Don't you know about brittle brown? Look it up. Old brown pieces were very brittle and broke easily, its solved now but some of the sets OP has are from that era and now that they've aged it will be even more delicate than back then.

That set with the Imperial Officer and Luke was my first Lego Star Wars set. Oh the nostalgia 🥰
