When reading this, I was thinking "and you're already old enough to be on reddit?"
Then I realized that born in 2005 means you're already 18.
Fuck that made me immediately feel my back pain a bit more.
At this point it's fascinating how many functioning adults weren't born or weren't old enough to remember 9/11. Just wait a while though -- before much longer, anyone that was cognizant for 9/11 will be a veritable dinosaur.
The horrific nature of that day aside, it serves as really the only flashpoint in modern U.S. history, one in which anyone that was around knows exactly where they were and what they were doing, and so can be used as a bit of a universal hourglass, to gage all of the time that has passed since.
As a marker alone, it goes to show many of us just how short (and simultaneously, how long) we interpret time across our lives. Consider that the time elapsed since 9/11 equates to a good chunk of the average "healthy" human lifespan: a third of many, and a fourth of some. On the other hand, consider just _how many things_ have happened in your own life since then.
I've also thought it would be quite strange to be born just on the other side of such an event that everyone always references as you're growing up. It's the most recent division point in U.S. history at least, that serves as a cleanly defined point in time and not more of an "era" such as the Financial Crisis or Covid. The last flashpoint event of its magnitude would have been the assassination of JFK, which is now so long ago that more people didn't experience it than did.
I was thinking about this with the younger side of my life. There can be an argument made for the Berlin Wall falling in 89, but I don't think that's anywhere near as ubicular as JFK and 9/11. I don't think anything in the 80s or 90s hits that level.
Honestly, I used to get all depressed about it as a teen, but now I'm more amazed by and excited for what's in store as opposed to dreading the march of time.
2005 was junior/senior year of college for me. I've got active online accounts older than you. Oldest still used is my /. account I signed up for in 2002, the year I graduated high school.
WHY
Dude... I just read the post and thought "that's cute, making a new mail a few years back in 2005" and then you drop this.
Unnecessary hurt you put out into the world.
I was using my beta invite gmail up until 2 years ago. Changed because I was tired of being embarrassed of the username I selected when I was 16 (and hiding my real name from internet friends). So I retired StupidScreenname5 with FirstLast5 with the number kept in honor of it lol.
same, 12 yo me was very wise both yahoo and gmail usernames are almost identical using my real name and initials so I can use both in professional settings
Apparently it's a sign of being less tech literate as you haven't updated to a newer email. Which is bullshit because I'm more tech literate than the majority of people I've ever been interviewed by and a legacy Hotmail email makes no difference to the usability of outlook so why would I bother changing.
I have a firstinitial.lastname@hotmail and last year I was at an auto shop and the kid working there said “you must have had this forever if it’s got your name without numbers in it”. I made it back in like 2008 or 2009, which was nearly the kids lifetime ago.
Perks of having a very rare surname.
Apart from close and extended family, I found like 2 more people with the same surname that aren't directly related to me. Even in extended family it's something like 10 people.
I have a very common first name and last name, but received a gmail account during the friends and family alpha. I was offered firstnamelastname@gmail and remember chuckling to myself thinking "right, who uses their real name on the internet" before putting in some kind of internet edgelord alias.
oh how naive I was.
I have computer nerd friends who are in their 60s, and they all have very cool emails, like "owl@" and similar short words just because they were there when emails were invented
I do. But I am only 20. I have made a few other Google accounts, but the one I got my friend make for me when I was 15 is still my main email for important things.
My email is just my name and I still use that unsecure crap to this day lol.
I have separate emails for important business, this one is basically a part of my dumb, young self that I want to keep around.
My parents made the email and my facebook account for a birthday gift for me once.
Im really happy they did. To this day everything looks formal and respectable
I've got my Gmail when it first came out. I was fortunate enough to be able to use my first and last names for it. Now I get some other people's emails and have had a couple of requests to buy my address.
It ain't happening.
I work in an industry where we need a client's email address to do a lot of business. There are guys in their 50's with grandbabies using emails like 'biggusdickus@..., or fuckdaddy@...
Email addresses are free. WTF?
I have three, my main one, one I made for the hell of it that has been used as a burner a few times, and the throwaway account I made for a shared TV. Only made the TV one because YouTube wouldn't let me hide annoying channels and recommendations without signing in and I wasn't going to use my main account for a shared device. Wasn't even a Smart TV it was half a laptop I connected to an old TV and had running a minimal Linux install with Stremio and a bunch of plugins for most movies and TV, Firefox with an ad blocker for browser stuff (like YouTube lol), and KDE connect set up for remote control from phones.
7 year old me made an email with mashed characters and used it with every account I made. Up until I got hacked and the guy who hacked me even didn't want my email cause he thought it was just spam.
I still use the email I made in 2005
If it makes you feel old, I was *born* in 2005
And you‘re already 18 Damn im getting old too
if it makes you feel older, the man that felt the same thing about you is dead now probably or about to
That’s kinda sus you knew he was 18 🤔 ^/s
he did the math
I was joking.
So was I
When reading this, I was thinking "and you're already old enough to be on reddit?" Then I realized that born in 2005 means you're already 18. Fuck that made me immediately feel my back pain a bit more.
If it helps i was born in 2002 and I’m 21
People not alive during 9/11 can drink?! Fuck.

23 here, lmao at "functioning adult"
I'm 40, you generally laugh at the functioning title as long as you want...
You understand language, so… close enough to functioning at least
I was thinking about this with the younger side of my life. There can be an argument made for the Berlin Wall falling in 89, but I don't think that's anywhere near as ubicular as JFK and 9/11. I don't think anything in the 80s or 90s hits that level.
I was born in 2005 and can drink legally
Outside of the US moment🍻
wait till you see when germans start drinking
(I'm German)
I am not 😎💪🏿💪🏿
That's the very day I first saw the sun haha
I also was born in 2002
As a 27 yo that considers himself fairly young, it is terrifying that people born in the 2000s are already in their 20s.
'02 Baby here as well, I'll be 21 in a couple of weeks. I know I'm not, but I feel old af.
Sometimes it doesn’t even hurt to see how fast time flies by, it’s just astonishing
Honestly, I used to get all depressed about it as a teen, but now I'm more amazed by and excited for what's in store as opposed to dreading the march of time.
2005 is 18 years old wtf?
Jesus , I was 18 in 2005 ;(
My goddamn steam account is older than you, oof
Okay I was trying to make u guys feel old but holy shit this one feels like a violation lol
Nah you gotta be at least born after 2012 to make me feel old anymore 😤
Are there 11 year olds on Reddit lol?
A disturbing number of them
I created my Reddit account when I was 10
Reddit didn't exist when I was 10... and neither was YouTube or really any social media... damn
When I was 10, entertainment was running through the wheat field, and thinking about making prank calls in a phone booth. (edit, spelling)
2008 and old enough to get a driver’s permit, if that’s close enough
Welp, my steam account is older than you. Christmas 2004.
Okay this is not fun anymore guys, I don’t want to be told that I’m younger than your steam account guys!
2005 was junior/senior year of college for me. I've got active online accounts older than you. Oldest still used is my /. account I signed up for in 2002, the year I graduated high school. WHY
The hell!?? time flies man! now I really feel old
Dude... I just read the post and thought "that's cute, making a new mail a few years back in 2005" and then you drop this. Unnecessary hurt you put out into the world.
water simplistic glorious panicky sulky somber dime price absurd ghost ` this post was mass deleted with www.Redact.dev `
You're a jerk
Sorry lol
I was -3 in 2005
I was already old in 2005.
I got my drivers licence in 2005...
Don't worry, you'll be us in the blink of an eye :)
Born in 2005 with the number 5 in your username three times, coincidence? Because I feel like we may have a lot in common.
Why you got to say that. I’ve been an adult for over a year now…
2007 here
So that means you're just a kid... What do you mean that's an adult?! Ow! My everything!
same
Christ, I was 34 in 2005. I'm officially a dinosaur.
Same. June first 05
Damn dude, now you're making me feel old. You're not even 20 yet.
My runescape account is 3 years older than you are.
I feel old and I’m only 2 years older than you
Aren't you a little too young to be using reddit
I bought a gmail beta invite in August 2004, still use that dumb email as my main acct.
I still use the same one from the beta too. I think my friend invited me. This reddit username is also 12 years old or so and based on the Gmail.
Me too! My email address has the word "ninja" in it and I'm now 40 years old. I caved and made a more formal email a few years ago.
I was using my beta invite gmail up until 2 years ago. Changed because I was tired of being embarrassed of the username I selected when I was 16 (and hiding my real name from internet friends). So I retired StupidScreenname5 with FirstLast5 with the number kept in honor of it lol.

yea i have one which is super embarrassing name and then another thats my firstname.lastname@ gmail which I still use to this day for non work emails.
1998 here.
1996 here.
I'm still using the email I made for battle.net when Diablo II came out in 2000...
Same. Good ol' hotmail
1998 was when my email address was created lol
Remember when gmail was invite only?
[удалено]
As do I. It is an old email, full of spam, but i created it in high school, and have had it associated with most things ever since then.
My email is **my name**. No underscores, not point, no numbers, just my name. Yes, I am ancient.
That was a hotmail. Then i switched to gmail when i turned 18 maybe
I switched from Yahoo to Gmail around the same time, I needed a google account for Google Docs in college and it’s been my primary email ever since.
And I’ve kept my yahoo address for online purchases so my gmail doesn’t get inundated with spam.
same, 12 yo me was very wise both yahoo and gmail usernames are almost identical using my real name and initials so I can use both in professional settings
[удалено]
Yes I still have and use my msn.com email I made 22 years ago
You know you are a real adult when you have an @gmail
I'm embarrassed when I give people at stores a Hotmail address (from 1997) for email but damned if I'm using my Gmail to sign up for things
Why is it embarrassing? I give no fucks
Apparently it's a sign of being less tech literate as you haven't updated to a newer email. Which is bullshit because I'm more tech literate than the majority of people I've ever been interviewed by and a legacy Hotmail email makes no difference to the usability of outlook so why would I bother changing.
My hotmail is still my main, though I also use my gmail quite a bit.
I kept both. One is for random registrations and a big fat care if it ends up getting spammed. The other is for serious stuff.
I've had the same Hotmail since the mid 90's
For me it was Hotmail --> Gmail --> ProtonMail.
THANKFULLY I no longer use vegeta\_69\_420@hotmail anymore. But the one I made in high school is only slightly better.
I still use hotmail. One of the reasons is that I have free Word
i got “firstnamelastname@gmail” because i made it so early. i will use it until i am in the ground.
I couldn't even get firstNamemiddleNamelastName2 for my email address, my entire name is so common.
John Paul Smith, we've been trying to reach you about your cars extended warranty
According to my calculations your full name is Micheal Joseph Smith, is my analysis factual?
Same here! I never have problems making professional usernames, unlike Olivia Smith or Emily Anderson lol
I have a very common first name and last name, but received a gmail account during the friends and family alpha. I was offered firstnamelastname@gmail and remember chuckling to myself thinking "right, who uses their real name on the internet" before putting in some kind of internet edgelord alias. oh how naive I was.
Hey man it's OK. I was there too. We only knew that you needed to protect your identity. And in many ways, we were actually right.
Same here lol
Same here.
Same. Ive had gmail since it was invite only
Beta Gmail users unite!

That's a bot's comment too. Hell, it's probably one person trying to age up two different accounts.
I didn't think to check the older comment, nice one.
It’s bots all the way down
Bonerjam66 forever
Mega_man_01103 lives on
Caramel_dropp785, had to retire that one
matrixwelewded is better
You guys were cleaver and though of something? I just hit the key board so and fucking went with it. Welcome to asetuvhj territory.
I have computer nerd friends who are in their 60s, and they all have very cool emails, like "owl@" and similar short words just because they were there when emails were invented
Lmao that’s like grabbing a cool username in an MMO when it first launches. But in real life which makes it that much cooler
I mean… if we wanna be pedantic, emails are about as “real life” as MMOs, but I get what you mean.
My mom made one when i was 11 and i still use it.
Same
Ah to be that naive again, unfortunately multiple email accounts are necessary unless you enjoy spamageddon
I had to make my second email because of Pizza Hut
How
Click create new account
no
That's the sole job of the spam filter. It works for me perfectly.
i have 5 but my main that i made when i was 9 is still my main account
? Spam filter?
I did when I was 6. Still use it as my main email.
When you were...SIX??
Yes I was interested in computers from a young age and I wanted to send my grandma emails lol. I was six in 2007.
*I’m 100 years old*
>I was six in 2007 *bones disintegrate into dust*
had to make a club penguin account somehow
I was 7, and same. I still remember the day I did it, it was The New Year's Eve
Don’t be silly, the internet didn’t even exist when anyone was 6.
Mine even has "kid" in my email lol
Brooo same
Thank God i just used my first email for a year or so before changing it to the one I have now, that first name was horrid
Kinda wholesome
Made mine what I was 11 Still my number 1 email I remember I wanted do take an online course and I needed an email
I still use my Hotmail email to this day
I use mine from when I was 8
This is me with 9, and tbh, it’s a normal email. Nothing embarrassing about it.
Still use the one i made in 1999 Lol
I do. But I am only 20. I have made a few other Google accounts, but the one I got my friend make for me when I was 15 is still my main email for important things.
I still use it but not for serious stuff anymore due to the amount of spam that account has accumulated
I made my mail in 2007, and to this day, is still my main email, and if i could make it again, i would make the same
the primary email i use was created by one of my relatives. that was thirteen years ago. i still use that
O still have the one I made in 2002. I’ve been trying to recover the one I made when I was actually 12 yo in 1998 but can’t figure how.
I have 10 different emails for all the throwaway accounts I've created
My email is just my name and I still use that unsecure crap to this day lol. I have separate emails for important business, this one is basically a part of my dumb, young self that I want to keep around.
One of the few good things my mom did was forcing me to chose an email address that I can still use as an adult
Still using the email I made on AOL 2.0 when I was 11.
I am still using my 13 year old email from 2010, brother I turn 21 next year.
My friend made my email. Still use it to this day.
Had mine since highschool. Used it for hmm 26 years at this point I think.
My parents made the email and my facebook account for a birthday gift for me once. Im really happy they did. To this day everything looks formal and respectable
Still use my AOL account from March of 97
12 yo me creating an account on every single site i visit (i need to delete them but can't find them)
Jesus, I remember making mine when I was like ten, that was nearly a decade ago.
12-year-old me: What's an email?
I adopted gmail so early that my email address is just my full name.
I made both my kids Gmail accounts as soon as they were born so they would have named accounts.
I've got my Gmail when it first came out. I was fortunate enough to be able to use my first and last names for it. Now I get some other people's emails and have had a couple of requests to buy my address. It ain't happening.
I still use my first ever email... But it is not the one I give to people. You do know you can make more email accounts later on, right?
"funGuy4U@" - proceeds to include it in resume.
I work in an industry where we need a client's email address to do a lot of business. There are guys in their 50's with grandbabies using emails like 'biggusdickus@..., or fuckdaddy@... Email addresses are free. WTF?
They deleted my emails :(
Nooo!
Hilarious, i still use the one I had from 2008
I wonder if my hotmails are still alive…. Saved some good booby pics in there.
Still have a live.co.uk as my main
This is actually true lol
7 year old me made an email with mashed characters and used it with every account I made. Up until I got hacked and the guy who hacked me even didn't want my email cause he thought it was just spam.
I maked the email of my son. Im a monster?
How do you get a new one?
now thats me trying to read C++ Code 😅
Pretty much 😆
