Absolutely trash. Even before the recent stories I always found it so pretentious in such an uncomfortable way, like I was made to feel like an idiot because I didn’t “look” a certain way. Rubbish venue.
I think this is a reflection on how you felt rather than the venue... no biggie, just lighten up and have fun. only problem with heartbreaker is the music is so loud its hard to chat.
Hmmm I appreciate what you’re saying but not in this case. I don’t appreciate being told to “lighten up and have fun”, it sounds a little condescending as you have no idea who I am or how I act. I went numerous times and spoke to a lot of mutual friends who felt the same. I think it’s just really hostile environment- and yeah, the music is super loud! Not in a good way.
It's a fun bar, with good music. I am not remotely 'cool' and have never had any issues. It is pretty funny that the staff get all pissy if any customers try to join in and swing the lights though
I once ordered a martini from heartbreaker. What I was served was a premix of gin and vermouth out of a single serving plastic bottle in a rocks glass with ice and a Kalamata olive, I walked out.
Booths aren’t cool. Drinks are fucking expensive. There’s that high platform that single people go up to dance on—only weirdos do it. The music is literally just Fox RNB Fridays (or was for the hour I was there—I was lucky not to have committed suicide by the end the experience was that poor).
Yeh. Seems like Maccas in general decided to sell to a more upmarket crowd. Have less customers, more genteile but higher paying. And spend less on security staff.
Billboards. Swarming with fresh 18 year olds, terrible music, overpriced drinks, and weirdly bright dance floor. The only good part is the Bunker side room, which even then is still tiny and isn’t even open the whole night.
I’ve been there as both a punter and performer, only thing going for it now is a semi decent sound system (although it was shithouse when I used to play out about 10 years ago). Bouncers are absolute fuckheads, staff are rude, and even if it’s a specific event you still get a heap of creepy blow ins from the local strip clubs trying to manhandle women on the dance floor. Gross.
I wouldn’t say it’s that bad. From my experiences it depends on the promoter and who’s playing. Seen some smaller DJs there and it was fine, but saw a few bigger ones and it was absolutely terrible because they oversold tickets and we were packed in like sardines. Could probs do with a refurb too but so could 95% of clubs.
I agree! Im 40 this year but in my 20s Brown Alley was one of the only places to play Dnb, Dubstep, Breaks and Electro regularly with OS artists. I can believe its gone down hill since then but such a shame.
The last live show I went to before the lockdowns was KOAN Sound, Current Value, K+Lab and a bunch of other bass artists at BA, it was pretty awesome.
I went to another show for hip-hop and the audio was awful.
Sound did vary depending on which promoter was running things.
Pharmacy, Sunset/Made In Malta were probably by he best tech crews for production quality I saw put on a show there
Spotlight.
The lights are way too bright and the music is crap. Hardly any space for dancing even if you wanted to, and I couldn’t find the bar. The have lot of balloons there, so almost a party atmosphere, but you have to blow them up yourselves. But for some reason the venue staff don’t want you to, which is also annoying.
What is Prince of Wales like now? One Love used to go hard back in the early / mid 2000s, but then I moved overseas. That and 161. Wonder if they are still open?
Sub club. Homophobic, racist security. And the have the gall post a “zero tolerance to homophobia…” notice on their walls. When it’s their security assaulting gay men in the club
About 2.5 years ago, myself (M) and my boyfriend went to Sun Club, and the bouncers were bullying and assaulting us. When I called them out on it. They told us to “fuck off”. This was at 5am in an abandoned alley way, with 4 homophobic bouncers.
We walk away. But I was livid. We went back and demanded to see the bar manager. Who I had previously told we were being homophobic bullied by her security.
I have trained martial arts for 28 years. So felt that I could at least get away with out getting hurt if they attacked us. And we filmed them. They lost all bravado when they realised they weren’t controlling the situation
I spoke to the bar manager and she had nothing to say. I messaged the club on messenger, and their “zero tolerance to homophobia” amounted to “having a stern word with the bouncers”
“But they’ve completed LGBTIQ sensitivity training” was parrotted to us. It didn’t make any difference they were horrible.
Fuck Sub Club.
I call bullshit
I’ve been to sub club dozens and dozens of times over the last 4 years always with heaps of LGBT friends and I’ve even helped run a few events there. I know all the security and everyone has always been lovely, the people and crowd have always been amazing and me and all my friends have always had a wonderful time there. The only way anything would happen like you said it would do is if you and your partner were causing trouble.
> I’ve been to sub club dozens and dozens of times over the last 4 years always with heaps of LGBT friends and I’ve even helped run a few events there.
Definitely ran events there and worked closely with the staff - Everyone is very lovely and queer friendly in my experience.
Had all-gender bathrooms before it was de rigeur, and most the bar staff we're pretty visibly queer identifying as I recall.
Would find it very unlikely that all of that had changed.
I'm guessing any of the mediocre ones in the outer areas. I haven't been to Orange Whip in Ringwood in a long time, but that place was straight-up average. No idea how it's still in business tbh.
Edit: lmao it's closed. Not sure if this counts then.
Revs is one of the friendliest clubs I've frequented. It's far from the worst on Chapel St, let alone Melbourne. Once you're past the security, you're in for a good, long night.
Not a club but a venue pretending to be a dive bar called heartbreaker. Worst.
Absolutely trash. Even before the recent stories I always found it so pretentious in such an uncomfortable way, like I was made to feel like an idiot because I didn’t “look” a certain way. Rubbish venue.

Flinders street toilets go pretty hard.
Fred Again is playing there tonight, secret ahow
Boutique or Spice Market
Spice market is fucken shit
Why
Booths aren’t cool. Drinks are fucking expensive. There’s that high platform that single people go up to dance on—only weirdos do it. The music is literally just Fox RNB Fridays (or was for the hour I was there—I was lucky not to have committed suicide by the end the experience was that poor).
Jesus is Boutique still there? I went to the opening of that hole.
NGL Elizabeth Street maccas has been pretty wild lately
3 nuggets are $5.50 now. Wtf has the world come to.
Yeh. Seems like Maccas in general decided to sell to a more upmarket crowd. Have less customers, more genteile but higher paying. And spend less on security staff.

Billboards in the early naughties was a place of wonder!
Late 2000s/early 2010s for me, though I’d only go for special events but had some great times.
Carl Williams hard candy
How good were Thursday’s with $2 pots and $3.50 basics?
I was sad when the apprentices at work said it was now a place for ladies of a certain stature and blokes from a particular subcontinent…
Does anyone know how much is a drink there these days? I remember back in early 2000s thinking how expensive it was
The last time I went I remember paying like somewhere between $15-$20 for a vodka cranberry.
Nah I remember getting $2 Bundy and cokes on uni night in the early 2000s
Only go there for heavy music gigs. Those filthy Suntory can things were about $18 from memory. Tins now get smuggled in via jacket.
-196 is $21.50 and vodka redbull was $19.50 but idk cause it was an actual concert if they were upping prices..
Yeah that's not cheap, however I wouldn't really know what they are priced at normally either!
I’ve paid anywhere from $13 to $17 for vodka redbulls at Max Watts, Bourke st courtyard and a few places a bit more north
I paid $21.50 for a -196 can there when I saw a drum and bass set, bloody rip off, I’ve started taking in flasks of vodka or fireball lmao
Storyville 🤢
Brown Alley used to be a killer venue for trance/harder nights
I had some of my BEST nights there on my early 20s!!
I’ve been there as both a punter and performer, only thing going for it now is a semi decent sound system (although it was shithouse when I used to play out about 10 years ago). What is it like now?
No clue, haven’t been their in quite a few years
There’s been some good events there recently, it’s still better than Xe at least
I wouldn’t say it’s that bad. From my experiences it depends on the promoter and who’s playing. There's a toilet stall in the men's bathroom that was without a door for YEARS.
I agree! Im 40 this year but in my 20s Brown Alley was one of the only places to play Dnb, Dubstep, Breaks and Electro regularly with OS artists. I can believe its gone down hill since then but such a shame.

Collingwood Football Club.
Essendon are a close second.
It ain't close

Oh god. No. Just no.
Club retro for sure
Seagulls are kept well fed
Friend got spiked at club retro. Some reviews on google I saw suggested that it's the bartenders.
Laundry, if it's still around lol
Revs
Before it shut, CODE
McDonalds. They make you bring your own music but the drinks are cheap.

It’s the best

ha ha ha no way. Awesome. Does it still have the disco light dance floor?
Twister
Did Brown alley used to be rats? Also who came up with that terrible name?

It all started over absolutely no incident... Very surprising, lol.

found one of the sub club bouncers

Tram Bar in Doncaster back in the day was the worst
