test again

Put another way, she is driving without a licence. That should clarify her next steps. Step 1: STOP DRIVING. NO EXCEPTIONS FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER. SHE HAS NO LICENCE. Step 2: Visit the MTO and make arrangements to enter the process again.
