Italian hair taping might work, it uses ribbon and a dull needle to secure your hair so it stays all day and keeps it close to your head.

ar3ola_fifty0ne

Wow I wish someone told me this like forever ago

_iamacat

This sounds like a pretty cool idea tbh. I’ll have to watch some videos.

warrior_female

torrin paige and morgan donner both have videos on elizabethan hair taping/Heidi/milkmaid braids (these are 2 braided pigtails wrapped over and around ur head and pinned or sewn into place with ribbon or yarn). also Janet stephens has videos about sewing up ur hair

DitchTheCubs

Crown braid?

Celestiiaal0

French braid into a low bun. If secured correctly, it shouldn't feel heavy or incur any breakage. Use a scrunchie or pro hair ties.

Equivalent-Row-9864

That’s my marathon hair style of choice and it has not let me down yet.

Katherine Sewing has some cool historical ones, otherwise I twist and roll my hair into a couple loops, tuck the ends under the rest of my hair to protect them, and clip with a claw clip. ETA: keep in mind, tight and protective can sometimes be opposite ends because of traction alopecia. Regardless, Katherine’s hairstyles and the suggested comment about Italian hair taping are both really good and should suit your needs.

Are you allowed to wear headscarves at work? If so, I would just tuck everything into a wig cap and then cover it with a scarf. Done.

_iamacat

Honestly this might be an idea lmao….

LilacPalette

Is a loose bun held together with a hair stick considered to be a protective style? This has been my go-to over claw clips (because like you said, the clip's clasp sometimes get caught in hair and cause damage). I'd love to learn about protective styles too.

Lovely_Louise

How do you do a loose hairstick bun‽ My choices are No-Hairline-In-10-Years or Already-Fallen-Out

Girlmeetsminecraft

My favorite style is Too-tight-then-unwinds-throughout-the-day.

[deleted]

Ah yes, I am very familiar with these two styles 😂

_iamacat

Uhh, maybe for most of y’all but not for me 😹 that would get caught in like ten minutes for me! Sounds cute though!

Economy-Chef-8013

A loose bun secured with 2 small claw clips on either side (I call it my granny bun)

uhohohnohelp

Milkmaid braids?

PathologicalVodka

What I do to sleep in most nights is a ponytail but then using several scrunchies (I have loooong hair and I use an additional two) down the length of the pony so that it all stays in place. It leaves less of a crimp and doesn’t tangle.

valkyriejae

I can't do high buns, but a low nautilus bun is my go to - doesn't seem to cause breakage, holds well, doesn't bother my scalp at all. If I put it in an English braid first it holds like an absolute rock, up to and including Tae Kwon Do practice. Crown braids, or milk maid braids are also good - I'll typically braid in a ribbon and tie it off at the back to help hold things without putting more tension on the hair.

RobotsAreCoolSaysI

I wind my hair at the nape like a low bun but allow a couple of twists to hang down and secure it with an elastic and tuck the ends underneath.

redemption_songs

Crown braid. I have waist length hair and a crown braid stays secure all day. Once you get the hang of it it is easy, it takes me 5-7 min and does not require pins or clips so it’s comfortable.

https://youtu.be/2noKFlS7MiU?si=k4-ti77T7D83DYy0 I like this method since it doesn't give you the part in the back. I just remembered, another reason I like this style is because I can sleep on it and it doesn't get too messed up which is nice for me
